00:00Did you picture five years ago for you to be married?
00:02Five years ago, I was partying in college.
00:04I didn't picture anything other than blackness
00:07because I was unconscious every day.
00:09That sounds terrible.
00:11I would have never dated you in college.
00:18I have decided to go in the direction of real estate.
00:22If this doesn't work out, what are you going to do?
00:25Come up with something that you have as a backup plan as well.
00:31Oh, my gosh.
00:33My friend Anita has a daughter that has autism and Tourette syndrome.
00:38And you remember the link I sent you on the device?
00:42New pulse, kind of like deep brain stimulation, but not invasive.
00:46I think you should explore it.
00:48You got that baby fever going on.
00:50I don't have baby fever.
00:51I just want kids.
00:53Colin's really moving up the timeline here.
00:56I actually have a question for the doctor.
00:59How your medications would work when you're pregnant.
01:06We're not talking about this right now.
01:08You're excited to meet Dr. Flaherty?
01:30I am.
01:31I'm really excited to meet her.
01:32We're in Boston to meet with my neurologist, Dr. Flaherty.
01:35She's been my regular doctor ever since my parents and I met her last year.
01:39We usually do virtual appointments because Boston's about nine hours away.
01:44But I do want to see her in person because I have some serious concerns.
01:48You have a nine-inch penis.
01:50That's a serious concern.
01:54Hopefully she can give us the reel on everything.
01:57Yeah.
01:57I was able to get a couple days off of work to be able to go with Balin.
02:02Her parents usually go to these appointments, but since we're getting married, I want to
02:07be able to like step in and be there for her.
02:10Hello.
02:11I like to usually always have someone come with me to my doctor's appointment because
02:16I always forget something.
02:18It's good to see you.
02:19This is my fiance, Colin.
02:21Very nice to meet you.
02:22And it's his first time at a doctor's appointment ever.
02:24I've heard a lot of great things about you, so I'm excited.
02:28Dick.
02:30So what's on your mind to talk about?
02:33A lot.
02:35I have several other conditions on top of my Tourette's, including a mood disorder that
02:40can definitely increase my tics.
02:45My doctor prescribed a medication a little while ago that helps with my mood.
02:51However, one of its unfortunate side effects is weight gain.
02:55I know the medicine that you put me on for my mood.
02:59It's been working.
03:01But I also am just concerned with the fact that since I've been on it, I've gained 18 pounds.
03:07Getting on this new mood stabilizer has really, really helped.
03:11But with the wedding coming up and getting some comments online questioning if I'm pregnant
03:17or not, the weight gain has definitely started to affect my mental health.
03:22A lot of the medicines that boost serotonin, it turns out they actually block what are called
03:27satiety receptors in your gut, the things that tell you you're no longer hungry.
03:31So when they're blocked, your brain is getting a message, you're still hungry, you're still hungry.
03:35Wow.
03:35It's a major side effect.
03:37You know, it's not like just cosmetic.
03:38It's important for your health that you can maintain a normal weight.
03:43So in my mind, the new meds, the GLP-1 agonists, they're the best treatment for it.
03:51GLP-1 agonists are drugs that you take weekly injections and they decrease the brain's desire
03:58for food.
03:59That's what I'd recommend is to start one of those meds.
04:02And I can stay on the other meds I like?
04:04Yeah.
04:04Yay!
04:05I'm really glad that I'm able to stay on my existing medication to help with my mood.
04:11And ticks.
04:13Hopefully I'm able with the GLP-1 to lose some weight and regain my confidence back.
04:20How was your physical pain?
04:22Terrible.
04:23Tell me.
04:24I've had numbness.
04:26It's in my pinky and my ring and my thumb.
04:29I think it's from hitting myself when I tick.
04:33I'll hit, like, my chest.
04:38But there'll be times, like, I've hit my head off doors, things like that.
04:42I like to either smack it back against walls or hit tables with the front of my head.
04:47Uh-huh.
04:47Yeah, yeah.
04:48My motor tics cause me so much pain and exhaust me.
04:53Just moving my neck casually really hurts when you do it 300 times a day.
04:59When Balyn's dealing with her motor tics, literally you just have to, like, sit there and make sure that she doesn't really hurt herself.
05:09But it is hard to sit by and watch.
05:12Watch that tic reel in that tic.
05:13So one thing I can tell you pretty certainly is that the hand tingling problem that you're having is not from hitting your head.
05:20That is something that's, if you're gaining weight and you're also getting, like, puffy skin from it being hot and, you know, you've got fluid extra swelling in your skin, that can make those nerves pinch.
05:30Oh, that's a relief.
05:32Yeah.
05:33I want to ask you about something else I heard about.
05:36There's this device called NuPulse.
05:39Mm-hmm.
05:39I know it's a non-invasive device that you wear that helps your tics.
