00:00A school district in Vermont is sparking outrage after it raised the flag of Somalia on its campus.
00:05Somalis make up about 9% of the student population in the Winooski School District,
00:10which is right outside of Burlington. The district decided to raise the flag on Monday to honor
00:14the, quote, Somali youth and families in Winooski and Vermont. They posted the flag raising on their
00:20Facebook page and furor ensued, perhaps because of the Minnesota fraud scheme that involves many
00:26Somalis being in the news lately, particularly on this podcast. So many were angered by this move,
00:33so many that the school district had to shut down its website and disconnect its phones.
00:38The district clarified the incident in a statement, noting that the American flag was still on the top
00:43mast and that the Vermont and Somali flags were on lower masts, complying with U.S. flag code.
00:49The fallout wasn't pretty. A lot of the people incensed by the incident screamed racial slurs
00:55and threats against the school when their calls were sent to voicemail. And local police were on
01:00site this week, just in case.
