00:00In 2018, Snapped Killer Couples told the story of Rebecca Keller and Carrie Murphy,
00:07a young couple consumed by obsession.
00:11The obsession with being in love with each other
00:14drove them to do one of the darkest things that I can ever imagine.
00:20There was a total of 74 stab wounds inflicted.
00:24It was a vicious, brutal crime.
00:27Currently serving a 60-year sentence in the Texas Department of Corrections,
00:32Rebecca Keller opens up about her relationship with Carrie Murphy
00:36and the night that changed her life forever.
00:40I may have made a mistake, but I'm where I need to be.
00:45But this would never have happened if she had never mentioned it.
00:51I was hoping she would have second thoughts about it, but she didn't.
00:54All I could just do is hit my knees and cry.
00:57I let her control me and manipulate me.
01:01She can't fully accept that she played an equal part in this.
01:05That jail call was as good as a confession.
01:08I just wish that I was strong enough to walk away.
01:11I wish I could take that back.
01:14She was trying to say that it was my idea,
01:16but as long as the truth is out, that's all that matters.
01:19My name is Rebecca Keller,
01:41and I decided to do this to get my story out,
01:44to be able to help other women.
01:48In a split second, your life can change,
01:51and you can't take anything back.
01:54And that's a lot of the regret that I have
01:56from that night, from that mistake.
02:00I can't change it.
02:02I can't make it better.
02:03I can't fix it.
02:05All I can do is keep moving forward
02:07and know that in the back of my mind,
02:10in the bottom of my heart,
02:11I am sincerely sorry.
02:17I think they were living in a fantasy world.
02:20They really thought they were going to commit this crime
02:22and get away with it and live happily ever after.
02:26July 16th, 2012.
02:36At 1.07 a.m., 911 dispatch receives a frantic call
02:41from 16-year-old Carrie Murphy.
02:44She told the 911 operator
02:46that someone had kicked in the back door
02:50and that she then heard her mother screaming
02:54and that she ran out of the house.
02:57She had fled the scene to the neighbor's house.
03:00So the dispatch and first responders
03:04treated it as an active break-in at that time.
03:10When I arrived on scene,
03:12I made contact with a female
03:14who was identified as Carrie Murphy.
03:18She told us that it was someone in the home
03:20attacking her mom.
03:24Upon getting to the back side of the house,
03:27I noticed there were two windows
03:28of the house that were broken
03:31and the door was open.
03:33I made entry into the home
03:35and cleared all of the rooms
03:37and at that time came to the bedroom
03:40where Carrie's mother was laying.
03:43I just saw there was a lot of blood
03:46and the victim was laying crossways of the bed.
03:50I couldn't tell at that time
03:51what the injuries were.
03:54I checked to see if maybe she was still alive.
03:58I did not feel a pulse.
04:04When paramedics arrive on scene,
04:06they confirm their victim,
04:0847-year-old Mary Ann Murphy,
04:11has succumbed to her injuries.
04:13There was a total of 74 stab wounds
04:16inflicted to her whole body.
04:19Blood all over.
04:20It was a vicious, brutal crime.
04:27Investigators arrive
04:28and begin processing the crime scene.
04:31Everything that I saw suggested
04:33that she was asleep when she was attacked.
04:36I could right away rule a robbery out
04:39because there was nothing that appeared to be missing.
04:43Also, an intruder is not going to stay there long enough
04:46to inflict more than 70 stab wounds.
04:49So that in itself told me
04:50that she was the target of this assault motive
04:54was to go in there, kill her, and leave.
04:57There had to be somebody that was mad at her
05:00and wanted her out of their life.
05:03This was someone that knew the victim.
05:05Mary Ann Allen was born and raised in Houston, Texas.
05:15Me and Mary Ann were raised on the north side of Houston.
05:19We both attended MacArthur Senior High School.
05:22I graduated in 1981,
05:24and Mary Ann graduated in 1983.
05:28When she graduated high school,
05:30she went to work for the Department of Public Safety,
05:32and that was her whole life.
05:34She loved her job,
05:36I guess because people would call her,
05:39and they always needed help,
05:41and she was there to help them.
05:43She was just a good person.
05:49In the mid-1980s,
05:52Mary Ann's brother introduced her
05:54to his friend, Don Murphy.
05:56They started going out
05:57and eventually ended up getting married.
06:00They decided that they were going to start having babies,
06:03and that's when she found out she was pregnant with Scott.
06:06Six years later,
06:07Mary Ann and Don welcomed a baby girl named Carrie.
06:12Mary Ann was a very good mother.
06:13She was a very loving mother.
06:14She loved her kids dearly
06:16and would do anything for them.
06:18It was, in my eyes,
06:20you know, the typical American dream childhood.
06:23They embarrassed me, to be honest with you,
06:24because they were the husband and wife
06:26that would hold hands and, you know, hug each other.
06:29We always said that it was the perfect four.
06:31It was the perfect family, you know?
06:33Scott was good with his sister.
06:36Carrie knew that she could talk to me about anything.