05:44Yeah, so there's not that much known about it, but it's doing it through electrical stimulation, and it seems to quiet things down a little bit, so.
05:53Have you read into any of the clinical studies that they've done?
05:57A little bit, yes.
05:58And it seemed like it had a significant effect, like they were reasonable papers.
06:03It seemed like it's pretty safe.
06:05And is it specifically for, like, your motor tics, or will it also help your vocal tics as well?
06:12I don't think so, but why not try it?
06:14I could be so wrong.
06:16You know, maybe it would help the hitting tics.
06:17Mm-hmm.
06:17That would be good.
06:18That's what we were hoping.
06:20The NuPulse bracelet is different from deep brain stimulation, which we decided wasn't going to be helpful for her.
06:26If it doesn't require surgery, it's something you just put on your wrist.
06:29Mm-hmm.
06:30For someone with bad tics, if NuPulse helps those tics, it can be life-changing.
06:36They'll go out more.
06:37They can do more activities.
06:39They may not injure themselves as often.
06:41Well, I would love to try this device.
06:45Yeah.
06:46It's not available here.
06:47If you did want to try it, you'd have to go to the UK, I'm afraid.
06:51Yeah.
06:51We're definitely going to have to, like, talk about it.
06:57Yeah.
06:58Um, okay, so I'll prescribe that GLP-1 agonist, and we can talk about how to administer it.
07:05I actually do have one more question.
07:06Um, if we plan on having a family and having kids, the medications that she's on right now,
07:15how is that going to affect her during pregnancy if she would have to get off of any or get on new ones?
07:22Um, it's definitely something we can talk about and think a lot about,
07:27but the meds that you're on, I think, are okay.
07:31Okay.
07:32Um, no more baby questions.
07:34Balin had said that she's done having the conversation about kids,
07:41but I wasn't bringing it up to her.
07:43I was bringing it up to the doctor.
07:45And it wasn't about kids.
07:46It was about being pregnant.
07:48So, a little bit different.
07:51Oh, yeah.
07:52Huge difference.
07:54Huge.
07:55Sometimes it's just, like, no means no.
07:59Are you ready?
08:00Yeah, I'm ready to go.
08:01Okay.
08:01Okay.
08:02Thank you so much.
08:03Yeah, thank you.
08:03Yeah, it's great to see you both.
08:04It was nice to meet you.
08:06Bye now.
08:07It was really nice to be a part of Balin's neurologist appointment.
08:11It was really cool to learn the ins and outs,
08:13and I would love to be able to come to more of these appointments.
08:23I feel like we stopped and got these umbrellas in case it rains.
08:26Yeah, because it does look like it is about to rain.
08:28Very...
08:29Oh, no, yeah!
08:30I can take it.
08:31Sweet.
08:32Very pretty city, though.
08:33It is.
08:34You know, just chill right here and take in this view.
08:37I'd love to.
08:38Piece of...
08:39Bald bitch!
08:40Do the bald people have to stand right there?
08:42Bald bitch!
08:44Oh, my God.
08:45Damn!
08:46He has the biggest mustache I've ever seen in my entire life.
08:49That's a squirrel!
08:51Oh, my God.
08:52When I tick at random strangers, it can feel annoying.
08:58You little wanker!
08:59You little wanker!
09:02In all Nantucket, they are wankers.
09:04Nantucket.
09:06Nantucket.
09:06Nantucket.
09:06There's a boat over there that says Nantucket.
09:08What do you want me to do?
09:09Everything's in my peripheral.
09:10Everybody's screwed right now.
09:12But, like, sometimes you just can't help it.
09:14Sometimes it's just like, what the f*** do we have going on here?
09:16I really like Alice.
09:20She's really smart.
09:22She's heard about New Pulse.
09:23Isn't that exciting?
09:24It's really nice that she is saying, hey, it's not going to hurt.
09:27Right?
09:27But then there's also, like, the flip side of it is, like...
09:29It's not going to hurt, but you've got to go all the way to the UK.
09:32Yeah.
09:32It's starting to rain.
09:35All right.
09:35Oh, there are minis.
09:36Oh, all right.
09:38I feel like I'm in the UK right now.
09:40Hello.
09:41Hello.
09:42I'll be speaking in a British accent the entire time we're over there if we go.
09:46Yeah.
09:47But in reality, hopping on a plane and leaving tomorrow isn't, like, our best bet with wedding planning and saving money.
09:55Devices that can help reduce tics don't come around often.
09:59But money isn't the only obstacle with a trip like this.
10:03You're winning!
10:04Mother f***er.
10:05I have never gone to that part of the world, so who really knows how my tics will be triggered there.
10:11Plus, Colin's going to have to get time off of work.
10:13I'm going to have to get a passport.
10:15And there is my struggle with plane travel.
10:20I'm worried about the flight.
10:22Like, whenever I navigate the airport is when I'm the most anxious.
