00:00Progressive politicians are crazy for not supporting public charter schools.
00:05I'm a proud Bronx native, proud Bronx charter school parent, and educator.
00:09I was the first in my family to graduate from college.
00:12This was not guaranteed. It was thanks to my mother.
00:15She believed that education was the path out of poverty.
00:18Many of my friends and family didn't make it into college
00:21because they lacked an adult who believed in them and fought for them.
00:25And so that's why when I graduated college and I joined Teach for America,
00:28I came back home.
00:30I started working at a school right up the block from where I grew up.
00:33Every single child in that school building could read.
00:37Every single child.
00:39This was not my experience growing up in school,
00:42and it definitely wasn't the experience in the surrounding school communities.
00:45So defunding or blocking charter schools would condemn generations of kids to failing schools.
00:52And yet progressive politicians who claim to speak for people like me
00:56discriminate against charters.
00:57They say charters steal from public schools.
01:00That makes no sense.
01:01Charter schools are public schools.
01:04And yet students in charter schools receive thousands less in funding than those who attend
01:09the district schools.
01:10New York City has put a cap on charter schools from opening.
01:14Putting a cap on access to excellent education doesn't seem very progressive to me.
01:19Not when these are the schools teaching kids how to read and write, which are the pathways
01:23to college.
01:24If you say you care about poor kids, then you need to support the schools that are helping
01:29them succeed.
