00:30The previous snap, I'm sure the Chargers made the official on that side aware of what was going on.
00:35Big play now to the 43, Hampton the back. Here they come. Watson chasing Herbert. Got him!
00:41What a play! Sacked back to the 49. Losing six.
00:47Galen Watson comes up with his second sack of the season on the fly off the edge.
00:52Watson's going to be coming from off the screen here. He's out to the right, lined up, pressed on the slot.
00:57He works around the edge. There's nobody there. Herbert knows that, so he tries to take off and run.
01:02And when he gets out to the side, there's no receivers on that side of the field.
01:07Watson continuing the pursuit.
01:10A couple sacks now for the Chiefs defense.
01:12They came in with only 23. They've got an interception today. Only their eighth of the season.
01:18The loss, second down, 16.
01:21Hart, the bra, almost intercepted again, trying to scoop it in.
01:25Incomplete over there was Chamari Connor.
01:27It's third and 16.
01:31Well, at that time, the pressure, Bolton comes right up the middle. Nobody blocks him. Watch him come right here.
01:36He's working right through the middle of the field. Nobody picks him up.
01:40He hesitates and ends up jumping.
01:43I'll tell you what, Herbert's lucky. Just floating the ball in the middle of the field here.
01:47Last year, the Chargers only had the nine turnovers all season.
01:51They've already had 17 coming into today, and we saw the interception earlier in the game.
01:56Six in the secondary for the Chiefs.
01:59Hampton the back, third and 16. Caught.
02:02It's Allen going backwards to Hampton. Diving shy.
02:06They get hardly anything on the play.
02:08Chiefs run it. It's fourth and long.
02:11Here comes the punting unit. Chiefs defense was on that one.
02:14Well, if you're wondering, yes, that's a lateral, so it can hit the ground.
02:18So if he had picked it up off that skip, Keenan Allen's going to be lined up to the outside,
02:24comes in, hits him on a slant.
02:26Which is one of the purposes. You throw it backwards like this in case you have plays like that.
02:30Yep. But a good job by Bolton and the defense staying home, being ready for that trick play.
02:37Scott to punt.
02:38And Nico Remigio is back there, and here is the punt with minimal breeze on a 16-degree day.
02:50Flag thrown, fair caught, 11.
02:53Remigio was back there for the Chiefs, who didn't play last week.
02:57He was inactive for Kansas City.
02:59During the kick, holding by the receiving team number two.
03:06The penalty stops the distance to the goal.
03:08First down.
03:08On Josh Williams.
03:112.50 to go in the first half.
03:13Mahomes, a touchdown run of 12.
03:15We're at Arrowhead in Kansas City.
03:26That's our studio in New York.
03:27The Verizon Halftime Report with JB, Nate, Matt Ryan, Coach Cowher scores news and highlights.
03:34The Verizon Halftime Report in New York coming up next here on CBS.
03:38Bill Cowher was one-time defensive coach for the Chiefs under the late Marty Schottenheimer.
03:44Xavier, Xavier Worthy, is back in.
03:47Out of concussion protocol and in the game.
03:49Hunt the bat.
03:50It's outside to Rice on first and 10.
03:53Grabbed by Henley.
03:54Drags him out to about the 13.
03:56Gain a seven second down and two.
03:58Well, that's a good drive starter.
04:00You just get the ball out of your hands quickly.
04:01You get it to the outside, and they're able to push it up the field to make it second and manageable.
04:08Patrick so far, four and eight.
04:10This team has not been in this situation.
04:12Under .500 this late in the season since 2012.
04:17In that season, they were 2-14.
04:20Second down and three.
04:21Hunt the bat.
04:24And Mahomes, five of nine, through the air.
04:28And Hunt again.
04:29Tries to cut.
04:30Grabbed in the play by Owe.
04:32They got him in an October trade from Baltimore.
04:34No gain in the play.
04:35Third down and three.
04:36Well, basically, you're just running away from the rotation of the safeties.
04:41Derwin James drops to the left, run the ball to the right.
04:43But Owe is able to make the tackle for loss.
04:45At the two-minute warning.
04:47The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Old Navy.
05:01And by Fresh Pet.
05:04Healthy food fresh from the fridge.
05:0717 here in Kansas City.
05:14Coming up, the Verizon Halftime Report.
05:16JB and the guys.
05:17Scores and news.
05:18The Verizon Halftime Report.
05:19Next, from our CBS studios in New York.
05:23Two timeouts.
05:23Trent, third and four.
05:25Chiefs by seven.
05:26That may bring Kelsey.
05:31He's already got a 17-yard reception over to the near side.
05:35Third down and four.
05:37Pacheco the back.
05:38They go to Rice.
05:39And he corkscrews for the first down.
05:41Henley tripped him up.
05:43James finishes him off at the 23 gain of 11 on third and four.
05:46Well, what a move by Rasheed Rice after catching that ball.
05:50Hart was right there to make the tackle.
05:51And the pivot to the outside.
05:53Was able to get him free to get the first down.
05:55Poley the block at the left tackle.
