00:00Hey guys, I'm Chris Gardner with The Hollywood Reporter, and we're in studio today with Jennifer Tilly, the fabulous Jennifer Tilly.
00:10Yes, I made you say that. Hi, I'm good. How are you?
00:13I'm good. It's so nice to see you. Thanks for coming in studio with us today.
00:16And I was preparing to see you today and going over the last story that I wrote about you, which reminded me that we've met before.
00:24I know. I couldn't believe that. I was on the red carpet at Mocha, also wearing Gucci.
00:29Also wearing Gucci and looking fabulous that day too.
00:31Just the coincidence. I think every time I meet Chris, I have to always be wearing Gucci.
00:36It's a requirement.
00:37Yes, it's a requirement. But I was really astonished because I was on the red carpet and you were asking me all about Chucky.
00:43And I was like, why is he asking all these Chucky questions? But I'm always happy to talk about Chucky.
00:47And then this fabulous article came out about myself and my association with the killer doll.
00:53And everybody was really thrilled over Universal. Don Mancini retweeted it. It was great.
00:58That's great.
00:58And, you know, people picked it up because I think you said something like I was probably going to be in every Chucky movie till the end of time.
01:05And then I think that went out on the AP, as they say.
01:08On the wires.
01:09On the wires. It went out on the wires.
01:11Everyone thought that was like a really good, like really funny thing.
01:15Jennifer's career path is mapped out for her till the end of time.
01:19Well, you did all the hard work for me. That was such a great quote, too. And it's also, you know, there have been so many Chucky movies. You've been in a bunch of them.
01:26Yes, it was touch and go for a bit because at first I was in Bride of Chucky. And this is when Don was like, you know what, Chucky's been around. I think it had been around for 10, 15 years at the time. That was 20 years ago, Bride of Chucky.
01:39So anyway, he was like, well, it's not really scary anymore because where's the surprise? It's a doll that kills people. And so he decided to take sort of a quick right turn and make it more like Scream or, you know, some of those self satirizing films.
01:53And so that's where he brought me in. It's called Bride of Chucky. I play a girl, a white trash girl who turns into a doll and becomes the amore of Chucky. And so that was like really funny and it was very successful.
02:07And a few years later, he conceived of the seed of Chucky. And he just like decided to take it a little further and was incredibly campy. I play Tiffany, the little plastic doll.
02:18And then Jennifer Tilly, international star of screen and stage, whose career is declining because now she's making Chucky movies. So it was a little art imitates life.
02:28So I was playing Tiffany in the Chucky version, in the Chucky movie. And then Tiffany, the doll, decides to go into my body.
02:35So after that, Universal, I was like, okay, that's enough. Chucky needs to be scary again.
02:41So the next movie, I get my script and, you know, when you get your script, you flip through really fast looking for your part.
02:47And like on the very last page, it's like a little dibby dab of Tiffany. I'm like, what? This is it?
02:53And John's like, well, you know, Chucky's got to be scary again. And, you know, he loves Tiffany.
02:59But, you know, when I come in and I'm sashaying in and I've got like my chest out and my five-inch high heels and, you know, the dead animals draped over my shoulder.
03:08I was like, oh, it's time to laugh. So I came in a little bit at the end.
03:11But in this movie, the fans demanded it. They're getting it. Tiffany is back.
03:16There's more Tiffany in this movie than in Curse of Chucky. And that's all I'm going to say.
03:22Yes, we have to be very careful about that because we don't want to ruin any of it for you.
03:25But you are back. You have some great lines in this film.
03:29I had so much fun.
03:30Do you have any input on...
03:32Well, we would do like Don... Okay, Don Mancini, who created all the Chucky movies, he's like a big horror film buff.
03:39And so when you see all the movies, you'll see like an homage to like Rear Window, homage to Dress to Kill, Blowout.
03:48In fact, he got Pino de Nogio, who did the music for Blowout, to do the music for Cedar Chucky.
03:53So he really believes that horror films are art and he meticulously crafts his film.
03:58So when you have a film that's meticulously crafted, there's not a lot of time for Jennifer Tilly crazy improv shenanigans.
04:06But he also loves me and he thinks I'm really funny.
04:09So I'll come in and he's like really, really a stickler, like he wants me to say the words exactly the way he wrote them.
04:16And then something happens and I'm, you know, hitting people over the head with the doll and doing like all kinds...
04:21And he laughs and laughs and laughs and laughs.
04:23Usually doesn't use it in the movie, but sometimes he uses it over the closing credits or, you know, in the deleted scenes.
04:31So I think there's... I haven't seen the movie yet.
04:34You haven't?
04:35We went to London and they had it in two theaters.
04:37And we had to do the Q&A in one theater.
04:39And then we waited half an hour and then we ran to do the Q&A in the second theater.
