00:00...on behalf of her mother, to read the words her mother wait for the occasion today.
00:11Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses,
00:15Distinguished Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee,
00:20Citizens of the World,
00:22My Dear Venezuelans,
00:25First, I want to express our infinite gratitude
00:28from my family,
00:30from an entire country,
00:33to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
00:36Thanks to you, the struggle of an entire people
00:40for truth, for freedom,
00:43for democracy, and peace
00:45is today recognized around the world.
00:49I am here on behalf of my mother,
00:52Maria Corina Machado,
00:54who has united millions of Venezuelans
00:57in an extraordinary effort
00:59that you, our hosts,
01:02have honored with the Nobel Peace Prize.
01:06But although she has not been able to be here
01:09and take part in this ceremony,
01:11I must say that my mother never breaks a promise.
01:16And that is why, with all the joy in my heart,
01:20I can tell you that in just a few hours,
01:23we will be able to embrace her here in Oslo
01:27after 16 months living in heaven.
01:45And as I wait that moment to hug her,
01:48to kiss her, to embrace her,
01:50after two years,
01:51I think of the other daughters and sons
01:56who do not get to see their mothers today.
02:00This is what drives her,
02:03what drives all of us.
02:04She wants to live in a free Venezuela,
02:08and she will never give up on that purpose.
02:12That is why we all know,
02:15and I know,
02:17that she will be back in Venezuela very soon.
02:21In the meantime,
02:24at this moment,
02:25I face the difficult task
02:28of giving voice to her words.
02:32The speech she prepared for this occasion.
02:36This is her speech.
02:40I have come here to tell you a story.
02:44The story of a people
02:47and their long march toward freedom.
02:51This march brings me here today
02:53as one voice amongst millions of Venezuelans
02:57who rose once again
03:00to reclaim the destiny
03:02that was always theirs.
03:05Venezuela was born of audacity,
03:08shaped by peoples and cultures intertwined.
03:11From Spain,
03:13we inherited a language,
03:14a culture,
03:15and a faith
03:16that merged with ancestral indigenous
03:19and African roots.
03:21In 1811,
03:22we wrote the first constitution
03:25in the Spanish-speaking world.
03:27one of the earliest Republican constitutions
03:30on earth,
03:32affirming the radical idea
03:33that every human being
03:36carries a sovereign dignity.
03:39This constitution
03:41enshrined citizenship,
03:43individual rights,
03:45religious liberty,
03:46and separation of powers.
03:49Our ancestors carried liberty on their backs.
03:52They crossed an entire continent
03:54from the banks of the Orinoco
03:57to the heights of the Potosí
03:59to help give rise to societies
04:02of free and equal citizens
04:04out of the conviction
04:06that freedom is never whole
04:09unless it is shared.
04:11From the beginning,
04:13we believed something simple
04:15and immense,
04:17that all human beings
04:20are born to be free.
04:23That conviction
04:24became our national soul.
04:28In the 20th century,
04:30the earth opened.
04:32In 1922,
04:34the Reventón en la Rosa
04:35erupted for nine days,
04:37a fountain of oil
04:39and possibility.
04:42In peace,
04:43we turned that sudden wealth
04:45into an engine
04:46for knowledge and imagination.
04:48Through the ingenuity
04:50of our scientists,
04:51we eradicated disease.
04:53We built universities
04:54of global prestige,
04:56museums and concert halls,
04:58sent thousands of Venezuelans
05:00abroad through scholarships,
05:03trusting that free minds
05:04would return as transformation.
05:07Our cities glowed
05:09with the kinetic art
05:10of Cruz Diez and Soto.
05:13We forged steel,
05:15aluminium and hydropower,
05:17proof that Venezuela
05:18could build anything
05:19it dared to envision.
05:22But Venezuela also became
05:24a refuge.
05:25We opened our arms
05:27to migrants and exiles
05:28from every corner
05:30of the world.
