Transcript
00:00Hello and welcome, I'm Geeta Mohan and you're watching India Today Global where we get you all the big news of the day
00:05and how it impacts not just India but the world and the region itself.
00:10With that, we have some big news coming in at the South.
00:21Now after powerful earthquake strikes near Japan, tsunami warning has been issued in Japan.
00:27Evacuation orders have been issued. Tsunami warning has been issued for Japan's northeast coast.
00:34Two 40-centimeter tsunami waves were reported on the coast.
00:38That's the reports just coming in.
00:41This is going to be a very intense night for people in Japan, especially the administration.
00:48There was a massive earthquake.
00:51Some of the reports suggest it was a little over 7 on the Richter scale
00:55and post the earthquake strikes, there have been tsunami warnings.
00:59A reminder of what happened during the tsunami in Japan when the nuclear facilities were impacted.
01:05But what will happen now and is it going to have a major impact or something we'll have to wait and see.
01:11Those are visuals of the earthquake.
01:14You can see the entire area was shaken.
01:18Pranay Padya, my colleague, joining me for more on this.
01:21Pranay, a massive earthquake and now a tsunami warning.
01:25Absolutely, Geetha.
01:26Japan is not stranger to the seismic activity, but this is a 7.6 magnitude earthquake which jorted Japan
01:33and that to be the northernmost prefecture of Japan, Omori.
01:37People have been asked to stay away from the coast and have been asked to go to the safer places.
01:43And the tsunami warning has already been issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
01:49The around 20 inch is the prediction of the tsunami waves.
01:54As per the latest information, the visuals are clearly showing the impact.
01:59You know how massive this earthquake was.
02:017.6 is a huge magnitude.
02:03And the tsunami warning and the geodes have also been experienced in the Hokkaidu and Honshu provinces of Japan.
02:11You know that Japan has faced the earthquake and has experienced the earthquake of magnitude up to 9 in 2011 when we had the Fukushima disaster.
02:21And even before that, Japan sits on the, Japan is situated on the ring of fire in the Pacific Ocean.
02:27So, this earthquake also came in the Pacific Ocean and the tsunami warning has been issued.
02:32But we are yet to get the further information as per as the damages are concerned.
02:37Well, that's right.
02:38Like you said, 7.6 magnitude on the Richter scale, that's massive.
02:42And we do see some of the visuals and photos that are coming in of the damage that that has caused.
02:48That certainly is a matter for concern and scare.
02:51But in terms of not what the impact of the earthquake is,
02:55because Pranay, you've reported from Japan and know how resilient it is when it comes to earthquakes,
03:01but not so much when it comes to tsunamis.
03:03You're right, Gita.
03:07But as far as Japan is concerned, you have also reported there.
03:10And we have seen that, you know, how the disaster resilient infrastructure has been developed by Japan.
03:15And in the recent past also, we have seen that how earthquakes have brought to Japan.
03:20But Japan has its own resilience as well as experience.
03:23To deal with such a situation, we have seen that post-Kupishima disaster of Japan in 2011,
03:32Japan has built further more structures and, you know, they brought changes in their SOPs as well.
03:39So we are yet to get the further information that what exactly is the magnitude of damage
03:45suffered in the Omori Frog Prefecture of Japan and the other associated areas.
03:50Because these droughts were widespread, it's been experienced in the provinces of Hokkaido and Honshu as well.
03:57And this is the northernmost part of Japan.
04:01So, you know, this earthquake, you know, the epicenter of this earthquake 7.6 rictus scale earthquake was actually 50 miles, you know,
04:12east of the Omori prefecture of the coast, the epicenter was in the sea.
04:18So, therefore, there are high chances of having a tsunami wave.
04:23But the official confirmation of tsunami is not there as yet.
04:27Only the Japanese maritime agency and the Japanese, you know, the meteorological department has issued a warning.
04:34And people have been asked to stay away from the coast and people, around 1 lakh people, according to some media reports,
04:41there are around 1 lakh people are affected and they have been asked to go to safer places and go to dojo shelters.
04:47That's right.
