09:37Today, I'm meeting up with my friend Anita for the first time in person.
09:48She reached out to me on social media because she has a daughter a few years older than
09:52Balin that has autism and Tourette syndrome.

10:05But I think what Anita really wanted was some connection from another parent that is dealing
10:10with some of the same issues that she's dealing with.
10:13Out of all kind of like the requests and DMs I get because people know that Balin being
10:18on social media and they just know that she's my daughter, you're honestly the only one
10:23that I reach back out to.
10:27It's a blessing for me.
10:29So I reached out to Julie through social media because Balin experiences some of the same
10:35tics, the severe tics that my daughter Sophia has.
10:39So I felt like Julie might be able to help me answer some questions that my daughter could
10:43not because she can't give you details.
10:46She's not nonverbal, but she can communicate to me everything.
10:50She's definitely more complex than Balin.
10:52Yeah.
10:53Because I know that she has autism and stuff like that too.
10:55But you feel like the Tourette is really prominent at this point.
10:59I feel like the Tourette is kind of ruling her life right now.

11:03Sophia was officially diagnosed with Tourette at 16 years old.
11:08Her tics were not as severe in the beginning, but she's 25 years old now.
11:13And she's in a helmet 24 hours a day to protect her eyesight and to protect her head.
11:20When you, um, I'm sorry.

11:23I'm sorry.
11:24To see her beat at her face every day and punch herself in the jaw.
11:37Yeah.
11:39As Balin says, Tourette looks different on everybody.
11:42So, the emotional and physical toll on Anitta, specifically because the tourette is so self-harming.
11:51my heart just actually hurts I don't know how you do it but it's what I would
11:58do a million times over and over again until we find whatever it is it's gonna
12:03make her have a better quality of life there's no other option right there's
12:08there's just no other option I wouldn't have ever thought five or six years ago
12:12that we'd be preparing to like walk Balin down the aisle I know never it's
12:18definitely a different case than Balin but I know that feeling of helplessness
12:22and I want nothing more than for Anita to stay hopeful that there will be just
12:28that one person that has some idea of something that could help Sophia I'm
12:33always always have my nose in a book you know something just trying to look for
12:38anything that I think that might be helpful like the next thing yes the next
12:41thing you remember the link I sent you on the device the new pulse yeah you wear on
12:47your wrist or whatever it is yeah yeah yes Balin's actually heard of it I read an
12:53article about this device being in development in the UK and so I reached
12:58out to the company to ask for more information about this device from what
13:03I understand stimulates the median nerve goes up to the brain kind of like deep
13:07brain stimulation but not deep brain stimulation yes not invasive I think this
13:12device could be revolutionary because it's not conventional when you have DBS you
13:17have actual wires that are connected and if you're a self-injurious ticker
13:21Tourette patient there is that chance that you are gonna pull and prod so this
13:26device that sits no differently on your hand like a watch seems so promising to me
13:31for that reason I could be life-changing for Tourette in general honestly I think you
13:36should explore it even though new pulse is not even available in the US I feel
13:44like that would be a great time to get a hold of this team because even though
13:48Balin's doing a great job forging her path into the world this device could
13:53potentially make her everyday experiences easier possibly
13:59tell me baby if I'm all that you desire what's your rain and fire to get you back to me

16:33adjusted to the new lifestyle and we get into a rhythm then we can get into the lab and maybe start cooking

18:21is on me for everything to just go correctly I have no idea what I'm doing it's going south already