05:57It's worthy outside.
05:58Dancing over there with still.
06:00And belted out of bounds near the 26 on that first and ten.
06:04It is a gain of four.
06:07Out of bounds he goes at 136.
06:08Well, and hard to believe here we are closing in on halftime.
06:12And neither team has 100 yards of offense.
06:14Some of it's the cold weather.
06:15Some of it's the fact that both offensive linemen,
06:18both sides' offensive lines are beat up and trying to establish the run.
06:22But the response of both defenses has been very, very good today.
06:28What do they call a timeout?
06:29Sean Hockley.
06:35Are they talking about the spot?
06:36I think Harbaugh was bringing up something.
06:40That play is under further review.
06:46Inside two minutes, everything is initiated by the booth upstairs.
06:51Let's look at Sean Hockley, his dad, Ed Hockley.
06:53There were 12 men on the field, on the defense, on the previous play.
06:57This five-yard penalty will be enforced from the previous spot.
07:00It'll be first and five.
07:01Want to count them?
07:05Well, let's just circle them running off the field here at the top.
07:09I like when you count better.
07:11Oh, yeah.
07:11Like, all that is like, we don't have that much time.
07:14We're just going to, like, circle and run it off the field.
07:16Not in time.
07:18Not in time.
07:20So, because it is under two minutes, that's obviously reviewed by up top,
07:24and that's why the officials blew the play dead.
07:28Hunt the bat, first and five.
07:30And again, a couple timeouts for the Chiefs.
07:32Chargers have their three.
07:34And Mahomes at the air, six of ten so far.
07:46Underneath the hunt.
07:48We got a block in the play from Keith Humphrey,
07:50and he is brought down by James.
07:53Oh, another down.
07:53Oh, is that Moore again?
07:55Timeout for an injury.
07:56It is back at the, no, that is Moore.
07:59Yep, it is at Jalen Moore again.
08:03Kansas City is charged at timeout for an injury inside of two minutes.
08:08So Hunt got it and went, and Jalen Moore is down.
08:14I'm not sure what, if it was, it looks like maybe Tartt, did Tartt hit, run into him?
08:28From behind, you got the right guy, kind of a blind side hit by Tartt, just in the unfolding of the play.
08:41Well, and you see the right, their left leg kind of locked out when that happened, so.
08:46Injury timeout will step aside.
08:49And for the second time today, the start and right tackle for the Chiefs, Jalen Moore is out.
08:58He was starting for the injured, Jawan Taylor, to begin with.
09:01He's usually their swing offensive tackle.
09:05Now, Chu Godrick, who was just elevated off the practice squad, is in for a second time today.
09:11Hunt the back.
09:13First and ten.
09:15Bolle the block.
09:17Mahomes on the move and brought down by Owe.
09:19And that was a gain of three, and he's out to the 39.
09:26Well, Owe flushed him out, and Tui Pelotu was right there to hit him.
09:30Mahomes wanted to throw, but it would have been, ended up batted in the air, so he decided to tuck it and keep it.
09:35Second down and seven.
09:37And they go out here.
09:38Here comes Worthy.
09:39He'll dance and try.
09:41And still will knock him out of bounds.
09:43Clock at 56 seconds.
09:45A catch and run to the 35.
09:47He picks up 26 on the play.
09:49Well, this is just a rope out to the left sideline that Worthy just want to come back to the, you see him at the top of the screen.
09:59He catches it and uses the speed to burst inside, but then realizing he needed to get out of bounds.
10:06Wotker warming up on this drive.
10:08They got passes to Rice of 11 and 7.
10:11Right there, 26.
10:13Worthy, a catch and run.
10:14Now, they're back into Charger territory at the 35 with a first and 10.
10:18Hunt is on the move and Mahomes to the air.
10:22He's in as he throws.
10:23It's incomplete.
10:25Looking for Kelsey.
10:26The coverage by Henley.
10:27It'll be second down.
10:28Well, the time collapsing for Patrick Mahomes as he's trying to slide and buy time, but this has to unload it.
10:44Last week, this defense held Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts to 52% completion.
10:50Second lowest of the season for him.
10:53Today, Mahomes at 61%.
10:55Second down and 10.
10:58And they come to Rice.
10:59Out of bounds at the 29.
11:01Hit there by Benjamin St. Juice on a gain of six.
11:05So now third and a handful to go.
11:07Third and fourth.
11:08Well, already the fifth reception of the day for Rasheed Rice, but just 39 yards.
11:17Using him in the short passing game.
11:19This is going to be a quick out.
11:30Third down for Pacheco, the running back.
11:33The circle Kelsey.
11:35Here goes Mahomes.
11:36He's looking deep and to the side with coverage and incomplete.
11:40Looking for Worthy.
11:41No penalty flag.
11:43St. Juice wise there.
11:46It's fourth and four.
11:47They're going to try for three.
11:49And the defense of the Chargers.
11:52And again, with no penalty flag in the field.
11:54Hold him out of the end zone again in a late game, a late first half drive.
