00:00New details have emerged in the investigation into the deaths of legendary filmmaker Rob
00:04Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer Reiner, and authorities have now made an arrest.
00:09Their son Nick Reiner has been taken into custody and charged with murder in connection
00:14with his parents' fatal stabbing deaths.
00:16The 32-year-old is currently being held at Parker Center Jail in downtown Los Angeles,
00:21where his bail has been set at $4 million.
00:24The arrest comes one day after Rob and Michelle Reiner were found dead inside their Brentwood
00:28California home on December 14th.
00:31Investigators say the couple suffered fatal stab wounds to the throat, following what
00:35has been described as a heated argument involving a family member.
00:38They were pronounced dead at the scene.
00:40Rob Reiner was 78 years old, Michelle Reiner was 68.
00:45Authorities confirmed that the couple's daughter Romy Reiner was the one who discovered their
00:48bodies and contacted police.
00:50Early in the investigation, sources said Romy told responding officers that a family member
00:55should be considered dangerous.
00:57At the time, Nick Reiner was named a person of interest.
01:00That designation has now escalated to formal murder charges.
01:03The arrest cast a devastating shadow over what had appeared to be a close-knit family.
01:08Just three months before their deaths, Rob and Michelle Reiner made their final public
01:12appearance with their children.
01:13At the Los Angeles premiere of Spinal Tap 2, the end continues.
01:17They posed alongside sons Jake and Nick and daughter Romy, smiling for photos and presenting
01:23a united front.
01:24Rob's eldest daughter, Tracy Reiner, whom he adopted during his marriage to Penny Marshall,
01:29was not present at the event.
01:30Following the killings, resurfaced interviews with Rob Reiner have taken on new significance.
01:36In one of his final interviews conducted in September, Reiner reflected on his career and legacy,
01:41telling Piers Morgan,
01:42Well, I mean, you know, listen, people have their favorites.
01:45They, you know, the cliché, we love all our children, even the bad ones, you know.
01:52At the time, the comment was understood as a metaphor about his films.
01:56In the wake of his death, it has been widely described as chilling.
02:00Nick Reiner's arrest has also renewed attention on his long-documented struggle with drug addiction.
02:05Nick first entered rehab at age 15 and has spoken openly about cycling through treatment
02:09programs more than a dozen times.
02:12In past interviews, he revealed that he spent years homeless after refusing to return to rehab
02:17facilities chosen for him.
02:18He described sleeping on the streets across several states and admitted that he
02:22could have died during that period of his life.
02:25Those experiences later became the basis for the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie,
02:30which Nick co-wrote and which Rob Reiner directed.
02:33Rob previously acknowledged the emotional toll of his son's addiction,
02:37admitting that he and Michelle were often desperate to help and sometimes failed to listen to Nick
02:41when he said treatment wasn't working for him.
02:44Romy Reiner, the youngest of the couple's children,
02:46has frequently spoken about her close relationship with her father.
02:49In a Father's Day post from 2021, she described Rob Reiner as
02:53the man I could talk to forever and also the man I could sit in silence with and be perfectly content.
02:59Just weeks before her parents' death, Romy posted publicly about gratitude for family and health,
03:04a message that has since taken on heartbreaking significance.
03:08The couple's eldest son together, Jake Reiner, has kept a low profile since the tragedy.
03:12Jake has worked in entertainment and hosts a baseball podcast, sharing a lifelong love of the sport with his father.
03:19A passion Rob once said was passed down from his own father, comedy icon Carl Reiner.
03:24Rob Reiner's adopted daughter Tracy Reiner expressed shock following the deaths.
03:28I came from the greatest family ever, she told NBC News.
03:32I don't know what to say. I'm in shock.
03:34Nick Reiner remains in custody as the case moves forward,
03:37and investigators have not yet released further details about the circumstances leading up to the killings.
03:42Rob and Michelle Reiner are survived by their children, Jake, Romy, and Tracy,
03:46as they now face an unimaginable loss, made even more devastating by the allegations at the center of this case.
03:53As the legal process unfolds, authorities say they are continuing to gather evidence
03:57and urge the public to allow the investigation to proceed through the courts.
