Young Mazino chats with THR at 'The Last of Us' red carpet premiere and describes his familiarity with the game before being cast as "Jesse" in season two. Plus, he talks about meeting Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey for the first time and describes how he decompressed while working on season two.

00:00What was your relationship with the games beforehand?

00:03I had watched the cinematic compilation of all the cutscenes in one go years ago.

00:10I just had a habit of doing that for games I didn't play.

00:15Star Wars has great cinematic cutscenes in Force Unleashed and whatnot.

00:20And then I watched the first season. I was blown away.

00:24I didn't realize there was a character for me to play in the second season or the second game.

00:29And then when the meeting came up to meet with Craig and Neil, I bought a used PS4 from GameStop.

00:37And I played through the game until a very particular moment.

00:43And then I stopped playing the game.

00:45Because there was no... yeah.

00:48And what was that first day on set like for you?

00:53You know, I wasn't feeling too nervous until I stepped into the set and it's a massive full-scale Jackson community.

01:03The gates... when I saw the gates I started to get a little rush of adrenaline.

01:07Because they're so... the gates are huge. They aren't... they aren't CGI.

01:11They're like actual wooden beams stapled together, however you make them.

01:17Um... yeah.

01:19It felt like Helm's Deep. It felt like The Two Towers.

01:22Um... yeah, I was in awe of the set.

01:25And... um... the sheer scale of it.

01:29Because I've... yeah, that was the first time experience.

01:32And a lot of new cast members this season.

01:34How did Pedro and Bella kind of welcome you all into the group?

01:37Pedro gave a warm, tender hug.

01:41And at the time his shoulder was all messed up.

01:43So... it was... um... had to be gentle.

01:46But it was warm.

01:48And Bella and I... uh... went on a tiny seaplane.

01:52And experienced like the... the craziest turbulence for about 30 minutes.

01:57And I remember thinking, I'm like, this would be a crazy way for me to... for me to die.

02:01Like... prepping for the show with Bella.

02:04Uh... uh... yeah.

02:06That would have been quite a story.

02:08And I mean, this show... this show can be very dark and grueling.

02:12How did you kind of get in and out of that mindset?

02:15I think Pedro just...

02:16Yeah, I... I...

02:40Um... people like Bella, Gabriel, Isabella...

02:43Um... so much levity.

02:46So much... so much warmth and brightness.