04:42And then we had to run back to the first theater to do the answer thing.
04:46Oh, we did the introduction, the introduction, and then we had to do the Q&A.
04:49So we basically saw the beginning of the movie and the end of the movie.
04:52So I haven't seen it.
04:53So I could tell you all about it.
04:55Let me tell you about it.
04:55Okay, tell me.
04:56Tell me about this movie that I did.
04:58But what I can tell you about it is, without any spoilers, is just that it is...
05:01You mentioned meticulous.
05:02And that's, you know, a word that I would use to describe it.
05:05It's so stylized.
05:06Yes.
05:06And it feels like every shot and every character and every line of dialogue is very meticulous.
05:13And it's there for a reason.
05:14And it felt like, you know, it felt like a throwback to some, like, sort of classic, really stylized horror movies.
05:22Like, you mentioned, like, even Hitchcock.
05:24It just felt like every shot had a purpose.
05:26Well, even when I came in, like, I brought two suitcases full of trashy Tiffany outfits.
05:30I was like, trashy outfits?
05:32I've got a closet full.
05:34And so I brought all these clothes.
05:36And then he was like, no, no, no, no.
05:38Now we have a new concept for Tiffany.
05:40He said, now she's in Jennifer Tilly's body.
05:42She's living in Beverly Hills.
05:43She wants to be a movie star.
05:46And so I had, like, all my, like, corsets and fishnet stockings and push-up bras.
05:51And I'm like, oh, boy, I have to put these back in the suitcase.
05:54And he's like, yes, we're making a beautiful, elegant suit for you.
05:58I was like, okay, well, Don, you're the genius.
06:01And the reason why Chucky has been going on for 30 years is because he keeps wanting to reinvent Chucky.
06:08So when you see Tiffany, I think the audience is going to be very surprised.
06:12He says that she's a little more elegant.
06:14And, you know, also she's older.
06:15I mean, I feel like Wendy at the end of Peter Pan where he comes to pick her up and she's, like, a woman now.
06:20And she's sort of crouching down.
06:22She doesn't want him to know how big she's gotten.
06:24I feel that way every time he calls me to do the movies because Tiffany is supposed to be pretty much the same age she was 20 years ago.
06:30Or 10 years ago when she went into Jennifer Tilley's body.
06:34But, you know, time marches on.
06:38So Tiffany is evolving a little bit.
06:41When he called me up, he goes, I wrote a scene for Tiffany.
06:43She's going to be really hot.
06:45And I was like, hot?
06:46And I spit out the bagel I was eating.
06:48I was like, what am I going to do?
06:51And I was like, well, there's all this industrial light to magic.
06:54You know, like how they stretch out Mariah Carey in the videos.
06:57I was like, they can do that, I guess.
06:59I don't know.
07:00So, but I was really excited because I'm literally, these days, I get parts for grandmas.
07:06You do not.
07:07Yes, grandmothers.
07:07And then I go out and I do my, like, grandmother thing.
07:10Like, you know, oh, hi, I'm your grandmother.
07:13I've showed up.
07:15And then they send me back.
07:17And they go, Jennifer can't be a grandmother.
07:19I mean, what are you thinking, sending us Jennifer Tilley?
07:21And I was like, okay, I am older than the character in the screenplay.
07:26But, you know, so apparently I'm this sort of weird floaty thing that I can't play my age.
07:31I can't play younger.
07:32All I can do is play Tiffany now until the end of time.
07:35So, anyway, what was I saying about, oh, so Tiffany, she's more mature now.
07:40She's more mature.
07:40So people will see, you look at the earlier Tiffany and she's, you know, she's like sort of a bit of a slut.
07:45And, you know, she's kind of romps around and causes havoc.
07:49Like, now she slinks in and causes havoc.
07:51She's more like Natasha and Boris and Natasha.
07:54She does and she has a very hot scene.
07:56There's no grandmother vibes.
07:57Did you think it was hot?
07:59I did think it was hot.
07:59I thought it was hot.
08:00I actually paused it and was like, whoa.
08:02Whoa, what's going on?
08:04It's a surprise.
08:05It's a big surprise.
08:05We're not allowed to talk about it.
08:06No.
08:07I'm telling you, I did my best.
08:08I worked as hard as I possibly could to make that scene hot.
08:12You know, it wasn't difficult because of, you know, the people I was working with.
08:17I say very vaguely.
08:18Very vaguely.
08:19But, yes, it was, I was really excited when I saw that scene and I thought, oh, Don, there's Don.
08:26He's doing an homage to some other movies that I've done.
08:28And I thought it was really kind of a special treat for the Chucky fans.
08:32It's a special treat and it does set.
08:35There are so many twists and turns in this movie, aren't there?
08:37There are and it's very bloody.
08:39It's very, very bloody.
08:40Do you, does it scare you?
