00:00Nothing much, man, just going over our Puerto Rico trip.
00:03You didn't go on a trip with us in Puerto Rico?
00:05I absolutely did.
00:07My name is Brian.
00:08Because of my weight, I'm getting left behind by my friends.
00:11So I would Photoshop myself in the picture as if I was there.
00:15That's whack.
00:15That's probably one of the wackest things I've seen today.
00:17I call my leg George.
00:20Brian has very, very bad lymphedema.
00:22A lot of people have lost their legs due to this.
00:25There's not a lot of cure for this other than
00:28it can be greatly helped by losing some weight.
00:31I'm going to give you two months to lose 50 pounds.
00:34That's a tall task.
00:36There's going to be somebody new at the end of this.
00:38Somebody I haven't met before and that's what I'm eager to do.
00:41Why are there so many stairs?
00:43Come on.
00:45You got it.
00:46You're almost at the top, man.
00:48Almost at the top.
00:50I had no idea this was going to be so hard.
00:54Daddy!
00:54Hey, baby!
00:55I'm seeing my daughter for the first time in almost two years.
01:00Hey, baby.
01:01You got to go sit down for a little bit, okay?
01:02Okay.
01:03If I do too much activity, I pay for it with pain.
01:07As a father, I feel like a failure.
01:10I'm hungry as hell.
01:13I want some pizza and some wings.
01:16I got depressed about it and I started eating the way I shouldn't eat.
01:21Give me a second.
01:22Take a breath.
01:23I'm just like, we're done.
01:28I'm not doing the surgery.
01:31I'm not going to lose the weight.
01:33I'm not just, it's over.
01:53My name is Brian.
02:01I'm 41 years old.
02:02I live in Arlington, Virginia.
02:06The person who could play football, who could play basketball, who could be the life of the
02:10party, who could be the ladies' man, he's in here.
02:14He's still in here.
02:17But with my weight, I can't do that anymore.
02:20For the last few years, I've been getting socially left behind by my friends because I'm missing
02:28out on important events.
02:29I get a little depressed, and when I get depressed, I start to eat, I keep gaining weight, and the
02:35cycle continues.
02:36My biggest meal of the day is breakfast.
02:43And that's where I would take some sausage patties, and I would put pancake batter over them.
02:49I would make a few of those.
02:51And since I can't just have one carb with the pancakes, maybe I would have a hash brown.
02:56It's never just a normal meal.
03:00It's always a normal meal, and then something else.
03:03You.
03:04You.
03:05What's up, man?
03:06Nothing much, man.
03:06Just going over.
03:08Going over our Puerto Rico trip.
03:10You didn't go on a trip.
03:11I did go on.
03:12I absolutely did.
03:14I was right there in front of you.
03:16Cropping yourself in Puerto Rico.
03:17I'm not.
03:18No, no, no.
03:18Just right there.
03:19That's it.
03:19It's me.
03:20You.
03:20As a matter of fact, that's not going to work.
03:21I'm going to flip that.
03:22But yeah, that's us in Puerto Rico, man.
03:25It was a great trip, man.
03:26That's whack.
03:27That's probably one of the wackest things I've seen today.
03:29The day just started.
03:33You could have been on that trip.
03:35I can barely walk around now as it is, man.
03:37There we go.
03:39My friends and I, we try to get out and go somewhere once a month.
03:43But because of my weight, it's just too much to do that.
03:46So certain trips they would go on, and they would post pictures.
03:50I would Photoshop myself in the picture as if I was there.
03:53Um, look, so I got a show tomorrow night, and I really want you to be there.
03:58It's going to be a lot, me and George.
04:00I have lymphedema, which is a buildup of lymphatic fluid in my leg.
04:08I call my leg George because my lymphedema knot eventually became so big, there was a gorge between my knee and my calf.
04:15So, the gorge, I began to call George.
04:20Uh, I'll, I'll, you know, I have problems getting out to D.C.
04:25That would be, what, two buses, a metro, and then a bus when I get off.
04:30It's just going, it's going to suck.
04:31I've known Brian for over seven years.
04:35Real good guy, sweet person, uh, and good, has a good, genuine heart.
04:39I've seen him in his worst moments, um, and I've never seen him like this.
04:44I hear excuses.
04:46Come to the spot, we'll have a good time, it's on me.
04:49Be there.
04:50That's all you got to do, just be there.
04:51I'll be there.
