Melanie Wightman has always loved fashion — even as a kid, her days began with choosing a colorful outfit and ended with playing outside with friends before dinner and bedtime. But one afternoon, when she was 11, that routine was interrupted when she came home and noticed a small bump on her right temple. She showed her mom, who was immediately puzzled.

00:00There was one day I came in and I noticed there was a bump on my right temple and I remember

00:08going to my mom and showing her and I remember she was very confused. She was like, did you get

00:13hit by like a ball? Like, were you playing soccer with your friends or something? That was the first

00:18sign something was happening.

00:30Thankfully, there was a fellow doctor in that room who afterwards came to us and was like,

00:37hey, like if it gives you comfort, I can do a biopsy.

00:50That was probably one of the hardest days throughout my cancer journey, hearing that.

01:00Fashion has always been something. I've loved just wearing like a big bow or something sparkly,

01:18like always just brought some joy and happiness.

01:30The platform has just like given me a space to just share. I think it's in my bio even just

01:36share about all the things I love, just stuff that brings me joy and that I hope brings other

01:42people joy.

01:43I remember taking it and being like, we can make something out of this. And since I had sewing

01:53experience, I was like, I want to make my own bandanas that are special to me. That's where I

01:59like came up with Mel's ribbon. Wearing this, it brings me just a lot of comfort and love and

02:07confidence and strength in my story.

02:09I hope through my platform, I'm able to spread a lot of things. My main thing is just to remind

02:21us through my cancer story that we're all a little different and that's what makes us beautiful.