10:25Yeah.
10:26And it's not...
10:27For me, I'm anxious when we take off.
10:29But also, I don't like the idea of flying over water the entire time.
10:34So you're actually more nervous than me to fly.
10:37Yeah.
10:38Do you know how many planes go missing just, poof, when they're flying over water?
10:42I don't like that.
10:43Why are we talking about this right now?
10:45I'm just saying.
10:46You're not helping my anxiety at all.
10:48Well, that's where my anxiety is.
10:49Okay, that's great.
10:50Suck it back in.
10:51I've known that Colin has flight anxiety.
10:54It's not new to me.
10:55Because when me and Colin took a trip to LA, Colin's anxiety on that flight was terrible.
11:01Yeah, but I feel like I can hold myself together to the point where I'm not making Balen's anxiety, like, really bad.
11:08But, I mean, at the end of the day, I'm still going to have anxiety about it.
11:11Like, that's literally how planes go missing.
11:14They crash on the water.
11:15Here we go.
11:16Here we go.
11:17Here we go.
11:19You can't even hold it together right now.
11:22Oh, my God.
11:23Anyway, we still haven't even heard back about our budget regarding the wedding.
11:27So, I mean, I think it would be kind of irrational to...
11:30Make a decision?
11:30Go ahead and fly over to the UK.
11:32Oh, yeah, completely.
11:33I know.
11:34And I don't think...
11:35I just think that I'm going to bring it up to my mom, let her know about how the conversation went, her and my dad.
11:40Yeah.
11:40Because they would know best.
11:42And just kind of see what they're advising, what they would kind of say to go from there.
11:47Yeah.
11:48It's fine with me.
11:50If this device actually works for Balen, it would be a complete game changer for her.
11:55But taking a trip to the UK is not the most realistic thing to do right now.
12:03Eat a bag of decks.
12:06There's really not a safe place on a golf course around Balen.
12:11Just tap it.
12:13Miss it, bitch.
12:14It was a really good trip.
12:19Did you bring up the new Pulse to her?
12:22Yes, I did.
12:23And she gave it a go.
12:25I don't think I realize how much I actually want this until this moment.
12:42Me and Colin got back from Boston yesterday.
12:45And I'm at my parents to pick up the dogs because my parents were pet sitting.
12:50But first, my brothers offered to help me with a little problem I have.
12:55Okay, who's helping me?
12:57Hey, bae.
12:57What's up?
12:58I'm going golfing with Colin, and I need help with my swing.
13:01Colin's meeting up with an old friend later this week, and we'll be playing golf with him.
13:06I'm not good.
13:08I probably need the most help with driving.
13:13Back.
13:14I don't want to get hit in the teeth.
13:16In the past, my ticks have definitely interfered with me golfing.
13:19I've thrown the club a couple times.
13:21I like to eat the ball, throw the ball.
13:22You're ticking, so you have to put it in your mouth.
13:25And you put it in there?
13:25No, I just shoot it out.
13:26I don't want to go golfing, so you just put it in your mouth.
13:28Mm-hmm.
13:31Isn't it supposed to be like a fist away?
13:34Fist away?
13:34I don't know.
13:36Don't you guys golf?
13:37Yeah, but I just go up there and hit.
13:38I'm naturally good at everything I do.
13:40Congrats.
13:42I'm not.
13:43So am I, by the way.
13:44No, you're not.
13:45Yes, I am.
13:47Holy damn.
13:48This is going to hit me on the golf course.
13:51All right, bae, let me see that club.
13:52You can learn from the best over here.
13:54Beckner, who's the best golfer in the family?
13:57Um, probably Sven.
14:00This one's for a scholarship.
14:02Yeah.
14:04You don't know what you're talking about.
14:05Oh, good shot.
14:08Holy.
14:09I'm going over here to hit it now.
14:11What does it take to be a good golfer?
14:13Endurance.
14:14Endurance.
14:15Confidence.
14:16What?
14:16You swing one club and then you just pick up and walk.
14:18That's not endurance.
14:19Yeah, but you've got to do the same thing for the next time and it has to be just as good.
14:25So consistency, not endurance.
14:28What does endurance mean?
14:30I don't know.
14:34There it is.
14:35That's a good shot.
14:35That's a good hit.
14:36Sweet.
14:37There we go.
14:38You all have a good night and a good day.
14:41I'm out.
14:41We know I'm literally going to hurt you.
14:51Is that poison ivy?
14:53No.
14:53It's shiny.
14:54Okay.
14:55They're wider leaves.
14:56They're three.
14:58Hi!
14:59What are you doing?
15:01Your mother's learning about yard care.
15:04Yeah, make sure that's closed.
15:05Oh my goodness!
15:07Hi, everybody!
15:08Do they look heavier?
15:09From snacks?
15:10Thank you guys for watching them.
15:15Hey!