04:52All right, cool.
04:53See you tomorrow?
04:54See you tomorrow, man.
04:55I'll be there.
04:55Absolutely.
04:55Absolutely.
05:01Jeez, Kane, I've been overweight my entire life.
05:15You go to Clarendon Metro Station, right?
05:19I was always bigger than the other kids, and I got teased for it.
05:27People call me Fat Boy, Fats, Fat Boy, Fat Man.
05:31Around fifth or sixth grade, my parents divorced.
05:38I started, like, food became more of a comfort.
05:41Even though still large, I was always into sports.
05:45I've played everything you can think of.
05:47I've done Taekwondo.
05:48I played soccer.
05:50I played semi-pro football.
05:52I played basketball.
05:54And then things changed when I first got lymphedema in my leg.
05:572006, I'm playing basketball with somebody.
06:02I bumped knees with them.
06:04And immediately, my legs started to swell.
06:07Every year, it got bigger, bigger, and bigger.
06:12Step back.
06:13Doors close.
06:14I couldn't move around as much as I used to.
06:16But I did a lot of eating, so I just got bigger.
06:22Being the size.
06:23It hurts.
06:25I'm talking about back pain, hip pain, and everything takes longer.
06:30Oh.
06:44Yo.
06:45We comic-ing?
06:47It's over, yo.
06:48You missed my whole show, man.
06:49I went on last.
06:50Chilled it, by the way.
06:51Murdered.
06:51Crusted murder.
06:52Murdered.
06:53Okay?
06:54Murdered.
06:54I had to wait 30 minutes for the bus?
06:57Did you take a picture?
06:58Absolutely not.
06:59No.
06:59Someone posted a picture of Mike on stage.
07:01I could put myself right behind him.
07:02Nah, man.
07:03What else is going on with you?
07:04Any updates on Sophia?
07:08The real update on Sophia is they're going to be back in a few weeks.
07:12Where?
07:12For real this time.
07:14And, you know, whatever I got to do to get her back.
07:18I have a daughter.
07:19She's seven years old.
07:20Her name is Sophia.
07:21My daughter's mother and I, we fell in love.
07:23We had Sophia, and we broke up.
07:25But, we've always had a very healthy co-parenting relationship.
07:30When COVID really broke out, her mother and I made the decision to send her to Puerto Rico
07:35to live with her mother.
07:37At this point, I haven't seen my daughter in almost two years.
07:40And, I really miss her.
07:44I'm afraid she'll get your health back together, though.
07:46Yeah, for real.
07:47Facts.
07:48My leg hurts.
07:50I'm done with it.
07:51I'm going to take it seriously.
07:52I've been talking to this doctor in Georgia, and I think I'm going to go out and see him.
07:57I'm thinking about getting weight loss surgery.
07:59But, whatever they want me to do, I'm probably going to end up doing.
08:02And, it's a big step.
08:03This is huge.
08:04Man, we're proud of you, man.
08:05If this is what got you there, man, we got you.
08:08Appreciate it.
08:10I know it's a risk, but having weight loss surgery is my only option at this point.
08:14I don't know the consequences of what happens if my leg gets much bigger than it is.
08:19I'm scared to lose my life.
08:23Cheers.
08:24To New Directions.
08:24New Directions.
08:26Get rid of dead weight.
08:29That was tough.
08:30That was tough.
08:32God damn.
08:33Wow.
08:34I love you.
08:36We love you.
08:44What's going on, man?
08:49Thanks for coming, too.
08:51To meet Dr. Proctor, I'm going to fly for the first time.
08:55I've never phoned before because of my weight.
08:57So, luckily, I have my friend James with me just in case things go left.
09:01So, where are you heading?
09:02Uh, Atlanta, Georgia.
09:03Okay.
09:04Okay.
09:05James has been one of my closest friends.
09:08Definitely my closest confidant.
09:09I know that if James talked that I wasn't going to be able to complete this journey,
09:13he wouldn't have wasted his time coming down here.
09:17Right.
09:18Let me help you do me a favor.
09:20Yeah.
09:20Talk me out of it.
09:22Talk me out of it.
09:23Yeah.
09:25Right.
09:26Here's good for you.
09:26Right?
09:27Yeah, this works.
09:28Better work for this dude trying to get out, but it works for us.
09:32Ah.
09:32How you feeling?
09:34Anxious.
09:35Right.