05:31Spaniards fleeing civil war,
05:33Italians and Portuguese
05:35escaping poverty
05:36and dictatorship,
05:38Jews after the Holocaust,
05:39Chileans, Argentinians
05:41and Uruguayans
05:42escaping military regimes,
05:45Cubans escaping communism,
05:47and families from Colombia,
05:49Lebanon and Syria
05:50seeking peace.
05:52We gave them homes,
05:54schools and safety,
05:56and they became Venezuelans.
06:00This is Venezuela.
06:02We built a democracy
06:04that became the most stable
06:06in Latin America
06:07and freedom unfolded
06:09as a creative force.
06:11But even the strongest democracy
06:13weakens
06:14when its citizens forget
06:16that freedom
06:16is not something we wait for,
06:19but something we become.
06:22It is a deliberate personal choice
06:24and the sum of those choices
06:26forms the civic ethos
06:28that must be renewed
06:29every day.
06:32The concentration of oil revenues
06:34in the state
06:35created perverse incentives.
06:38It gave the government
06:38immense power over society,
06:41which turned into privilege
06:42and corruption.
06:45My generation was born
06:47in a vibrant democracy,
06:49and we took it for granted.
06:51We assumed freedom
06:52was as permanent
06:54as the air we breathed.
06:55We cherished our rights,
06:58but we forgot our duties.
07:02I was raised by a father
07:04whose life's work,
07:06building, creating, serving,
07:09taught me that loving a country
07:11meant assuming responsibility
07:13for its future.
07:15By the time we recognized
07:18how fragile our institutions
07:20had become,
07:21a man who had once
07:22led a military coup
07:24to overthrow democracy,
07:26was elected president.
07:28Many thought charisma
07:29could substitute
07:30the rule of law.
07:32From 1991 onward,
07:35the regime
07:35dismantled our democracy,
07:38violating the Constitution,
07:40falsifying our history,
07:42corrupting the military,
07:43purging independent judges,
07:46censoring the press,
07:47manipulating elections,
07:49persecuting dissent,
07:50and ravaging our extraordinary
07:52biodiversity.
07:55Oil wealth
07:55was not used to uplift,
07:58but to bind.
08:00Washing machines
08:01and refrigerators
08:02were handed out
08:03on national television
08:04to families
08:05living on dirt floors,
08:07not as progress,
08:09but as spectacle.
08:11Apartments meant
08:12for social housing
08:13and housing
08:14were handed
08:15to a select few
08:16with a condition
08:18for unquestionable obedience.
08:23And then came the ruin,
08:25obscene corruption,
08:27historic looting.
08:29During the regime's rule,
08:31Venezuela received
08:32more oil revenue
08:34than in the previous century
08:36combined.
08:38And it was all stolen.
08:40Oil money became a tool
08:41to purchase loyalty abroad
08:43while at home,
08:45criminal and international
08:46terrorist groups
08:47fused themselves
08:48to the state.
08:50The economy
08:51collapsed
08:52by more than 80%.
08:54Poverty
08:56surpassed 86%.
08:58Today,
09:009 million Venezuelans
09:02have been forced
09:03to flee.
09:05These are not statistics.
09:07They're open wounds.
09:09Meanwhile,
09:11something deeper
09:12and more corrosive
09:14took place.
09:15It was a deliberate method
09:17to divide society
09:19by ideology,
09:21by race,
09:23by origin,
09:24by ways of life,
09:26pushing Venezuelans
09:27to distrust one another,
09:29to silence one another,
09:31to see enemies
09:33in one another.
09:35They smothered us.
09:36They took us prisoners.
09:38They killed us.
09:40And they forced us
09:41into exile.
09:43It had been almost
09:45three decades
09:46of fighting
09:47against a brutal
09:48dictatorship.
09:50And we had tried
09:51everything.
09:53Dialogues betrayed.
09:55Protests of millions
09:56crushed.
09:58Elections perverted.
10:00Hope collapsed entirely.
10:02And believing
10:03any kind of future
10:04became impossible.
10:07The idea of change
10:08seemed either naive
10:10or crazy.
