00:00Thank you so much for watching.
00:30Thank you so much for watching.
01:00And today, we have someone who started as a student with an idea and turned it into platforms that help thousands of learners and teachers.
01:11I'm DJ Moises.
01:12Joining us is the mind behind Code Jam and Grade Jam.
01:18Jamar Jude Maranga, a remarkable young innovator of platforms that are transforming the way students learn coding and teachers manage their classes.
01:28So, Jude, welcome to the show.
01:30Thanks, DJ, for having me here.
01:32Very excited.
01:33Yes, and maybe you can greet your fans.
01:37Shout out to my fans out there.
01:41So, for the non-fans, after greeting the fans, so for people who do not know you well, how would you normally describe yourself?
01:50Okay.
01:50So, again, my name is Jude in Cebu.
01:55And basically, my background is in computer science.
01:59And when I graduated, I decided to pursue the path of entrepreneurship.
02:05So, I'd say I'm an entrepreneur.
02:07Technopreneur.
02:08Technopreneur.
02:08So, when was that moment in your life when you realized that I can create something useful for people?
02:16Yeah.
02:16So, okay, quick back story.
02:19Ever since high school, I've always had that feeling of wanting to start something on my own, not to go through the employment route.
02:27And when I went to college, that feeling sort of intensified when our dean, you know her, Mom Cherry, Mom Cherry Lynn Santa Romana.
02:40You can say hi to her.
02:41Hi, Mom Cherry.
02:41Hi, Mom Dean.
02:42We call her Mom Dean.
02:43So, in one of her classes, I think I was second year college that time, she told me, because I was the top of the class, I'm good.
02:54Was?
02:56Okay, continue, continue.
02:57So, she told me na, ito si Maranga, maka-hired na ito ngayon eh, pero I don't think he will survive.
03:05So, that was very eye-opening for me because I tend to question things a lot, my God.
03:15I tend to challenge kung onsa ang mga common rules, etc.
03:20And so, at that time, I realized na, I wanted to, when I graduate, I wanted to do my own thing.
03:27And so, actually, even before I graduated, second year, third year college pa lang, I started doing freelancing na.
03:37So, what I did is, I formed a team of freelancers na all students pod.
03:42So, it was a sort of a mini freelancing company.
03:46The name was CodeAccessPH.
03:49So, we were a team of freelancers.
03:51We were able to serve over 100 clients, both local and international, while we were all still students.
03:57And so, during fourth year college, time came na it was during our thesis project, not thesis days.
04:05Because that was when the idea of CodeChamp came to be.
04:09So, CodeChamp was my college thesis project back then.
04:13And when I graduated, I decided to turn it into a startup.
04:16Okay, anyway, from my side, I have experience na doing business from the freelancing journey.
04:25I was able to do the tech side as well as the business side, sa sales, sa marketing.
04:30And so, I decided to apply those skills to CodeChamp.
04:35So, that was the journey.
04:36And I hope our viewers were able to capture that because I think at least for your generation,
04:42more and more are engaging into entrepreneurship.
04:45Because from my generation, a lot of us were encouraged or inspired to be employees.
04:53Yes.
04:54To be successful at being an employee, but not necessarily to succeed as an employer, which is now what you're doing.
05:02But before we get into that part, are you the night owl kind of coder or are you the morning kind of coder?
05:12So, I'd say I'm the night owl.
05:13So, before, when we were freelancing pa during college, what I do is, I prefer to, so what I do is, I'll sleep, siguro mga 6 to 8 p.m.
05:26And then, what I do is, I do overnight coding.
05:30So, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. or even onwards.
05:35And then, I prefer to do it because it's very silent.
05:38So, I can focus.
05:40But eventually, it's not sustainable health-wise, right?
05:45Very stressful.
05:46I used to drink a lot of energy drinks.
05:49Very unhealthy.
05:50And so, and also in terms of meeting with the team, it's hard to do, to be a night owl or night person because the teams, the team members are not night owls.
06:01So, I had to adjust that.
06:02But, I'm not a super early morning person.
06:06Sato lang.
06:07You highlighted earlier that you were on top of the class.
06:11You mentioned earlier that you were on top of the class.
06:13But were you always an achiever?
06:15During college.
06:16During college.
06:17How about when you were younger?
