00:05From my base in Qatar, I travel the world to discover incredible places

00:10filled with culture, luxury and adventure.

00:13Along the way, I meet the people, taste the flavors

00:17and experience the moments that make each destination unforgettable.

00:22Today, I'm traveling from Qatar to a coastal city in the Iberian Peninsula.

00:33I'm here in Lisbon, a city known for its iconic trams, custard tarts and historic districts.

00:40It's a place of refined culture, colorful walkways and classic monuments.

00:46Hola and welcome to Lisbon.

00:48In this episode, I'll explore this city's rich culture, food, history and grand architecture.

00:55It's such a beautiful city and I'm so excited to get to explore more.

01:01I'm starting my journey in the center of Lisbon.

01:04I've arranged to meet Anna Paula, a local tour guide.

01:08Lisbon is very, very old.

01:10We are next to our oldest cathedral, Sede Lisboa, the Bishop House.

01:15And it's the oldest church in Lisbon.

01:18So it suffered several earthquakes.

01:20The biggest one of 1755 and destroyed the bell tower.

01:25This cathedral and other parts of the city have been rebuilt many times.

01:29But its core still shows its ancient origins.

01:34Tradition plays a big part in daily life here.

01:37And Anna brings me to one of the places that means the most to her.

01:41A religious statue.

01:43So St. Anthony, can you see him in the statue and in the picture?

01:47He's born here in Lisbon.

01:48We pray to him to get us a husband or a wife.

01:51One of the most famous customs here is to throw a coin at the monument.

01:56It's said to bring good luck in love.

01:59With love in the air, Anna and I set off to higher grounds to get a better view of the city.

02:04This is a famous viewpoint popular with locals and visitors.

02:08So, here we have lots of monuments.

02:11Let me point at some of them.

02:13That big church over there is the place where St. Anthony became priest.

02:19We can also see more churches.

02:21The big dump over there is the Pentanian.

02:24Lisbon is full of churches and spires.

02:27But it has an Islamic history too.

02:29Next, we head towards the city's Alfama district, where traces of that past can still be seen.

02:37Its narrow lanes, stairways and courtyards date back to the years just after the Moorish period came to an end.

02:43We are in the center of Alfama.

02:45Alfama is a neighborhood outside of the walls of the city, where the Moorish people stay after the king conquered the city.

02:53And it came from the word Al-Arama, the place with good waters.

02:58Today, the area is filled with cafes, viewpoints and homes that have been here for generations.

03:04As Anna and I wander through Alfama, you really feel how much history is held within these narrow streets.

03:11Our tour comes to an end, but there's still so much more to discover.

03:18Lisbon is a city where history and flavor go hand in hand.

03:22And every district has something unique to offer.

03:26This is Pastéis de Belém, one of the most famous pastry shops in Lisbon.

03:32Ricardo, the supervisor, is giving me a behind-the-scenes look at this historic spot.

03:37This bakery is known as the birthplace of Portugal's original custard tarts.

03:42It began making the classic tarts in 1837, using an ancient recipe.

03:48That formula remains a closely guarded secret.

03:51Only a handful of master bakers know the whole process, and it's all handled behind a locked door.

03:56So this is the door with all the secrets behind.

04:01Yeah, this is the only door that is closed even for me in this enterprise.

04:04Only three persons know the receipt, they know how to do it.

04:07And they are the only ones available to come inside.

04:10These are the original Portuguese custard tarts.

04:13You'll find versions all over the world, but the true Pastéis de Belém are made only here in this bakery.

04:19The pastry chefs here are experts in every step of the process.

04:26I'm getting the chance to try a little pastry making myself, with the help of the bakery's experienced staff.

04:33And up, this way round, this way round.

04:37Always that way.

04:38Once they're shaped, they are then filled using a machine.

04:42The tarts then go straight into the ovens, where they bake at a high heat to get that perfect flaky crust and caramelized top.

04:51So, really, this line is what you have made more before.

04:55And they are beautiful, you did it so well.

04:57They look beautiful.

04:59It's the layers I love.

05:01They are perfect. You cannot see the difference between yours and the other ones.

05:04They are just perfect.

05:05After seeing how everything comes together, it's finally time to taste these famous pastries.

05:11And they are truly delicious, crispy on the outside and soft and creamy in the middle.

05:18A great way to round off this sweet adventure.

05:23Lisbon is a city full of atmosphere, elegance and creativity.

05:28Many of its walls are covered with artwork and painted tiles.

05:31I'm heading to a place dedicated to this unique craft.

05:36I'm here at the National Tile Museum to learn more about this iconic art form and discover how it's still inspiring artists today.

05:46To explore this artwork in more depth, museum coordinator Dora Fernandez is showing me around.

05:51This museum showcases a collection of Portuguese tiles dating back to the 15th century.