08:42Do those scenes scare you?
08:43What scares you in a movie?
08:45Well, bad lighting.
08:46It's like, you know, as you get old, when you're younger, you can dart in and out of terrible lighting, you know, totally unscathed.
08:54Because, you know, you're flawless.
08:55And when you get to meet my age, you know, all of a sudden you're like, you know, I used to read about how Barbara Streisand, when someone was doing an interview at her, how she'd have all her people come over and set up all the lights.
09:05And even when she was going to be on Johnny Carson, they would come and they'd check it all out.
09:09I was like, oh, my God, what a diva.
09:11And now I'm like, oh, wow, I wish I had people like that.
09:14It's like, oh, that's really practical.
09:17It makes sense.
09:18But what scares me, I guess, is a long time ago I read Salem's Lot.
09:24And, you know, it starts out from the point of the kid, the little kids, and they're really scared to go through the forest.
09:29And I'm so used to, you know, when little kids go through the forest, they get home and they have a bowl of soup and go to bed.
09:34And, like, I guess halfway through the forest, they get horrifically slaughtered.
09:38And that's like you bonded with these kids.
09:40Like, it starts out from their point of view, and that's what Stephen King does.
09:43You know, the people you bond with, all of a sudden they're dead, and you're like, where do I go from here?
09:47So, and that's, I think, why it is very horrifying, too, because it's, you know, children are the last innocents.
09:53And, you know, usually there's sort of a convention in horror films that they do not get murdered.
09:58In fact, in Curse of Chucky, the little girl in Curse of Chucky was supposed to get killed.
10:03And I thought it was really genius.
10:04I got the script, and she has a new toy, which is the Chucky doll.
10:08And she's huddled under, I think there's a thunderstorm, and she's huddled under the blanket with the Chucky doll.
10:13She goes, it's so nice to be safe here, and then it covers with you, Chucky.
10:18And all of a sudden, all this blood starts hitting the sheets.
10:22But the Universal's like, no, no, no, no.
10:24We do not kill the kids here at Universal.
10:27So he had to change that.
10:28Well, I think that's also, too, why Chucky probably was so popular and so groundbreaking for its time,
10:33because maybe the kids weren't getting killed, but it's a doll for kids that is just so scary that everyone can sort of remember.
10:40My boyfriend said he was so scared when he saw Chucky, the Chucky movie.
10:44His sister had these dolls, and they were, like, collectibles, so they're creepier than regular dolls.
10:48And he would come home late at night, and it scared him so much, he took the dolls, and he put them in a big bag,
10:53and then he put them in the garage, and then he was going to drive them out to the lake and dump them in the lake.
10:58Drive them out to the lake.
10:59So he was obviously over 16.
11:01And his mom goes, why are these dolls here?
11:03And he's like, I'm going to drive them out to the lake and get rid of them.
11:05She's like, oh, my God, give them to me.
11:07Your sister's going to be so mad if you get rid of them.
11:09But I think a lot of people say that Chucky is what really made them scared about dolls.
11:14And there's something really eerie about something that has a human-like face, a humanoid face, but isn't really human.
11:21And human characteristics.
11:22And human characteristics.
11:24I mean, if I woke up on Halloween and Chucky was in my room, I'd freak out, too.
11:28To me, like, I think Chucky's adorable because I'm the bride of Chucky.
11:32I always fall in love with my co-stars a little bit.
11:34So, you know, people go, aren't you afraid?
11:36Like, do you have horrible dreams about Chucky?
11:38It's like, no, it's a sexy dream.
11:41I would actually love if Brad Dwarf, like, the fans are all, they do all this fan art.
11:46I think it would be very cool if Brad Dwarf and my character Tiffany had a scene as the humanoid versions of themselves.
11:53I mean, there's a million ways you can go with a Chucky movie.
11:55Don Mancini, are you listening to this?
11:56Yeah.
11:57That's what you need to do for the next one.
11:58I think that would be really, really cool.
12:00Yeah.
12:00That would be great.
12:01But if they get into that, let's say, they come out in 30 years and pass, so they're kind of like old fucks, you know?
12:07They're like, okay, now we're, oh, okay, where do we go from here, you know?
12:12Yeah, see, when you mentioned the fans, I would imagine you've had some pretty crazy fan encounters because the fans of the Chucky franchise, the cult of Chucky, are pretty intense.
12:22They are.
12:22What's the weirdest, most outrageous fan encounter you've had?
12:26Well, the fans are, they're very, very obsessive.
12:29And I didn't even realize that until I started Twitter and Instagram.
12:32Like, just, I would say my fan base is probably 90% Chucky and 10% all my other movies combined.
12:40I don't think I've had any weird encounters.
12:43They're all really nice.
12:44They're not that strange.
12:45Usually, they want a hug.
12:47For some reason, they adore Chucky.