06:20No, no.
06:21Sato lang.
06:21Average.
06:22So, before, mangod, before college, wala ko kaibao kung unsag yun ang akong ganahan sa life ba.
06:29But when I went to college, that's when I met the true love of my life, dude, which is programming.
06:40I thought this is a Valentine's special, no?
06:42But, sige, continue.
06:44So, I love programming very much.
06:46And every after class, I would solve programming problems that weren't required by our teachers.
06:53And so, consistently, dude, from first year to fourth year, I was the top one computer science student all throughout.
07:01And when I graduated sa college, that was the first time that I graduated as class valedictorian.
07:05Because, again, it was my passion.
07:09And I found it very easy to do.
07:12Dali siya painful for me to do academics.
07:15Most especially the major.
07:16The minor medyo, and medyo challenging.
07:18But, the major subjects.
07:21To the point na kanang, if sometimes, di ba, naiklas suspension kayo, mag-joke man na ang mga people na,
07:28ay, salamat, ay, kanang, ay, kanang, ay, kanang, huwoy, klase, huwoy, ma-learn.
07:33And so, joke raman na nila.
07:34Pero, in my case, di ko siya joke.
07:37So, like, truthfully, magsakit niya ko every time na makancel ang classes,
07:42most especially on major subjects.
07:44So, this is not part of the question that I wanted to ask.
07:47So, for the sake of our viewers, ba, at least for your experience,
07:50what advice, no, or tips you can give them in terms of choosing the right, how do you call that?
07:57Program?
07:58Kanang sa senior high pa lang.
08:00The right strand.
08:01Strand, no?
08:01And eventually, the right course in college.
08:04Okay.
08:05So, I was, I would say, I was one of the lucky ones na, when I went to college,
08:13ako napili, which is computer science, is something I deeply love, good.
08:16A lot of people don't have that privilege, no?
08:19Na, koan?
08:20Or, in my case, what really helped me was my father, akong papa.
08:24When I was still fourth year high school, I can recall na he helped me create this decision matrix pa.
08:32Wow.
08:32Engineer, engineer, di ba?
08:34So, decision matrix na naadad to ang possible programs.
08:39So, computer science, one of the programs I would remember was computer engineering,
08:45and the other one was civil engineering.
08:47Actually, I almost took civil engineering.
08:49But, unfortunately, wala kay.
08:51My best friend is civil engineering, and I found it na kanang di siya,
08:55di siya lingaw for me.
08:56But, basically, what I would recommend or advise is,
09:00sa high school pala, as early as high school,
09:02na they should try exploring as many things as possible.
09:06So, for example, if na yung opportunity to volunteer somewhere,
09:10as a tech community, for example, they could do that para makita nilang world ba.
09:15And, as early as kanang high school,
09:18sa they should start kanang reading na mga sample stories,
09:23or sample kanang mga life,
09:24looking at sample life sa other people who want to be kanang in different fields.
09:31So, for example, sa akong sister,
09:33akong sister is still senior high,
09:36and I advise her to,
09:38kanang tanawa ni siya na vlogger,
09:40kanang vet siya na vlogger ba,
09:43I advise her to take a look at her,
09:45para makita niya ang life sa vet,
09:47kung if that's something that she really wants to do ba, gyan.
09:50So, basically, start exploring as early as possible.
09:54Hindi li lang magsigay o games sa high school, di ba?
09:57Sa high school, mga manag-games,
09:59laag,
09:59exploring as early as possible.
10:01Pwede mag-develop o games?
10:03Pwede, pwede.
10:04That would be a great way to explore.
10:07But, anyhow, if our viewers can recall,
10:10last week, we guested Brittany, no?
10:12Almasin, and she was the number five
10:14in the NLE
10:17for the whole Philippines.
10:20And she highlighted fundamentals.
10:22She also highlighted study habits.
10:24I think this is a great addition.
10:26It's also important to be able to choose
10:29the right course.
10:31Because you can
10:33easily excel at something that,
10:36number one, you're good at it,
10:37and second, you also like it.
10:39It's not painful.
10:41It's not painful.
10:42Mga nga mag-uol ka kung may klase.
10:43Oh, mag-uol ka.
10:45Okay.
10:45Anyway,
10:46so let's now dive into Code Cham.
10:49So, this is your thesis project.