15:16It was a really good trip, not going to lie.
15:20What did you learn with, like, your medicine and the unintended waking?
15:28She told me that everyone that experiences this specific type of side effect with this specific type of medicine,
15:34she prescribes a GLP-1.
15:37And I'm like, okay, sick.
15:40Give me it.
15:41In the past, Balen has actually stopped taking certain medications because they've caused her to gain weight.
15:46So I'm essentially comfortable with Balen taking this GLP-1 because she can stay on the mood stabilizer, which is actually working that she needs to stay on.
15:57More importantly, what I'm aching to get to is, did you bring up the new pulse to her?
16:04Yes, I did.
16:05And she gave it a go.
16:07Like a go-go?
16:08Like what?
16:08Like she's looked at clinical studies, she's read things, and dick, and then Tucketheil wankers.
16:14I picked that up in Boston.
16:15What's a wanker?
16:17Masturbator.
16:17Oh my god, help us.
16:20Gosh.
16:23What?
16:25What?
16:26I love it.
16:26I'm like numb to the idea of like all her tics at this point.
16:31Like nothing's off limits.
16:34Just nothing.
16:35Okay, anyways, moving on.
16:38So she's basically like, give it a go.
16:40Give it a go, except for it's in the UK.
16:43So I'd love to go.
16:46But like with wedding planning right now, it's just not in our budget.
16:50It's just not.
16:53Hmm.
16:54I tend to be the person pushing Balin to explore new treatments, but I do realize a trip like
17:01this could be very challenging.
17:04There's money issues, the logistics of the airport, the length of the flight, and that's
17:09if Colin can get the time off work.
17:11So did you ever say anything to Colin about the possibility of this happening and like
17:17Who would even go?
17:18I would think you and Colin, right?
17:20Well, speaking of Colin, that man's got flight anxiety.
17:23He has flight anxiety?
17:25Oh, wow.
17:25This is the blind leading the blind.
17:27He needs to be dosed up.
17:29This is, okay, there's lots of.
17:30No, there's some things where I'm like.
17:32Isn't he in the air force?
17:33That's not helping my anxiety, babe.
17:35That's not helping it.
17:36I didn't know that about him.
17:38Mm-hmm.
17:38That's fantastic.
17:40Maybe it's just a long flight that he's worried about or the ocean or something.
17:44Yeah.
17:44But I don't know.
17:45I wouldn't join the Navy if I didn't like boats.
17:47I feel so bad for him, but it's like, oh my gosh, how is this going to work?
17:52Because she needs a lot of help when she's traveling.
17:57It's a really cool device.
17:58It would be really awesome if we'd be able to get over there.
18:00To be able to, like, see in that moment how much it helps and how much it doesn't is.
18:06Oh, it'd be like the opportunity of a lifetime.
18:09Yeah.
18:11I don't think I realize how much I actually want this until this moment.
18:18The device is not available in the U.S. yet, but maybe it will be here before my wedding,
18:22which is like 10 months away.
18:24It would be extremely uncomfortable and painful to feel like I have to hold my own ticks in
18:30on my wedding day.
18:31So I would really like to try it as soon as possible.
18:35Finding out now that it works for me could really ease my anxiety.
18:38But there's a lot of obstacles standing in the way.
18:42I just don't want to get, like, all my hopes up.
18:48I have a gun.
18:50Does it have to be on the front?
18:51Woo-hoo!
18:52Woo-hoo!
18:53You're bald.
18:54Sure.
18:54Woo!
18:55Well, I totally get why she wants to go.
18:58Why would we leave any stone unturned at this point?
19:01I have been the one encouraging Balin to check out New Pulse, and I believe it's still worth
19:07exploring.
19:08Financially, their wedding's their top priority right now.
19:11You think that they're not going to go?
19:12Yeah.
19:13And I don't want that to happen.
19:14Hey, bitch.
19:32Even though we don't know if we're going to London yet to try the new Pulse device, I don't
19:38want the fact that I don't have a passport to get in the way of that, especially since
19:42they can take a while to get.
19:43So, I decided to take a ride share today to the closest passport office to get my passport.
19:49I have a gun.
19:51Oh, my God.
19:52Does it have to be on the front?
19:54I have a gun.
20:00Oh, my God.
20:02Unfortunately, the passport office is inside a library.
20:06Silence is a huge trigger for my tics.
20:10I also try to avoid museums, movie theaters, churches, anywhere quiet, basically.
20:18You can catch me not there.
20:21Oh, your nails are so pretty.
20:22Oh, thank you.
20:23Are you here for passports?
20:25Yes, I am here for passports.
20:26Perfect.
20:27Hey, dick.
20:28Do you have your picture ID on you?
20:33Let's see.
20:35The woman that I'm talking to doesn't react to my tics at all, which is really relieving.
20:42If I'm around somebody that doesn't know what Tourette's is, I never know how they will react,
20:47whether laughing, staring, or not knowing what to say.