06:38She and I had a very open relationship.
06:42She was very driven with extracurriculars.
06:44She wanted to play sports.
06:45She wanted to be in the choir.
06:47We were in choir together.
06:48She was shy when you first met her.
06:50But then once she opened up,
06:52she was pretty funny,
06:54liked to play around,
06:55liked to joke around,
06:57have a good time,
07:00that kind of thing.
07:02Rebecca Keller was, at the time, in choir,
07:04and Carrie just kind of fell head over heels for her.
07:09The friend group accepted Rebecca and Carrie's relationship.
07:17In 2012, with her two children doing well,
07:21Mary Ann was ready for the next chapter in her life.
07:25She was knocking on her 30-year retirement.
07:28She was very, very proud of her kids.
07:30We couldn't do any wrong in her eyes.
07:32She wanted to just make sure that we were happy.
07:35I wish I could rewind time, and this never happened.
07:38I worked the graveyard shift.
07:40July 16, 2012, 1.04 a.m.,
07:43I get a phone call from my sister's phone.
07:45She says, Scott, someone broke into the house.
07:47My mom's dead.
07:48I dropped everything I had in my hands,
07:50and I started to panic.
07:52I called my father to let him know that he'd come home,
07:54so he started heading this way.
07:56At the crime scene,
08:02investigators take Mary Ann's daughter, Carrie,
08:05aside for questioning.
08:09Carrie told me that she had been up
08:11in the dining room, scrapbooking,
08:14got tired, and went to bed,
08:17and wasn't in her bedroom
08:19very long before she heard a crash.
08:22And she said that someone had kicked in the back door
08:26and that she then heard her mother screaming.
08:31She ran out and called 911 from across the street.
08:35She stayed with some witnesses
08:37who let her use their phone.
08:40She stayed with them until the police arrived,
08:42which was only a couple of minutes later.
08:44The detectives had me place Carrie
08:48in the backseat of my patrol vehicle.
08:51She didn't ask if her mom was okay,
08:53and that, to me, kind of sent up red flags.
09:00She didn't seem to have the emotion
09:03of someone whose mom was intact.
09:07She wasn't hysterical.
09:08She wasn't crying.
09:11She didn't appear to really be upset.
09:13But she was more calm than anything.
09:18I didn't know for sure what had taken place,
09:22but I had a feeling that, in some way,
09:25Carrie was connected to what had happened at the scene.
09:32When you're young, you just...
09:34you don't really think about things.
09:37You just act on them.
09:39But later on, you regret them.
09:41It's the last night of her mother's life.
09:45I remember Carrie telling me that she was scared.
09:48We both were really scared to carry on with this.
09:54Coming up, the investigation takes a turn
09:57with a shocking admission.
09:59To have someone confess to a murder
10:02that they didn't commit is manipulation at its finest.
10:05And horrifying new details of the murder come to light.
10:10She was screaming.
10:12It took me to stop.
10:13And I couldn't.
10:14In July of 2012,
10:30the Harris County Sheriff's Office
10:32is investigating the stabbing death of Marianne Murphy
10:35after her 16-year-old daughter Carrie called 911
10:40to report a break-in at their home.
10:43While deputies escort Carrie to the station for questioning,
10:48authorities continue processing the crime scene
10:50and discover several concerning clues.
10:55In the bedroom,
10:57we noticed that the blood was starting to dry
11:00and starting to coagulate,
11:02which would indicate that she had been deceased
11:05for a longer period than the time that was stated.
11:08I noticed that there wasn't any damage to the back door.
11:15And there were two windows just to the left side
11:18of the back door that were broken.
11:22When you break a window from the inside,
11:26the glass falls to the outside.
11:29And when you break a window from the outside,
11:33the glass falls inside.
11:35And I noticed that one window had been broken
11:39from the inside
11:40and the second window had been broken from the outside.
11:45So from my observation and looking at the scene,
11:49it appeared that someone had staged a break-in.
11:54From the call and what was stated from Carrie
11:58about a break-in,
12:00it would appear that Carrie wasn't telling the truth.
12:05Carrie was a girl who had been
12:07in the scene.
12:08Realizing he'd been to the Murphy home before,
12:11Officer Fred Hooper offers investigators
12:13the name of Carrie Murphy's girlfriend,
12:16Rebecca Keller.
12:18Months before, I was dispatched to the home
12:21and I spoke with Mary Ann
12:24and Carrie was on scene as well as Rebecca.
12:27And Mary Ann told me that
12:31she didn't want Carrie involved with Rebecca.
12:36She was very upset that
12:38she's asked Rebecca
12:40several times not to come
12:42to her home
12:44and she insists on coming anyway.
12:47So at that point in time,
12:48I arrested Rebecca
12:49and transported her
12:51and charged her with trespassing.
12:53And being that I had arrested Rebecca
12:57at that scene
12:58prior to the incident,
13:01I gave her name to the detectives
13:04when they arrived on scene
13:05as possibly a person of interest.