09:35I was looking at the train ride, but it's 18 hours, and that's too much sitting.
09:41So, I guess I'm going to have to go with the two-hour plane ride of discomfort rather than the 18-hour train ride.
09:53Hi, Sam.
09:54How are you?
09:55You doing all right.
09:56Can you sit down?
09:58Right now, I'm coming to you, okay?
09:59Okay.
09:59Appreciate that.
10:00Yes, sir.
10:05It's embarrassing to be pushed around the airport in a wheelchair, but I'm glad to have it, because there's no way I could have made this walk through this airport.
10:19And also, invite our global service customers.
10:26Welcome to Pre-Boyfriend and us.
10:29How you doing, man?
10:29Where's your seat?
10:31Um, I have an extra seat.
10:33Should be 1C1D.
10:351C1D.
10:36So, 1CC is the I on, or D is the one right there?
10:39These arms don't go up?
10:40No.
10:41These ones don't, actually.
10:42The whole reason I got two seats was so that I would have room to prop my leg up and be comfortable.
10:53If we can't get this resolved, I'm not going to make it through this fight.
10:58This ain't going to work.
11:02I just want to know how much I weigh.
11:03Whenever you're ready, go ahead and step on up there.
11:05I am shocked.
11:13It's demoralizing.
11:14It's terrifying.
11:18I need to exercise.
11:20I never used to get this tired.
11:24It's not okay.
11:25We're done.
11:27I'm not going to lose the weight.
11:29I'm not just, it's over.
11:30It's over.
11:35These arms don't go up?
11:37No.
11:38These ones don't, actually.
11:42Then meet Dr. Proctor.
11:43I'm going to fly for the first time.
11:45But as we're on the plane, immediately I realized that I'm not able to physically fit in my seat.
11:54This is the worst thing that could happen today.
12:01I have no idea what to do.
12:02I was grateful for my friend James to come with me to Atlanta.
12:31The words he used with me is, you know, I want to see this through.
12:37And he also wanted to be on the plane with me for the first time.
12:39He kept saying that.
12:40He's like, yeah, it's your first time on the plane.
12:42I want to be there for that.
12:44So how was your first flight experience?
12:46It's only three things about flying I don't like.
12:49Taking off, flying, and landing.
12:51Other than that, it's both.
12:52You ready?
13:05I am.
13:06I am in Atlanta, Georgia at Dr. Proctor's office.
13:15When I first made the decision, I knew that this was going to be life-changing.
13:20In some respects, it's going to change my identity.
13:22I've been known as this big guy, but I'm excited about who I'm going to find.
13:28Hi, Dr. Proctor.
13:30Hey, Maggie.
13:30I have Brian from Virginia.
13:32Okay.
13:32He has lymphedema.
13:35Okay.
13:35He is here to see you.
13:36Sounds great.
13:37Appreciate it.
13:39It's always a challenge working with patients with lymphedema.
13:42There's not a lot of cure for this other than getting particular massages and certain therapies
13:48that can be applied, but nothing is going to get better until he loses weight.
13:53Hey.
13:53Afternoon, fellas.
13:54Hey, how you doing?
13:55Hey.
13:55I'm Charlie Proctor.
13:56Hey, Brian Carr.
13:57Brian, nice to meet you.
13:58James.
13:58James, nice to meet you, too.
14:00Have a seat.
14:01I'll grab a seat, too.
14:03Tell me a little bit about your leg.
14:07I call it George.
14:08So if I refer to him as George, that's where he comes from.
14:10Gotcha.
14:10I got George in October of 2006.
14:13It's been an adjustment because now it gets to a point where even just normal exercising,
14:18walking to the car or anything, it hurts my back.
14:21Yeah.
14:21Weight loss isn't going to cure that, right?
14:23Right.
14:24But it should improve it.
14:26Yeah.
14:27Has your weight been an issue for your entire life?
14:30When I was in high school, post-high school, early 20s, it wasn't a problem because I was
14:34still somewhat of an athlete.
14:36But now I judge how much weight I have to lose by how hard it is for me to get off the
14:40toilet.
14:41If I have to use the sink to get up, that's when I say, okay, it's time for me to drop
14:44a couple pounds.
14:45And then once I've lost that weight, I'm like, great, problem solved.
14:48Bring on the pizza.
14:50And it's just, I'm ready to get out of that cycle.
14:53All right.
14:53You ready to see where we're starting from?
