00:00I think all around the world, in every region, companies are adopting AI faster than anyone is able to understand the risks.
00:08That doesn't mean we shouldn't adopt AI and find very important ways to use it,
00:13but there are definitely techniques that we use when we're working with Fortune 500 companies to set up safeguards in advance.
00:21So the question is, what are the biggest risks? Regulatory is one of them.
00:25We're facing a global patchwork of regulation.
00:27The other is liability.
00:30So even in countries like my own, where there's less regulation, there's litigation that comes and fills in the gap.
00:37I would say safety, accuracy, trust, intellectual property, and cybersecurity are really the key drivers of having reliable AI.
00:47So if we focus on those areas and we put controls in advance, we can actually help companies innovate.
00:53So responsible AI is not the enemy of return on investment.
00:58It's an accelerator for return on investment.
01:00If you point the company in the right direction, it can go much faster.
01:04In addition to my role as chair of AI at DLA Piper, I'm also a senior consultant to the United Nations on parliamentary engagement on artificial intelligence.
01:14So that work allows me really to travel the world and see different ways that countries are approaching regulation of AI from very, very hands-off to lots of deep sectoral regulation like healthcare regulation, life sciences, and medical device regulation.
01:31I think the Gulf states and the region has a real opportunity because while some parts of the world have gone very heavy into regulation and others have announced that they're going to take a hands-off approach,
01:44I think the Gulf states have been very thoughtful in saying let's design agile, new regulations for artificial intelligence that really allow innovation.
01:54So I think there is an opportunity to chart a middle course.
01:57I really enjoy the chance to talk to regulators and government officials from the Gulf states
02:04because I think there's a real interest in how do we get the regulation of AI, especially in very important areas like healthcare right.