20:52I have a gun.
20:53Okay.
20:54Okay.
20:55Let me go make some copies, okay?
20:56Okay, sweet.
20:59You're bald.
21:00Sir.
21:01Bitch.
21:02Bitch.
21:03Bitch.
21:04Why don't come to libraries?
21:06I'm the loudest person in here.
21:07I'm using my CBIT technique, which is deep breathing and masking.
21:15I like whispering as my favorite masking technique.
21:17I'm going to take your picture, okay?
21:19Do you mind if you give me a countdown before, just because I have Tourette syndrome, so it's
21:26hard for me to all just make faces the entire time.
21:28Yeah, of course.
21:29Of course.
21:30Okay, sweet.
21:31I have a gun.
21:32I don't.
21:33I don't.
21:34You ready?
21:35Mm-hmm.
21:36Three, two, one.
21:38Perfect.
21:39Sweet.
21:40Yay.
21:41Bitch.
21:42Now you can come back over here, okay?
21:43Okay.
21:44My tics were pretty typical today compared to other trips to the library.
21:48Perfect.
21:49Okay.
21:50So, um...
21:52I did break your pen.
21:54That's okay.
21:55Okay.
21:56Who really knows when I'll be able to use this passport, but this is just one more step on
22:01my path to adulting.
22:02All right.
22:03And with that, you are all done.
22:06Thank you so much.
22:07You're welcome.
22:08Have a lovely day.
22:09Thank you, you too.
22:10I have a gun.
22:15God, get me out of here.
22:20We'll never be back.
22:22Just kidding.
22:23I probably will with kids.
22:25That'll be fun.
22:26them kids.
22:40Did you get Balin's text?
22:45No.
22:46She got her passport tonight.
22:49Oh my gosh.
22:50She didn't waste any time.
22:53Okay.
22:54Well, that's good.
22:55I'm sure it's not an easy process for her to go do that, especially if she had to go do
23:00it by herself.
23:01A couple days ago, Balin's neurologist gave her the go-ahead to try the NuPulse device,
23:07but it's in England.
23:09The fact that Balin went and got her passport kind of speaks volumes about her ambition
23:16to really want to figure something out.
23:18Well, I totally get why she wants to go.
23:21Heck, I want her to go.
23:22Why would we leave any stone unturned at this point, right?
23:25We've come this far.
23:27Well, financially, their wedding to them is their top priority right now.
23:31So you think that they're not going to go?
23:33Yeah.
23:34And I don't want that to happen.
23:36I'm in the way for...
23:39I mean, I'm willing to throw some of our money at this to make this happen right away.
23:47Yeah, I would love to be able to take that burden out of the equation for Bae and Colin.
23:54But I don't know.
23:55There's so many what-ifs and ambiguity to it, too.
23:59Even if it works, it's not like you can even leave there with it.
24:02So that's where I'm like, that's where the balancing comes in.
24:04It's like, you have to weigh it.
24:06Like, you have other kids and family to worry about.
24:08And I know that her health is still a priority in our lives.
24:12But you still have to objectively stand back and say,
24:16could the good here outweigh the bad?
24:20I have been the one encouraging Balin to check out New Pulse,
24:25and I believe it's still worth exploring.
24:27But I have to remind myself that we are a one-income household,
24:30and we do have five other children that we support.
24:34I mean, over the years, to help Balin with her care,
24:39the sacrifices that we've made...
24:41Are endless.
24:42It's uncountable, honestly.
24:45Sometimes the other kids have kind of went without.
24:48But on the flip side, she has such strong tics and loud tics.
24:54Quite honestly, her Tourette has stripped her of the experiences
25:01that some of us take for granted, like church and the movies,
25:04and quiet place experiences because she feels like a social outcast.
25:11Even if Balin can't bring the device home with her,
25:14the intrinsic reward of it is knowing that it would provide her hope if it worked.
25:19There's no means that I wouldn't go to provide my kid with that.
25:25I just think, you want to go to bed every night for the next 10 years,
25:31wondering if something would have worked or not?
25:33Or do you want an answer?
25:34Of course I want an answer.
25:36And to be honest, I kind of want to be there for the test.
25:39And I know that they want to kind of forge their own path together,
25:44but this is completely uncharted territory,
25:47so I would love if she would feel comfortable for us to experience this together.
25:53But I don't want to feel, like, weird about it.
25:55Like, oh, we're inviting ourselves.
25:57Like, we're going with you.
25:59Like, sorry, this is a family thing.
26:00I want her to be...
26:01No, you invite her.
26:02I want her to be...
26:03You have who?
26:04Let's go on a trip there.
26:05Oh.
26:06We make it as a invite to her.
26:10Like, hey, we would like to do this for you.
26:13We can even take the boys with us.
26:15Mm-hmm.
