00:00Who the f**k is Charles Guitton?
00:21You mentioned something, you mentioned logic before, the logic of characters, and yet there always seems to be also, when you approach things, an underlying emotion that always moves through it.
00:42Could you talk about, obviously, the logical path of Garfield, him getting up and speaking to everybody?
00:48He didn't think that he would become the nominee, but it became a logical and emotional sort of consequence.
00:57Could you talk about logic and emotion for you looking at the character, but also you as an actor selecting this kind of story to tell?
01:05Because you look at probably so many different things that has to engage you to make you want to spend the time, like the time you put into this.
01:14Yeah, sure. Well, yeah, I feel like there's something that happens when Garfield gives that speech at the convention is that he's really, he's really looking around the room of people that he's in and stating what is happening in that present moment.
01:35And that's also one of the key tenets of acting, you know, whether you come to it through logic or emotion, you're supposed to be embodying a present moment, articulating something that exists and then disappears as quickly as it appears.
02:00And it's very hard to be present to kind of clean the litter out of your mind and just really take in what's happening around you in its totality.
02:18But if you're capable of doing that or if you practice it or as a discipline, I feel like it can lead you to an awareness that is a mixture of both mind and spirit and emotion.
02:35You know, emotions are, they're sometimes helpful and sometimes not.
02:46And I feel like sometimes they're difficult to manage.
02:52But I guess one of the things about acting for as long as I have is that I've had to practice, you know, finding them and then letting them go.
03:09And I feel like I'm getting more adept at it as the years go by, hopefully.
03:17I rise to move that the man be named unanimously as the nominee of this convention.

04:26And my last question.
04:27I'll let you go.
04:28Thank you, Michael.
04:28Where was that?
04:29moment with this one when did you feel that you found i'm obviously you're shooting out of order
04:35when did you feel that you found garfield in that moment was there a definitely definitely you know
04:42we started with the convention and that was a real um gauntlet you know and uh very um intimidating
04:53um to stand up in front of all those people you know i had all my co-stars flanking me and
05:01a lot of extras uh out there um to speak to and
05:08yeah when when there's that much i guess pressure on uh you really
05:16you either flake out and run out of the room and hide or you just sink into it and um
05:23i was able to to do the latter i don't know i guess that's why they call me
05:30you know that's why they put the check in the mail um i i i i don't know where
05:38that ability comes from necessarily um but like i said i've been doing this a long time so
05:47but i heard you know i remember hearing um a story paul of paul newman when he was doing road
05:54to perdition and he had to give a speech in front of a lot of people and this is way into his career
06:01obviously road to perdition and i think i saw it on like a late night talk show or something him
06:07talking about how nervous he was to do that speech in front of all those people and i remember just
06:13thinking wow paul newman gets still gets nervous um that's incredible he's already proven himself
06:20you know decades ago and he still keeps going but uh
06:27yeah i don't know you feel the power in that moment michael that moment i think you're thinking
06:32about with around the piano and he has all those people yeah it's the stillness of newman in that
06:38moment you know yeah well i think that's what you realize is that um you don't have to necessarily
06:46put on a big show uh there is no big show you know that's that's an illusion you just have to try and
06:55tell the truth you know as as best you can based on your experience of the world and life and
07:02just i try to leave the bells and whistles at home i guess they they come out tangentially somehow
07:14because people keep asking me to do this but in the moment when i'm doing it i just say what's
07:21what's the truth what's the truth years from now we will be judged by what we do in this moment
07:28world pollution is no solution it's the future