13:11An investigator travels
13:13to Rebecca Keller's house
13:14to speak with her
13:15later that morning.
13:17The investigator,
13:18it came to my house
13:19and we had sat in his car
13:21and I did a statement.
13:24Growing up,
13:24I was the youngest out of four kids.
13:27So, you know,
13:27mom and dad, always busy.
13:30I was into a lot of
13:31extracurricular activities growing up.
13:34You know, I was in choir.
13:35I had, you know,
13:36a lot of friends.
13:39Rebecca says
13:40she befriended Carrie Murphy
13:42about two years earlier.
13:45We were in high school.
13:47I was a senior.
13:48She was a freshman.
13:50We met in choir.
13:51Carrie,
13:52her heart,
13:53her spirit
13:54drew me to
13:56become
13:56friends with her.
13:59We may have been
14:00different ages,
14:01but it was a lot more easier
14:03to lean on somebody
14:04like her.
14:06We were actually
14:07out at the mall
14:09with my best friend
14:10and her best friend.
14:11You know,
14:11we all
14:12had like a little
14:13friend date
14:15for my birthday.
14:16so I think
14:17that's when
14:18the feelings
14:18for one another
14:19transpired
14:20to pursuing
14:22a relationship.
14:24She was the first one
14:25that I was
14:25in a relationship
14:26with a woman.
14:28Me and Carrie,
14:29we decided
14:30to come out
14:31and put it out there.
14:33One day
14:33in choir,
14:36being young,
14:36you were like,
14:37you think that everything
14:38is important.
14:39and everything
14:40revolves around
14:41this person.
14:42We were very much in love.
14:47Marianne Murphy,
14:49however,
14:49was not so keen
14:51on the budding romance
14:52between her daughter
14:53and Rebecca.
14:55She didn't agree
14:56with the age difference
14:57between Carrie
14:57and Rebecca.
14:58She voiced that opinion
14:59very often
15:00and very bluntly.
15:02It wasn't about
15:04the fact that
15:04her daughter
15:05was seeing
15:06another girl.
15:07It was the fact
15:08that I think
15:10Marianne knew
15:11that Rebecca
15:12was not
15:13the best influence.
15:15Carrie would sneak
15:16me in her room
15:17at night
15:17while her mom
15:18was asleep
15:18and her dad
15:19would be at work.
15:20And I guess
15:21we had fell asleep.
15:23Her mom had heard
15:24a noise or something
15:24and caught me
15:26in the room.
15:27The second time
15:28that she caught me
15:28was when
15:29both me and Carrie
15:30were in the shower
15:31naked.
15:33That's whenever
15:33her mom called the cops.
15:35They arrested me,
15:36took me to jail.
15:41Were there challenges
15:42in your relationship
15:43with Carrie?
15:44There was.
15:45There was a lot
15:46of challenges.
15:47She lied a lot.
15:48Just small,
15:49simple things like
15:51who she got
15:51a text message from,
15:53who she was
15:53on the phone with,
15:54who she was
15:55meeting up with.
15:56After she had lied
15:57to me so many times,
15:59I started pushing
16:00her away.
16:02After learning
16:03more about the couple,
16:05investigators ask
16:06Rebecca when she
16:07last spoke to Carrie.
16:09She's acting
16:11like she's forthcoming,
16:12that, yeah,
16:13you know,
16:13we liked each other,
16:15we tried to have
16:15a relationship,
16:16but it didn't work out.
16:18And that's been
16:19about a month
16:19and a half ago.
16:20I haven't talked
16:21to her since then.
16:22When investigators
16:24question Rebecca
16:25about Mary Ann
16:26Murphy's murder,
16:27the 20-year-old
16:29is adamant
16:29she had nothing
16:30to do with it.
16:31I said I was over
16:33at a friend's house
16:34when all this
16:36was occurring.
16:38So he took down
16:40my statement,
16:41he left.
16:45While authorities
16:47work to verify
16:48Rebecca's alibi,
16:50investigators turn
16:51to Carrie Murphy
16:52and the inconsistencies
16:54in her initial statement.
16:56The timeline
16:57doesn't match.
16:59There was
16:59some dried blood
17:00on her,
17:01which signaled
17:02time passage.
17:04We know how long
17:04it took for the deputies
17:06to get there
17:06and go inside
17:08and find your mother
17:09that would have been
17:10within minutes
17:11after you said
17:12you heard
17:13your mother scream.
17:17With permission
17:18from Carrie's father,
17:20Don,
17:20investigators sit down
17:22with the 16-year-old
17:23for a formal interview.
17:25When she's pressed
17:26by detectives
17:27for details
17:29about the timing
17:31of events,
17:31the fact that
17:32there was no
17:32forced entry,
17:34she then begins
17:35to switch her story.
17:37Out of nowhere,
17:38she said,
17:39okay, well,
17:39there is somebody
17:41by the name of Zane.
17:43That was the very first
17:44time we heard
17:44the name Zane.
17:45We wanted to talk
17:46to him.