12:49Like, they think Chucky is, like, some delightful little puppy or, like, this darling little thing that just happens to kill people.
12:55And that's astonishing to me that people relate to Chucky.
12:58They don't relate to the people that are running away and getting horrifically slaughtered.
13:02They just think Chucky is, like, a real agreeable, you know, so a character you'd like to have at your parties, it's going to make everybody laugh.
13:09And, you know, maybe one or two of the guests go missing.
13:12But, you know, it's a small price to pay for having such a fun guy at your party.
13:16Just don't leave any sharp knives or scalpels lying around.
13:20The thing with the fans, though, there's a lot of cosplay.
13:24Like, I went to Monster Palooza and there's a, no, I met a guy who's dressed up like my bath scene.
13:30It was really quite innovative.
13:31He had, like, bubbles and he had a television set attached to him.
13:36They actually had the Bride of Frankenstein in the television set and, like, lightning bolts going through the bathtub.
13:42I thought that that was really creative.
13:43The Chucky fans are very creative and they come up with astonishing costumes.
13:47What's always amazing to me is that, like, they'll have their kids out.
13:51They always dress up their kids like Chucky and Tiffany.
13:54I'm really astonished that the kiddos love the Chucky.
13:56This new one is really kind of grotesque and horrifying.
13:59So I am astonished that kids love Chucky so much.
14:03But, you know, maybe because he's about their height.
14:05Yeah.
14:05They can relate to him.
14:06Though, I'd say, though, the strangest thing they do is they have me sign their body parts and then they tattoo my signature on their body parts.
14:13Yeah.
14:13I should get some sort of royalties or something for that.
14:15Hey, but you mentioned Instagram and I was actually just scrolling through your Instagram.
14:18Because I'm a very serious investigative journalist.
14:21Oh, thank you.
14:23So I spent a lot of time digging through your Instagram feed.
14:25And I noticed, which I should have said earlier, happy belated birthday.
14:28Well, thank you very much.
14:29It really looks, according to your Instagram, you have a lot of friends and you celebrate it all over the world.
14:34It's like, yeah, birthday.
14:35It just goes on for weeks and weeks.
14:36Because everyone's like, let me take you out for your birthday.
14:38And I'm like, free food?
14:39Sure, I'm there.
14:40So, like, day after day, there's pictures of me blowing out cakes and opening presents and going, birthday lunch, birthday dinner, birthday brunch.
14:48Yeah, so it does go on for quite a while.
14:50Did you have a good time?
14:51What was your favorite celebration?
14:52I used to, when I was younger, you know, you always think, like, oh, birthdays are for kids.
14:55And I used to never even tell people about my birthday.
14:57And sometimes I'd be on the set and usually on, and that's before, you know, the Internet.
15:03But usually when people have a birthday on the set, they get a cake or whatever.
15:07And I would never have a cake.
15:08And I'd go home and I'd be sad and I'd be like, Jeff, you didn't tell anyone it's your birthday.
15:11You kind of have to say my birthday is next Saturday.
15:14You mentioned it casually.
15:14Somebody in the makeup trailer.
15:16And pretty soon everybody knows, you know, just like how they all know that you're having sex with somebody on the set.
15:22Those makeup artists.
15:23Just tell the right person and it'll spread like wildfire.
15:26But now I get older and it's like, I do like to celebrate birthdays.
15:31I hate to say, I hate, like, my fans used to all say, oh, my God, you're so beautiful.
15:35You're so hot.
15:36You're so sexy.
15:36And now they go, you're so beautiful for your age.
15:40And they always say my age.
15:42And so it's on my Instagram.
15:43There's like all the, I'm like, oh, I, oh, it sounds so, it sounds so old.
15:48But see, I didn't even say it.
15:50I know.
15:50It's like Voldemort.
15:51It's a name that cannot be said.
15:53Do we say it?
15:53I mean, because I'm sitting so close to your face and I don't know.
15:56I'm flawless.
15:57You are flawless.
15:59You look so beautiful.
16:00And, you know, we're in Hollywood where people your age don't, you know, they're.
16:05Well, I think it's genetic because I'm half Chinese.
16:07My mom had good skin.
16:09I, you know, I don't know what it is.
16:12But I also think like the less you do to yourself, it's kind of a sort of weird slippery slope.
16:18Because, you know, when I see myself sometimes in on screen and they haven't done the special beautiful lighting like you do here at thehollywoodreporter.com.
16:27Yes, it's lovely.
16:29If you're, sometimes you, yeah, but it's very hard.
16:34That's why I like doing theater now because the nearest audience member is like 30 feet away.
16:39And even further away if they're in the balcony.
16:41So theater is like great.
16:43But I do.
16:43They're not like looking through their HD glasses.
16:45Right.
