00:00Australians in Sydney on Wednesday shared mixed views after the country became the first to ban social media for children under 16.
00:13The new rules, which took effect the same day, block access to platforms including TikTok, YouTube and Meta's Instagram and Facebook.
00:23We'd always regulated media in the public interest and I think what the government's trying to do is to return some of the public interest.
00:31That's a good thing because, as I say, there have been harms. It's come internationally, it's come from other places.
00:39I think looking at questions around social media from an Australian perspective is a really good idea.
00:46I don't think bans tend to work. When it's a blanket decision, it doesn't take into account the nuance and the variables and people's individual situations.
00:58And frankly, people tend to find a way around bans if they really want to. So I don't think it's going to achieve what it's set out to achieve.
01:07People are going to find a way around most things. So I think people who want to will find a way around it.
01:14I mean, but I think the government has to do something and I think if it's successful in Australia, which I think it probably will be, the rest of the world will probably follow.
01:25Ten major platforms were ordered to block children or face fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars or about 135 million ringgit.
01:35The rollout follows a year of debate over whether any country can realistically keep children off deeply embedded platforms, making Australia a global test case.
01:45Countries including Denmark, New Zealand and Malaysia have indicated they may adopt similar measures.
01:55Countries withixeira had indicated they may adopt double-edged.
01:59Countries to Mozambique, New Zealand and Malaysia are now determined by looking at the placebo.