11:58The crowd obviously not happy with the no call as Worthy's trying to get through the ball.
12:09I think it was a pretty good no call.
12:10I don't think that was nearly as bad as the missed one earlier with Thornton down the middle of the field.
12:15But you can understand why that was a no call just because it was a little back and forth.
12:2047-yard field goal is good.
12:21And the Chiefs are up by 10.
12:24Harrison Breitker puts it through.
12:2647-yard field goal.
12:27His second today.
12:29And from Arrowhead, we'll be back in 30 seconds after this.
12:34A Chewy order is on the way for Hunter, who finds anything he puts his nose to.
12:39This week, Mom shops Chewy to get a $30 e-gift card for gifts Hunter loves hunting down.
12:45For low prices, for holidays with pets, there's Chewy.
12:50Walmart Express delivery for a Chad Hoobucks.
12:54Who knew Walmart delivers that fast?
12:57I hope your situation ship likes it.
13:07The Chiefs has got another field goal, Trent.
13:0947-yarder, up by 10.
13:11And let's widen our lens here.
13:13Your first-half thoughts.
13:14Well, I'm going to go back to that call one more time.
13:16I think if Xavier Worthy had sold it a little bit more.
13:19I think if he had, like, jumped and maybe attempted for the ball and then St. Juice is running through him, I think, but just based on what we saw, it ends up being a good no call.
13:30But if he, like, jumps and kind of makes a—you almost have to act a little bit more on that, and I think to draw the attention of it.
13:39Butcher with a couple field goals, another kickoff right now for him, and DeAndre Lambert-Smith will take it.
13:47And the Charger return man finds a gap, and Butcher will work his way in, knock him down, making the tackle.
13:5635-yard return.
13:58A big day of college basketball coming up.
14:02CBS Sports Classic featuring St. John's taking on Kentucky.
14:06Then, North Carolina and the Buckeyes of Ohio State.
14:10Later on, Houston against Arkansas.
14:13Inside college basketball.
14:15We'll get things going at noon on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
14:20Kevin, that was a huge return because now the Chargers with three timeouts.
14:24Great field position here, and Dicker, who's one of the best kickers in the NFL.
14:29This is—
14:29Herbert underneath.
14:32And incomplete.
14:33This is a good opportunity for them to—
14:35No, we got it.
14:36Allen got that ball.
14:37Great catch.
14:38Watson right there.
14:40No, no, no, I was going to say, he did not—
14:42It didn't look like—it looked like it bounced.
14:46Let's see.
14:46He's looking right back into the sun, and—
14:49Hard to see, and we were blocked out.
14:50We couldn't see the ball.
14:51Not able to come up with it, but—
14:52You're right.
14:53They have an opportunity here, with the timeouts in their pocket, to go down and get some points,
14:58and then they get the ball first in the second half because they won their point toss into first.
15:02Minimal wind, as we talked about.
15:04You just saw Dicker warming up.
15:06The running back is Fidel.
15:08And Herbert to the air.
15:10Here comes Jones.
15:11And the pass.
15:12Caught.
15:13Harris caught the ball at the 25 of the Chiefs.
15:17He is down.
15:18What a catch on a terrific 35-yard completion by the quarterback, Justin Herbert.
15:25First, it starts with—
15:27First, that's an incredible catch.
15:29And he's able to bring it in.
15:32Looks like the ball hits the ground, but does it move?
15:35Does he have control of it?
15:37That's why he's down.
15:38I believe he got the wind knocked out of him landing on the ball like that.
15:41Working on the rookie, Noel Williams.
15:44And that arm may have been under it, but it was moving.
15:48You could see.
15:53Well, what a great job by Justin Herbert.
15:55Wow.
15:56What a throw.
15:56Chris Jones was this close to coming up with the sack and affecting that throw,
16:02and Herbert put it right over the shoulder.
16:04However, the previous play is under further review.
16:08Let's get a look now with our rules analyst, Gene Steratore.
16:13Gene, what do you think?
16:13It was moving as he was descending.
16:15Yeah, I don't think that was secure, Gene.
16:17I think there is some movement.
16:18The thing I get worried about sometimes, fellas, if we slow it down so much,
16:22it appears like what may be just subtle movement in real time starts to look like he hasn't possessed it.
16:28But to me, it doesn't fall in the clear and obvious category that would be inclined to then overturn that.
16:36Close play, I don't disagree with you that the ball's making contact.
16:39I see that left hand there in a cradle.
16:42He's under it, right, Gene?
16:43I just don't see significant movement.
16:45His arm was under it.
16:47I think we've got to remember that these things have to be clear and obvious to overturn them.
16:51That doesn't fall in that box, Tamika.
16:53And I don't think, Gene, they're going to over—although they're still looking right now,
16:56but we'll see.
16:59And he's conferring with New York in that headset as they all take a look at it and try to figure it out.
17:05Watch it again.
17:11Couple things at play there.
17:13Outside shoulder, getting the feet in.
17:15Well, he's about to get hit.
17:17He steps up in the pocket.
17:18He's under pressure.