16:45They're little binoculars like I do when I go to a pageant of the masters.
16:49Anytime like a naked statue comes out, I whip them.
16:52It's like, I think I see nipples.
16:54But you are approaching a milestone birthday.
16:56We don't have to say which one it is.
16:5860.
16:58I'm almost 60.
16:59All right.
16:59Okay.
17:00I'm 59.
17:01I'm almost 60.
17:02Yeah.
17:02But how do you feel?
17:03I mean, let's talk about this in terms of life lessons.
17:05Because I love, I was reading this People Magazine profile about your sister.
17:09Right.
17:10And she, in this profile, which was really well done, she mentioned that you gave her a bracelet saying
17:15that it's never too late to be what you are, or let's say this, it's never too late to be what you might have been.
17:22Right.
17:22And I'm curious as you approach this milestone, what significance does that have for you?
17:27I feel a little guilty because my sister has told that story so many times and it really sort of turned her life around
17:31because she was raising her kids in the forest in Canada.
17:37And then all of a sudden she's like, I want to start acting again.
17:40And so it's like this mystical gift that I gave her.
17:42I literally, I did not have a Christmas present for her.
17:46And I bought this bracelet for myself.
17:48And I was like, oh, it's kind of funky.
17:49Like, Meg will like it.
17:50I didn't even think about the message or anything.
17:52It was like a silver bracelet, you know.
17:54And so I gave it to her.
17:56And now she's like, oh, she gave me this perfect present.
17:58And I was like, oh, yeah, I did.
18:00I, you know, I thought that would be, when I saw it, I thought, Meg, that's for Meg.
18:03But I do feel like I've sort of been a bit on a hiatus a little bit.
18:08Like, I became very obsessed with poker.
18:10And I found, like, I used to make a lot of movies one after another because I always felt like one job leads to the next.
18:16And, you know, all jobs come with a paycheck.
18:18And sometimes you have to, like, fix the plumbing or fix the roof.
18:21Because now I think I'm sort of at a place where I don't have to worry about money.
18:25So it's made me very lazy.
18:26Like, now I understand where Bill Gates and those people are like, I'm not giving my kids money because then they're just going to, like, hang around and go to the beach like the talented Mr. Ripley and live off their trust fund and buy her for a trader.
18:38So I feel like if I didn't, wasn't so independently wealthy now, I would probably be working more.
18:45But I think, do I want to wake up at 5 in the morning and put on makeup and do some movie that's probably, might not even make even the smallest film festival?
18:54And the answer is always no.
18:56So, I mean, obviously, Scorsese showed up, called, you know, with this group, which I plan to work with him one day.
19:02I'm not sure how I'm going to make that happen.
19:04But I feel like I'm so happy right now.
19:08You know, in the last 10 years, I've had people, they're very close to me, pass away.
19:12And I feel like your priorities really do change.
19:15I feel like it's very important to be happy and be around people you love.
19:18And especially, like, you know, where you have people that might not be here forever.
19:23So this is what I'm doing.
19:24But I do feel like I have a magical life.
19:28And anytime I want to, like, hold out my hand, like a golden apple will fall into it.
19:32And so I feel like when I want to get back onto that crazy merry-go-round, I feel like I'll be able to do it.
19:38I feel like right now I'm hibernating.
19:39You know how a bear sleeps in a cave and, you know, and he's eaten lots and lots of food.
19:45So he doesn't have to go to the bathroom or eat for, like, five months.
19:49That's sort of how I am.
19:50I don't feel like it used to be, like, acting fed me.
19:54And now I feed me.
19:57I only believe that story, though, if the bear is hibernating in some sort of fabulous Gucci ensemble.
20:02Then I'll believe that.
20:04But I love that, though, because it is true.
20:06I mean, and you are maybe not giving yourself enough credit.
20:09I mean, you're wealthy, so that's credit.
20:11But you sort of have done so much in your career.
20:14I was looking over your credits.
20:16And you really have done so much.
20:17But you mentioned Scorsese.
20:20What else is left for you that you really want to do besides...
20:22Well, I really am enjoying my life.
20:24And I thought, you know what, I've done so many movies.
20:26And I have such a body of work.
20:28And right now it seems like 90% of the people know me from the Chucky movies.
20:32And, you know, yes, okay, I did do four Chucky movies.
20:36It's not like, why do they think of me as being in the Chucky movies?
20:40Because I have been in the Chucky movies.
20:42But I really would like to be known for, like, an entire body of work.
20:45So I want to do more movies and different films, like in the future,
20:50that sort of people will say, wow, she was such a versatile actress.
20:54I have to tell you, when Gene Wilder passed away,
20:58I opened up the paper and it said, oh, my God, Willy Wonka is dead.
21:02And I was like, are you kidding me?
21:04Willy Wonka, this man, did so many brilliant films.
