00:00Welcome back to Fact Space. Today, we're looking at something we all live through but rarely think about.
00:06The seven days of the week. Why are there seven? Why are they named that way?
00:11Let's find out. Let's start with the day everyone loves to hate.
00:15Monday. The name comes from Old English Monang, which literally translates to Moon's Day historically.
00:22Many cultures considered Monday the second day of the week, reserving Sunday as the first.
00:27But here's a weird psychological fact. Heart attacks are most likely to happen on a Monday.
00:34Studies have shown roughly 20% spike in heart attacks on Mondays compared to other days,
00:40likely due to the stress of returning to work and the disruption of sleep cycles over the weekend.
00:46Jump to the middle of the week. Thursday is named after Thor, the Norse god of thunder.
00:51In Old English, it was himrestig literally Thor's day, so every Thursday, you are technically honoring the hammer-wielding Avenger.
01:00And speaking of names, did you know the seven-day week was standardized by the Babylonians?
01:05They chose seven days because they observed seven celestial bodies moving against the fixed stars,
01:12the sun, the moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn.
01:16Finally, let's look at Sunday. Obviously named Sun's Day, it has a curious legal history.
01:23In AD 321, Roman Emperor Constantine issued a decree making Sunday a day of rest for all judges, city people, and craftsmen.
01:33It was arguably the first official weekend in history.
01:36Also, a fun statistical quirk, you are statistically most likely to be born on a Tuesday, but least likely to be born on a weekend,
01:45as scheduled C-sections and inductions are rarely booked for Saturdays or Sundays.
01:50From Norse gods to Roman emperors, your calendar is packed with history.