26:16Give them an experience.
26:18Hmm.
26:22I love that idea.
26:24If we can figure out how to do it.
26:27If we're going to go big, we might as well go big.
26:29We have never been to the UK before.
26:31And they've been on Balen's journey with her.
26:34They've been alongside for this whole roller coaster.
26:37And it also provides us a way to support her,
26:39because it's so unpredictable.
26:41You have no idea how much stress or anxiety
26:43or how much she's going to hold back her tics,
26:46and then eventually it comes crumbling down,
26:48and she could be in the fetal position,
26:50and she spends the entire trip trying to recover,
26:53only to get back on a flight and come all the way back.
26:56I mean, it's not just the financial aspect of it.
26:59It's the travel.
27:00Yeah.
27:01I'd rather join them at this point anyways
27:03after hearing that Colin also has some flying anxiety.
27:08Like, the travel piece of it could be a huge hurdle.
27:12I'm not saying that they couldn't do it together,
27:14but any time that people are willing to support you,
27:17you should welcome that.
27:19All right.
27:21I'm going to, uh...
27:23I think it's a go.
27:24Don't put it out there until we know 100%
27:26we can make it work,
27:27because I don't want to give her any false hope.
27:28Yeah.
27:29Like, you've got to figure out vacation time.
27:30I've got to figure out what works for the boys,
27:33for school, budget.
27:35We have a lot to figure out
27:36in order to really make this come to life.
27:43So I've been planning a major career move
27:46and going into real estate.
27:48More than 80% of people who get their real estate license
27:51stop, you know, in less than five years.
27:53There is so much potential to succeed in this field,
27:56but there's even more potential to fail.
28:13I have a gun.
28:15So I've been planning a major career move
28:20and going into real estate
28:22when I get out of the military.
28:24An old friend of mine, Josh,
28:26is actually in real estate in Myrtle Beach,
28:28and him and his colleague, Nick,
28:30are in town for some business,
28:32and they invited Balen and I
28:33to come play golf with them.
28:35Oh.
28:36I'm excited, but I'm also very nervous,
28:39because this is only my second time
28:40on a real golf course.
28:42Oh.
28:43Compared to, like, mini golf or the range.
28:46Your head's got to be on a swivel.
28:47Actually, there was one time
28:48where me and Colin went to the golfing range,
28:50and he was sitting behind me,
28:52and the ball went backwards and almost hit him.
28:54There's really not a safe place on a golf course
28:56around Balen.
28:58Is there something I should know
29:00before Josh and Nick get here?
29:02Like, is one of them bald?
29:04I don't think so.
29:06Oh, there's Josh.
29:07Hi.
29:08Hi.
29:09Either one of them are bald.
29:11I told you.
29:12What's up, man?
29:13How are you, man?
29:14Good. How are you?
29:15Good to see you.
29:16Good to see you.
29:17Hi, I'm Josh.
29:18Nice to meet you.
29:19Nice to meet you.
29:20I've known Colin for over 10 years.
29:21I was his youth pastor
29:23when he was in middle school,
29:24and he reached out knowing
29:26that we had our own real estate company.
29:28Let's go play a few holes.
29:29Let's do it.
29:30Awesome. Let's do it.
29:36Roller coaster.
29:37Be careful.
29:38Oh, are we seeing the break?
29:39Oh, oh.
29:40That don't sound good.
29:43We made it across.
29:45Eat a bag of Dex.
29:47Oh, we got a beautiful day to golf.
29:51Nice wind.
29:52Yep.
29:55Just tapping it.
29:57Just tapping it.
29:59Miss it, bitch.
30:06I was a little nervous to meet Balen in person
30:08for the first time today
30:09because I have never met someone with Tourette's.
30:11Yeah.
30:12I have not met anyone with Tourette's before.
30:13So it caught me a little off guard
30:14when Josh first got up there.
30:15What she said on his backswing was pretty funny,
30:17and I had to hold it in.
30:19Not to laugh.
30:23Get over.
30:24Oh, what a shot.
30:29Miss it, bitch.
30:32Oh, baby.
30:33I might be on the green.
30:34Good looking ball, too.
30:35Oh, my gosh.
30:36I might be in trouble here.
30:41Miss it, bitch.
30:42Bitch.
30:45That's in the water.
30:46All right.
30:47Oh.
30:49Well, there's no pressure on Balen.
30:50She can't do worse than Colin.
30:52Living in my own lane.
30:55Now I do it.
30:56You ain't gonna stop me killing it.
30:58Want me on your team just a little bit.
31:00Take a look around you and see how I'm feeling it.
31:02Yeah.
31:03I'm feeling it.
31:04See you later.
31:12I'm just gonna move up.
31:15Oh, you're close to the fairway now.
31:17Here we go.
31:18Okay.
31:20Oh, my God.
31:21We're gonna get there by next year.
31:23Oh, man.