10:52But what was your lightbulb moment?
10:54Okay.
10:55So,
10:57katong time na,
10:58I was still third-year college.
11:00I was doing the freelancing thing.
11:02At first,
11:02ako ratuosa.
11:03And then,
11:04all of a sudden,
11:05nidaghan ang projects.
11:07And so,
11:07what I did is,
11:08I asked my schoolmates,
11:10my classmates,
11:12kung interested ba sa sila.
11:14Open-minded ba sila?
11:15Open-minded ka ba?
11:18Open-minded man sila.
11:19And so,
11:20what I did is,
11:21I mentored them.
11:22I guided them.
11:23This is what you should learn.
11:26Study this.
11:27Take a look at this YouTube tutorials.
11:29And then,
11:30afterwards,
11:30they were able to get the projects
11:32and they were able to start earning.
11:34And so,
11:35that was really the,
11:37my personal motivation ba?
11:38I wanted,
11:40nakita na ko ang beauty and power of programming.
11:42You don't need to graduate.
11:44Although,
11:45wala ko nag-advise na mo drop out.
11:47But,
11:48essentially,
11:48you just need a laptop
11:49and an internet connection.
11:51And you could start earning na.
11:53Earning dollars.
11:54Because online siya, no?
11:56And so,
11:57that was the
11:58motivation of CodeCharm.
12:01Ang akong
12:02githink at o na time was,
12:05if makahelp ko sa other people
12:06learn programming,
12:08it would significantly change their lives.
12:11And,
12:11again,
12:12based na siya sa akong personal experience,
12:14helping my teammates sa
12:15CodeAccess PH.
12:17And,
12:18there's the part that I also want
12:21our viewers to capture
12:22because
12:22there are also,
12:23well,
12:24there are those who can
12:25and should finish
12:26a degree.
12:27Yes.
12:27but there are also those
12:29for so many reasons
12:30they cannot.
12:31But,
12:31there are micro-credentials
12:33that they can take online.
12:36That's right.
12:36Even YouTube.
12:38Yeah.
12:38They can learn from YouTube
12:39for them to
12:40do something
12:41that's meaningful
12:42and useful.
12:44So,
12:44Siki,
12:45going back to
12:45CodeCharm,
12:46so,
12:47where,
12:48did you also encounter
12:49people who doubted the concept
12:51and how did you get past
12:53that stage?
12:55Doubted the concept
12:57when we were still starting
13:00or when I was still starting,
13:02at that time,
13:02I didn't receive any doubts yet.
13:06I think because
13:07primarily,
13:09ang nakaibaw sa CodeCharm
13:10at that time was
13:11Ma'am Jerry.
13:12Ma'am Jerry was my thesis advisor,
13:14di ba?
13:15And,
13:15and I was,
13:17the other people
13:18who know about CodeCharm
13:20or knew about CodeCharm
13:21was,
13:21or were people from
13:22my alma mater,
13:24Cebu Institute of Technology University.
13:26And all of them were supportive
13:27because
13:28they
13:29really felt the pain
13:31of
13:32checking programming activities.
13:35And so,
13:36at the start,
13:38wala kayo yung doubt,
13:39but then,
13:41as we
13:41grow
13:42and grow
13:43and grow,
13:44of course,
13:44anamag yun,
13:45anamag yun,
13:46nag yung mga people
13:47who doubted na,
13:48is this something
13:48bagayun na needed?
13:50Is this something
13:50that's,
13:51that's,
13:52is still fit
13:53for the future
13:53or for the long run?
13:55So,
13:55did you also
13:56imagine
13:57back then
13:58that
13:59this
14:00thesis project
14:01will eventually
14:02grow beyond
14:04your college
14:05or your
14:05university?
14:07Wala yun,
14:07wala yun.
14:08So,
14:08CodeCharm was my,
14:10basically,
14:11my first
14:11startup.
14:12I didn't know
14:14how to do
14:14startups yet,
14:15although I know
14:16how to do
14:16the servicing
14:17side,
14:18making websites
14:19for other people,
14:20making systems.
14:21But in terms of
14:22creating our
14:23own product,
14:24that was the,
14:25that's the
14:26first time again.
14:27And so,
14:28I didn't,
14:28I can't imagine
14:29possible siya
14:31mag-go outside
14:32sa Cebu
14:33in the first
14:34place.
