Understanding gut symptoms can be confusing, especially when IBD and IBS sound so similar.
In this video, Dr. Piyush Bawane, Clinical Lead – Medical Gastroenterology, Kauvery Hospital Radial Road, Chennai, clearly explains the difference between these two conditions.
00:00Now, let's discuss about IBS and IBD, the most confused conditions among the gastroenterology patients.
00:12IBS means Irritable Bowel Syndrome and IBD means Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
00:17IBS is a clustration of symptoms in patients with abnormal pain, diarrhea or constipation.
00:23On the other hand, IBD is a sister of two diseases, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease,
00:28in which there are literally ulcers in the intestine of the patient.
00:31For IBD, there is no clear trigger as such.
00:34On the other hand, IBS is triggered by certain factors like stress, hormones, some medications and especially food.
00:42How to detect?
00:43IBS is usually clinical diagnosis based on your symptoms.
00:46The doctor will diagnose IBS, though he may rule out other diseases via some investigations.
00:51Though certain symptoms are very common in both of the diseases like IBS and IBD,
00:55such as abdominal pain and altered bowel habits.
00:58But certain dangerous symptoms such as anemia, fever, severe pain abdomen, joint pain, skin rashes and other complications are more common in IBD.
01:07IBS rarely has such complications.
01:10Coming to the treatment part of IBS versus IBD.
01:12Usually, the lifestyle modification and diet is a basic treatment for IBS patients.
01:17On the other hand, IBD requires certain special treatments such as few medications to target their immunity of the patient
01:24and sometimes surgical treatment is required in IBD patients.