17:5516-year-old Carrie Murphy
18:03has just implicated
18:04a person named Zane
18:06in the murder
18:07of her mother,
18:08Mary Ann.
18:11Zane was a friend
18:12of Carrie from school.
18:14One of the things
18:15that Carrie told us
18:16was that Zane
18:17had a crush on her.
18:19She wasn't interested
18:20in him.
18:22He was kind
18:22of a shy guy,
18:24wore, you know,
18:25big baggy pants,
18:26chains,
18:27more of like
18:28the gothic emo type,
18:29but he was
18:30very quiet.
18:32I grew up with Zane.
18:33He was kind
18:34of a weird kid,
18:35but, I mean,
18:36he was a good person.
18:42According to Carrie,
18:43two days before
18:44the murder,
18:45she asked Zane
18:46if he could help her
18:47after she was
18:48caught sneaking out.
18:50One night,
18:51Carrie's mom
18:52caught Carrie outside.
18:55Carrie Murphy's lie
18:56at that time is,
18:58I heard a strange sound,
18:59there was a strange
19:00suspect around the house,
19:02so I was really
19:02just out of the house
19:04looking for this suspect.
19:07Mary Ann knew
19:08her daughter was lying
19:09and grounded her,
19:11but Carrie had come up
19:12with an idea
19:13to get out
19:14of being in trouble.
19:16Carrie says
19:17she wanted
19:18Zane
19:19to come and
19:21knock on the wall
19:22of her bedroom
19:23and run off
19:24so that the mom
19:25would think,
19:26hey, there is
19:26somebody suspicious
19:27outside,
19:28so maybe Carrie
19:29was telling me
19:30the truth about
19:30why she went out
19:31and she won't
19:33be punished.
19:34But Carrie
19:35tells investigators
19:36that when Zane
19:37showed up that night,
19:39he barged
19:39into the house
19:40with a knife.
19:42She's admitting
19:43to,
19:43yeah,
19:44I knew this guy
19:44was going to
19:45come over
19:46to my house,
19:47but I didn't know
19:47he was going
19:47to murder my mom.
19:49And I lied about it
19:49because I knew
19:50he was coming over.
19:56While Carrie
19:57remains in custody,
19:59investigators bring
20:00Zane to the station
20:01for questioning.
20:03He said that
20:04he didn't know
20:04what Carrie
20:05was talking about.
20:06Then he was asked
20:07if he would
20:08take a polygraph,
20:09which he agreed to.
20:10A polygraph examiner
20:13takes Zane
20:14into another room
20:15to administer
20:16the test,
20:17which elicits
20:18an unexpected
20:19revelation.
20:20Zane ended up
20:22admitting to
20:23stabbing,
20:24killing Miss Murphy.
20:26He said
20:27it was an accident.
20:28He just got scared.
20:30He said she woke up
20:31and startled me
20:32and I just panicked
20:33and I stabbed her.
20:35I'm like,
20:36wow,
20:36this is a new one
20:37on me.
20:38Sometimes you
20:40call him wrong.
20:44As investigators
20:45continue talking
20:46to Zane,
20:47his confession
20:48begins to fall apart.
20:51Zane said
20:52he had went up
20:52to the second floor
20:54and that he had
20:55stabbed Miss Murphy
20:57like three or four times,
20:58which that in itself
21:00didn't match
21:00the evidence.
21:02For one,
21:03the house that
21:03Miss Murphy lived in
21:04was a one-story residence.
21:07There was no second floor
21:08and two,
21:08she was stabbed
21:09over 70 times.
21:11On top of the errors
21:13in Zane's story,
21:14his parents are adamant
21:16that he was at home
21:17on the night
21:17of the murder.
21:19And they have proof.
21:21He was playing
21:22video games
21:23and there was actually
21:24pictures of him
21:26playing with time
21:27and date stamped
21:28on it.
21:34When asked
21:35why he had confessed,
21:37Zane offers
21:38more insight
21:38into his relationship
21:40with Carrie Murphy.
21:42It appeared
21:42that Zane
21:43would do anything
21:44for Carrie.
21:45He was infatuated
21:47with her
21:47and she used
21:48that to her advantage.
21:49So that begs
21:50the question,
21:51what exactly
21:52is she trying
21:53to cover up?
21:55To have someone
21:56confess to a murder
21:58that they didn't commit
21:59is manipulation
22:00at its finest.
22:01Zane was
22:03in this whole
22:04punk rock stage,
22:06black clothes,
22:07black nails,
22:08heavy metal.
22:09So it was easy
22:10for Carrie
22:11to point the finger
22:12to him.
22:13He says he gave
22:14a statement
22:15to Sergeant Clopton
22:17because he thought
22:18he would be released
22:19and he could go home.
22:21This is a suspect
22:22who is not
22:23of an average intelligence.
22:25So he was a little bit
22:27intimidated
22:28by the whole process.
22:30With all of that
22:31information,
22:32we decided
22:32to dismiss
22:33his charges.
22:34Then we began
22:34our investigation
22:35further into
22:36who actually
22:37committed the murder.
