00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 smartest details
00:10in the Knives Out movies that fly under the radar.
00:2410. Ransom's Jug, Knives Out
00:27It really is amazing how much detail goes into these films, from the clever writing to the insanely detailed props and art design.
00:39For example, did you notice the jugs in Ransom's house that pretty much give away the end of the movie?
00:44Okay, but this is a photocopy of just the header of a blood toxicology report on Harlan.
00:49Marta, this is going to show the morphine overdose.
00:55So I'm screwed.
00:56Marta goes to Ransom's fancy-schmancy glass house in the woods, and we see a number of large brown jugs sitting on a shelf behind Marta.
01:03We see four jugs, but one is sitting away from the others, separated by an empty space where a fifth jug should be.
01:09In the climax of the film, we learn that Ransom used this jug as part of a Molotov to burn down the medical examiner's office.
01:16In for a penny? In for a pound?
01:20You decide you are in.
01:28Step one.
01:30Destroy all evidence of Marta's innocence.
01:339. The Portrait, Knives Out
01:36You were never anything but good to dad, and because of that, you can count on us.
01:47I thought you should have been at the funeral. By the way, I was outvoted.
01:52Another brilliant visual cue is that of Harlan's portrait.
01:55It shows the man sitting and looking rather serious, a pose befitting his wealth and power.
02:00Fun fact, he's also holding the very same knife that he used to take his own life.
02:04Playing life like a game without consequence.
02:10Until you can't tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife.
02:19But that's just a bonus.
02:20The real missable detail comes at the end of the movie, after the mystery has been solved.
02:25Marta goes into the hall and glimpses at Harlan's portrait, only this time he can be seen with a subtle smirk.
02:30It seems that Harlan is happy that the case has been solved, and that Marta has inherited his estate, just as he desired.
02:37I want you to remember something that's very important.
02:41You won, not by playing the game Harlan's way, but yours.
02:49You're a good person.
02:51Number 8. The Baseball, Knives Out
02:54Linda realizes that her husband Richard is cheating on her, and it's all thanks to a simple baseball.
03:16Here's the fun and very missable chain of events.
03:19Richard goes to destroy Harlan's letter, but finds the paper empty.
03:22He then throws the baseball sitting on Harlan's desk out the window.
03:25Blanc then finds the baseball outside, and throws it for the dog.
03:29I'm warning you.
03:31Ransom said I'm warning you.
03:34Well, you had Ransom in there. That's the kind of thing he says.
03:37You want this? You want this?
03:38The dog then gives it to Linda, who returns the baseball to Harlan's desk.
03:44And here, she sees the note that Richard had left sitting there.
03:47Knowing her father's tricks, she uses a lighter to reveal the hidden ink, unveiling Richard's affair.
03:52Bam!
03:53And the next time we see Richard, he's sporting a black eye, so he probably got a good sock.
03:57Linda! We've got to get the attorneys on the phone right now!
04:00Let's go into it!
04:02Can I ask?
04:10When did you know I had something to do with Harlan's death?
04:12Number 7. Harlan's lucidity. Knives out.
04:15Is there a problem?
04:19Is this what I just give you 100 milligrams of?
04:23I messed up.
04:25You gave me 100 milligrams of the good stuff.
04:28Excuse me, but what is the good stuff's dosage supposed to be?
04:35The movie begins as a whodunit, with Harlan Thrombey being found dead.
04:39But then the twists and the subversions begin.
04:41We quickly learn that he suffered a fatal drug overdose from his nurse, Marta,
04:45who accidentally mixed up his medications and gave him a huge shot of morphine.
04:49But then we learn this isn't actually true.
04:51Marta only thought she did, and Harlan took his own life to save her incrimination.
04:55Harlan, I have to get you help.
04:58You do as I say, and everything will be just fine.
05:04But here's the thing.
05:05Intravenous morphine acts very quickly,
05:07and such an enormous dose would have quickly left Harlan incapacitated.
05:10The fact that he was so cogent for up to 10 minutes
05:13is a major clue that he wasn't actually drugged by Marta.
05:16You gave him the correct medication, because you are a good nurse.
05:22And Harlan was...
05:23I'm sorry, Marta, but yes.
05:27Harlan was perfectly fine.
05:29Number 6.
05:30The Rothko Painting.
05:31Glass Onion, A Knives Out Mystery.
05:33My mom took me to Paris when I was six years old.
05:37First time I looked at this lady, it changed my life.
05:41You know Da Vinci invented a technique for brushstrokes that leave no lines?
05:45Miles Braun's superficiality is on full display throughout Glass Onion.
05:48Literally.
05:49For example, hanging in his living room is Mark Rothko's Number 207.
05:53Only, it's upside down.
05:55Rothko is an abstract painter known for his paintings of colored rectangles.
05:59Unfortunately, this crime clashed with the presence of Benoit Blanc.
06:04Number 207 depicts a large red rectangle above a smaller blue rectangle.
06:09Braun has it upside down.
06:10Even funnier is that the painting's full name is Number 207, red over dark blue on dark gray.
06:16So it literally tells you exactly how it goes.
06:18It's fitting that Braun doesn't know this, or doesn't even care enough to Google how it should be oriented.
06:28Number 5.
06:29The Dietary Restrictions.
06:31Glass Onion, A Knives Out Mystery.
06:33Travel details to come.
06:34Please forward any dietary restrictions.