21:07And people remember him from Willy Wonka.
21:09I know this is sacrilege, but I really thought that was a terrible movie.
21:12And it's because I used to read a lot when I was a kid.
21:14I love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
21:16And I saw that movie and I was like, oh, my God, it's so twee.
21:19And I really hated that the Chocolate River looked like brown water.
21:23It's like, that's brown water.
21:24That is not Chocolate River.
21:26But also, too, recently, another actor, John Hurd.
21:29John Hurd, a brilliant, brilliant actor.
21:32And the headlines were, the dad from Home Alone is dead.
21:35I just remember all his fantastic performances.
21:38And I cannot believe he is remembered for being the dad in Home Alone.
21:41And not that there's anything wrong with that.
21:43Home Alone is a great movie.
21:44But I would like to be remembered for something besides Chucky movies.
21:48But if I pass away and I have a little tombstone with, like, Chucky on the tombstone going,
21:56ade, due, don, bola.
21:58Like, my ex-husband passed away and we put on his tombstone a little.
22:02He loved animals and he loved, he created the Simpsons.
22:05So we put, like, a little drawing of Bart Simpson with his arm around a dog.
22:08But I'm sure Sam would have loved that.
22:10I'm not sure if I would like, you know, my tombstone to have Chucky on it going,
22:15stay dead, bitch.
22:17Because you know that's what Chucky would say.
22:19Yeah, I kind of want to get rid of that.
22:21And then, you nailed it, by the way.
22:23And then recently you were traveling and, um...
22:26Oh, my God.
22:26So everywhere I go, this is the amazing thing about Chucky.
22:29I will get off the plane in a country I didn't even know existed.
22:34And people run at me screaming, Chucky, Chucky!
22:36And they want a hug.
22:38And, um, I...
22:39The character, people are so obsessed about the character.
22:42I was recently in Guatemala.
22:44And I was going to the Tikal ruins.
22:46And the local paper did a whole article about me being there.
22:50But it said, Tiffany, Chucky's bride is here.
22:53That was the article.
22:55I don't even think my actual name was in the article.
22:57And then they, like, pulled some pictures from my Instagram
22:59and was talking about what the things that I was visiting.
23:03But I was like, oh, my God.
23:04I'm Tiffany, Chucky's bride.
23:07Not Oscar-nominated actress.
23:10You know, distinguished Oscar-nominated actress
23:13is here to check out some ancient ruins.
23:15It was like, Tiffany's here!
23:17So I love that the fans are so fanatic
23:20and that they love the character so much.
23:22But at the same time,
23:23I would...
23:25The Chucky movies are a small part of my...
23:28And I would like to be remembered
23:30for some of the other films I've done as well.
23:32I know we're wrapped,
23:33but can you just answer this?
23:34I'm so curious.
23:35What's the credit that you are?
23:36Is there a credit you're most proud of
23:38that you would attach to your name?
23:40My...
23:41Well, you know, I am proud of the Chucky movies.
23:43Don't get me wrong.
23:44But I would say some of my favorite films
23:46that I've done were Bullets Over Broadway
23:48because Woody Allen is a genius, you know.
23:51And also Bound,
23:53which I did with the Wachowskis,
23:54which I think is a classic film noir film.
23:57And then there's a bunch of other films
23:59that I've made that I'm really fond of.
24:02Let It Ride, The Getaway,
24:05Liar, Liar.
24:07Sometimes people, fans go...
24:08They'll come to me and they'll be like,
24:10Oh my God, I love you!
24:11And I go, Oh, thank you.
24:12And they go, What movies were you in?
24:14And I go, Liar, Liar.
24:15And they're like, No.
24:16I'm like, About, no, Chucky movies?
24:20They're like, No.
24:20And I'm standing there like on the road
24:23giving my entire resume to somebody
24:25going, No, no, no, no, that's not it.
24:27And then eventually they'll go,
24:29I got it!
24:30The Big Chill!
24:32And you're a connoisseur of,
24:35is this the right way to say this?
24:36Maybe I should say it differently.
24:38You have a...
24:39I'm a collector.
24:40You're a collector.
24:40Yes.
24:41And you also are a big fan of fashion and art.
24:43What's your guilty pleasure in terms of accessibility?
24:45Well, you know what?
24:45I always like, when we were very little,
24:47we were so poor.
24:48And I always say,
24:49like, for example,
24:50my sister was petrified
24:51because we lived in a small town.
24:53And my mom was shopping the Sally Ann.
24:55And we, I didn't even understand
24:56the repercussions of it.
24:57We'd be like,
24:58The Sally Ann!
24:59The Sally Ann!
24:59They refused to get out of the car.
25:01And she was terrified
25:03that we would go to school.
25:04And some girl would go,
25:06That's my dress.
25:07That's my old dress.