04:48The Japanese meteorological agency is also the disaster management agencies in the areas are going to monitor through the night.
04:56Pranav Padhya, thank you so much for joining us.
04:58The U.S. released a new national security strategy which warns of Europe's civilizational erasure,
05:09downplays Russia as a U.S. threat and urges NATO to halt expansion.
05:14The Kremlin has welcomed the tone but said implementation must be monitored.
05:19Maheshwet Alala with this report.
05:22Everybody there to get to the right outcome, solution-based.
05:28We are on day 17 of phase 2.
05:33Following three days of meeting last week in Florida between Trump's special invoices T. Witkoff and Jared Kushner
05:39with the Ukrainian delegation led by Rustem Umerov, the White House released a new national security strategy.
05:46The 33-page document released by the U.S. administration suggests Europe is facing civilizational erasure
05:53and does not cast Russia as a threat to the U.S.
05:56The strategy highlights Europe's relation with Russia as deeply attenuated and Europe's regard of Russia as an existential threat.
06:06Kremlin has welcomed this strategy but says we'll monitor how this will be implemented.
06:10It even includes an acknowledgement that NATO should stop expanding. It is mentioned as well.
06:23The plan includes language against confrontation and in favor of dialogue, building good relations,
06:28just as President Putin had said.
06:30That is encouraging on the one hand, but on the other, we know what happens.
06:35When everything looks good on paper, yet what they call the deep state acts differently.
06:39That can happen.
06:40So it is essential to closely monitor how this concept will actually be implemented.
06:44As Washington softens the stand by not calling Moscow a threat, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met
06:54U.K. Prime Minister KS Chama, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Frederick Mertz in London.
07:01The leaders discussed the latest Ukraine-Russia peace plan.
07:05Earlier, Zelenskyy called the meeting between the U.S. and Ukrainian delegation constructive.
07:09Yesterday, we spoke with Stephen Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
07:17I thank them for their readiness to work together 24-7.
07:21The American representatives know the basic Ukrainian positions.
07:24The conversation was constructive, although not easy.
07:29As Trump attended the annual Kennedy Center's honours on weekend,
07:33he expressed disappointment that Zelenskyy had not read the latest proposal,
07:38though he said the Ukrainian delegation loved it.
07:42What's your next step in Russia-Ukraine talks after last week's negotiations?
07:45So we've been speaking to President Putin and we've been speaking to Ukrainian leaders,
07:51including Zelenskyy, President Zelenskyy.
07:55And I have to say that I'm a little bit disappointed that President Zelenskyy hasn't yet read the proposal.
08:01That was as of a few hours ago.
08:03His people love it, but he has it.
08:06Russia's fine with it.
08:08Earlier at a forum in Doha, U.S. President's son, Donald Trump Jr.,
08:13while replying to a question, said his father might walk away if the Russia-Ukraine war dragged on.
08:19Is your hunch that President Trump is going to walk away?
08:23I think he may.
08:25What's good about my father and what's unique about my father is you don't know what he's going to do.
08:31The fact that he's not predictable, he's not following the playbook of every clown
08:35who's, again, been a bureaucrat for decades.
08:39The U.S. national security strategy also emphasizes on strengthening economic security
08:44and geopolitical ties with India and sees it a critical partner in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
08:50The document stresses on readjustment of the U.S. military presence in the Western Hemisphere
08:57to counter migration, drug trafficking and what it describes as the rise of adversarial powers in the region
09:04based on the Monroe Doctrine, first promoted by then-U.S. President James Monroe in 1823.
09:11Maa Shweta Lala, Bureau Report, India Today.
09:13U.S. President J.D. Vance drew flag from netizens after his recent post on theft of the American dream.
09:25Vance said, and I quote,
09:26Mass migration is theft of the American dream.
09:29It has always been this way and every position paper, think tank piece and economic metric study
09:37suggesting otherwise is paid for by the people getting rich off of the old system.
09:43This led many netizens to mock the U.S. Vice President,
09:46some suggesting that he should send his wife and U.S. Second Lady and his children back to India.