14:34I thought na
14:35CIT,
14:36CIT will use
14:37my alma mater,
14:39but the other
14:40universities will use
14:41kay mga from Cebu
14:42or pod.
14:43But I didn't imagine
14:44that it would go
14:44nationwide.
14:45So,
14:46hindi ko ka-visualize
14:46at that time
14:47because
14:48there were not
14:49so many
14:50startups
14:51here in Cebu
14:52at that time.
14:53and even
14:56sa akong
14:57entire batch
14:58or sa batch
14:59from,
15:00same batch
15:01na ko
15:01from other
15:01schools,
15:02walang yung
15:02nag-pursue
15:03startup.
15:04So,
15:04it's something
15:04really new
15:06but I still
15:07push it,
15:08push through
15:08anyway.
15:09So,
15:10you founded
15:10the company
15:11immediately
15:12after college?
15:13Yes.
15:14And how old
15:15were you
15:16at that time?
15:18I think
15:19I was 21.
15:2021,
15:21yeah,
15:2121 years old.
15:22And never
15:22looked back.
15:23since then.
15:24Yes.
15:25Sige.
15:25So,
15:26for viewers
15:26who have not
15:27used
15:28CodeChamp,
15:30how does it work?
15:31Okay.
15:32So,
15:32to give you
15:33some context,
15:34let's,
15:36to give you
15:36some context,
15:37programming.
15:40Programming
15:40essentially means
15:41giving instructions
15:43to a computer
15:44na something
15:46niya na ma-understand
15:46and ma-interpret
15:47and ma-unang
15:49output is
15:50ang applications
15:50that we see
15:51right now.
15:52So,
15:52the apps
15:52that you use,
15:53Facebook,
15:54Gmail,
15:56et cetera,
15:57those were
15:57written
15:59through programming.
16:01Now,
16:02in a
16:02class,
16:03in a programming
16:03class at schools,
16:05students are
16:05asked to write
16:06their own
16:07programs.
16:07They need to
16:08make their
16:08own programs.
16:10And
16:10teachers
16:11basically have
16:12to open
16:13those programs
16:14one by one
16:14and they have
16:15to check
16:15them one by
16:15one.
16:16And it's
16:16a very tedious
16:17process.
16:19And so,
16:20basically,
16:21naay dilemma
16:22ang mga
16:22teachers.
16:24The dilemma
16:25for the
16:25teachers is
16:26they could
16:27give more
16:28programming
16:28exercises
16:29to the
16:29students
16:30para the
16:30students
16:30would learn
16:31more,
16:31but
16:32burden siya
16:33sa checking.
16:34On the
16:35other hand,
16:35they could
16:36give less
16:36programming
16:37exercises
16:38para di siya
16:39burden silang
16:39checking,
16:39but the
16:40students
16:41would not
16:41learn as
16:41much.
16:43And so,
16:43that's where
16:44CodeChamp
16:44comes in.
16:46In CodeChamp
16:46ang god,
16:47everything is
16:47automatically
16:48checked.
16:49So,
16:49magmeg ang
16:49student
16:50sellang
16:50programs
16:50in CodeChamp
16:51and everything
16:52is automatically
16:53checked.
16:54And so,
16:54it's very
16:55efficient.
16:55The teachers
16:55could give
16:56so many
16:56programming
16:57exercises
16:57to the
16:58students
16:58and they
17:00wouldn't
17:00need to
17:01worry about
17:02the
17:02checking.
17:03And I
17:05think it's
17:05also a good
17:06mindset for
17:07would-be
17:08entrepreneurs
17:09who are
17:09watching
17:10because you
17:11also
17:11highlighted
17:12a concept
17:12of being
17:13able to
17:14quickly spot
17:15a problem
17:16or a
17:17pain point.
17:18And instead
17:19of
17:20focusing
17:21or pouring
17:22energy
17:22on the
17:23problem,
17:24it's better
17:25to shift
17:26the mindset
17:26on how
17:27you can
17:28solution it
17:29and earn
17:31in the
17:32process.
17:32Correct,
17:33correct.
17:33Sige.
17:34So,
17:35what are
17:38the skills
17:39that
17:40our viewers
17:41should need
17:43to have
17:43for them
17:44to be able
17:45to succeed
17:46at coding?