22:42With suspicion
22:44escalating
22:45around Carrie
22:45Murphy's involvement,
22:47investigators sit down
22:48with her brother
22:49for questioning.
22:51Carrie had a close
22:53relationship
22:53with her brother
22:54and so the best route
22:55was to have
22:56conversations
22:57with her family.
22:58This is where
22:59the investigation
23:00really started
23:02to shine a light
23:03on how dark Carrie's
23:04relationship
23:05with her mother
23:06had become
23:06after Carrie
23:07and Rebecca Keller
23:08developed a very
23:09intense bond.
23:12Mom could see
23:13the obsessions
23:13beginning
23:14and she didn't feel
23:15that it needed
23:16to continue.
23:17She drew the line
23:18and it was
23:20no more.
23:21You are not allowed
23:22to see her
23:23anymore.
23:25Her mom
23:26was just very
23:27controlling
23:28over her life,
23:30over what she could
23:31do,
23:31what she could
23:31eat,
23:32whatever,
23:33anything she was
23:34controlling.
23:36Carrie would lie
23:37to Marianne a lot.
23:39Once Marianne would
23:40go to sleep,
23:41she would go in
23:42and steal
23:43Marianne's keys
23:44and take off
23:44with her car.
23:48Marianne was
23:49going to punish
23:49her,
23:50took her phone
23:51from her.
23:52Rebecca gave
23:53Carrie a cell phone
23:55so that they could
23:56still communicate
23:57and the mom
23:57wouldn't know
23:58that she was
23:58talking to her.
24:00And he said
24:01they called it
24:02the bunny phone.
24:04I asked Scott,
24:05okay,
24:05do you know
24:05that number?
24:06And he said,
24:07yeah.
24:07So he gives me
24:08that phone number.
24:09I'm going to order
24:10the phone records.
24:11On August 6th,
24:13investigators received
24:14the phone records
24:15for Carrie's
24:16bunny phone.
24:17The information
24:18we were able
24:19to obtain
24:20was that Carrie
24:21and Rebecca
24:21had been in
24:22constant communication
24:23leading up to
24:24the murder.
24:26When Carrie
24:27got arrested,
24:28it was very scary.
24:30Knowing in the
24:30back of my mind
24:31was like,
24:31okay,
24:31I'm next,
24:32or they're going
24:32to come get me next.
24:34I felt like
24:34a little kid
24:35in a corner.
24:36I felt like
24:37I was being
24:37surrounded by
24:38everything
24:39closing in on me.
24:41Investigators
24:54have arrested
24:5516-year-old
24:56Carrie Murphy
24:57for the murder
24:58of her mother,
24:59Mary Ann.
25:00Six weeks
25:01into the case,
25:02investigators
25:03set their sights
25:04on Carrie's
25:04girlfriend,
25:05Rebecca Keller.
25:07The investigators
25:07came and got me
25:08from my house,
25:09took me downtown.
25:10put me in the
25:13interrogation room.
25:15Soon as I started
25:16telling her,
25:17okay,
25:17well,
25:18I know that
25:18y'all were talking
25:19to each other.
25:19She says,
25:20okay,
25:21okay.
25:22I went over there
25:24because Carrie
25:24called me
25:25and said she
25:26killed her mom.
25:30Rebecca said,
25:31so I went over there
25:32just to help her
25:33cover up.
25:34when I get there,
25:36Carrie's got blood
25:37all on her clothes.
25:39She tells Carrie,
25:40you know,
25:40hey,
25:41you ought to
25:41make it look like
25:43a burglary.
25:44And Carrie comes up
25:46with the idea,
25:46hey,
25:46I can blame it
25:47on Zane.
25:53Rebecca admits
25:54that she convinced
25:55Carrie to stage
25:56the scene instead
25:58before fleeing
25:59so Carrie could
26:00call 911.
26:01The plan was
26:02to make it
26:03look like a break-in.
26:05I decided
26:05to hide
26:07the bloody clothes,
26:10the knives
26:10and all that.
26:12I hid them
26:13in a dumpster
26:14that was down
26:15the street
26:15where a school was.
26:17The next day,
26:18I went over there
26:19and got the clothes,
26:21took them somewhere
26:21and burned them.
26:23Basically,
26:24I was owning up
26:25to getting rid
26:25of the evidence,
26:26not really owning up
26:27to carrying out
26:30the act
26:30of taking a life.
26:34I just told them
26:35some word of the truth
26:36and some word
26:37of a lie.
26:43While both young women
26:45remain in custody,
26:46investigators continue
26:48sifting through
26:49the evidence.
26:50The search history
26:51on Carrie's cell phone
26:53seems to corroborate
26:54at least part
26:55of Rebecca's statement.
26:58Carrie was Googling,
26:59was the quickest way
27:00to kill somebody.
27:01She used sleeping pills
27:03and just different methods.
27:05But the phone records
27:06also suggest
27:08that Rebecca Keller
27:09was more of a collaborator
27:11than an innocent bystander.