14:55Yeah.
14:55Let's do it.
14:56Let's do it.
15:00All right.
15:00Whenever you're ready, go ahead and step on up there.
15:20597.
15:24I am shocked.
15:26This is really demoralizing.
15:27Enough of that.
15:31This is crazy.
15:34I'm scared for him.
15:36Like, for real.
15:37I'm really scared for his survival.
15:41What we're going to work towards is doing bariatric surgery.
15:45There's nothing easy about this, all right?
15:47I'm going to give you two months to lose 50 pounds.
15:49Ah.
15:50And I'm going to see you back in two months, and you're going to hit that goal.
15:52Uh, that's a tall task in two months, because lymphedema makes it hard to deal with my weight.
16:00My leg puffs, and it gets bigger.
16:02If I lose 20 pounds here and gain 10 pounds here, I haven't really lost much.
16:08That's a problem.
16:10None of this is done in a vacuum.
16:11We've got an entire team that's here to help you do this.
16:14We have dieticians to walk you through things.
16:16We have people to teach you how to cook meals and then exercise.
16:19What do you like to do?
16:20I used to take taekwondo.
16:23I haven't taken it in close to 30 years.
16:26Taekwondo.
16:28Do taekwondo.
16:29I do taekwondo.
16:29You're not going to be able to do the things that you could 30 years ago, but you will build into that.
16:34I'd like to see you do it.
16:36I don't know.
16:36I'm looking forward to it.
16:38I'm going to see if I can still break a board.
16:39There you go.
16:40All right, man.
16:41Listen, it's great to meet you guys.
16:44Hey.
16:44Thank you so much for coming all the way down to Atlanta.
16:46I really, really appreciate it.
16:47All right.
16:47I really do.
16:48It's game on.
16:49Till next time.
16:50All right, guys.
16:50Take care.
17:10I told Dr. Proctor that I had experience with taekwondo, even though it's been a very long time.
17:15And he suggested it might be time to get back into it.
17:26Brian.
17:28I am Brian.
17:29Nice to meet you, sir.
17:30Nice to meet you.
17:30My name's Nils.
17:32I'm going to be running your lesson today.
17:34Why don't we first get you in uniform?
17:36Great.
17:36No problem.
17:36Just head on down there.
17:39I've never had a student as large as Brian.
17:41When I saw his leg, I was really thinking how he could keep it safe.
17:44You know, being out of martial arts for 30 years, it's really hard to get back.
17:49But at the same time, he's willing to step up and go.
17:52Let's go ahead and take a seat.
17:53All right.
17:59There you go.
18:00Just going to stretch forward as best you can.
18:03All right.
18:04There you go.
18:06Nice.
18:07Can you stand up?
18:08Oh, boy.
18:20Let's go break something.
18:21All right.
18:22When you're going to break, you're going to hit with a palm heel.
18:24And this will take the wrist out of the equation.
18:26Get into a good fighting stance.
18:29One forward, one back.
18:30Hit this first palm heel strike.
18:33Yeah, just like that.
18:35Let's break something.
18:37Oh, baby.
18:39It's been a while.
18:47There you go.
18:48High five, man.
18:49You haven't lost it at all.
18:52To actually put my hand through the board, it feels good.
18:55I got it.
18:56Bro, out that board.
18:58Smashy, smashy.
19:03Nice.
19:04You're bored, sir.
19:07Feels good, doesn't it?
19:08It does.
19:10I am super proud.
19:12Truth be told, that's rare.
19:14So I take the pleasures wherever I can.
19:16So the key on this, we're going to hit vertical versus horizontal, because we're not wearing
19:21any wraps or anything.
19:23Just nice, easy, front reverse or tap cross, whatever you want to call it.
19:26So just hit me.
19:28Have fun.
19:29All right.
19:30A couple times.
19:32There you go.
19:37All right.
19:37Let's take a breath.
19:38Give me a second.
19:48I never used to get this tired after a few punches.
19:53That's okay.
19:56You know?
19:57It's not okay.
20:04I was very disheartened by how fast I got tired.
20:08So I wanted to be able to, you know, do it all.
20:10So this is really frustrating.
20:18I'm sorry.
20:19Sorry.
20:20I have to rest my leg.
20:29It's hard to be in this type of pain on a regular basis when you're just trying to exercise.
20:40And it almost feels like it was for nothing.