05:58It tells the story of how this art form has evolved over time.

06:03Many of these tiles show scenes from historical events or religious stories.

06:08Here we have one of the most iconic panels of the museum because it was one of the first productions of tiles.

06:19This big panel done and produced in Lisbon.

06:22The museum is housed in the former convent of Madre de Deus.

06:26A 16th century building that adds its own history to the collection.

06:30Alongside Christian artwork, you'll also find tiles with geometric patterns influenced by the city's Islamic past.

06:40The museum showcases tiles of every type, from simple designs to grand panels.

06:47Together they show the richness of Portugal's tile tradition.

06:50So this is the big panorama of Lisbon.

06:55So you can see 14 kilometers of the coast of Lisbon just before the earthquake.

07:01The museum's pieces show how Lisbon's history, culture and art have changed through the centuries.

07:08Today this tradition is encouraged through tile making workshops.

07:13Classes teach simple painting techniques that help bring each tile to life.

07:17I'm finishing my visit to the museum with a private class, guided by tile expert Joanna.

07:24It's a hands-on way to experience the craft behind Lisbon's tiles and to end my time here with something truly personal.

07:35Next up on my journey, I'm checking into the Lapa Palace Hotel.

07:39A stunning historic building surrounded by gardens and old world charm.

07:43This beautifully restored 19th century palace was once owned by a Viscount and it still carries the same sense of elegance today.

07:54One thing that stands out about this former palace is how grand and peaceful it feels.

08:00There's such a sense of heritage here, you can feel it in every detail.

08:04The hotel's rooms are classic in style, with lots of decorative touches.

08:11It's full of character and sophistication, just as you'd expect from a historic palace.

08:17Outside, the terraces look out over the Tagus River, giving you some of the best views in the city.

08:23Downstairs, that same style continues in the hotel's restaurant space.

08:32You know, this doesn't feel like a hotel. It feels like an integral part of the city.

08:38And it really does take you back to Portugal's incredible history.

08:41Next up on my journey, I'm wandering deeper into Lisbon to discover more of what the city has to offer.

08:50I'm heading to Sola dos Prasandos, a family-run spot celebrated for its fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese flavours.

08:59It's considered a local landmark, attracting visitors for over 40 years.

09:04I've been invited for a private masterclass with one of the restaurant's chefs.

09:10Chef, what traditional Portuguese cuisine are we preparing?

09:13We have three dishes.

09:15Okay, we start with the octopus.

09:17We're now fried that's gone with the garlic oil and coriander.

09:21Then, in the main dish, we have lobster rice.

09:25Who doesn't love a lobster? I mean, they are pretty special.

09:28And this is a Portuguese lobster?

09:29Portuguese lobster.

09:30The secret sauce for each dish is made from the leftover vegetables.

09:35A classic approach that ensures nothing goes to waste.

09:39Now it's time for us to get cooking.

09:43I think one of my favourite smells has to be coriander.

09:46It's such a beautiful aroma.

09:49As we build the flavours, I can see just how much care goes into these traditional Portuguese dishes.

09:56I don't think anything gets better than just simple ingredients.

09:58And I think that's what Portuguese cooking is all about.

10:01Simple ingredients that come together.

10:04These dishes are all about layering flavours and letting the ingredients speak for themselves.

10:10Lobster, octopus and mussels are prized ingredients in Portuguese cooking.

10:16And with just a light touch, they become something really special.

10:19After my masterclass, it's time to taste some of the dishes with Carolina Cardoso, part of the family behind this restaurant.

10:28We start with the octopus.

10:30My grandparents, they brought this dish to Lisbon when they opened the restaurant.

10:34The clams is just the normal Portuguese clams.

10:37There's no magic, no nothing.

10:38It's just about really good products from our coast.

10:40Portuguese cuisine, it's all about the ingredients.

10:43Sharing this meal with Carolina helps me understand why this place is so popular.

10:50It's food with history, family and flavour.

10:56As my journey comes to a close, I'm ending my time in Lisbon with a boat trip along the coast.

11:02Carolina, a local tour guide, is taking me out on the water.

11:05It's a lovely way to see the city from another angle.

11:09I think one of my favourite things is all the different colours and then the pop of the trees at the top.

11:15You notice the colours so much and it's the same as what you notice in the tiles as well.

11:19The blues, the whites, the yellows.

11:22The pink.

11:24It's great just sitting back here, relaxing on the ocean, getting to see the different elements and levels of the city.

11:30After a fantastic day on the water, the captain lets me take the wheel as we head back to shore.

11:40For me, Lisbon is a city of layers.

11:43Layers to its history, layers to its streets and layers to its famous pastry.

11:48I've had such a wonderful time here in Lisbon and truly feel part of the Portuguese culture.

11:54But now, on to the next adventure.