31:27Oh.
31:28Water ball.
31:29That was better contact.
31:30Yep.
31:31Yep.
31:32Maybe I just need to get a little warmed up.
31:34A little wrist flicking.
31:35Making sure the swing is good.
31:37It comes up.
31:38Boom.
31:39Boom.
31:40Boom.
31:41Boom.
31:42Yeah.
31:43There you go.
31:44Sweet.
31:45There we go.
31:46There you go.
31:47Great shot.
31:52Just topped it.
31:53Yep.
31:54It's okay.
31:55You wanna drive up to my bowl?
31:56It's five feet.
31:57Sure.
31:58I'm walking mine off.
31:59Which one?
32:00How do you use this thing now?
32:01What's this for?
32:02It's reverse.
32:03You don't use that.
32:04Okay, so all I do is...
32:05The right is gas.
32:06The left is brake.
32:11Wait.
32:12Turn the wheel.
32:13Why is...
32:14This way?
32:15Yep.
32:16And then press the gas.
32:17There you go.
32:18Now straighten it out.
32:19Straighten it out.
32:20There you go.
32:22Sorry.
32:23I almost took you guys out.
32:24Now press brake.
32:25Press brake.
32:26And then push right here.
32:27Yep.
32:28Push down all the way.
32:32No, I've never driven a golf cart in my entire life.
32:35It's the same as a car.
32:38I don't drive cars either.
32:41So thank you for that.
32:43But in one year, out the other.
32:45So how'd you get so good at golf?
32:47He plays every day.
32:49I wish.
32:50Definitely real estate.
32:51You get to play golf, you know, often.
32:52Josh was telling me you're thinking about getting into real estate.
32:55Yeah, I am.
32:56Awesome.
32:57I think what really intrigues me about it is, like, the amount of success that you have in real estate is based off of the amount of effort that you put in.
33:05No, there's no ceiling what you can make.
33:07But especially in the beginning, it's a grind.
33:09The top three things that we see that attract people to real estate are freedom of their time, unlimited income potential, and they get to be their own boss.
33:17But there's a lot that goes into it.
33:19It is a five- or six-day-a-week job from day one.
33:24You have to be available.
33:26And that's why it's really important that both of you are on the same page as well.
33:30He's going to be away a lot.
33:31He might be on showings, weekends.
33:33He'll be running open houses, running outside, you know, for phone calls, different things like that.
33:36So it really helps if, you know, you're supportive with that, that he's going to be busy.
33:40And on his phone a lot, probably.
33:42Mm-hmm.
33:43It's really important that you .
33:45Sounds like bull me.
33:46Holy .
33:47It sounds way longer than a nine-to-five job.
33:51Colin's been talking about starting a family soon.
33:54But I don't want to be alone 24-7 all day every day with an infant.
34:01Yeah, but even hearing the nitty-gritty parts that Josh and Nick are telling me, it just comes down to it being something of mine.
34:10And I'm putting all of this hard work and effort into my business, into my name.
34:18And that will give me a lot of satisfaction at the end of the day.
34:23It's a lot of work.
34:25And you might show 20 properties to a couple over seven days.
34:29And then they choose to buy in another area.
34:31It's also, it's tough to kind of get over, you know, you could go three, six months without a paycheck.
34:36And, you know, as a realtor, you're an independent contractor.
34:41And so health care can be challenging.
34:43It's not cheap.
34:44Yeah.
34:45So more than 80% of people who get their real estate license stop, you know, in less than five years.
34:51Yeah.
34:53If anything, that statistic gives me motivation.
34:55Like, I kind of like when odds are betting against me so that I can just prove people wrong.
35:00Knowing that only 20% of people in real estate make it really makes me worried for Colin.
35:06Because there is so much potential to succeed in this field, but there's even more potential to fail.
35:12Also, there is no health insurance and no benefits.
35:16My parents told Colin that he needs a backup plan.
35:19And I'm starting to think he's going to need a backup plan, too.
35:22Did either one of you guys have a backup plan?
35:33Not really.
35:34I just said, I'm going to do this and make it work, you know.
35:37I did not either.
35:38You have to be all in.
35:40You know, it's tough if you have a side job or something else.
35:43Like, it has to be what your priority is.
35:48Yeah.
35:49I know that Alan and Julie want me to have a backup plan going into real estate.
35:53But listening to Josh and Nick makes me think I don't need one.
35:57If I have a backup plan, it's already introduced.
36:00Backup dick.
36:01Yeah.
36:02I can't let myself off the hook in case things get hard.
36:06So that's official then?
36:07No backup plan?
36:08Yeah, it's official.
36:11You want to be around the right people, the right company.
36:14I mean, we have a great company that really focuses on new agents.
36:17You know, kind of giving you a blueprint on how to be successful in this business.
36:20You know?
36:21Yeah.