25:08My mom sold it
25:09so poor people could have something to wear.
25:11So we were very poor.
25:14And we only had, like,
25:15one pair of shoes.
25:16And when we came home,
25:17we had to take them off
25:18so we wouldn't wear them out.
25:19I might be exaggerating.
25:20I had two pairs of shoes.
25:22But so now I have lots and lots of shoes.
25:24And it's just, like,
25:25really nice.
25:25Like, when I was young,
25:27like,
25:27the idea,
25:28like,
25:29a designer garment,
25:30like,
25:31actually,
25:31when I came to Hollywood,
25:32like,
25:32like,
25:33a designer garment would be,
25:34like,
25:35ooh,
25:35earth shoes,
25:36you know?
25:36Like,
25:37my designer,
25:38my earth shoes.
25:40That takes me,
25:41but I already did say
25:41I'm almost 60.
25:43But now it's, like,
25:44there's so,
25:45it's, like,
25:45so nice to go
25:47to the fashion shows
25:48and be, like,
25:49I'm wearing Gucci.
25:51Oh, you know,
25:51who else wears Gucci?
25:52Beyonce.
25:53Fancy people.
25:54I'm a fancy person.
25:56And so,
25:56I really do.
25:57And, you know,
25:58when I go to the
25:59Dolce & Gabbana shows,
26:00it's, like,
26:01how they stage them,
26:02it really is art.
26:03I mean,
26:03in all civilizations,
26:05when you think of the 20s,
26:06you think of,
26:07you know,
26:07the Elizabethan time,
26:08you always think of the clothes.
26:10I mean,
26:10that sort of always defines an era.
26:12So I think fashion defines an era
26:13as much as politics
26:15or art
26:16or world events.
26:18It's what people think of
26:19when they think of a particular time.
26:21Like,
26:21there's,
26:22I think there's a play called
26:24Love, Life, and What I Wore.
26:26It's very important to women,
26:27what they wore.
26:28Like,
26:28when someone's telling a story
26:29about how they met their husband,
26:30people will interrupt
26:31and they'll be like,
26:31what were you wearing?
26:32You know,
26:33it's important.
26:34It makes you feel confident.
26:36It does.
26:36And you always do it really well.
26:38I still remember the Gucci dress
26:39you were wearing
26:39the night we met.
26:42So,
26:42you know,
26:43and now that you're saying
26:44all this stuff,
26:44I was thinking about
26:45one of the first things
26:46I asked you
26:47was about Chucky.
26:48Right.
26:48Mostly just because
26:49I knew it was coming up for you.
26:50Right.
26:50And I know that you have
26:51a diverse career.
26:52I love that.
26:53And you were asking me
26:54and I was like,
26:54oh,
26:54I don't know
26:55why he's asking me
26:55these questions.
26:56He's never going to use it
26:57in his mocha story
26:58and then you made
26:59a whole story out of it.
27:00I thought that was very cool.
27:01Very successful journalist.
27:04And I'm wearing pink shoes.
27:05Yes.
27:06Which are fabulous.
27:07So,
27:08for anyone who hasn't seen
27:10these Chucky movies,
27:11what can you say
27:12about Cult of Chucky
27:14to reel them in?
27:15All right.
27:17Cult of Chucky
27:18is insanely crazy,
27:19first of all.
27:21I'm looking at the wrong camera.
27:22Is that the camera?
27:23This camera.
27:24Oh,
27:24I am looking at the right camera.
27:25Okay.
27:26Cult of Chucky
27:27is just totally insane.
27:28It happens to take place
27:29inside an insane asylum.
27:31So,
27:31it follows like
27:32a long history
27:33of movies
27:34about people
27:35who may or may not
27:36be crazy
27:37in an insane asylum.
27:38So,
27:38that's like
27:39sort of almost
27:39the perfect venue
27:40for this movie.
27:41And Fiona Dorff
27:43plays the person
27:44that's incarcerated
27:45and actually,
27:46ironically,
27:47she is not crazy.
27:48And then the people
27:48running the asylum,
27:50they're all,
27:50you know,
27:50they've all got
27:51their own little
27:52sort of dramas
27:53going on
27:54and weird fetishes
27:55and,
27:56you know,
27:56things that they like to do.
27:58And somehow,
27:59I don't think
27:59this is giving anything away.
28:00Everyone's seen the picture.
28:01Chucky manages
28:02to make his way
28:03into the insane asylum.
28:05He may or may not
28:06have had help
28:08from a certain
28:08sexy woman
28:10wearing five-inch stilettos.
28:12And he sort of
28:14wreaks havoc.
28:15And it's really,
28:17it's crazy.
28:20If you're a Chucky fan,
28:21there's a lot
28:22of really fantastic things.
28:24For example,
28:25the little boy
28:25who was in the original
28:26Child's Play
28:27who was terrorized
28:28by Chucky,
28:29he's in this movie now.