17:48Coding?
17:49Coding,
17:50not
17:50entrepreneurship.
17:51Coding?
17:51Coding,
17:51yes.
17:52Coding,
17:53basically,
17:54the only
17:55secret
17:56is to
17:57keep on
17:58solving
17:58programming
17:59problems
17:59over and
18:00over again.
18:01So,
18:02again,
18:02when I was
18:02in first
18:03year college,
18:03actually,
18:04until second
18:04year college,
18:05every after
18:06class,
18:06at night,
18:07I used
18:07to solve
18:08at least
18:08one
18:08programming
18:09problem
18:09every day,
18:10even weekends,
18:11even holidays,
18:12just one
18:12programming
18:12problem.
18:13Just like
18:14any skill,
18:15practice and
18:16repetition
18:16are the secret.
18:18So,
18:18it's
18:19simple,
18:21but it's
18:23hard to do.
18:24So,
18:24it's basically
18:26just practice.
18:27And that's
18:27why in
18:27CodeChamp,
18:28again,
18:29since teachers
18:29are not burdened
18:30now with
18:30programming
18:31exercises,
18:32they could
18:32give so many
18:33programming
18:33exercises
18:34and encourage
18:35your students
18:35to keep
18:35on solving
18:36because it
18:37builds
18:37problem-solving
18:38skills,
18:39which is
18:40very important,
18:40most especially
18:41in this age
18:41of AI.
18:43And then,
18:43the other
18:44thing also
18:45that I'm
18:45reminded
18:46with your
18:47answer,
18:47because there's
18:48this book,
18:49Outliers,
18:50by Gladwell,
18:52and it
18:52explains the
18:53importance of
18:5410,000 hours.
18:56And among
18:56the case
18:58studies that
18:59he used
19:00was Bill
19:01Gates.
19:02Before he
19:02became
19:03Bill Gates,
19:04he had
19:05a lot
19:06of hours
19:07also spent
19:08working on
19:10gadgets
19:10and computers.
19:12So,
19:13I think
19:13you just
19:13highlighted
19:14also the
19:15importance
19:15of practice
19:17to be
19:18very good
19:18at coding.
19:19So,
19:20now,
19:20from helping
19:20students
19:21learn better
19:23with CodeChamp,
19:24you have
19:26moved
19:26into
19:27helping
19:28teachers
19:28save
19:29hours
19:30grading
19:31exams
19:31with
19:32grade
19:33CHAM.
19:33So,
19:34I see
19:34the
19:35pattern
19:35of
19:35CHAMs.
19:36So,
19:36before I
19:36move
19:36forward,
19:37what's
19:37with
19:37CHAM?
19:40A lot
19:41of people
19:41actually
19:46ask that,
19:47what's
19:47CHAM?
19:48So,
19:48CHAM,
19:49if you
19:49Google it,
19:50it's
19:50actually
19:50a
19:50close
19:50friend.
19:52And so,
19:52that's
19:53the idea.
19:54CodeChamp
19:54is a
19:55close
19:55friend
19:55in
19:55learning
19:56coding
19:56or
19:57programming.
19:58GradeChamp
19:58is a
19:59close
19:59friend
19:59in helping
20:00you
20:00with
20:00grading.
20:01So,
20:02that's
20:02the
20:02background
20:04behind
20:04CHAM.
20:05So,
20:05what inspired
20:05you to
20:06create
20:06the
20:07platform
20:07GradeChamp?
20:09Yes.
20:09So,
20:10actually,
20:11inspiration
20:11is funny
20:13because it
20:13comes
20:14at any
20:15random
20:15time.
20:16It's not
20:18something
20:19that you
20:20focus
20:20and then
20:21all of
20:22a sudden
20:22you
20:22get it.
20:23So,
20:24in the
20:24case
20:24of
20:24GradeChamp,
20:25actually,
20:25I was
20:26riding
20:26my
20:26motorcycle
20:26on my
20:27way
20:28to
20:28each
20:28show
20:28in
20:30Punta.
20:33So,
20:33I love
20:38that.
20:39And then,
20:40all of
20:40a sudden,
20:41I think
20:41that
20:42teachers,
20:44they have
20:45stacks of
20:45papers
20:46that
20:46you can
20:47buy
20:47at
20:47the
20:48desk.