20:43So what do you want to do first?
20:44I want to go on the swings.
20:45I'm seeing my daughter for the first time in almost two years.
20:48You got to go sit down for a little bit, okay?
20:49Okay.
20:50If I do too much activity, I pay for it with pain.
20:54I hate these moments.
20:55As a father, I feel like a failure.
20:57I'm almost a week into my diet.
21:11And today, all my friends are watching a wrestling pay-per-view.
21:17And I'm at home because my leg is too swollen to go out.
21:22There are times where I can't go out and do things I want to do.
21:25And it still causes me to be depressed.
21:28And it causes me to eat.
21:29I want a deep dish pizza with cheese in the crust.
21:32You know what I'm saying?
21:34I'm hungry as hell.
21:37I want some pizza and some wings.
21:40What you girls pizza look like?
21:41I'm just like, we're done.
21:43I'm not doing the surgery.
21:44I'm not going to lose the weight.
21:46I'm not just, it's over.
21:48It's okay.
21:49But, man, I have to try to do better.
22:01How you doing, baby?
22:02I'm doing good.
22:03What did you do today?
22:05Well, we're packing some stuff.
22:08I'm really excited about seeing you next month.
22:11I miss you, baby.
22:13I miss you too.
22:14It's only a few weeks until my daughter comes to visit.
22:19And I just want to be with her.
22:21But I'm worried about my ability to be her father.
22:24Because I'm much unhealthier than I was when she left.
22:30It's important, okay?
22:31There might not be as much playtime as you like.
22:34But it's all going to be worth it, okay?
22:36Okay, chef.
22:37There are things I want to do with her.
22:40I want to take her shopping.
22:41I want to take her to play games.
22:43I want to take her to the water park.
22:44But I can't do those things.
22:46There's not a chance I'm going to be able to keep up with her.
22:49I love you very much.
22:52Love you, chef.
22:53Look, I'm going to talk to you later on, all right?
22:56Okay.
22:56All right.
22:57After talking to Sophia, I'm feeling really serious about this thing.
23:09I have to change the way I do my snacking.
23:12Protein shakes.
23:16Yogurt.
23:20Spinach.
23:22I got no excuses.
23:24We're going full speed ahead of this whole thing.
23:27You know, the closer we get, there's a lot more stairs.
23:38Why are there so many stairs?
23:40Why are you making it so hard to see?
23:42Since Taekwondo, I haven't been working out much.
23:46So today, I'm looking to make up for lost time.
23:48Today, I'm going to do something that I've always wanted to do,
23:50and that's climb the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
23:53Yeah, Lincoln's cool, but why are there so many stairs in front of me?
23:56Because you've got to appreciate the effort that you made to get to him.
24:01I can appreciate him from right here.
24:02But you need to appreciate him more.
24:06All right.
24:07Come on, you got this, man.
24:09You got this, man.
24:10Have you ever been to the Lincoln Memorial?
24:11It doesn't look like that many stairs from far away,
24:13but once you get there, there's a lot of stairs.
24:16I've got to go up the right side beneath the rail.
24:21Okay.
24:25You're almost at the top, man.
24:27Almost at the top.
24:29It's not too late to turn back.
24:30But why would you?
24:31You're right here.
24:32I know there are points when he struggles,
24:34and I just need him to keep pushing and pushing,
24:37because that's my brother.
24:38Even though that's not my real brother, that's my brother.
24:43It's not too late to quit.
24:44You are more than half.
24:45You're almost at the finish line.
24:48Come on.
24:48You got it.
24:49You can do it.
24:50You got it.
24:50See?
24:51She knows.
24:51Come on.
24:52Come on, dude.
24:53Come on.
24:53Come on.
25:05Just take it slow.
25:07Slow is my only speed.
25:14All right.
25:25See?
25:25You made it.
25:26You made it.
25:26You made it.
25:27I didn't think you could.
25:29Now you'll be able to do this to see you one day.
25:31Yeah.
25:33I walked up a lot of stairs for you.
25:36Oh, I didn't see the quiet sign.
25:39I didn't see it.
25:41You know what's funny?
25:41If I didn't make it, I was going to Photoshop myself in the top of the stairs.
25:46You ain't even had to do that.
25:48You can't do them stairs.
25:50Yeah.
25:52We walk up and down the Lincoln Monument steps, but I had to take multiple breaks.