27:13Well, those Google searches
27:16were at the same time
27:19that she's talking
27:20on the phone with Rebecca.
27:23So I know that
27:24they are scheming this together.
27:26It was clear
27:27that they were both involved
27:28in the planning.
27:29They wanted to be together
27:31and Mary Ann stood in the way.
27:36I was older.
27:37I was 20 years old.
27:39Carrie was 16.
27:42They see me
27:43as the person
27:43manipulating her
27:44and really it was
27:45the other way around.
27:47She was manipulating me.
27:48She was the one
27:49that basically called
27:50all the shots
27:50on everything.
27:51While the young women
27:58await trial,
27:59Carrie's family
28:00posts her bail.
28:02Rebecca Keller, however,
28:03remains in jail.
28:05But as both
28:06their trial dates near,
28:08investigators still
28:09aren't sure
28:10who wielded the knife
28:12that took
28:12Mary Ann Murphy's life.
28:14Until a series
28:16of jailhouse phone calls
28:18exposes the gruesome truth.
28:21All of these phone calls
28:23that these two girls
28:24had were recorded.
28:26Rebecca says,
28:26I'm just glad
28:27that you didn't see
28:28what happened in there.
28:30And Carrie said,
28:30I did.
28:31I was in the hallway
28:32and I looked.
28:34Rebecca says,
28:35you weren't supposed
28:36to see that.
28:36I told you to stay
28:37in your room.
28:39That let me know then,
28:40you know,
28:40that Rebecca
28:41had done the stabbing.
28:44Rebecca,
28:45at the beginning,
28:46you know,
28:47she claimed she had
28:48nothing to do
28:49with the actual murder.
28:50But now we know
28:51Rebecca was the one
28:52that stabbed Ms. Murphy.
28:54That jail call
28:55was as good
28:56as a confession.
28:58It was very disturbing
28:59that Carrie would watch
29:01someone attacking
29:02their mother.
29:06The couple's
29:08jailhouse phone calls
29:09also reveal
29:10the reason they decided
29:11to kill Mary Ann
29:13on July 12th.
29:14Her mom had
29:15took her phone
29:16and was basically
29:18going to have it
29:19like scanned
29:21or locked open
29:22or whatever
29:23because she always
29:23kept the password
29:24on it.
29:25Mom told her,
29:27well,
29:27what's the passcode
29:29to your phone?
29:31Carrie wouldn't
29:31give her the passcode.
29:34And the mom said,
29:36well,
29:36I'm going to take this
29:37to work with me
29:38and I know guys there
29:40that's going to get
29:41this unlocked
29:41and I'm going to
29:42see what's going on.
29:43Carrie had been texting
29:46back and forth
29:47with her
29:47where they had been
29:48sending new photos
29:49as well.
29:51The text messages
29:52were not something
29:53a mother of a 16-year-old
29:54girl expected to find
29:56on a phone.
29:57They were quite intimate.
30:00Carrie was like,
30:00I can't let mama
30:01get back to work
30:02with that phone
30:02and that's when
30:03she started Googling
30:04about, you know,
30:06what's the quickest way
30:06to kill somebody
30:07and they made that plan.
30:13Investigators theorize
30:15that Carrie and Rebecca
30:16put their plan
30:17into action
30:18that same night.
30:20I believe Carrie
30:21lets Rebecca in,
30:22tells her,
30:23you know,
30:23okay, mom's sleeping.
30:25Rebecca tells her,
30:26okay, wait in,
30:27wait in your room.
30:28Then Rebecca
30:29got on that bed
30:30and she proceeded
30:32to stab Mary Ann
30:33over and over
30:35and over.
30:40The crime took place
30:42roughly around nine
30:43but the call
30:44didn't come in
30:45until about one
30:46so there were
30:47some hours
30:48that were
30:50unaccounted for
30:50which indicated
30:52that Carrie
30:53and Rebecca
30:54had took that amount
30:55of time
30:56to clean up the scene.
30:58So after you leave
30:59and go home,
31:00what were your
31:00biggest fears?
31:02My biggest fears
31:04was that I'd be
31:05pushed out of my family,
31:07be pushed away
31:08from people that I love,
31:09people that I cared for,
31:10fear of being killed,
31:14being locked up
31:17for the rest of my life.
31:21A lot of things
31:22were going through
31:22my mind that night.
31:27Coming up,
31:28Rebecca Keller opens up
31:31about the night
31:32Mary Ann Murphy
31:33was killed.
31:33I loved her so much
31:35that I wanted
31:36to prove to her
31:37that my love
31:38for her was real.
31:39And the young women's bond
31:41is tested
31:42behind bars.
31:45After we were sentenced,
31:47we were together
31:48in county.
31:50I could depend on her,
31:51but the relationship
31:52changed.
31:55I started learning
31:56that she was
31:58turning on me,
32:00that she was
32:01trying to put
32:02all blame on me.
32:0316-year-old
32:16Carrie Murphy
32:16and 20-year-old
32:18Rebecca Keller
32:19have been charged
32:20with the July 2012
32:21murder of Carrie's
32:23mother, Mary Ann.