20:49Because
20:49before,
20:50I used
20:50to be
20:50a part-time
20:51teacher
20:51or faculty
20:52in my
20:53alma mater.
20:54And I
20:55could
20:55always
20:56remember
20:56that
20:57my
20:57co-faculty
20:58members,
20:58they would
20:58make papers
20:59and every
21:00time they
21:00would go
21:00to the
21:00faculty
21:01room,
21:01they would
21:01say,
21:02they would
21:02place the
21:03papers and
21:03they would
21:03say,
21:04I need
21:05check.
21:06And
21:06ever since
21:10the time
21:12of my
21:12lola,
21:13when lola
21:13was a
21:13deaf-ed
21:14teacher,
21:15checking
21:16papers
21:16has always
21:17been
21:18manual and
21:18it's been
21:19accepted as
21:19a painful,
21:21sad
21:21reality.
21:22If you
21:23want to
21:23be a
21:24teacher,
21:25suffering
21:25that you
21:26have to
21:26undergo.
21:27But
21:28then,
21:28we
21:30dared to
21:31question
21:31that.
21:32We
21:32asked,
21:33does it
21:33have to
21:34be this
21:34way?
21:35So,
21:36essentially,
21:37with the
21:38advent of
21:39AI,
21:40we
21:40thought
21:40that now
21:41it's
21:42possible
21:42to
21:43solve
21:43that
21:44long-standing
21:45suffering
21:45with AI.
21:47And
21:48so,
21:49that's
21:50when the
21:50idea of
21:51GradeJump
21:51came to
21:51be,
21:52that
21:52the
21:53papers
21:54automatically
21:54check
21:54to
21:54students.
21:56So,
21:56again,
21:57there's
21:57a pain
21:58point,
21:58there's
21:58suffering,
21:59and
21:59does it
22:00always
22:01have to
22:01be
22:01this
22:02way?
22:02And
22:03then,
22:04you
22:04become
22:04an
22:04entrepreneur.
22:06Again,
22:06the second
22:07time around.
22:08So,
22:08how does
22:09GradeJump
22:10actually work?
22:10Can you
22:11show our
22:11viewers?
22:12Yes,
22:13okay.
22:13So,
22:15in here,
22:16so,
22:17this is our
22:17website,
22:18GradeJump.com.
22:20The way
22:21it works
22:21is,
22:22in a nutshell,
22:23the teacher
22:23will have to
22:24input their
22:25questions on
22:25the GradeJump
22:26platform.
22:27So,
22:27similar to
22:28Google Forms
22:29where they
22:29input the
22:30questions,
22:31and then they
22:31print and
22:32distribute
22:32GradeJump
22:33answer sheets.
22:34So,
22:35there's a
22:35PDF that
22:36they need
22:36to print
22:37on a
22:37bond
22:37paper or
22:38newsprint,
22:38and then
22:39they scan
22:39the answer
22:40sheets,
22:41either using
22:41the
22:41GradeJump
22:42mobile
22:42scanner or
22:43this physical
22:44scanner that
22:45we provide
22:45to the
22:46schools.
22:48So,
22:48GradeJump
22:48can check
22:49so many
22:50things.
22:50It can
22:51check
22:51problem-solving
22:52solutions,
22:53okay,
22:54it can
22:54check
22:55essays,
22:56it can
22:57check
22:57enumeration,
22:58identification,
23:00and even
23:01multiple
23:01choice.
23:02So,
23:02before,
23:04existing
23:04solutions can
23:05only check
23:06multiple
23:06choice.
23:07So,
23:07shading,
23:08shading,
23:08something
23:09like this,
23:10okay.
23:11But now,
23:11with GradeJump,
23:13it can
23:13check even
23:14essays.
23:15So,
23:15I actually
23:15have some
23:15sample here.
23:17These are
23:17the essay
23:19answers of
23:20some sample
23:21students.
23:21You can see
23:22now it's
23:22handwritten,
23:23right?
23:24It's handwritten
23:25here.
23:27And so,
23:29basically,
23:30we just need
23:30to scan
23:30this,
23:31and we
23:31actually did
23:32in advance,
23:33and then
23:33all of the
23:34results,
23:35everything is
23:35checked
23:36here in
23:36the
23:36system.