17:19He throws it over the outside shoulder.
17:21Holy cow.
17:22And then, as Gene said, it's easy to do it in super slow-mo and see what it is.
17:27But we got to see that last replay in real time and just how difficult it is.
17:33But what an incredible placement of that throw.
17:36And Harris is playing for the injured Quinton Johnston,
17:39who was injured in practice Friday with a groin strain.
17:44And Sean Hockley has looked at it and conferred.
17:46The ruling of a completed pass stands as called.
17:49It's first down.
17:50To the 23 of the Chiefs on a big-time throw with a terrific catch
17:55and a much-needed big-time gain for this Charger team.
18:00And, Gene, again, you heard the ruling, and you agree, I'm assuming.
18:04Yeah, sure do.
18:04And I'd love to see that real-time, guys,
18:06because then you really get an appreciation
18:08of what the officials are doing down on that field in real-time.
18:12When you're running fast speed,
18:13it brought me back home for a second, quite honestly.
18:16But, yeah, if you're watching this one, guys, just taking a look there.
18:19I mean, again, we're frame by framing.
18:21I don't think anything really moves significantly enough to overturn it.
18:24Well, no clear and obvious, as you said, Gene.
18:27So the play stands.
18:28And, Trent, as you mentioned, a big return to the 40 on the kickoff.
18:32That's what really helped them get this thing going.
18:34That's what set this thing up.
18:35Yeah, they had the kickoff return to the 40
18:36and then able to get that big throw there.
18:39With the timeouts in their pocket,
18:42obviously the timeout happens because of the injury and then the review.
18:48Los Angeles was calling a timeout at the end of the play.
18:50Please set the game clock to 21.
18:5221 on the game, please.
18:53Thank you.
18:57Nonetheless, the pass, the pressure applied on Herbert.
19:01Outside, shoulder throw.
19:03Both feet down, heavily covered.
19:05What a play.
19:06What a play.
19:07So Vidal is the back.
19:11Two timeouts.
19:12Herbert to the air.
19:13Hart the block at the right tackle.
19:15Chased by Amenahu.
19:16And he throws it to the side.
19:18It's second down and 10.
19:19Clock at 16 seconds in the first half.
19:23Well, we talk so much about Patrick Mahomes and his feet
19:25and how he buys time.
19:27And what gets overlooked is how good Justin Herbert is at the same thing.
19:31And that's not kind of what you think of
19:33because of a taller, lankier, step-in-there type of thrower that he is.
19:39And this is his capability and the way he's able to use his legs to extend plays
19:44as you see him go to the ground and protect that left hand.
19:4816 seconds in the two timeouts still.
19:51Two tight ends, two wide.
19:53But Elva back, second and 10.
19:58Herbert.
19:58And he goes underneath and grabbed right here by Ladd McConkie.
20:02Out of bounds.
20:03Cook.
20:05L.R. Sherm across the way.
20:06Gain is seven.
20:07Clock at 11 seconds.
20:09Ball to the 16.
20:12Well, McConkie that time lined up in the slot.
20:14Just a quick little out route.
20:16Looking back into the sun.
20:17Able to secure it.
20:18Get out of bounds.
20:20Still the two timeouts in 11 seconds.
20:22So you can do something in the middle of the field here.
20:25Is this a problem when you play here with half the field and sun, half in shadow?
20:29Different directions looking into the sun.
20:32And there's definitely a home field advantage here.
20:35I think earlier in the game, McConkie had a punt return that he let go
20:38because he couldn't completely see it.
20:40I'd yell the bat.
20:41Third and three.
20:42Herbert.
20:43Here comes Kowaktis.
20:44And to the end zone.
20:45Caught!
20:46Touchdown!
20:47Grabbed on the play by Lambert Smith.
20:50His second catch of the season's first career touchdown reception.
20:58As incredible of a throw as Herbert threw on the one down the sideline,
21:01this one may be even better because he steps up in the pocket.
21:04Watch him as he secures it.
21:06Gets both feet down.
21:10I guess we're going to have to take another look at this now.
21:12Let's see if he hangs on to the ball.
21:14It's coming loose.
21:17But then grab.
21:18I know.
21:18Let's see if it hits the ground, though.
21:19It looks like he keeps his hand underneath it.
21:22But that ball was coming loose, and security quickly ruled a touchdown.
21:26Lambert Smith with his second.
21:28And there's the extra point.
21:30And I think they are going to look at it.
21:32Timeout.
21:32Los Angeles.
21:33Their second.
21:3430-second timeout.
21:36LA takes the timeout.
21:38On the extra point.
21:40Try here by Dicker.
21:41So, Keiondre Lambert-Smith, second career reception, first career touchdown reception.
21:48But I want you to watch Herbert.
21:49Watch this.
21:50He steps up in the pocket.
21:51Now, watch.
21:51He jumps.
21:52He jumps and throws because he knows his arm's about to be hit.
21:55So, he's twisting his body and jumping in the air.
21:58Watch this.
21:58He jumps in the air.
21:59I can't stress how difficult.
