What's the best thing you've watched or read this year? Leeds locals share their recommendations for films, TV series and books for the dark winter nights.
Transcript
00:00Fluribus is on Oklahoma, which is amazing, basically any of the sci-fi things that are on Apple TV+, get my vote.
00:08I think the 48 Laws of Power, it can be a controversial book, but I think it teaches you how to navigate society.
00:16It's a great, actually, Northern Irish programme called Blue Lights, which is on the BBC, fantastic series.
00:23It was the third one, and it's probably the best one.
00:26It showcases Belfast and not always in a negative way.
00:30I've just watched what came from me, so I'm a bit behind with times, and I've just started watching Geeky Blinders, which is really good.
00:38Books, I like Peter James, all the way. Every year, Beans went out, Roy Grace, Detective.
00:44My reading's limited at the minute to anything by Julia Donaldson, so to watch, yeah, I think Stickman's at the theatre.
00:50And to watch on television, I would stick to the oldest, things like Home Alone and Bad Santa and things like that for the adults,
00:57because if you don't like what's going on in the news, then surely it was better in the 80s.
01:01You've got to watch The Holiday.
01:02The Holiday, Love Actually.
01:04Love Actually.
01:04Film Alone.
01:05Elf.
01:06Elf.
01:07The Grinch.
01:07But not the new one, the old one.
01:09Yeah.
01:10Jim Carrey.
01:10Yeah.
01:11And then Not Christmassy, you've got to read Little Women, old book, but you can never go wrong with it.
01:16Stranger Things.
01:17Stranger Things, yeah.
01:18Stranger Things.
01:19And for a book, I'll recommend The Secret History.
01:22The obvious one that I just enjoyed recently is Slow Horses 5.
01:27There's other ones.
01:28I like Billy Bob Thornton, so I like Landman and Goliath.
01:32I love re-watching films that I've seen in the past, and I find on today's modern streaming services,
01:38Netflix, Prime, Disney+, etc.
01:40There are great availability of the classics.
01:44Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Liam Neeson, Jim Carrey.
01:49I'm a huge fan of re-watching what I enjoyed when I was younger and re-living those moments again.
01:55And equally, I've been really enjoying some modern seriesers, such as Jack Ryan and Reacher.
02:01Best Dream Impatience at the moment.
02:04It's a crowd series what gets you thinking, and you're bringing the serval doing with it.
02:10Another good binge series is Landman.
02:12I think it's on Paramount Plus, and it's really, really binge-worthy.
02:18I do love Science, A New Scientist, and there's a fabulous book called The Future is Predictable
02:23by Tom Tilvers, all about maths, and it's fun, even though it's maths.
02:27I think far too many people want to look at the American shows and go,
02:30let's go watch all the American shows.
02:31It's like, have a look at some of the English ones.
02:33Some of the best writers ever are English writers of shows that are coming out or out now.
02:38I probably would encourage people to watch less TV.
02:41That's what I would do, even though this is going to be going out on TV.
02:44I think over the Christmas period, I tend to read books that are all very similar.
02:50They tend to be thrillers.
02:51I'm waiting on the new Jack Reacher book coming out.
02:55And there's Mylan Brandor as well, is another series that I follow.
02:59I hope.
