00:00Hello and welcome to the Met Office forecast for the week ahead, which of course this week
00:04starts with Storm Bram and multiple yellow and amber warnings enforced because of the
00:09risk of flooding, disruption, damaging winds.
00:13Now, at the time of recording, Storm Bram is this massive cloud forming in the Atlantic
00:18and it's a system that will deepen as it approaches the UK during Monday night.
00:24Here it is, Storm Bram, isobars being added to the centre of the low as it undergoes deep
00:29opening heading towards the UK, bringing its wind and rain in on Monday night and by Tuesday
00:35morning a very tricky start to the day with widespread strong winds and heavy rain for
00:41many away from the north of Scotland.
00:43So morning rush hour Tuesday could be particularly challenging on the roads with disruption likely
00:50in places from the word go, from both wind and rain.
00:54The rain, the biggest cause for concern initially because it's going to be very wet overnight
00:59and that rain tends to sweep north and east through the day, easing a little into the
01:05afternoon, some brighter weather coming along, albeit with further spells of rain reaching
01:09western Scotland and showers elsewhere.
01:12Some cloud breaks but it's actually after the main band of rain goes through that the winds
01:17whip up.
01:18More on that in a moment.
01:19Let's take a look at the rain and how much we're expecting to see during Monday night into
01:24Tuesday.
01:25The scale is shown on the right there and you can see that throughout Monday night the
01:31rain quickly moves into the south, spreads north eastwards across the UK and the darker
01:36blues indicate that it's many northern and western parts of the UK that will see the highest accumulations
01:40of rain, 40 millimetres widely, western hills seeing 80 millimetres.
01:45But the main cause for concern actually parts of South Wales and Dartmoor weather is an amber
01:50warning in force because of the risk in some of the wetter spots of 100 millimetres or more
01:56of rainfall through Monday night and much of Tuesday.
02:00That rain of course falling onto saturated ground, it's been a very wet November and start
02:04of December, a risk of transport disruption as well as flooding to properties.
02:10So the rain, biggest cause for concern initially from Storm Bram.
02:15By the afternoon the heaviest of the rainfall is moving through, brighter skies are following,
02:20and our attention turns to the wind.
02:22Now the wind of course coming from the south west is going to lead to exceptionally mild
02:26temperatures.
02:27We're talking about 15 Celsius widely, 16 or perhaps slightly more in some of the warmer
02:33spots across northwest Wales for example, northern parts of Somerset.
02:37But that wind, well it's going to be increasing further as we go through Tuesday evening.
02:43Here we are Tuesday morning as Storm Bram deepens.
02:46And then widely by lunchtime we've got 50 to 60 mile per hour wind gusts across western
02:51parts of the UK, 40 to 50 further east.
02:55But it's exposed coasts towards the west where we're likely to see 70 mile per hour wind gusts.
02:59Some parts of Northern Ireland are touched more.
03:01But northwest Scotland, the biggest cause for concern.
03:04The wind's here peaking during Tuesday evening.
03:07We're talking about 80 mile per hour wind gusts, perhaps 90 in some of the most exposed spots
03:13of northwest Scotland.
03:15The Outer Hebrides for example as Storm Bram makes a close pass during Tuesday evening.
03:22The strongest winds then move to the north of Scotland into Shetland and Orkney overnight
03:27into the start of Wednesday before eventually abating, albeit gradually, during Wednesday morning.
03:33So an amber warning in force for northwest Scotland because of the winds, but through Wednesday,
03:38although a blustery start, it is going to become less windy.
03:42We've still got spells of heavy rain moving through the north and northwest of Scotland
03:45during Wednesday.
03:46Still gale force winds here, but further south brighter skies, gusty, yes, but not as windy.
03:52And towards the south the showers fade by the afternoon as well, so plenty of sunshine.
03:57Further showers affecting northern England, northern Ireland and Scotland throughout much of the
04:00day.
04:00Some heavy downpours, perhaps some rumble of thunder as well.
04:03It's not quite as mild on Wednesday, 12 or 13 Celsius, but temperatures still above average
04:09for the time of year.
04:10We could say goodbye to Storm Bram then later Wednesday.
04:14Another low starts to turn up into Thursday, but this is a much slower moving beast.
04:19It is swinging a weather front in, but it's going to take a long time to cross the UK
04:24because it's being held up by an extension of higher pressure towards the southeast.
04:28That higher pressure leading to some mist and fog and such a frost first thing on Thursday
04:33towards the southeast.
04:34But the winds start to pick up again through the day as the next weather front begins to
04:38move in.
04:39We'll see it cloud over as well.
04:41Lots of cloud around and the rain reaching northern Ireland and western Scotland, but not
04:45making much further progress towards the east.
04:48We keep some brighter skies in the east, but actually there'll be a few showery outbreaks
04:52reaching western parts of Britain, and it's another relatively mild day.
04:57Here's the weather front still making its way eastwards across the UK on Friday.
05:01It does fizzle away, doesn't bring much rain to the east and southeast.
05:06Brighter skies once again follow from the west.
05:08Winds start to pick up in the northwest of Scotland.
05:11Showers returning here, and it's going to feel fresher with temperatures in the single
05:16figures towards the far north and west by the end of Friday.
05:19Once that system moves out of the way, we're looking at another low pressure moving in
05:25for the weekend.
05:26The jet stream in a very buoyant mood at the moment.
05:29It's going to send low after low through during Saturday into Sunday and the start of next
05:34week.
05:34So yes, Saturday, bright start for many, but frequent showers moving in and then longer
05:39spells of rain pushing into the northwest, strengthening winds once again.
05:43And Sunday, likewise, another very unsettled day.
05:46But of course, we'll keep you updated on all of that for the time being.
05:50I encourage you to check the Met Office website and app for all the details on the warnings
05:54where you are and make sure you stay safe.