09:52Ushah Vance, a lawyer married to J.D. Vance in 2014,
09:56is the first Asian American and first Hindu American Second Lady.
10:01Earlier, during a podcast interview, Vance said it was totally reasonable to give priority to neighbours
10:07who share one's race, language or skin colour.
10:10He also stated in future,
10:12the administration will try to remove as many undocumented migrants as possible.
10:20President Trump, while attending this year's Kennedy Centre Honours,
10:24brushed aside questions about his Christmas naughty list, saying it could cause trouble.
10:29He was speaking to reporters while he attended the annual Kennedy Centre Honours Awards show,
10:35the show which recognises achievements in music and in films.
10:40Trump had skipped the ceremony during his first term.
10:43This year's honorees include actor Sylvester Stallone,
10:46singers Gloria Gaynor and George Strait,
10:49rock band Kiss and actor-singer Michael Crawford.
10:52Trump later hosted actor Sylvester Stallone and other celebrities
10:56at a dinner at the White House after presenting Kennedy Centre Honours.
11:02President Trump, who is on your naughty list this year?
11:06Oh, that's a long list.
11:08I better not tell you it's not a problem out there in the world.
11:12No, we have a pretty big naughty list,
11:14but our country is doing well.
11:16We're the hottest country anywhere in the world right now.
11:20And a year ago, we were a dead country.
11:22We were a dead country that was laughed at all over the world.
11:24We're the hottest country in the world.
11:25What would be an implication?
11:26And Jesse Waters is terrific.
11:28Now, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has some tricks up his sleeve to evade ICE agents.
11:36This is a new dare.
11:37In a video message on X, Mamdani gave advice to immigrants
11:40how to evade immigration and customs enforcement.
11:45Zoran Mamdani's new era for NYC reminder
11:48comes after ICE raids made headlines in the Big Apple.
11:52At the time, about 200 protesters stood up to the authorities in Canal Street,
11:57leading to several arrests.
11:59If you encounter ICE, these are the things that every New Yorker should know.
12:04First, ICE cannot enter into private spaces like your home, school,
12:08or a private area of your workplace without a judicial warrant signed by a judge.
12:12That looks like this.
12:13If ICE does not have a judicial warrant signed by a judge,
12:21you have the right to say,
12:22I do not consent to entry,
12:23and the right to keep your door closed.
12:25Sometimes ICE will show you paperwork that looks like this
12:28and tell you that they have the right to arrest you.
12:33That is false.
12:35ICE is legally allowed to lie to you,
12:37but you have the right to remain silent.
12:39If you're being detained, you may always ask,
12:41am I free to go, repeatedly, until they answer you.
12:46Thailand has launched airstrikes along its disputed border with Cambodia
12:50after both countries accused the other
12:52of breaching a ceasefire agreement
12:54brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump.
12:57Eyewitness video released on Monday
12:59showed a huge plume of smoke rising
13:02on the Cambodian side of the border.
13:04At least one Thai soldier has been killed
13:07and eight wounded in the fresh clashes.
13:09Local residents living along the Thai border
13:11with Cambodia in Surin province
13:13took shelter in bunkers amid fresh clashes.
13:17Meanwhile, Thailand's foreign ministry said
13:19its military operations at the border with Cambodia
13:22will continue to protect the country's sovereignty
13:25and territorial integrity.
13:27Long-standing border disputes erupted
13:29into five days of combat in July
13:31that killed dozens of soldiers and civilians.
13:34U.S. President Donald Trump
13:35pushed the Southeast Asian neighbours
13:37to sign a truce agreement in October
13:39but tensions have continued to simmer.
13:46And let's now take a look at some other stories
13:48making headlines across the globe
13:51in World at a Glance.
13:52Chinese police have escorted
14:051,178 Chinese nationals
14:08suspected of telecom fraud
14:10in Myanmar's Mayanwadi area
14:12back to China via Thailand.
