I'm here in Lisbon, a city known for its iconic trams, custard tarts and historic districts.

It's a place of refined culture, colorful walkways and classic monuments.

It's such a beautiful city and I'm so excited to get to explore more.

I'm starting my journey in the center of Lisbon.

I've arranged to meet Anna Paula, a local tour guide.

Lisbon is very, very old.

We are next to our oldest cathedral, Sede Lisboa, the Bishop House.

And it's the oldest church in Lisbon.

So it suffered several earthquakes.

The biggest one of 1755 and destroyed the bell tower.

This cathedral and other parts of the city have been rebuilt many times.

But its core still shows its ancient origins.

Tradition plays a big part in daily life here.

And Anna brings me to one of the places that means the most to her.

A religious statue.

So St. Anthony, can you see him in the statue and in the picture?

He's born here in Lisbon.

We pray to him to get us a husband or a wife.

One of the most famous customs here is to throw a coin at the monument.

It's said to bring good luck in love.

With love in the air, Anna and I set off to higher grounds to get a better view of the city.

This is a famous viewpoint popular with locals and visitors.

So, here we have lots of monuments.

Let me point at some of them.

That big church over there is the place where St. Anthony became priest.

We can also see more churches.

The big dump over there is the Pentanian.

Lisbon is full of churches and spires.

But it has an Islamic history too.

Next, we head towards the city's Alfama district, where traces of that past can still be seen.

Its narrow lanes, stairways and courtyards date back to the years just after the Moorish period came to an end.

We are in the center of Alfama.

Alfama is a neighborhood outside of the walls of the city, where the Moorish people stay after the king conquered the city.

And it came from the word Al-Arama, the place with good waters.

Today, the area is filled with cafes, viewpoints and homes that have been here for generations.

As Anna and I wander through Alfama, you really feel how much history is held within these narrow streets.

Lisbon is a city where history and flavor go hand in hand.

And every district has something unique to offer.

This is Pastéis de Belém, one of the most famous pastry shops in Lisbon.

Ricardo, the supervisor, is giving me a behind-the-scenes look at this historic spot.

This bakery is known as the birthplace of Portugal's original custard tarts.

It began making the classic tarts in 1837, using an ancient recipe.

That formula remains a closely guarded secret.

Only a handful of master bakers know the whole process, and it's all handled behind a locked door.

So this is the door with all the secrets behind.

Yeah, this is the only door that is closed even for me in this enterprise.

Only three persons know the receipt, they know how to do it.

And they are the only ones available to come inside.

These are the original Portuguese custard tarts.

You'll find versions all over the world, but the true Pastéis de Belém are made only here in this bakery.

The pastry chefs here are experts in every step of the process.

I'm getting the chance to try a little pastry making myself, with the help of the bakery's experienced staff.

Once they're shaped, they are then filled using a machine.

The tarts then go straight into the ovens, where they bake at a high heat to get that perfect flaky crust and caramelized top.

I'm heading to a place dedicated to this unique craft.

I'm here at the National Tile Museum to learn more about this iconic art form and discover how it's still inspiring artists today.

To explore this artwork in more depth, museum coordinator Dora Fernandez is showing me around.

This museum showcases a collection of Portuguese tiles dating back to the 15th century.

It tells the story of how this art form has evolved over time.

Many of these tiles show scenes from historical events or religious stories.

Here we have one of the most iconic panels of the museum because it was one of the first productions of tiles.

The museum is housed in the former convent of Madre de Deus.

A 16th century building that adds its own history to the collection.

Alongside Christian artwork, you'll also find tiles with geometric patterns influenced by the city's Islamic past.

This beautifully restored 19th century palace was once owned by a Viscount and it still carries the same sense of elegance today.

You know, this doesn't feel like a hotel. It feels like an integral part of the city.

And it really does take you back to Portugal's incredible history.

Then, in the main dish, we have lobster rice.

Who doesn't love a lobster? I mean, they are pretty special.