36:22You should come down to Myrtle Beach to check out our office and allow us to be able to introduce
36:25you to some of the agents and be able to show you a lot of the training that takes place
36:30and what a day-to-day life would look like.
36:34Yeah, we'll have to figure out a time for me to come down there.
36:38With everything that's going on in our lives right now, I don't know when I'll get the opportunity to go down to Myrtle Beach.
36:44But it is an amazing offer.
36:46And I'm feeling really good about this opportunity.
36:49I'm glad you are.
36:50All I hear about is long nights, hard days, long hours.
36:55You'll never be home.
36:57Yay.
36:58I'll be out there golfing.
37:00So, should we get back to the game?
37:03Yeah, let's do it.
37:04Sweet.
37:05Awesome.
37:06Oh, we got a couple missed calls from Alan.
37:17What do you think, Alan?
37:18I've got a couple missed calls from my dad.
37:20What do you think he wants?
37:21I don't know.
37:22Do you care if we call him?
37:23That's fine.
37:24Oh.
37:25Hey.
37:26What's up, dad?
37:29I've been talking with your mom.
37:31And I know you guys are saving for your wedding.
37:35But going to the UK to try the new Pulse device is a must.
37:40So, we're going to pay for you to go.
37:42Oh, my God.
37:43Really?
37:44Yeah.
37:45Thank you so much.
37:46It's exciting.
37:47Yeah.
37:48Thank you, guys.
37:49Hello.
37:50Hello.
37:51I'm so excited.
37:52I'm so excited that my parents were able to make this work for me and Colin.
37:56And I couldn't be any more grateful.
37:59There's one more thing.
38:01We're going to go with you and bring Sven, Vic, and Beckner.
38:05We're just going to do it.
38:06That's kind of cool that it's going to be like a little family vacay
38:08mixed in with a little, like, doctor's appointment.
38:11Well, really the main focus is for you and to make you comfortable traveling.
38:15You don't feel alone.
38:17And we don't want to put Colin in a spot either.
38:19Well, thank you guys for making a decision for everyone to go.
38:22It's worth it.
38:23It's just a small investment in your health.
38:26I love you, Dad.
38:27Thank you so much for letting us know the big news.
38:29Bye.
38:30All right.
38:31Bye.
38:32We're going to London.
38:33Yeah, we are.
38:34And I.
38:35Are you excited for the whole family to go?
38:38Yeah.
38:39I've never flown out of the country.
38:41Yeah.
38:42Well, at least they're there to help us guide us through.
38:44Yeah.
38:45It would have been a fun trip for Balen and I by ourselves, but it also would have been
38:52a little bit scary at the same time because I haven't been out of the country in like 10 years.
38:58She hasn't been out of the country and neither one of us have ever been to that part of the world.
39:04I think so.
39:05Do you think they trust us to go alone?
39:07I don't know.
39:08That's a question I was going to ask you.
39:10Like, does your parents not?
39:12Can you stop doing golf while we're trying to talk serious right now?
39:15It's making me want to sway.
39:16Okay.
39:17Yeah, that's amazing that they're offering to fund it and, you know, help us get there.
39:21But does your dad or parents not trust me to be able to handle the health, you know, appointments,
39:30doctor's appointments?
39:31We're literally about to be married.
39:34I see where you're coming from, but I personally don't think it has anything against you or me.
39:41I just think they've always been invested and always have been there for my health.
39:46And this is huge.
39:47Like, this is a really, really big deal to go there and try on a device and see if it works.
39:52Because this could be life-changing.
39:54Like, maybe my parents just want to be there to suck to witness that right there in front of their eyes.
40:01I can just see it being a trip for all of us to remember.
40:06I'm super grateful that Alan and Julie have offered to pay for this trip to London.
40:12But I can't help but to feel like Julie and Alan don't fully trust me.
40:16It's going to be a little upsetting.
40:19Yeah.
40:21We've been dating for over two years and I've helped Balen through some really tough times.
40:26But even then, it still feels like no matter what I do, it's just not enough for them.
40:31That should be enough.
40:32We're going there for a week, not a month.
40:34We are going to London, England, and I am so excited.
40:47What are you looking forward to the most?
40:49Scones?
40:50Tea?
40:51Crumpets?
40:52I was talking about adventures.
40:53I wasn't talking about food.
40:54What age can you get a tattoo in London?
40:57This is going to be epic.
40:59I have always had anxiety about flying.
41:02I guess I'm slightly concerned that nervous energy pours over onto her.
41:07Holy crap.
41:08That's a lot of people in there.
41:10You're not helping.
41:11Sorry.
41:12Oh, my God.
41:13Something is going on.
41:18The airport's just a tick disaster.
41:20I just really need to get through this as quickly as possible.
41:23Is there anyone behind us?
41:24Because my legs are locked.
41:25Yeah.
41:26We got a long way to go, Balen.