10:12It seemed impossible.
10:15Yet from the very
10:16depths of that despair,
10:18a step that seemed modest,
10:21almost procedural,
10:23changed the course
10:24of our history.
10:26We decided
10:27against all odds
10:28to run a primary election.
10:30And unlike
10:31any act
10:33of rebellion,
10:34we chose
10:35to trust people,
10:37to rediscover
10:38one another.
10:39We traveled
10:40by road
10:40and by dirt path
10:41in a country
10:42with gasoline
10:43shortages,
10:45daily blackouts,
10:46and collapsing
10:47communications.
10:48Forbidding
10:49from advertising,
10:50without money
10:51or media
10:52willing to speak
10:53our names,
10:54we crossed it
10:55only with our
10:56conviction.
10:57word of mouth
10:59was our network
11:01of hope.
11:02And it spread
11:03faster than
11:04any campaign
11:05because our desire
11:07for freedom
11:08was very much
11:10alive within us
11:11and it had
11:12never died.
11:14The forced migration
11:15that was meant
11:17to fracture us
11:18instead united us
11:20around one
11:21sacred purpose
11:22to reunite
11:25our families
11:26in our land.
11:28Grandparents
11:29confided in me
11:30their greatest fear,
11:32dying before
11:33meeting their
11:34grandchildren abroad.
11:35Little girls
11:36with voices
11:37too small
11:38for such sorrow
11:39begged me
11:40to bring back
11:40their mothers
11:41and siblings
11:42scattered across
11:43the continent.
11:45Our pain
11:46fused
11:47into one
11:48heartbeat.
11:50Bring our
11:51children
11:51home
11:52now.
11:53In May
11:562023
11:56during a rally
11:57in the town
11:58of Nirwa
11:59a teacher
12:00named Carmen
12:01came up to me.
12:03She told me
12:04she had just
12:05run into
12:05her jefa
12:06de calle.
12:08A jefa
12:08de calle
12:08is a regime
12:09agent assigned
12:10to Carmen's
12:12block
12:12who decides
12:13house
12:14by house
12:15who receives
12:16a monthly
12:16food bag
12:17and who
12:18is punished
12:19with hunger.
12:20Shocked to see
12:22this woman
12:22there
12:23in that rally.
12:23Carmen
12:24asked her
12:25why are you
12:26here?
12:28And the jefa
12:29de calle
12:30replied
12:30my only son
12:32who fled
12:33to Peru
12:33asked me
12:35to be here
12:35today.
12:37He told me
12:38that if
12:38Maria Corina
12:39wins
12:40he will
12:41return home.
12:43Tell me
12:44what I have
12:44to do.
12:45I will do
12:45anything.
12:47That day
12:48love
12:49defeated
12:50fear.
12:52Two weeks
12:53later
12:53we reached
12:54Delicias
12:54a tiny
12:56village
12:56swallowed
12:58by Colombian
12:58guerrillas
12:59and drug
13:00traffickers
13:00where not
13:02even a chicken
13:03can be sold
13:03without their
13:04permission.
13:06No candidate
13:07had gone
13:08there since
13:081978
13:09and as
13:11the team
13:12climbed
13:12the mountain
13:13I saw
13:15Venezuelan
13:16flags waving
13:17from every
13:18humble
13:19home.
