00:00of course Margaret Atwood talked about the colonies season one it was a specter
00:14right it was this scary dark place that people spoke of but we never got to see
00:18the colonies are a prison camp for women there are lots of different kinds of
00:22colony situations we find out in the book we are visiting one in season two
00:26we may visit others in the future but the colonies we go to is a pesticide
00:31chemical nuclear waste cleanup site where women are housed in an old barn not
00:38taken care of particularly well they're being used as labor and used up we see
00:44these unwomen who are in a whole different color palette whereas Gilead is
00:49more about contrast you see bright red bright teal strong brown strong blacks
00:54that are standing apart from the world in the colonies it's a world that is much
00:59more homogenic it's soft blues of the sky and beaten down brown yellows of a earth
01:07that has been destroyed and so the people that inhabit that world are more
01:13analogous their colors that are very diffused even the ants and the guardians
01:19are living in these harsh surroundings and they're all wearing gas masks even the
01:24horses except for the women so you understand that it's a world of
01:28destruction