14:15Since the launch of a joint
14:16China-Myanmar-Thailand operation
14:18on February 20th
14:20to repatriate telecom fraud suspects
14:22more than 6,600 Chinese nationals
14:25allegedly involved in such crimes
14:27have been returned
14:29delivering what authorities
14:31described as a powerful deterrent
14:33to transnational fraud syndicates.
14:38The European Commission on Friday
14:40imposed fines totalling 120 million euros
14:43on Elon Musk's social media platform X
14:46for breaching transparency obligations
14:49in its first non-compliance decision
14:51under the Digital Services Act DSA.
14:55This marks the first time
14:56the European Union's executive arm
14:58has issued such a non-compliance ruling
15:01under the DSA
15:02which came into force in 2022.
15:06After the fine,
15:07Musk took to X
15:08to say that the EU should be abolished
15:10and sovereignty should be returned
15:12to individual countries.
15:16Military parades were organised
15:19in various Syrian cities
15:20to mark the first anniversary
15:22of Bashar al-Assad's fall.
15:24People in Aleppo, Damascus and Latakia
15:27gathered to watch the shows
15:28carrying Syrian flags and cheering.
15:31Assad flew Syria for Russia
15:32a year ago
15:33as rebels commanded
15:34by Syria's new president
15:36Ahmed al-Shara.
15:37Benin President Patrice Tellon
15:45said the government and armed forces
15:48had thwarted a coup
15:49attempted by a group of soldiers
15:50in the Western African nation
15:52vowing to punish those
15:54who carried it out.
15:55Talon's announcement came
15:56about 12 hours
15:58after gunfire first rang out
16:00in several neighbourhoods
16:01and soldiers went on state television
16:03to claim they had removed Talon from power.
16:06The attempted coup
16:07was the latest threat
16:09to democratic rule
16:10in the region
16:10where militaries have
16:12in recent years
16:13seized power
16:13in Benin neighbours
16:14Niger and Burkina Faso
16:17as well as Mali, Guinea
16:18and only last month
16:20Guinea-Bissau.
16:24President Macron was in China
16:26he went there for deals
16:27he exchanged pandas
16:29but what does this mean
16:31when it comes to
16:32the threat of tariffs
16:33by France to China?
16:35the impact of it
16:36not just for the region
16:37but also for the world
16:39and particularly for India.
16:41Watch all that and more
16:42on Statecraft.
16:50Today we're decoding
16:51something intriguing.
16:53French President Emmanuel Macron
16:54just visited China
16:56but this wasn't your typical
16:57diplomatic handshake
16:58and smile trip.
17:00This was high-stakes poker
17:01with billions of dollars
17:03on the table
17:04and the future
17:05of global trade
17:06hanging in the balance.
17:08Picture this
17:08Europe's elegant leader
17:10lands in Beijing.
17:12He's brought France's
17:13biggest CEOs with him.
17:14Airbus,
17:15BNP Paribas,
17:17Schneider Electric,
17:18the whole gang.
17:19They're hoping for deals
17:20but there's tension in the air
17:21because Macron
17:22isn't just there
17:24to make friends.
17:25He's there to deliver
17:26some hard truths.
17:27So what happened?
17:29Did China blink?
17:30Did France get what it wanted?
17:32And why should India care
17:33about any of this?
17:35Hello and welcome.
17:36You're watching Statecraft
17:37with me, Geeta Mohan.
17:47First, let's understand
17:48the problem.
17:50Europe has a massive headache
17:51and that headache
17:52has a name,
17:53trade deficit.
17:55Here's what's happening.
17:56Europe buys way more
17:58from China
17:59than China buys from Europe.
18:01Since 2019,
18:03this gap has grown
18:03by nearly 60%.
18:05For France alone,
18:06it's even worse.
18:08They're buying
18:08$45 billion worth
18:10of Chinese goods
18:11every year.
18:12But China?
18:13Only buying
18:14$35 billion from them.
18:16Their nuclear technology
18:18has overtaken France's.
18:20Macron himself admitted it.
18:22Europe used to sell
18:23technology to China.
18:24Now, Europe needs to buy
18:26technology from China.
18:28Batteries,
18:29electric vehicles,
18:31solar power.