23:38So,
23:38this is
23:38the
23:38view of
23:39the
23:39teacher.
23:41If we
23:41click this
23:41one,
23:42we could
23:43see the
23:44scores of
23:45the
23:45students.
23:46Okay.
23:47So,
23:48in here,
23:48we could
23:49see their
23:50scores there.
23:51This is the
23:52essay question
23:53that we
23:54added.
23:55So,
23:56explain why
23:57community-based
23:58flood control
23:59strategies are
24:00important,
24:00and give one
24:01example of how
24:02a community
24:02can help
24:03reduce flood
24:04risk.
24:04Answer in
24:05three to
24:05five sentences.
24:07And for
24:07the system,
24:08for GradeChem
24:08to check the
24:09essay questions,
24:10the teacher
24:11needs to set
24:12the rubrics
24:12because at the
24:13end of the
24:13day,
24:13GradeChem is
24:14just a
24:14grading
24:14assistant.
24:15It will
24:16check based
24:16on how
24:17the teacher
24:18wants the
24:19system to
24:19check their
24:20students'
24:20answer.
24:21So,
24:21there's a
24:21set of
24:22rubrics
24:22here,
24:23and it's
24:24the teacher
24:24who sets
24:25these rubrics.
24:26So,
24:26clarity of
24:27explanation,
24:28relevance and
24:29specificity of
24:29example,
24:30et cetera.
24:31So,
24:31now,
24:32if we
24:32view the
24:33results
24:33here,
24:34okay,
24:35and then
24:36we click,
24:37for example,
24:37this one,
24:38the one with
24:38the lowest
24:39score,
24:39Alex Reyes.
24:41So,
24:41if we click
24:42this one,
24:43this is
24:44his answer.
24:46Okay?
24:47So,
24:48flooding happens
24:49because of
24:50heavy rain,
24:50and people in
24:51the community
24:51cannot really
24:52change that.
24:53They don't
24:53have much
24:54control over
24:54what happens.
24:56Cleaning or
24:56organizing activities
24:57will not make
24:58a big difference.
24:59Now,
25:00since his answer
25:00didn't really
25:01achieve or
25:03met what
25:04was asked,
25:05then here
25:05in the
25:06clarity of
25:06explanation,
25:07zero over
25:07five yung
25:08score.
25:09Here in the
25:09others,
25:10zero as
25:10well.
25:10But if you
25:11can see
25:11writing quality
25:12and grammar,
25:13na siya
25:14yung score
25:14because he
25:15was at least
25:15to some
25:16extent,
25:16his score,
25:17or his
25:18response,
25:18this one,
25:20exhibits good
25:21writing quality
25:22with very few
25:22grammatical
25:23spelling or
25:24punctuation
25:24errors.
25:24So,
25:25you can
25:25see
25:26it's
25:27really
25:27graded
25:27objectively
25:28based on
25:29a set
25:29of
25:29rubrics.
25:30It's not
25:30feel-feel
25:32sometimes
25:32there's
25:33bias as
25:33a teacher
25:34and
25:35sometimes
25:35if
25:36stress
25:36because
25:36it's
25:37score
25:37etc.
25:38But in
25:40here,
25:41clear
25:41and so
25:42when the
25:42students
25:43will see
25:43their
25:43scores,
25:43they will
25:44not ask
25:44sir,
25:45so the
25:48teachers
25:48will just
25:48show this
25:49one and
25:49you'll
25:50see the
25:50score
25:51because of
25:52this.
25:53Here,
25:53for example,
25:53Juan de la Cruz,
25:55almost perfect,
25:57answer,
25:58etc.
25:58Now,
25:59grade jump
25:59is actually
26:00flexible so
26:01the teacher
26:02can always
26:02override the
26:03score.
26:04So,
26:04they could
26:04click this
26:05pencil icon
26:05here and
26:07they could
26:07set the
26:08score.
26:08For example,
26:09if for the
26:09teacher,
26:10actually perfect
26:11they could
26:12just click
26:12this one and
26:13then click
26:14the check
26:15button.
26:16So,
26:16essentially,
26:16that's
26:17grade jump.