22:06I'm sure it is.
22:08Dicker with one more.
22:1013-10.
22:12And the Chiefs lead is down to three.
22:14And for the quarterback, Justin Herbert, his 23rd touchdown pass of the season.
22:23Jalen Watson's going to be the one coming free.
22:26Right there.
22:27It looks like he's going to hit his arm.
22:31And Becton's in at guard.
22:33And Becton just barely gets a piece of him.
22:35But Herbert feels it and has to almost jump throw with a twist to get that ball to the back line.
22:46And then the catch is outstanding in the back.
22:49So, a couple of really good plays for the Chargers offense.
22:53It was.
22:54Remember, they had the pass to Harris for 35, which was a spectacular throw and catch.
22:59Akaki caught one for seven.
23:02And the kickoff return with a look at Greg Roman, who is the offensive coordinator for the number 11 offense.
23:11And working with the terrific quarterback, Justin Herbert.
23:14Well, after Bucker gave him a 10-point lead, is that kickoff return that got it to the 40 and made this drive possible based on the field position.
23:22On the 10, it will be Taekwon Thornton.
23:25And he will swerve his way past the 35, and zeroes on the clock, and halftime is here.
23:34This is the end of the first half.
23:35Touchdown run by Mahomes of 12.
23:3716-yard touchdown pass by Herbert.
23:41Chiefs have led the entire first half.
23:43Up now, 13-10 at the half, and downstairs to Melanie.
23:46Thanks, Kev.
23:47Andy, you guys have a three-point lead heading into the locker room outside of the Mahomes rushing touchdown.
23:52What's held your offense back from finishing drives with touchdowns?
23:55Yeah, well, we've got to do better on the catches and on the runs that we've had, you know.
24:00So, we're not getting quite enough yardage.
24:02We'll take care of that, though, this second half, Melanie.
24:05Thank you, Andy.
24:05Appreciate it.
24:07All right.
24:07The Kansas City Chiefs needing to win to stay alive for all intents and purposes.
24:13And the Chargers at number five in the AFC.
24:16First half highlights now from Verizon.
24:19Temperature here in Kansas City at Arrowhead has risen to 22, and the Chiefs lead 13-10.
24:28We'll check in with Melanie Collins on our sideline in just a second.
24:31Kevin Harlan alongside Trent Green.
24:33Justin Herbert began a little slowly today, expected with the cold temperatures.
24:38But, boy, did he finish with a flourish in the first half.
24:40Yeah, he really did.
24:41And that 22 degrees you're talking about, that's got to be in the sun, not in the shade.
24:45That's for sure.
24:46But Herbert, as you said, struggled a little bit early, and it was the pressure.
24:50He's been under a lot of pressure.
24:51We talked about all the offensive line injuries and changes they have.
24:54But watch these last two throws on the final drives before the half.
24:57The touchdown throw right here.
24:59He jumps in the air and turns his body to avoid the sack and puts it on the back line.
25:03And just an incredible, incredible job by Justin Herbert to adjust to things and come up making plays.
25:09You see the numbers here throughout the first half, and they're going to get the ball first to start off this second half.
25:17Chargers come in 9-4.
25:19They've won two in a row in five of six.
25:22Currently number five in the AFC playoff picture.
25:25They have some games on the road in addition to day coming up.
25:30So they've got their hands full, but they've been terrific.
25:34They have been five and one in close games.
25:37They've beat the Super Bowl champions this past Monday in overtime.
25:42They've been able to accomplish quite a bit, and that offensive line has taken a lot of different looks,
25:48losing both their starting tackles and others along the way.
25:53Top two running backs were knocked out two for most of the season.
25:56So to be where they are is pretty remarkable.
25:59Well, and it comes down to me, one-score games.
26:01You mentioned they're five and one in one-score games and have handled that very well.
26:06Lambert Smith will return it and gets taken down on the play by Jamari Conner.
26:14Let's go downstairs.
26:15And moments ago, it was Melanie Collins with the coach of the Chargers.
26:20Well, Jim, a big-time touchdown there to end the half and pull within three.
26:23What allowed your offense to get going?
26:24That was going to be a great execution, starting with Justin Herbert, the protection, and a couple big-time catches.
26:31What was your message to the team at the half?
26:32We're in a good spot.
26:33Keep working, and let's have our best half of football of the season.
26:37Thank you, Coach.
26:37Thanks.
26:38Heidel is the bat.
26:40That is typical Harbaugh.
26:41He has built his foundation on faith and energy and affirmation.
26:48First and ten.
26:49Herbert and time in the cup and downfield and incomplete for Aranda Ganston with the coverage on the play by Jamari Conner.
26:56And a flag has been thrown.
26:57On the far-shide line at about the 42-yard line.
27:02Before the pass was thrown, holding defense number 20.
27:06It's a five-yard penalty for Aranda.
27:08And no Williams.
27:15Well, Williams is going to be matched up on Harris.
27:18Watch this combination right here.
27:21He's trying to clear out.
27:23He's trying to clear out.
27:27Definitely was contact past that five-yard mark.