32:25I believe the motive
32:27was for Carrie and Rebecca
32:28to be together
32:29at any cost.
32:30I believe that Rebecca
32:32and Carrie
32:33both plotted
32:34to kill Mary Ann.
32:36Carrie let Rebecca
32:36in through the back door
32:38and they murdered
32:39Carrie's mom.
32:42This would never
32:43have happened
32:44if she had
32:46never mentioned it.
32:48And I had given her
32:49multiple occasions
32:50to walk away from this.
32:52Not just from
32:53that night,
32:54but this relationship
32:55that we were having.
32:57I think there's still
32:59some resentment
33:00on Rebecca's part
33:01where she can't
33:02fully accept
33:03that she played
33:04an equal part in this.
33:06Both girls
33:07planned this out.
33:08They fed off
33:09of each other
33:10and it led
33:11to the ultimate tragedy.
33:12In December of 2012,
33:19two weeks before
33:20Carrie's 17th birthday,
33:22a judge rules
33:23that she will stand
33:24trial as an adult.
33:26But despite both
33:27Rebecca Keller
33:28and Carrie Murphy
33:29facing first-degree
33:31murder charges,
33:32neither case
33:33ever goes to trial.
33:35Rebecca entered
33:36into a guilty plea.
33:38Carrie entered a plea
33:40on her own,
33:41admitted guilt,
33:42and took what
33:43the state offered.
33:44Carrie got 30 years
33:46and Rebecca got 60 years.
33:49To me,
33:50Carrie should have
33:50got the same thing
33:51Rebecca did.
33:53Carrie's just as guilty
33:54as Rebecca is
33:55because she stood
33:55in the doorway
33:56and watched it happen
33:57and didn't stop it.
33:59Her life was lost
34:00and her mom
34:02will never get
34:0330 more years.
34:04So I think that
34:06the punishment was light.
34:08I feel the same
34:09about Rebecca.
34:10I feel like her
34:11sentence was light.
34:12I just feel like
34:13any loss of life
34:14or you taking a life
34:16in 60 years
34:19is light
34:20compared to a life
34:21that it was lost.
34:27After we were sentenced,
34:29we were together
34:30in county
34:30for a very long time.
34:32We were not sexually
34:33active with each other.
34:34We were just
34:35emotionally,
34:37mentally
34:38in a relationship.
34:39Like we weren't
34:40really
34:40how we were
34:42before.
34:44Us being
34:44in county,
34:46I could depend on her,
34:47I could lean on her
34:48just like she could
34:48for me.
34:49We really just talked
34:50about our relationship,
34:52where it was
34:54going to lead to.
34:56And so we just
34:57would talk about
34:58how much
34:59we loved each other,
35:00how much we cared
35:01about each other,
35:02how much we,
35:03you know,
35:04we meant to each other.
35:06But the relationship
35:08changed.
35:12I started learning
35:13maybe a year
35:14or so after
35:15that she was
35:18turning on me.
35:20She was
35:21trying to put
35:23all blame on me
35:24and not taking
35:25any accountability.
35:27Trying to say
35:28that it was my idea,
35:29that I'm the one
35:29that came up with it
35:30when really
35:32she was the one
35:34that came up
35:35with everything.
35:42Now,
35:43after 13 years
35:45behind bars,
35:46Rebecca Keller
35:47is ready to open up
35:48about her true role
35:50in the murder.
35:52Carrie was talking
35:53about killing her mom
35:54for a while,
35:55for a couple of months
35:57before this even happened.
35:59I thought she was
36:01just saying it
36:01out of hurt,
36:02out of anger.
36:04I really didn't think
36:05that she was going
36:06to really
36:06play it out.
36:08I guess
36:09when she finally
36:10did decide,
36:12she involved me.
36:17She was just telling me
36:18it needed to be done,
36:19that she didn't want
36:21her mom to live anymore.
36:22Telling me
36:23we could
36:23live happily
36:26without her.
36:27you can go in there
36:28and do this
36:29because you love me.
36:31And I did.
36:32I did.
36:33I did love her.
36:35And
36:36I loved her so much
36:38that I wanted
36:38to prove to her
36:39that my love
36:41for her was real.
36:42We both came up
36:45with a plan,
36:46well,
36:46more of her
36:46came up
36:47with a plan
36:48to stab her,
36:50kill her.
36:51When she let me
36:52into the house,
36:53I was in disbelief
36:54that it was really
36:54going to happen.
36:56I really thought
36:57I could just
36:57talk Carrie out of it.
36:59I was hoping
37:00she would have
37:01second thoughts
37:01about it,
37:02but
37:02she didn't.
37:03In 2012,
37:19Rebecca Keller
37:20and Carrie Murphy
37:21were convicted
37:22of the murder
37:22of Carrie's mother,
37:24Mary Ann.
37:25Now,
37:26Rebecca Keller
37:27opens up
37:28about the night
37:29Mary Ann
37:30was murdered.
