Today, the area is filled with cafes, viewpoints and homes that have been here for generations.
03:04
As Anna and I wander through Alfama, you really feel how much history is held within these
03:10
narrow streets.
03:11
Our tour comes to an end, but there's still so much more to discover.
03:18
Lisbon is a city where history and flavour go hand in hand, and every district has something
03:23
unique to offer.
03:26
This is Pastéis de Belém, one of the most famous pastry shops in Lisbon.
03:32
Ricardo the supervisor is giving me a behind-the-scenes look at this historic spot.
03:38
This bakery is known as the birthplace of Portugal's original custard tarts.
03:42
It began making the classic tarts in 1837, using an ancient recipe.
03:48
That formula remains a closely guarded secret.
03:51
Only a handful of master bakers know the whole process, and it's all handled behind a locked
03:56
door.
03:57
So this is the door with all the secrets behind.
04:00
Yeah, this is the only door that is closed even for me in this enterprise.
04:04
Only three persons know the receipt and know how to do it, and they are the only ones available
04:08
to come inside.
04:10
These are the original Portuguese custard tarts.
04:13
You'll find versions all over the world, but the true Pastéis de Belém are made only
04:17
here, in this bakery.
04:19
The pastry chefs here are experts in every step of the process.
04:24
I'm getting the chance to try a little pastry-making myself, with the help of the bakery's experienced
04:31
staff.
04:32
Oh, this way round, this way round.
04:35
Always that way.
04:37
Once they're shaped, they are then filled using a machine.
04:41
The tarts then go straight into the ovens, where they bake at a high heat to get that perfect
04:47
flaky crust and caramelized top.
04:50
So, really, this line is what you have made more before.
04:54
And they are beautiful.
04:55
You did it so well.
04:56
They look beautiful.
04:58
It's the layers I love.
04:59
They are perfect.
05:00
You cannot see the difference between yours and the other ones.
05:03
They are just perfect.
05:04
After seeing how everything comes together, it's finally time to taste these famous pastries.
05:10
And they are truly delicious, crispy on the outside, and soft and creamy in the middle.
05:16
A great way to round off this sweet adventure.
05:19
Lisbon is a city full of atmosphere, elegance, and creativity.
05:26
Many of its walls are covered with artwork and painted tiles.
05:30
I'm heading to a place dedicated to this unique craft.
05:34
I'm here at the National Tile Museum to learn more about this iconic art form and discover how it's still inspiring artists today.
05:43
To explore this artwork in more depth, museum coordinator Dora Fernandez is showing me around.
05:52
This museum showcases a collection of Portuguese tiles dating back to the 15th century.
05:58
It tells the story of how this art form has evolved over time.
06:03
Many of these tiles show scenes from historical events or religious stories.
06:10
Here we have one of the most iconic panels of the museum because it was one of the first productions of tiles.
06:17
This big panel done and produced in Lisbon.
06:22
The museum is housed in the former convent of Madre de Deus, a 16th century building that adds its own history to the collection.
06:30
Alongside Christian artwork, you'll also find tiles with geometric patterns influenced by the city's Islamic past.
06:40
The museum showcases tiles of every type, from simple designs to grand panels.
06:46
Together, they show the richness of Portugal's tile tradition.
06:51
So this is the big panorama of Lisbon.
06:54
So you can see 14 kilometers of the coast of Lisbon just before the earthquake.
07:01
The museum's pieces show how Lisbon's history, culture and art have changed through the centuries.
07:07
Today, this tradition is encouraged through tile making workshops.
07:12
Classes teach simple painting techniques that help bring each tile to life.
07:17
I'm finishing my visit to the museum with a private class, guided by tile expert Joanna.
07:24
It's a hands-on way to experience the craft behind Lisbon's tiles and to end my time here with something truly personal.
07:35
Next up on my journey, I'm checking into the Lapa Palace Hotel.
07:38
A stunning historic building surrounded by gardens and old world charm.
07:44
This beautifully restored 19th century palace was once owned by a Viscount.
07:50
And it still carries the same sense of elegance today.
07:54
One thing that stands out about this former palace is how grand and peaceful it feels.
07:59
There's such a sense of heritage here. You can feel it in every detail.
08:03
The hotel's rooms are classic in style, with lots of decorative touches.
08:10
It's full of character and sophistication, just as you'd expect from a historic palace.
08:16
Outside, the terraces look out over the Tagus River, giving you some of the best views in the city.
08:23
Downstairs, that same style continues in the hotel's restaurant space.
08:29
You know, this doesn't feel like a hotel. It feels like an integral part of the city.
08:37
And it really does take you back to Portugal's incredible history.
08:42
Next up on my journey, I'm wandering deeper into Lisbon to discover more of what the city has to offer.
08:48
I'm heading to Sola dos Prasandos, a family-run spot celebrated for its fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese flavours.
08:58
It's considered a local landmark, attracting visitors for over 40 years.
09:04
I've been invited for a private masterclass with one of the restaurant's chefs.
09:08
Chef, what traditional Portuguese cuisine are we preparing?
09:13
We have three dishes. Okay, we start with the octopus.
09:17
Then a fried chicken with the garlic oil and coriander.
09:20
Then, in the main dish, we have lobster rice.
09:25
Who doesn't love a lobster? I mean, they are pretty special. And this is a Portuguese lobster?
09:29
Portuguese lobster.
09:30
The secret sauce for each dish is made from the leftover vegetables, a classic approach that ensures nothing goes to waste.
09:38
Now it's time for us to get cooking.
09:42
I think one of my favourite smells has to be coriander. It's such a beautiful aroma.
09:47
As we build the flavours, I can see just how much care goes into these traditional Portuguese dishes.
09:55
I don't think anything gets better than just simple ingredients.
09:58
And I think that's what Portuguese cooking is all about. Simple ingredients that come together.
10:03
These dishes are all about layering flavours and letting the ingredients speak for themselves.
10:09
Lobster, octopus and mussels are prized ingredients in Portuguese cooking.
10:14
And with just a light touch, they become something really special.
10:19
After my masterclass, it's time to taste some of the dishes with Carolina Cardoso, part of the family behind this restaurant.
10:27
We start with the octopus. My grandparents, they brought this dish to Lisbon when they opened the restaurant.
10:33
The clams is just the normal Portuguese clams. There's no magic, no nothing.
10:38
It's just about really good products from our coast. Portuguese cuisine, it's all about the ingredients.
10:42
Sharing this meal with Carolina helps me understand why this place is so popular.
10:49
It's food with history, family and flavour.
10:55
As my journey comes to a close, I'm ending my time in Lisbon with a boat trip along the coast.
11:01
Carolina, a local tour guide, is taking me out on the water.
11:05
It's a lovely way to see the city from another angle.
11:08
I think one of my favourite things is all the different colours and then the pop of the trees at the top.
11:15
You notice the colours so much and it's the same as what you notice in the tiles as well.
11:19
The blues, the whites, the yellows, the pink.
11:23
It's great just sitting back here relaxing on the ocean, getting to see the different elements and levels of the city.
11:29
After a fantastic day on the water, the captain lets me take the wheel as we head back to shore.
11:38
For me, Lisbon is a city of layers.
11:42
Layers to its history, layers to its streets and layers to its famous pastry.
11:46
I've had such a wonderful time here in Lisbon and truly feel part of the Portuguese culture.
11:53
But now, onto the next adventure.