06:36Love, and all my kisses, Miles.
06:38Miles sends an elaborate invitation to his friends, asking them to join him for a murder mystery game on his private island.
06:45At the end of the invitation, he asks for everyone to forward their dietary restrictions.
06:49Two big things about this.
06:50Once again, it proves that Miles is completely mindless and superficial.
06:55Shouldn't he know his own friend's dietary restrictions?
06:57Mr. Cody.
06:59No pineapple on that, right?
07:00Duke don't answer pineapple.
07:01There's no pineapple.
07:02But even better, this explains how he knew to poison the Duke with pineapple juice, as he would have told Miles about his allergy.
07:08As Miles has no stab, he would have read the dietary restrictions himself.
07:12After the Duke tried to blackmail him, Miles knew exactly what he could do to silence him.
07:16An allergy.
07:17He can't even have a drop.
07:19Pineapple juice.
07:21He just put pineapple juice in his whisky.
07:25It's so dumb.
07:27Number 4.
07:28Miles Playing Blackbird.
07:29Glass Onion, A Knives Out Mystery.
07:31A Knives Out Mystery.
07:31A Knives Out Mystery.
07:35A Knives Out Mystery.
07:37Miles plays Blackbird for the arriving guests, and there are so many genius things here, we don't even know where to start.
07:53According to Paul McCartney, the song was partly inspired by the civil rights movement, so by having Miles sing it,
07:58it ironically alludes to him swindling Andy out of the company, stealing her agency, and appropriating her work.
08:04Speaking of McCartney, Braun claims that his guitar once belonged to McCartney, only, McCartney famously plays left-handed, whereas this guitar is right-handed.
08:12It circles back to the painting, showing that Braun knows absolutely nothing about the things he's flaunting.
08:30Lastly, according to one famous theory, McCartney died in the 1960s, and was replaced by an imposter, just like Helen is posing as the dead Andy.
08:38You told me about Helen, your sister.
08:41Oh, wait!
08:45Helen Brand, ladies and gentlemen.
08:48Number 3. Miles' iPad. Wake Up Dead Man.
08:51What do we win?
08:53I...
08:54What do you mean, what do you...
08:56What do you want?
08:58Even in the new movie, the specter of Miles Braun remains.
09:01Benoit Blanc can be seen using an iPad in Wake Up Dead Man,
09:04even though this seems like a rather un-Benoit Blanc thing to do.
09:08Perhaps he's embracing technology.
09:09In reality, this is a cute little reference to Glass Onion,
09:12when Blanc won an iPad for miles after winning his murder mystery game.
09:16You're angry.
09:19No, Blanc, I'm, uh...
09:22Just, you know...
09:24What the hell?
09:25Not only is this a cool little detail,
09:27but we think it's positively adorable that Blanc has kept this iPad and continues to use it.
09:32It only further confirms that there is a degree of continuity in this movie series,
09:36however flimsy and unassuming it may be.
09:38I just thought maybe there was a prize or something.
09:42I...
09:42An iPad or...
09:44Yeah, okay.
09:48Fine.
09:48Yeah, no, no, the winner gets an iPad.
09:50Number 2.
09:51Some clever religious wordplay.
09:52Wake Up Dead Man.
09:53For behold, though he is struck down,
09:56the righteous son of God will rise again.
10:00Eve's apple restored to the tree.
10:02Ryan Johnson has always been a smart writer,
10:05and that is on full display throughout Wake Up Dead Man.
10:07During his unhinged Good Friday homily,
10:10Wicks proclaims that Eve's apple will be returned to the tree.
10:13While the congregation hears a simple biblical metaphor for washing away original sin,
10:17Wicks is actually demanding that the diamond,
10:19called Eve's apple,
10:20be returned to his family tree,
10:22but Father Judd beats him at his own poetic game,
10:24and he hides the apple in a literal tree,
10:27inside the new wooden crucifix.
10:28But there's more.
10:29When telling Cy that his true inheritance is in Christ,
10:32Judd isn't just offering spiritual advice,
10:35he's giving him the literal coordinates.
10:37The apple was indeed returned to the tree,
10:39and Cy's fortune was quite literally in Christ.
10:42Go to the house.
10:45The only things that you can see
10:48is all that you lack.

11:07Number 1.
11:09The Judas Foreshadowing.
11:10Wake Up Dead Man.
11:11Grace for the broken.
11:15Grace for those who deserve it the least.
11:19We don't need it the most.
11:22For the guilty.
11:28Talk about perfect timing.
11:30Ryan Johnson is known for sinking sound and image to whisper clues to the audience.
11:35In this moment is a masterclass in audio foreshadowing.
11:38Listen closely to the specific beat when Martha walks into the room to view Wix in his coffin.
11:43The precise moment she steps into the frame,
11:45Wix's voiceover explicitly describes the treacherous actions of Judas Iscariot,
11:50the man who famously betrayed Jesus Christ.
11:52As our lord was, I am betrayed by Judas.
11:56Gentlemen, may I have a moment?
11:58By sinking her entrance with the mention of history's most famous betrayer,
12:01the film subtly brands Martha as the Judas of the group,
12:04and hints that she is the one who plotted to murder Wix.
12:07It's a scathing accusation disguised as background ambience,
12:10the true telling of a master storyteller at work.
12:13Always the true threat comes from within.
12:17Remember my words.