37:30She gave me
37:34the knife.
37:34I walked
37:35into the room.
37:36I was really scared.
37:38I kind of, like,
37:39stood over her mom
37:40a little bit,
37:41undecisive
37:42if I wanted
37:43to chicken out
37:43or not
37:44or just
37:44grab my stuff
37:47and leave.
37:49So I walked
37:49back out.
37:52Carrie was
37:52in the kitchen
37:53and
37:54she just looked
37:56at me
37:57and she's like,
37:57what are you doing?
37:58I was like,
37:59I'm scared.
38:00I was scared
38:02to carry this on
38:03and she
38:05manipulated me
38:07again.
38:09She talked me
38:09into going
38:10to the room.
38:11I guess the best
38:11thing that I knew
38:12to do
38:13was to just
38:13close my eyes
38:15and just
38:16carry on.
38:19Mary Ann
38:19was screaming
38:20telling me
38:22to stop
38:22and I couldn't.
38:26I just couldn't
38:27because
38:28I had Carrie's
38:29voice in my head
38:30tempting me
38:31to keep going
38:31and I guess
38:33after the last
38:34one
38:34that I did
38:35I didn't even
38:36realize how many
38:37or where at
38:39it was dark.
38:41I walked out.
38:43All I could just do
38:44was hit my knees
38:45and cry.
38:47Cry to know
38:48that I took
38:49somebody's life
38:50because
38:51of Carrie's
38:53selfishness,
38:54because of Carrie's
38:56anger towards her
38:57mom.
38:58I let her
38:59control me
39:01and manipulate me.
39:03Do you still
39:04think about that
39:05night a lot?
39:05I do.
39:07I still think
39:08about it.
39:08I still replay
39:09it in my head.
39:14It's been
39:1513 years
39:16and I deal
39:19with it
39:20every day.
39:22I regret
39:22taking somebody's
39:23life
39:24because I had
39:25to live with it
39:26for the rest of my
39:26life
39:27to know that
39:28I took
39:29somebody's
39:29mother,
39:30somebody's
39:31sister,
39:34somebody's
39:35aunt
39:35away from them
39:38and I can't
39:40take that back.
39:41It's taken
39:47Rebecca a long
39:48time to be
39:49able to speak
39:50about what
39:51really happened
39:52that night
39:52and the fact
39:53that she was
39:54the one who
39:54wielded the knife
39:55that took
39:56Marianne's life
39:57and I think
39:58that goes
39:59to show
39:59the stride
40:00she has made
40:01in prison
40:01to accept
40:02responsibility
40:03and grow.
40:06I do
40:07deserve to be
40:08punished
40:08what happened.
40:10I do
40:10feel that
40:11the amount
40:13of time
40:14that I was
40:15given was
40:16a good amount
40:17of time
40:18for the act
40:20that I carried
40:20out
40:21but I was
40:22very angry
40:23because I feel
40:24that if
40:26she's the one
40:28that helped
40:29set everything
40:30up,
40:32why should she
40:33have a lesser
40:33sentence than me?
40:35We should both
40:35have the same
40:36sentence
40:36but I mean
40:38as long as
40:39the truth is out
40:40that's all
40:41that matters.
40:42We are not
40:42in touch
40:43at all.
40:44She steadily
40:45keeps trying
40:46to reach out
40:47to me.
40:47I've let Carrie
40:48know that I don't
40:48want nothing
40:49to do with her.
40:51She's already
40:52taken so much
40:53from me.
40:54Why am I going
40:55to allow you
40:55to take
40:55more from me?
40:57I talk to a lot
41:05of women
41:05in here
41:06about the
41:08struggles
41:08that I dealt
41:09with and
41:10everything
41:11to help
41:12them
41:13if I can
41:15impact them
41:16and help
41:18them change
41:18their life.
41:19It makes me
41:20feel good
41:20to know
41:21that I may
41:23have made
41:23a mistake
41:24but I'm
41:25where I need
41:26to be.
41:26I need
41:27to be here
41:27to help
41:28these women
41:28because they're
41:29broken and
41:31if I can
41:31reach out
41:32and help
41:33them that's
41:35all that
41:35matters to
41:36me.
41:44There's
41:45never a day
41:45that goes
41:45by that I
41:46don't miss
41:46her.
41:47I miss
41:47her more
41:47than anything
41:48but I
41:50think she
41:50was doing
41:50what she
41:51thought was
41:51right to
41:52make sure
41:53her child
41:54succeeded
41:54but the
41:55obsession
41:56with being
41:57in love
41:58with each
41:59other
41:59drove
42:00them to
42:02do
42:02one of the
42:04darkest
42:04things that
42:05I can ever
42:05imagine.
42:18And
42:20do
42:21to
42:22see
42:23if
42:24you
42:25and
42:26you
42:27and
42:27have
42:28been
42:28and
42:28have
42:28been
42:29to
42:30see
42:30,
42:32uh,
42:32what's
42:33doing.
42:38do
42:41do
42:44do
42:44I
42:46have
