00:00Teddy bear in hand, over 50,000 people walked the streets of Budapest on Saturday
00:05to demand the resignation of Viktor Orban's government.
00:09They accused the administration of failing to protect vulnerable children from abuse in correction facilities.
00:17What I found most outrageous was that in a case like this, which came to light on Zöller Street,
00:24it should have been stated from the outset that all those responsible would be found
00:28and the whole matter would be investigated immediately.
00:32And what outrages me most is the cover-up that has been going on for months in this case.
00:38The protest was launched by the opposition, led by Peter Magyar,
00:42following new allegations involving a juvenile detention center on Zöller Street.
00:47Four staff members were taken into custody, including the former director of the facility,
00:53after CCTV footage was released showing him kicking a boy in the head.
00:57He's also accused of subjecting minors to physical and sexual abuse,
01:01running a prostitution ring and other crimes.
01:05Similar cases of abuse of minors in correction centers
01:08have previously caused political crisis for Orban's government.
01:13On Friday, Orban's main opponent revealed an official report dating from 2021,
01:18concluding that over one-fifth of children in public institutions had been victims of abuse.
01:24These cases of abuse that came to light were covered up at the government level.
01:31And the report published by Peter Magyar yesterday proves that the Hungarian government
01:35did nothing before or after 2021.
01:40Since the scandal came to light,
01:42Viktor Orban's government has placed all juvenile detention centers under police supervision
01:47and has condemned the violence.