13:21I naively
13:22asked
13:22as if
13:25it was
13:25a national
13:26holiday
13:26that merited
13:27all the
13:28flags
13:28and someone
13:29whispered
13:30no
13:31here the
13:32flags are
13:32hidden
13:33bringing it
13:34out is
13:35dangerous
13:35today
13:37people race
13:39them to
13:39thank you
13:40for daring
13:40to come
13:41you will
13:43leave
13:44but we
13:44will remain
13:45identified
13:45that day
13:47entire
13:48families
13:48stood up
13:49to the
13:50armed
13:50groups
13:51that ruled
13:51their lives
13:52and when
13:53we sang
13:54the national
13:54anthem
13:55together
13:56sovereignty
13:57returned
13:58in a single
13:59fragile
14:00defiant
14:01chorus
14:01that day
14:03courage
14:05defeated
14:06oppression
14:06our gatherings
14:09became intimate
14:10encounters
14:10of thousands
14:11we embraced
14:13we cried
14:14we prayed
14:15we understood
14:17our struggle
14:18was much
14:19more than
14:20electoral
14:20it was an
14:22ethical struggle
14:23for truth
14:23an existential
14:25struggle
14:26for life
14:27and a
14:28spiritual
14:29struggle
14:29for good
14:30with less
14:32than a year
14:33before the
14:34presidential
14:34election
14:34we had to
14:35unite
14:36every
14:36democratic
14:37force
14:38and restore
14:39trust
14:39in the
14:40votes
14:40the primaries
14:42became that
14:43moment
14:44a self
14:45organized
14:45civic
14:46effort
14:47that built
14:47a nationwide
14:48citizen
14:49network
14:50unlike
14:50anything
14:51Venezuela
14:51had ever
14:52seen
14:52and on
14:54October
14:5422nd
14:55of 2023
14:56against
14:57all odds
14:58Venezuela
15:00awoke
15:01the diaspora
15:02which was a
15:03third of our
15:04nation
15:04reclaimed
15:06its right
15:06to vote
15:07the son
15:08who had
15:09left
15:09cast
15:10his ballot
15:11alongside
15:12the mother
15:13who stayed
15:14lines stretched
15:15for blocks
15:16turnout
15:17was so
15:18overwhelming
15:18that ballots
15:19actually ran
15:21out
15:21we trusted
15:23the people
15:24and they
15:25trusted us
15:26back
15:27what we've
15:29got
15:29what began
15:30as a mechanism
15:31to legitimize
15:33leadership
15:33became the
15:34rebirth
15:35of a nation's
15:36confidence
15:37in itself
15:38that day
15:40I received
15:41a mandate
15:42a responsibility
15:43that transcended
15:45any individual
15:46ambition
15:47I felt humbled
15:49and profoundly
15:50aware
15:51the weight
15:53with which
15:53I had been
15:54entrusted
15:54threatened
15:56by that
15:57truth
15:57though
15:58the regime
15:59prohibited
16:00me
16:00from running
16:01for president
16:02it was a
16:05harsh blow
16:06but mandates
16:08belong
16:08to the people
16:09we set out
16:12to find
16:12another candidate
16:13who could
16:14take my
16:14place
16:15Elmundo
16:17González
16:17Urrutia
16:18stepped forward
16:19a calm
16:20brave
16:21former
16:22diplomat
16:23the regime
16:24believed
16:24he posed
16:25no threat
16:26but they
16:28underestimated
16:29the resolve
16:30of millions
16:30of citizens
16:32a plural
16:33vibrant
16:34society
16:34that in all
16:36its diversity
16:37found unity
16:38in a common
16:39purpose
16:39communities
16:41political parties
16:43unions
16:44students
16:44and civil
16:45society
16:46stood together
16:47and worked
16:48as one
16:49so that
16:50the voice
16:50of a nation
16:51could be heard
16:53we were three
16:55months
16:56from election
16:57day
16:58and almost
16:59no one
16:59knew his name
17:00but votes
17:02were not enough
17:03we had to
17:04defend them
17:05for over a year
17:07we had been
17:08building the
17:08infrastructure
17:09to do so
17:10600,000
17:13volunteers

17:29fruit trucks
17:30to the furthest

17:33technology
17:35became a tool
17:37for freedom

20:50beaten