27:34Vidal the bat, first and ten.
27:37And Kamani Vidal is knocked down by Jamari Conner at the 39.
27:42And the gain of five.
27:43Second down and five.
27:45They use Matlock in so many different ways.
27:48I mean, they use him as an offensive lineman, a defensive lineman, a fullback.
27:51He's catching the ball in the flat.
27:52That time, lead blocking kicked out the end so Vidal could get inside.
27:56That just, you look at some of the numbers there.
28:00There's Matlock.
28:02Third season.
28:03Incredible athlete when you consider all that they ask him to do and he's able to handle it.
28:09Second down and five.
28:11Herbert 10 and 16 through the air.
28:13Contero is on the move.
28:17Johnston out with an injury.
28:19And they go underneath.
28:21And Keenan Allen swung around, runs out of bounds, ushered by Cook.
28:26Picks up 11 on second down and five.
28:29It's a first down to the 48 of the Chiefs.
28:33Keenan Allen, just the consistent factor for the Chargers.
28:37Just a quick little route here, but not able, Bolton not able to wrap him up and bring him down.
28:42And he escapes to the outside to pick up the first down and get him across midfield.
28:49Allen comes up with his fourth catch today.
28:57It's Vidal.
28:57Salyer, a block.
29:00He'll cut inside wisely.
29:01Another flag.
29:03Williams, the tackle.
29:04And as it stands right now, he works his way to the 44.
29:12Holding by the offense number 68.
29:15Ten-yard penalty.
29:17First down.
29:17Salyer getting his third consecutive start at left tackle today.
29:21They've had a lot of left tackles.
29:23In fact, they've had four different starting left tackles this season from Taylor to Ault.
29:31The holder call is right there.
29:33I thought Karloftis was getting held back here by Gadsden.
29:40But as you said, Salyers didn't get called.
29:44Chargers trying to sweep the Chiefs this season, winning the opener in Brazil.
29:50First and 20.
29:52It's outside.
29:53And the catch by Ladd.
29:54McConkie got away on the play from Knowles.
29:57And he is inside the 46 to the 45 of the Chiefs.
30:03Ladd McConkie, the catch of 13 on first and 20.
30:08Quick little out route here.
30:10The thing is, is there are two missed tackles.
30:12So first, Cook misses him.
30:15And then the wrap-up doesn't happen before Connor brings him down.
30:19Cook swipes right there.
30:21Go, go, go, go.
30:23So they got the run of five from Vidal.
30:2611-yard pass to Allen.
30:2813 right there to McConkie.
30:30Second and seven.
30:31Hampton with the call.
30:33Tackle made by Tranquil.
30:34Falling on him at the 40 with a gain of five.
30:38Third and short.
30:39And Tranquil is slow to get up, as is Knowles.
30:46Knowles spent the first seven weeks on the practice squad.
30:49A rookie free agent from Florida State.
30:50And they're going to take him off.
30:52Well, I think Hart was the one that drove him into the ground on that one.
31:05Nice drive for the Chargers to begin the second half.
31:08Into Chiefs territory.
31:10You're going to see right there.
31:13Egg whip.
31:15Maybe.
31:18Third down two.
31:20The stutter step by Hampton.
31:22And the drive.
31:23And the tackle by Hicks.
31:25And he's got the first mel to the 36.
31:27Well, we talked to Jim Harbaugh about the frigid conditions for this game today.
31:30And he said, I'm kind of an expert on that.
31:32He grew up in Michigan, which he said is practically Canada.
31:35His dad would tell him to go play outside.
31:37And told him to get his feet moving and keep them moving.
31:39And he'd lock the door behind him.
31:41And he said, I spent all those years in Chicago playing.
31:43It's about moving your blood.
31:44We really got a full anatomy lesson on the human heart from Jim Harbaugh.
31:48It really all came down to just don't let yourself be still enough to get cold.
31:53Love the story.
31:54His dad told him to go outside.
31:56And as you said, lock the door.
31:57They heard the door lock.
31:58And they're like, well, we better get moving.
32:00And he'll be back.
32:01First and ten.
32:02Matt locked the block.
32:03Matt locked his second.
32:04Catch the fullback today.
32:05And he'll plow his way down near the 31 of the Chiefs.
32:10Gain of five on first down.
32:11And Bolton, for a second time, has to collect himself.
32:19We've had just a series of injuries in this game for both teams.
32:24Well, it just continues what they've had to deal with the entire season.
32:28You see Bolton right here at the end.
32:29Well, that's a big body coming at you.
32:32Matt lock once again.
32:34Using it as a receiver.
32:39Yeah, Matt lock.
32:40And Trent mentioned this earlier.
32:41He doubles as a defensive lineman.
32:43So, you get a feel for what his purpose is.
32:48Well, it's one thing to, you know, be a safety or linebacker.
32:51And you're coming up to hit a tight end, receiver, running back.
32:54But now you've got to come up and hit a 300-pound defensive lineman that's out in the flat.
32:59It's just a...
33:01He's listed at 296.
