U.S. President Donald Trump has repeated his criticism of Hollywood director Rob Reiner following backlash over comments made after Reiner and his wife were found dead at their Los Angeles home.

Trump previously linked Reiner’s death to what he called “Trump derangement syndrome” in a Truth Social post. When questioned by reporters, the president stood by his remarks, saying Reiner was “very bad for our country.”

00:00President Donald Trump has drawn sharp criticism after using the death of Hollywood director Rob
00:13Reiner and his wife to launch a political attack, less than a day after reports confirmed their
00:19killing. In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump attributed Rob Reiner's death to what he
00:27described as Trump derangement syndrome, suggesting that the director's criticism of him may have led to
00:33the violence. The president wrote that Reiner's death was, quote, reportedly due to the anger he
00:41caused others through his massive, unyielding and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling
00:46disease known as Trump derangement syndrome. The comments immediately sparked outrage,
00:53including from several Republicans and MAGA-aligned conservatives, who said the remarks were
00:58inappropriate given the circumstances of the deaths. Later on Monday, when asked by reporters
01:05whether he stood by his comments, Trump was unapologetic.
01:09Mr. President, a number of Republicans have denounced your statement on Truth Social after
01:14the murder of Rob Reiner. Do you stand by that post?
01:17Well, I wasn't a fan of his at all. He was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned. He
01:23said he likely knew it was false. In fact, it's the exact opposite, that I was a friend of Russia,
01:30controlled by Russia. You know, it was the Russia hoax. He was one of the people behind it. I think he
01:35hurt himself in career-wise. He became like a deranged person. Trump derangement syndrome. So I was not a fan
01:42of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape, or form. I thought he was very bad for our country, yeah.
01:48Police have said there is no indication that Rob Reiner's political views played any role in his
01:53killing, or that of his wife, Michelle Singer Reiner. Authorities confirmed that the couple was
02:01found dead on Sunday at their home in Los Angeles. Their 32-year-old son has been booked on suspicion
02:08of murder, according to police. County jail records show that he is being held in Los Angeles County
02:14on $4 million bail. Investigators have not publicly linked the killings to politics or ideology.
02:24The President's comments prompted a rare public backlash from within his own political camp,
02:29particularly as Republicans had recently urged restraint and civility following the assassination
02:35of conservative figure Charlie Kirk. Prominent conservatives had previously called
02:41for public shaming, firings, and even prosecution for those who spoke ill of Kirk after his death.
02:48Jenna Ellis, Trump's former lawyer and now a conservative radio host,
02:52criticised the President's remarks in a post on social media.
02:57A man and his wife were murdered last night. This is not the appropriate response.
03:02The right uniformly condemned political and celebratory responses to Charlie Kirk's death.
03:08This is a horrible example from Trump and should be condemned by everyone with any decency.
03:15Ellis also noted that the remarks were surprising, given that Trump himself has survived two assassination
03:20attempts.
03:23Over the years, Trump has repeatedly shown little sympathy for the deaths of people he viewed as
03:28political rivals. After Senator John McCain's death, the President criticised the Republican
03:35lawmaker. He also once suggested that the late Democratic congressman John Dingell was
03:41looking up from hell.
03:45The comments about the Reiners came as many Americans were still processing the shock of their violent deaths.
03:50It's so disappointing. It's comments like this that take away from the countless great things
04:03real Donald Trump does for America.
04:06Republican congressman Thomas Massey of Kentucky also spoke out,
04:10Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse
04:15about a man who was just brutally murdered. I challenge anyone to defend it.
04:24Other Republican lawmakers echoed similar concerns.
04:28Representative Mike Lawler of New York called the President's statement wrong and urged compassion.
04:33Regardless of one's political views, no one should be subjected to violence, let alone at the hands
04:40of their own son. It's a horrible tragedy that should engender sympathy and compassion from
04:45everyone in our country, period.
04:49Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia also weighed in, saying the moment should not be
04:55politicised. This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.
04:59Police records show that the Reiner's son, Nick Reiner, has previously spoken publicly about struggles
05:07with drug abuse and periods of homelessness beginning in his teenage years.
05:13There has been no official statement from authorities linking those struggles to the killings.
05:19Democrats also responded sharply to the President's remarks. Senator Chuck Schumer said,
05:24Trump knows no shame.
05:25As the investigation into the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife continues, criticism of the President's
05:33response remains intense, coming not only from political opponents, but from within his own party.
