Lionel Messi’s much-hyped tour of India got off to a rocky start Saturday with angry fans throwing bottles and attempting to vandalize a stadium after many of them failed to get more than just a glimpse of their hero.

00:00Lionel Messi's three-day tour of India kicked off on a chaotic knot in Kolkata after fans ripped up seats and hurled them towards the pitch when the Argentina star cut short his walk around the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.

00:31Chaos broke out after Messi, joined by his inter-Miami team as Rodrigo de Paul and Luis Suarez and trailed by politicians, VIP and other invitees, walked around the stadium looking at times, bemused before abruptly leaving around 20 minutes after his arrival.
00:48The event chief organizer has since been detained by police following the Messi's departure from Kolkata.
00:54West Bengal's chief minister, Mamata Benaji, has now apologized to Messi and ordered an investigation into what went wrong.