33:06I just gave him 300, though, Kevin.
33:08Yeah, that was good.
33:08No, I'm glad you did.
33:09I just rounded it up.
33:10You know what?
33:10I think he probably...
33:11I don't know if he wants to be known.
33:13It's like a guy who's 6'11".
33:14I don't want to be a 7-footer.
33:15I want to be a 6'11 guy.
33:17Well, earlier this year, we were talking about Washington, the tight end for the Steelers.
33:20And on the thing, it says it's 275.
33:22And then he comes out a week later and goes, nah, I'm really 3'11".
33:25We're like, yeah.
33:26No kidding.
33:27No kidding you're not 275.
33:29Look at it.
33:29So, we'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
33:31296 is what it has.
33:33Cochran has come in with Bolton out.
33:39Hampton the bat.
33:40Second down five.
33:41Opening drive at the second half.
33:43Hatlock on the move.
33:45And play action by Herbert.
33:47Sets up.
33:47Here comes Co-Optis.
33:48Here goes the ball.
33:49Caught inside the five.
33:52What a grab made.
33:53Gadsden, the rookie out of Syracuse, the tight end.
33:56I don't know if I've ever seen a ball go more end over end on a completion.
34:02Another Chiefs player's down.
34:0427-yard completion.
34:06That's Chris Jones.
34:0827-yard pass to the rookie tight end.
34:11Gadsden first and goal.
34:12Chargers.
34:13Well, once again, Herbert's going to use his legs after the play fake.
34:17Now, watch as he tries to escape.
34:18He steps up right here.
34:19And as he steps up, he throws it.
34:22And I don't even know how it got that far going end over end that way.
34:26And Gadsden coming up with the catch.
34:30Get it down inside the five-yard line.
34:34And Jones coming off his highest-graded game Sunday night against Houston.
34:40Injury timeout.
34:42The concern of Reed.
34:43Chris Jones going to the 10th.
34:51The decorated lineman for the Chiefs and not walking well.
34:56Well, you're going to see on the right side of the screen.
34:58Gets hit right at the last minute there, right before getting to Herbert.
35:08Right in the middle.
35:11Zion Johnson was the one with the peel-back block.
35:14Trevor Penning is the extra bat of lineman.
35:20Omari and Hampton is the bat.
35:22First and goal.
35:23Hampton the call.
35:24And tackle behind the line of scrimmage.
35:26Karloftis.
35:28He came shooting through and throws him for a loss of a body yard.
35:31Just outside the five-second goal.
35:36Well, Karloftis is going to be working upfield.
35:39Timeout for injury.
35:40He's able to undercut the guard and get to the backfield.
35:45Here's another injury for the Chiefs.
35:47Jalen Watson down at the goal line.
35:50Well, no McDuffie today.
35:52So losing Watson would be a huge loss for the secondary.
35:58Chiefs have had three missed tackles defensively on this charger drive.
36:04They only had two before the drive.
36:06But three on it.
36:08The opening one.
36:09Of the second half.
36:10The Chiefs have been blitzing quite a bit today, clearly, on the quarterback.
36:15Herbert.
36:16Well, they have to.
36:17Because that's the way they're going to get pressure.
36:18And that's the way they've had to do it most of this season.
36:21Is to try and blitz.
36:22And Spaggs has designed a lot of that over the years.
36:25As we know, he comes up with a lot of creative ways.
36:28Whether it's safeties, corners off the slot.
36:31McDuffie's really good at that.
36:32And he's not active today.
36:33Jones, I'm sitting here watching him.
36:35He's getting worked on on the table right now.
36:37So they're hoping he can come back in the game.
36:39You've got Watson down.
36:40And he's able to get up and get off the field on his own.
36:43So a lot of injuries mounting on this Chiefs defense.
36:47But now they've got to stand tough if they're trying to keep the Chargers out of the end zone.
36:53And from taking the lead.
36:56Christian Fulton has taken the place of the injured Jalen Watson.
37:01With the eyes.
37:02Second and goal.
37:05Herbert to the air.
37:07He's thrown one touchdown pass.
37:09And they were going outside for the tackle eligible Trevor Penning.
37:13It's incomplete.
37:14It's third and goal.
37:15How often do you see that?
37:16You see an extra offensive lineman.
37:18Penning's out in the left flat.
37:20A defensive lineman slash fullback Matlock is out in your right flat.
37:25So here's going to be the offensive lineman.
37:27Penning's working across.
37:29And here's Matlock, the defensive lineman.
37:30He's going to that flat.
37:31He's going to that flat.
37:34So when you're scrambling as a quarterback.
37:36I don't know if those two know the scrambled rules.
37:38The scrambled rules that receivers have to have.
37:40But Fulton remains.
37:42Vidal over back.
37:44Third and goal for Herbert.
37:47Three-man rush.
37:48Herbert on the move.
37:50The punt fake.
37:50Almost lost it.
37:51And got back just inside the line of scrimmage.
37:55Amenahu at the bottom of the pile.
37:57Fourth and goal.