20:51and suffocated
20:53until
20:54they repeated
20:55the lie
20:56the regime
20:56needed
20:57falsely
20:58incriminating
20:59themselves
20:59of being
21:00paid
21:01by me
21:01to

21:03women
21:05and girls
21:06in prison
21:06are right
21:07now
21:08being forced
21:09into sexual
21:10slavery

21:13in exchange
21:14for a

21:16a meal
21:17or the
21:18chance
21:18to take
21:19a bath
21:19and yet
21:22the
21:23Venezuelan
21:24people
21:24did not
21:25surrender
21:26during the
21:28past 16
21:29months
21:30in clandestinity
21:31we have
21:32built new
21:32networks
21:33of civic
21:34pressure
21:34and disciplined
21:35disobedience
21:37preparing for
21:38Venezuela's
21:39orderly
21:39transition
21:40to democracy
21:41that is how
21:43we reach
21:44this day
21:45a day
21:46carrying
21:46the echo
21:47of millions
21:48who stand
21:49at the
21:50threshold
21:50of freedom
21:51this prize
21:54carries
21:55profound
21:56meaning
21:56it reminds
21:58the world
21:59that democracy
22:00is essential
22:02to peace
22:03and more
22:05than anything
22:06what we
22:08Venezuelans
22:08can offer
22:09the world
22:10is the lesson
22:11forged
22:11through this
22:12long
22:13and difficult
22:14journey
22:14that to have
22:16democracy
22:17we must be
22:19willing
22:19to fight
22:20for freedom
22:21and freedom
22:23is a choice
22:24that must be
22:25renewed
22:25every day
22:27measured by
22:28our willingness
22:29and our
22:30courage
22:31to defend it
22:32for this
22:34reason
22:34the cause
22:36of Venezuela
22:36transcends
22:38our borders
22:38a people
22:39who choose
22:41freedom
22:41to contribute
22:43not only
22:44to themselves
22:45but to
22:46humanity
22:47we attain
22:49freedom
22:50only when we
22:51refuse to turn
22:53our backs
22:53on ourselves
22:54when we
22:55confront
22:56the truth
22:57directly
22:58no matter
22:59how painful
23:00when we
23:01love
23:02for what
23:03truly matters
23:04in life
23:05gives us
23:06the strength
23:07to persevere
23:09and to prevail
23:10only through
23:13that inner
23:13alignment
23:14that vital
23:15integrity
23:16do we rise
23:18to meet
23:19our destiny
23:20only then
23:22do we become
23:23who we truly
23:23are
23:24able to live
23:26a life
23:26worthy
23:27of being
23:28lived
23:29along this
23:32march
23:32to freedom
23:33we gain
23:34profound
23:35certainties
23:36of the soul
23:36truths
23:38that have
23:38given our
23:39lives
23:39a deeper
23:40meaning
23:40and prepared
23:41us to build
23:42a great
23:43future
23:44in peace
23:44therefore
23:46peace
23:48is ultimately
23:49an act
23:50of love
23:50this love
23:53has already
23:54set our
23:54future
23:54in motion
23:55Venezuela
23:57will breathe
23:59again
23:59we will
24:00open prison
24:02doors
24:02and watch
24:03thousands
24:03who were
24:04unjustly
24:04detained
24:05step into
24:07the warm
24:07sun
24:07embraced
24:09at last
24:09by those
24:10who never
24:10stopped
24:11fighting
24:12for them
24:12we will
24:13see
24:14grandmothers
24:15settle
24:15children
24:16on their
24:16laps
24:17to tell
24:17them
24:17stories
24:18not of
24:19distant
24:19forefathers
24:20but of
24:21their own
24:21parents
24:22courage
24:23we will
24:24see our
24:24students
24:25debate
24:25ideas
24:26passionately
24:27and without
24:27fear
24:28their voices
24:29rising
24:30freely
24:30at last
24:31we will
24:32hug
24:32again
24:33fall
24:34in love
24:35again
24:35hear
24:36our streets
24:37fill
24:37with laughter
24:38and music
24:38again
24:39and all
24:40the simple
24:41joys
24:41in the
24:42world
24:42that we
24:44have taken
24:44for granted
24:45will be

24:58it will
24:59witness
25:00one of
25:00the most
25:01moving
25:01sights
25:02of our
25:03time
25:03our loved