26:18After
26:18everything is
26:19scanned,
26:192 to 3
26:19minutes lang
26:20ang i-wait
26:20ni teacher
26:21and all
26:21of the
26:22results can
26:22be seen
26:23here.
26:23Very
26:24efficient.
26:25So,
26:25this is
26:25really
26:26like a
26:26grading
26:27assistant.
26:30Because the
26:31teacher can
26:31still override
26:32in case the
26:33teacher does
26:34not agree
26:34with the
26:35grade.
26:35Yes,
26:36yes.
26:36Which is
26:37sometimes
26:37it will
26:38happen
26:38because at
26:39the end
26:39of the
26:39day,
26:40AI is
26:41just
26:42an
26:43assistant.
26:44And
26:44sometimes AI
26:45is not
26:45accurate.
26:50right
26:51right now
26:51the
26:51accuracy
26:51of
26:52AI
26:52in
26:52grade
26:53champ
26:53is
26:53at
26:5395%.
26:54So,
26:55sometimes
26:55it will
26:56be
26:56clear to
27:01correct
27:02output.
27:04And so,
27:04that's why
27:05there's
27:05flexibility
27:05for the
27:06teacher
27:06to override.
27:07Just in
27:07case the
27:085%
27:08happens.
27:09Yes,
27:09yes,
27:09correct.
27:10So,
27:11in terms
27:11of the
27:11development
27:12of
27:13grade
27:14champ,
27:14what's
27:15the
27:16hardest
27:16part
27:17of
27:17this
27:17compared
27:18to
27:18when
27:18you
27:19were
27:19a
27:20student
27:20developing
27:22Codejam?
27:24The
27:24hardest
27:25part
27:25is
27:26really
27:27the
27:27in
27:28our
27:28case,
27:29I
27:29think
27:30it
27:30was
27:30really
27:30more
27:31on
27:31the
27:32dapat
27:33comfortable
27:34me
27:35to
27:35accept
27:36the
27:36criticisms
27:38because
27:39second
27:40first
27:42time
27:42around
27:42Codejam,
27:43we
27:43were
27:43moving
27:44very
27:44slow.
27:45Slow
27:45in the
27:46sense
27:46na
27:46it
27:48would
27:48take
27:48us
27:49months
27:49before
27:49we
27:50could
27:50release
27:50something
27:51and
27:51then
27:51we
27:51would
27:51ask
27:52feedback
27:52sa
27:52users
27:53but
27:53in
27:53the
27:53case

27:54grade
27:54jump
27:54we
27:54were
27:54moving
27:55very
27:55fast.
27:56So,
27:57after
27:57the
27:57idea
27:58of
27:58grade
27:58jump
27:59what
27:59I
27:59did
27:59is
27:59I
28:00immediately
28:00went

28:01Cherry
28:02I

28:14teachers
28:14that's
28:15the same
28:15feedback
28:16and so
28:17immediately
28:17the next
28:17week
28:18what we
28:19did
28:19is
28:20launch

28:34we

28:45again
28:45with
28:45another
28:45version
28:46so
28:46we
28:46are

29:22I think
29:22and I think
29:23that's one of the
29:23lessons
29:24or skills
29:25that you need to have
29:26as an entrepreneur
29:26you need to be
29:28willing
29:29to accept
29:30those criticisms

29:32of rejection
29:33and then do something

29:36keep moving

29:36keep moving

29:37so
29:38for
29:38let's go
29:39back to
29:40Code Jam
29:40how many
29:41schools
29:42are using
29:44this
29:44yes
29:45so it
29:45started
29:45with one
29:46school
29:46my alma mater
29:47of course
29:48it should be
29:49fortunately
29:51they're very supportive
29:52with the leadership
29:53of Sir Burns
29:54William Moore
29:54and then
29:56right now
29:56Code Jam
29:56is in
29:57114
29:58schools
29:59nationwide
29:59wow
30:01and then
30:02for
30:02Grade Jam
30:03Grade Jam
30:04is relatively
30:04young
30:05we are at

30:08yeah
30:08and
30:09growing
30:10and growing
30:11yes
30:11so
30:11Sige
30:12because
30:12I can also
30:13see that
30:14there's
30:14tremendous
30:15opportunity
30:16for
30:17this one
30:19in the
30:19context

30:26and then
30:27the other
30:27one also
30:28is in