18:32It's a complete reversal.
18:34And it stings.
18:36Macron and Xi had what they
18:38called friendly and candid talks.
18:40They signed 12 cooperation
18:41agreements,
18:42nuclear energy,
18:43education,
18:44population aging,
18:45and yes,
18:46even panda conservation.
18:48China is lending France
18:50two more giant pandas
18:51from 2027
18:52because nothing says
18:54let's fix trade imbalances
18:55like adorable bears.
18:59But here's where
19:00it gets interesting.
19:01Behind the smiles,
19:03Macron delivered a warning.
19:04And according to him,
19:05it wasn't subtle.
19:07In an interview
19:08after the trip,
19:09Macron revealed
19:10what he really said
19:11and I quote,
19:12I told the Chinese
19:13their trade surplus
19:14is unsustainable.
19:15They're killing
19:16their own customers.
19:17If they don't react,
19:18we Europeans
19:19will impose tariffs.
19:21Just like America
19:22is doing.
19:23Boom.
19:24Cards on the table.
19:26Now, this is fascinating
19:27because Macron
19:28is essentially saying,
19:30look,
19:30we don't want
19:31a trade war,
19:32but you're leaving
19:32us no choice.
19:34You're selling too much
19:35and buying too little.
19:36Fix it
19:37or we'll fix it
19:38for you.
19:39Macron also pointed out
19:40something clever.
19:42Europe is caught
19:43in the middle.
19:44On the one side,
19:45America's Donald Trump
19:46with his tariffs
19:47and protectionism.
19:48On the other side,
19:49China flooding markets
19:51with subsidized goods.
19:52Europe has become
19:54what Macron calls
19:55the adjustment market,
19:57meaning everyone
19:59dumps their problems
20:00on Europe
20:00and European industry
20:02is getting crushed.
20:03But Macron
20:05didn't just threaten.
20:07He also offered solutions.
20:09He proposed a deal.
20:10Europe would lift restrictions
20:12on selling
20:12semiconductor machinery
20:14to China.
20:15In return,
20:16China would stop
20:17limiting exports
20:18of rare earth minerals.
20:21Now, let's zoom out
20:22because this isn't
20:23just about trade.
20:24There's a massive
20:25geopolitical chess game
20:27happening here.
20:28Ukraine.
20:29That's the elephant
20:30in the room.
20:32Europe desperately
20:33wants China
20:34to pressure Russia
20:35to end the war.
20:36Macron raised it
20:37during his visit.
20:38He asked China
20:39to support a ceasefire
20:41to stop strikes
20:42on critical infrastructure.
20:44Winter is coming,
20:45after all.
20:46But China isn't budging.
20:48They assured Russia
20:49of their continued support.
20:51Xi said China
20:52remains committed to peace.
20:54But peace,
20:55in diplomatic speak,
20:56can mean many things.
20:58And China clearly
20:59isn't ready
20:59to throw Russia
21:00under the bus.
21:01But what does all
21:03of this mean for India?
21:04Because we are not
21:05just spectators here.
21:06We are right in the middle
21:07of this shifting world order.
21:10First,
21:11the trade imbalance issue.
21:13India has the same problem
21:14with China.
21:15We import way more
21:16than we export.
21:18Electronics,
21:18machinery,
21:19chemicals,
21:20Chinese goods
21:21dominate our markets.
21:23And just like Europe,
21:24India is trying
21:25to reduce this dependency.
21:26Europe's experience
21:28is a warning for us.
21:30If we don't build
21:31our manufacturing capabilities now,
21:33we'll end up like them,
21:35caught between
21:35American protectionism
21:36and Chinese overproduction.
21:39With nowhere to go,
21:40and that's the problem.
21:42Second,
21:43the technology angle.
21:45Europe is now looking
21:46to buy new tech
21:47from China.
21:48India needs to make sure
21:49we don't end up
21:50in the same boat.
21:52We are investing heavily
21:53in semiconductors,
21:54EVs,
21:55and green energy.
21:56The race is on,
21:57and we can't afford
21:58to fall behind.