25:58I'm just upset because my daughter's coming back to the States, and I want her to have
26:03a very active father.
26:05And I don't know if I'm going to get another shot.
26:08Oh.
26:11Today, I'm going to see Sophia for the first time in a very long time.
26:28I'm excited to see my daughter, but I have to relearn how to care for my daughter in my
26:40present state.
26:41I can give up on myself, but I'll have that option for her.
26:46Coming.
26:47I've been working my ass off.
26:52Literally.
26:52My ass, my stomach, all that stuff.
26:55Let's see where we are.
26:56But my leg has continued to get bigger.
27:02This is a problem.
27:04Coming.
27:17Today, I'm seeing my daughter for the first time in almost two years, and I'm nervous.
27:24Daddy.
27:25Hey, baby.
27:25I miss you, baby.
27:34I miss you, too, too.
27:35Oh, you're so tall.
27:37I can't even hold you like a baby anymore.
27:39Oh, I'm still going to try.
27:42Come on.
27:43So, I want you to tell me all about Puerto Rico.
27:47So, I'm going to Puerto Rico and I'm going to my grandmother's house.
28:01Sophia's mom dropped her off to spend the day with me.
28:04Having Sophia back in front of me, it's amazing.
28:07It definitely feels good.
28:10Can we go to the park?
28:12Please?
28:12Yeah, let me rest my leg a little bit.
28:18We'll go to the park, okay?
28:19Okay.
28:27So, what do you want to do first?
28:29I want to go on the swings.
28:30You want to go on the swings?
28:31On that one.
28:32You want to go on that one?
28:33Yeah.
28:34Taking Sophia to the park, I do worry that it might be a little too much for me.
28:39I know I'm putting myself at risk.
28:42Hey, baby.
28:46Yeah?
28:47I've got to go sit down for a little bit, okay?
28:48Okay.
28:49All right.
29:02All she wants me to do is push her on the swing, but I have to go sit down and watch her play by herself.
29:09As a father, it makes me feel like a failure.
29:11Seeing her is definitely a motivation to do what I need to do, so I can see more of her.
29:19Oh, I miss you, baby.
29:20I miss you, too.
29:21So, today I'm doing some baby spinach.
29:33I use hot sauce for the seasoning, a little bit of apple cider vinegar.
29:37Let that reduce down pretty good.
29:39When this whole process started, I honestly took for granted how easy it was going to be to just hit the off switch and do all the right things.
29:52Baked chicken thighs.
29:56But now that Sophia's back, I'm focused because I need to be healthier to be there for her.
30:03Even an occasional setback isn't going to stop me from reaching this goal.
30:06I'm playing the long game, and I'm going to come out on top.
30:21What's going on, good peoples?
30:25This shirt is bigger on me.
30:28These pants are lower down on me.
30:31But this is a problem.
30:37It's getting bad.
30:38It's getting bad.
30:40I'm going to Atlanta in a couple days, and I've been working my ass off.
30:45Literally, my ass, my stomach, all that stuff.
30:48But my leg has continued to get bigger.
30:51I don't understand it.
30:52I don't know why it's happening.
30:54Have I done enough to lose enough weight for the surgery?
30:58I don't know what the scale is going to say.
30:59It's fucking, man.
31:17Hey, Brian.
31:17Hey, hey, Doc.
31:18Good to see you.
31:19Nice to see you, too.
31:21If you want to take your mask off, you're welcome to.
31:23It's up to you.
31:24Whatever you feel comfortable.
31:24Appreciate it.
31:26Well, I haven't seen you in a while.
31:27How have things been going?
31:28Up and down.
31:29I have more energy, I'm walking without my cane,
31:32I'm doing steps instead of elevators,
31:35but my leg is getting bigger.
31:36Yeah, I can see.
31:37So I have no idea what my weight is.
31:38Let's see where we are, thanks.
31:39All right.
31:41So last time I saw Brian, he was 597 pounds.
31:44I asked him to lose 50 pounds to get him
31:46below 550 at this appointment.
31:48It can be difficult for somebody with severe lymphedema
31:51like Brian has.
31:52I just hope he's successful today.
32:00560 pounds.
32:02Not quite.
32:05Close.
32:09So you're about 10 pounds off.
32:11Yeah.
32:12But I'm staring here at your leg.
32:14I guarantee you've got at least 10 more pounds of water
32:17weight in that leg and you can probably feel that.
32:19So what does that mean?