37:58The defense of the Chiefs does their job.
38:01They hold him out of the end zone.
38:03They'll try for three and a tie.
38:05Will Gadsden, Keeman, Allen watch Cooks over the top?
38:10Just no separation.
38:14Vidal over there on the outside with Fulton.
38:17Fulton had to come in for Watson.
38:20So Cameron's lucky to get that ball.
38:21Do you see that ball come loose on the pump fake?
38:23He's kind of lucky to get it back and set up the field goal attempt.
38:26Dicker with a 23-yard field goal to tie it.
38:29And does.
38:30He was 5 of 5 Monday against the champion Eagles.
38:33A 46-yarder at the end of regulation to tie it.
38:36A 54-yard game winner to win it.
38:39He's got a couple today.
38:40The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Kay.
38:49The official partner of couples who love the game.
38:54Progressive.
38:55Coverage you can count on.
38:57Progressive.com.
38:59And by Uber Eats.
39:00When football makes you hungry, order Uber Eats.
39:04We're tied for the first time in this one.
39:12Dustin Herbert through the air.
39:1314-21.
39:14A touchdown and a pick.
39:16Mahomes 9-15.
39:18He had a 12-yard touchdown run to get the game started.
39:22Matt Nagy, the offensive coordinator with final instructions.
39:24Ramihio is back and retrieves it at the 4 for the Chiefs.
39:33After the 23-yard charge of field goal.
39:37And the tackle there made by Tony Jefferson.
39:4026-yard return.
39:41Back to New York.
39:42Here's Adam Schein.
39:44Kevin Trent.
39:45James Cook pounds it in.
39:4714 straight points now for the Bills in the third quarter.
39:51Patriots lead is down to 3.
39:5324-21 New England.
39:54And late third.
39:55Back to you.
39:56Buffalo 9-4.
39:58Patriots 11-2.
39:59Gigantic game in the AFC East.
40:02Here we go.
40:03Pacheco.
40:04Mahomes the shotgun snap at the 29.
40:08It was intended for Rice and jarred free.
40:12James was there.
40:14Derwin James with a big-time hit.
40:17And others as they jarred free.
40:19Second down and 10 going for Rice.
40:21Well, there's a reason why Derwin James is the best safety in the NFL.
40:24And it's because it hits and plays like this.
40:27He's just everywhere.
40:28He can play linebacker.
40:29He's big enough and he hits hard enough.
40:31He can play linebacker in this league.
40:33And then he has the cover ability to cover slot receivers.
40:37They use him in so many different ways.
40:40And he steps up.
40:40He is one of one.
40:42That Eman Maury kid up in Seattle is pretty good.
40:45Second and 10 outside Rice.
40:47Incomplete.
40:48Khalil Mack was over there in the vicinity.
40:51It's third down.
40:53Incomplete.
40:54Forward pass.
40:54You know, they had six drop passes last week.
40:56That would have been a tough catch.
40:58Yeah, drops were a big thing a week ago.
41:00And this one's a little bit behind.
41:01Hits him in the hands.
41:02I'm sure he sees Khalil Mack running right at him.
41:05So, he's watching Mack, watching the ball.
41:07And then doesn't watch the ball.
41:09So, not able to bring it in.
41:12But, yeah, you're right, Kevin.
41:13Last week, way too many drops.
41:18Rice today with five catches.
41:20Hunt the bat.
41:21Third and 10.
41:23Godrick a block.
41:24Here comes Owe.
41:26Down goes Mahomes.
41:28It's a sack back at the 18.
41:30It's the third Chargers sack.
41:33Here comes the punting team.
41:34Big time play.
41:35Owe has made a gigantic difference on this defense of the Chargers.
41:41Well, Owe against Pole out on the far side here.
41:44Look up top.
41:47Mahomes wanted to step up.
41:49But Tui Pelotu was there.
41:51He couldn't slide up in the pocket because of the pressure.
41:54Mahomes fortunate to hang on to the ball there as he's going to the ground.
41:57He had a sack against Philadelphia.
42:00He's got a couple today.
42:02And he's got seven for this season.
42:04A rises punt.
42:06And McConkie signals four.
42:09Allotted the fair catch at the 32.
42:1250-yard a rise-a-punt for the Chiefs.
42:16We're tied at 13.
42:187-53 in the third.
42:21The defense all over Mahomes.
42:23Owe with the sack.
42:24Patrick Mahomes had never had a losing record from November on.
42:34Right now, they're a game below .500.
42:366-7.
42:37Home record of 5-2.
42:40He just got sacked for a third time.
42:42And on the punt, the Chargers will take over at their 32.
42:49With the first and 10 for Herbert.
42:5214-21.
42:54By down.
42:56And Bolton couldn't get him.
42:58And then written down, Jamari Connermell allows only a gain of three.
43:03Well, guys, as you can see, Chris Jones still not out there.
43:05The athletic trainers have been working on his left hamstring.
43:08He was in a ton of discomfort on the training table down here.
43:11He popped up for a second, hopped around a bit, and then went back into the tent for more treatment.
