00:00Don't leave those porch containers bare all winter.
00:04Add some greenery and berries for a pretty decoration that will last for months on end.
00:09We will show you how with our gardening know-how.
00:30So where can you find these greens?
00:32You can begin by foraging your own property or that of a friend, with permission of course,
00:37and cut varying lengths of assorted evergreen branches to use in your arrangement.
00:42If branches are not available to you, a quick trip to your local garden center may be the best option.
00:48Businesses that sell Christmas trees often provide an ample selection of evergreen branches, winterberry,
00:54and other decorations either loose or pre-packaged for easy shopping.
00:59As far as container choices, plastic is preferred as clay may crack during the winter,
01:04unless the pots are in a well-protected area.
01:08Now that we have gathered our supplies, let's get started.
01:11It may be best to separate branches by length in order to see what you have to work with.
01:16I begin working with blue spruce.
01:19Many evergreen branches have sharp needles, so be sure to don your gloves before starting this project.
01:25Start with the largest, most erect, and upright branches in the back.
01:30This will be the base from which you build from.
01:32Don't stress about placement.
01:34I promise that no matter how you place the branches, you will end up with a beautiful porch pot.
01:39This project is very forgiving.
01:41Continue to stick the taller branches towards the back and shorter branches near the front.
01:47Fan them to each side as you fill the container.
01:50Now it's time to add the other greens.
01:52Cut them to length and stick them anywhere they fit and look nice.
01:56I continued to add boxwood, some gorgeous white pine, and finished off with western red cedar and pine cones.
02:05After adding a bright, freshly cut winterberry branch, the last step is to add a festive bow.
02:11Now you have the know-how to create an evergreen porch pot to pizzazz your porch for the holidays.
02:17And I showed you just one way to build and decorate a porch pot.
02:20Additional decorations such as artificial greenery or birch poles can be added to fill in gaps, while adding your own unique touch.
02:28Be creative and have fun!
02:30For regions with milder winters, consider adding live plants to your outdoor containers.
02:37Dwarf Alberta spruce can be added to add structure and evergreen charm, and hellebores, which add delicate early winter blooms.
02:45Red twig dogwood brings striking red stems, while wintergreen offers lush foliage with bright red berries that last throughout the season.
02:53For a selection of plants that offer long-lasting winter interest, visit our online shop at shop.gardeningknowhow.com.
03:03Once complete, it is recommended to water the pot to keep the branches moist.
03:07Continue to water weekly until the soil freezes.
03:11This type of arrangement will keep the entire winter as long as temperatures remain cool.
03:17Until next time, happy gardening!