22:01Third,
22:02rare earth minerals.
22:03China controls
22:04most of the world's supply.
22:06They're using this
22:06as leverage.
22:07India has some
22:08rare earth deposits.
22:10We need to develop them
22:11and also secure
22:12more overseas access
22:14of rare earths.
22:15Fast.
22:16Because depending on China
22:18for critical minerals
22:19is dangerous.
22:21Finally,
22:22there's the bigger picture.
22:23Europe is realizing
22:24it can't rely on America
22:26or China completely.
22:27They need alternatives.
22:29That's where India comes in.
22:31As a manufacturing hub,
22:32as a tech partner,
22:34as a reliable democracy,
22:36the India-EU trade deal
22:38suddenly looks
22:38more attractive to them.
22:41Macron threatened tariffs.
22:42Xi offered friendship,
22:43but no concessions.
22:45No major deals were signed.
22:46The trade imbalance remains,
22:48and the geopolitical tensions continue.
22:50From India's perspective,
22:52this is a wake-up call.
22:54We need to build
22:55our manufacturing strength,
22:57develop our tech capabilities,
23:00secure our supply chains,
23:02and position ourselves
23:03as a reliable alternative.
23:05That's all on this edition
23:09of India Today Global.
23:11But before I go in,
23:12what might be the most unexpected
23:13celebrity headline of the year,
23:16Katy Perry and former Canadian
23:17Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
23:19have gone Instagram official.
23:22And the reveal happened
23:22halfway across the world
23:24in Tokyo.
23:25Shitya Gosavi with this report.
23:27Goodbye and take care.
23:28It's the celebrity plot twist
23:43no-one saw coming.
23:47Katy Perry, global pop sensation,
23:49and Justin Trudeau,
23:50former Canadian Prime Minister,
23:51have stepped into the spotlight
23:53as a couple.
24:00Not through a press statement,
24:01but through a surprise drop
24:03on Instagram.
24:11Perry posted a carousel
24:13from her Japan tour.
24:14But one picture instantly
24:16stole global attention.
24:18A bright, warm selfie of the pair,
24:20with their faces touching,
24:22greening like a duo
24:23who no longer need to hide.
24:30Another clip shows the pair laughing
24:32as they try sushi
24:33in a bustling Tokyo restaurant.
24:35Relaxed, familiar,
24:37almost cinematic.
24:42Well, social media
24:43didn't just notice,
24:44it exploded.
24:46In just hours,
24:48the images fueled a wave
24:49of excitement and disbelief online.
24:52After months of whispers
24:53and greeny paparazzi shots,
24:56fans finally had
24:57what looked like confirmation.
25:01Then came Trudeau's post.
25:03The former PM shared a photo
25:05from the same evening,
25:06featuring him and Perry
25:07alongside Japan's
25:09former Prime Minister,
25:10Fumio Kishida,
25:11and his wife.
25:12The caption,
25:13warm and appreciative,
25:15casually included Perry's name.
25:17As if the world hadn't already
25:19started spiraling.
25:23But the romance timeline
25:25goes further back.
25:26Trudeau attended Perry's concert
25:28earlier this year,
25:30sparking the first round of rumours.
25:32Then came Paris,
25:33the moment that confirmed everything.
25:37The pair were photographed
25:38hand in hand,
25:40walking through an event
25:41before slipping into a car together.
25:43The images marked Perry's 41st birthday
25:46and seemingly the soft launch
25:48of their relationship.
25:52For Perry,
25:53this comes months after
25:54her separation from actor
25:56Orlando Bloom,
25:57with whom she shares a daughter.
26:01For Trudeau,
26:02it follows his split
26:03from Sophie Gregoire in 2023.
26:08And now,
26:09halfway across the world,
26:11amid neon lights,
26:13tour dates,
26:14and diplomatic meetings,
26:15the two appear to be writing
26:17an entirely new chapter.
26:19One that blends global politics,
26:21pop stardom,
26:22and an unexpected love story
26:24that has captured
26:25the world's attention.
26:29With Shitya Gosavi,
