00:00Well, good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the Pentagon.
00:04A continued commitment to a pragmatic,
00:08practical application of hard power between our countries
00:12that reflect peace through strength and also
00:16hard power, real capabilities that demonstrate a deterrent
00:20effect that we all want. We may lead our departments of war, ministers of defense,
00:24but our goal is peace on behalf of the American people,
00:28the Australian people and the UK, and we pursue that together on behalf of our
00:32leadership. So it's a privilege to have you at the Pentagon. Look forward to talking more in depth about AUKUS
00:36and our partnerships, and I would be remiss also, John, if I didn't
00:40mention the passing of your paratrooper in
00:44Ukraine, and we're certainly, our thoughts and prayers go out
00:48to you and to him and his family, and it's a reflection of the sacrifice
00:52and commitment that so many make around the world. Thank you.
00:56Thank you both for your remarks about
01:00Lance Corporal George Hooley. I will
01:02pass those on to his family.
01:04I know they will
01:06appreciate that, your
01:08sentiments, and it's a reminder for us all
01:10the risks
01:12that our servicemen and women put themselves
01:14at in order to keep the rest
01:16of us safe.
01:18For the UK, AUKUS is quite simply
01:20the most important military
01:22collaboration for the
01:24last 70 years,
01:26since the US and the UK first
01:28agreed in this great city
01:30in 1958 to share nuclear
01:32technology, and just as
01:34it was back then, this
01:36partnership will be a foundation
01:38for the shared security
01:40for generations to come.
01:42It's time to deliver.
01:44And when we talk about
01:46delivery, we talk about
01:48the most powerful,
01:50most feared attack submarine
01:52the world has ever seen.
01:54The apex predator
01:56of the seas.
01:58And we talk about delivering
02:00the technologies of the future,
02:02putting our warfighters one step
02:04ahead of our adversaries,
02:06reinforcing our deterrence
02:10in the face of adversaries,
02:12and we talk about putting our
02:14industries at the leading
02:16edge of new export
02:18markets.
02:20We need more subs
02:22in the Indo-Pacific and in the
02:24Euro-Atlantic. We need more burden
02:26of sharing by America's
02:28closest allies
02:30in Australia and the UK.
02:32And as the UK
02:34steps up on European
02:36security, we know that each
02:38of the three nations have a role
02:40to play to protect our people,
02:42to keep our citizens safe,
02:44and to reinforce that
02:46global deterrence.
02:48The last 12 months has seen
02:50a lot of progress in
02:52relation to AUKUS.
02:54The last six weeks we've had
02:56the USS Vermont in HMAS
02:58Stirling, south of Perth
03:00in Australia, undertaking
03:02the most extensive maintenance
03:03of an American
03:04nuclear-powered submarine
03:05outside of America ever.
03:07And it is an example
03:08of what we are doing together.
03:10But this is a massive project,
03:12and there is so much more
03:14to do, and it's really important
03:16that we are looking at the ways
03:18in which we can now get on
03:20with this and deliver it.
03:22And I think delivery is very much
03:24the focus of the conversation
03:26that we will be having today.
03:28I'm very excited
03:30about what we can do together,
03:34the progress that we're making,
03:36but the challenges that we both need
03:38or all of us need to grab hold of
03:40as we move forward.
03:41And again, thank you,
03:42the both of you, for having
03:44this meeting today.
03:48Thank you, Richard.