32:21It means you made weight.
32:22Does that mean to get to get the surgery?
32:29It means we're going to do the surgery.
32:35You've earned it.
32:38You did it, Bam.
32:39Congratulations.
32:40A lot of people, when they see me and they see my weight,
32:43no one takes my leg into account.
32:45So for Dr. Proctor to look at it and recognize it and see it,
32:48one, I can tell that he really cares.
32:50And two, I can't put in the words how grateful I am.
32:54Absolutely.
32:55All right.
32:56We've got a little work to do.
32:57It's game on now.
32:58Yeah.
32:59I never thought we would be here.
33:00And now that it's happening, it's still processing.
33:03All right, man.
33:04I'm excited for you.
33:05Thanks.
33:06Congratulations.
33:07Really appreciate it.
33:08We'll get you set up for surgery.
33:09All right.
33:10Take care.
33:11It's surgery day.
33:30I've already made the mental change and now I'm ready for the physical change to show.
33:36And it's just, it's a day that I thought would never get here.
33:43But there's going to be somebody new at the end of this.
33:45Somebody I haven't met before.
33:46And that's what I'm eager to do.
33:51I'm definitely afraid of not waking up.
33:57I'm definitely afraid of, you know, Sophia getting a call that I didn't wake up and her
34:03having to process that early.
34:06But that's out of my hands.
34:26Good morning.
34:27Good morning.
34:28How are you feeling?
34:30A little weak.
34:31The good news is you just need to take a nap.
34:33All right.
34:34We'll take care of everything else.
34:36Okay.
34:37You just take a nice dream about whatever you want to do when that weight comes off.
34:41I want to take my daughter two minutes apart.
34:43Bite everything with her?
34:44No.
34:45I just want to take her then.
34:46I'm still not getting on rides.
34:48I just want to take her.
34:49All right, ma'am.
34:50I want to get everything ready in there.
34:52We'll take great care of you.
34:53I'll see you back in a minute.
34:54Okay?
34:56All right.
34:57Today we're operating on Brian.
35:02Brian's had a long road to get to surgery.
35:04Any issues?
35:05Let me know.
35:06The fact that Brian has this really difficult lymphedema on his lower extremity makes his
35:11overall case very, very hard.
35:13All right.
35:14Let's dock.
35:15Even the spotted scratch in that leg can lead to a fatal infection.
35:20So we have to be concerned about that at all times.
35:23Okay.
35:24Will you hand me a suture?
35:25We're going to remove about 75% of the stomach.
35:28And then we're going to bypass about half the length of his small bowel.
35:32That will really turbo boost his weight loss.
35:34Put everything up air tight.
35:36We don't see any leaks at this point.
35:38Do this.
35:39All right, guys.
35:40We're all done.
35:41All right.
35:42You hold my hand.
35:43Okay.
35:44Hold it tight now.
35:45I don't want to see him jumping.
35:47What do we got?
35:48Oh, we have this jacket.
35:49All right, you hold my hand.
35:51OK.
35:51Hold it tight, now.
35:53I don't want to see you jumping.
36:15What do we got?
36:16We have this jacket.
36:17OK.
36:18And this shirt.
36:19It's really nice.
36:20All right.
36:21It's been almost a year since surgery,
36:22and losing all this weight has been a lot of hard work.
36:25Oh, I like that.
36:26We're turning around.
36:27Today, Sophia and I are going to meet my family and friends
36:30at the Lincoln Memorial.
36:32The last time I was out there, it was a little bit of a struggle.
36:35And today, I'm feeling much better, much more confident.
36:38And now I want to show off the new me.
36:41And this is my favorite.
36:42That's your favorite?
36:43Yeah.
36:44You see that?
36:47I think this is the one.
36:49Thank you, baby.
36:49You're welcome.
36:51In the last few years, going places was a nightmare.
36:58My leg would swell up, and I was in a lot of pain.
37:02I've missed a lot of birthday parties, graduations, social events
37:06with my friends because of my weight.
37:08It's over, yeah.
37:09You missed my whole show, man.
37:10I went all last.
37:11Killed it, by the way.
37:12Could you take a picture?
37:13Absolutely not.
37:14No.
37:15I missed so much of Sophia's life.
37:18Hey, baby.
37:19Yeah?
37:20I got to sit down for a little bit, OK?
37:23Now I'm lighter.
37:25I have way more energy.