28:30But he's his real age.
28:32He's not like me.
28:33I'm apparently
28:33the only person
28:34that has to stay
28:34the same age.
28:36But now he's like 35.
28:37He's his bearded vigilante.
28:39And he's out to get his own.
28:42So he's really,
28:44he has it in for Chucky.
28:45I don't know why.
28:46He's been very angry
28:48all his life.
28:48He's been scarred
28:49by his childhood experiences.
28:51So he's in this movie.
28:53And then there's
28:53a lot of other surprises.
28:55It's very entertaining.
28:58But it's really,
28:59it's totally insane.
29:00Wouldn't you agree?
29:01I would agree.
29:01I would totally agree.
29:02I finished it this morning
29:03at my desk.
29:05Yes.
29:05And it was like
29:06I had a little bit of
29:07like ducking behind
29:08the monitor.
29:08It's gory.
29:09It's gory.
29:09But if you watch it like this
29:11and you say
29:11it's just a movie.
29:13And when you see like
29:14body parts flying
29:15through the air
29:16you go,
29:16ha ha,
29:16it has special effects.
29:18Like,
29:18ooh,
29:19that's like,
29:19that's a plastic body organ
29:21covered in fake blood.
29:23That's what I do.
29:24Sometimes,
29:24you know,
29:25for my job
29:25I have to watch
29:26things that are
29:27quite unpleasant.
29:28Like my own movies.
29:29And that's what
29:30I tell myself.
29:31I'm like,
29:31oh,
29:32Tony,
29:33Tony Gardner
29:34who does all.
29:35He was in,
29:36when I see horrible things
29:37I say,
29:37he must have been
29:38in the shop all day
29:39creating that special effect.
29:41So,
29:41but it's very clever
29:42and witty
29:43and we've shot
29:45in a Winnipeg
29:46snow everywhere.
29:47And then,
29:48you know,
29:48of course when Tiffany
29:49shows up
29:49she is wearing
29:50a red dress.
29:52You know,
29:52it's sort of like
29:53when they have a party
29:55and they're like
29:55it's a white party
29:56and then the vamp
29:58shows up
29:58and she's wearing
29:59a red dress
29:59because she's like
30:00fuck your white party.
30:01I want to stand out.
30:03So,
30:03I did like that
30:04that he made
30:05a red outfit for me.
30:06It's amazing.
30:07So,
30:07you guys check it out.
30:08Check it out.
30:09Clever,
30:09witty,
30:10well-dressed
30:10describes you.
30:11Clever,
30:12witty,
30:12well-dressed.
30:13Hot,
30:13hot,
30:14hot.
30:15And if you get,
30:16okay,
30:16I have to do the promo thing.
30:18Okay,
30:18do you know it?
30:19No.
30:20Because I always assume
30:20the host knows it.
30:21No.
30:21Okay,
30:22so check out
30:23Cult of Chucky
30:23coming to VOD
30:25which is short
30:26for Video On Demand
30:28and also Blu-ray.
30:29If you do the Blu-ray
30:30you get all the extras,
30:31you get deleted scenes,
30:32probably all the stuff
30:33that I did
30:34that Don didn't want me to do.
30:35Everyone is laughing.
30:36He's like,
30:37okay,
30:37now do the script.
30:38And also,
30:39they show backstage
30:40like how they put
30:41things together.
30:43And I would say
30:44go the Blu-ray route
30:45but if you don't want
30:46to go the Blu-ray route
30:48you can do the VOD
30:49but once you see it,
30:50once you do the VOD
30:51then you're going to be like,
30:52oh,
30:52I want to see it again
30:53because I missed something
30:54and then you're going to be like,
30:55ah,
30:56I could have saved money
30:56if I just got the Blu-ray
30:58right in the very beginning.
31:00And it's setting it up
31:01for another Chucky movie.
31:02It is true.
31:02Chucky will never die,
31:03like I said.
31:03Chucky will never die.
31:04She'll be in the Chucky movies
31:05until the end of time.
31:06Until the end of time.
31:07And also just for more
31:07Jennifer Tilly,
31:08go to her Instagram
31:09as I did.
31:10At Jennifer Tilly.
31:11My Instagram is cleverly titled
31:13Jennifer Tilly.
31:14As is my Twitter.
31:15On Twitter I'm
31:16at Jennifer Tilly.
31:18And also please check out
31:19thehollywoodreporter.com
31:20for all the news
31:21on Jennifer Tilly
31:22and the cult of Chucky.
31:22Yes, and check out Chris.
31:24And Chris Gardner.
31:24So fabulous.
31:26You too.
31:26Thank you so much
31:27for being here.
31:28This was really fun.
31:28Thank you so much.
31:29I like talking to you.
31:30Can we keep talking
