00:00Hey guys, it's Jason for Hollywood Life with your news and entertainment.
00:03Let's jump into it today with Tom Hanks,
00:05because despite winning an Oscar for his role in the movie Philadelphia 30 years ago,
00:09it doesn't seem like he would have won today.
00:11Hanks admitted that he or any other straight character
00:14could not portray the openly gay character battling AIDS he played in the movie now.
00:19In an interview with the New York Times Magazine, Tom said,
00:22The whole point of Philadelphia was don't be afraid.
00:24One of the reasons people weren't afraid of that movie is that I was playing a gay man.
00:28We are beyond that now, and I don't think that people would accept the
00:32inauthenticity of a straight guy playing a gay guy.