37:27It's a much better experience with my daughter.
37:31Come on, my love.
37:31How you all doing?
37:35Good, good.
37:36How you doing?
37:37Good to see you.
37:37Good to see you.
37:38Good to see you.
37:39We're here at the Lincoln Memorial today
37:42to celebrate Brian's weight loss.
37:44His friends are here.
37:46So y'all know how much weight he's lost?
37:48I am so proud of him.
37:49I can't wait to see.
37:49I can't wait to see.
37:50Yeah?
37:51I've been with Brian since the beginning
37:53of this weight loss journey.
37:55And I remember going down to Atlanta with him.
37:57And we met with Dr. Procte.
37:59But I've been living in North Carolina.
38:02So I really don't know what Brian has been up to.
38:04I don't know what he looks like.
38:05I don't know if he's actually sticking with his diet.
38:07So I'm incredibly excited to see him.
38:12You ready, baby?
38:13Yeah.
38:14All right.
38:15Are you ready to see your friends, Daddy?
38:18I am, baby.
38:18I'm very excited, ready to see my friends.
38:22Sophia was really, really motivation for him.
38:25I think that's accountability for him, too.
38:27Yeah.
38:27You know, you can't fake out your kids.
38:28No, no.
38:29He was supposed to go to my comedy show.
38:30He didn't even show up, so.
38:34I'm a little anxious, but I am excited for everybody
38:37to see the new me.
38:39Oh!
38:40Oh!
38:40Oh!
38:41Oh!
38:41Oh!
38:42Oh!
38:48What's going on, good people?
38:52You tell me.
38:53Look, look.
38:54I'm still getting used to it also.
38:55Look at that jawline.
38:56What's happening?
38:57When I started this journey, I was 597 pounds.
38:58I've lost 231 pounds so far.
38:59I never thought I would get under 450.
39:00Every pound after that is a gift.
39:01Now I can go around and do things and not be immediately tired.
39:04It's made every aspect of my life better.
39:07You got cheekbones?
39:08I don't even recognize the dude.
39:09I mean, he's...
39:10I mean, I got to lose some weight.
39:11Honestly, it's surreal how much weight he lost.
39:14Like, if I saw him in a crowd, I probably wouldn't have been able to pick him out.
39:17Oh!
39:18Oh!
39:19Oh!
39:20Oh!
39:21Oh!
39:22Oh!
39:23Oh!
39:24Oh!
39:25Oh!
39:26Oh!
39:27Oh!
39:28Oh!
39:29Oh!
39:30Oh!
39:31Oh!
39:32Oh!
39:33Oh!
39:34Oh, my gosh!
39:35He looks so amazing!
39:36How's it been with Sophia?
39:37We do a lot more stuff.
39:38Like, instead of driving to the store, we walk to the store.
39:39Oh, no, seriously.
39:40I move around a little bit more.
39:41So it is the way it is, you know?
39:42I like that now we could just hang out and we don't have to stay in the house anymore.
39:57We could just go out, have fun.
39:59Are you going to get up in the steps?
40:00What steps?
40:01You know the steps?
40:02Let's go up the steps.
40:05Let's go up the steps.
40:06Come on.
40:07You got it, Daddy.
40:09Oof.
40:10The last time I climbed these stairs, I almost didn't make it.
40:14So I'm a little nervous, but these stairs.
40:18I think I can tackle them this time a little easier.
40:21All right.
40:22Let's go, people.
40:23You got this.
40:24Yeah, let's do it.
40:25At this point, I should be tired, but I'm not.
40:27And I have energy that I didn't think I was going to have.
40:30And the higher I go up, the more I don't feel tired.
40:33It's a weird feeling.
40:34Never felt it before.
40:35Got it, Daddy.
40:36Just do that one.
40:37Just one more.
40:38Hot damn email.
40:39He looks amazing.
40:40He's walking faster.
40:41He looks lighter on his feet.
40:42Now we can actually include him going on trips.
40:43It's a huge deal.
40:44Let's go!
40:45I lost 231 pounds!
40:46Let's get it!
40:47Proud isn't a word I can use.
40:48This is one of the best moments of my life.
41:11I was so proud of him that I almost crossed the line.
41:14I was so proud of him that I almost started crying.
41:18Love you so much.
41:19Me too.
41:20You know that, right?
41:20Yeah.
41:21I feel like I can finally be the dad I always wanted to be.
