Kenyan bird lover Rodgers Oloo Magutha has dedicated his life to rescuing and rehabilitating injured wild birds, earning the affectionate nickname 'Nairobi Birdman.'

Footage from Saturday shows the bird rescuer strolling through the Kenyan capital with a black kite hawk perched on his head. Locals can be seen gathering around as brave onlookers interacted with the hunter bird.

"I am a bird lover, bird enthusiast and a bird rescuer," Magutha emphasised. "I rescue endangered, abandoned birds, and rehabilitate them until they become healthy."

27-year-old Magutha spent over 10 years living on the streets as a child, a hardship that nurtured his empathy and inspired his unusual friendship with birds.

"During my leisure time, we used to sneak inside the park where we could watch the birds, explore nature and look at the lake. My love for birds started while I was at the lake," he recalled.

According to Magutha, some view his work as an act of 'witchcraft or sorcery,' due to cultural prejudice against birds. However, his community embraces his efforts.

"We appreciate the work that 'birdman' does, because he is helping the birds in the streets," said Nicholas Osogo, a local. "He is doing a really good job. If there were several people like him, the birds in our area would be okay."

Moving forward, Magutha aspires to some day open a family centre and a bird rescue and rehabilitation centre, aiming to save both vulnerable homeless children and urban wildlife.

00:28So
00:58Actually, when you see this, you know I'm a bird lover, a bird enthusiast, a bird rescuer.
01:13So for me, what I do is currently rescuing injured birds, abandon and rehabilitating them
01:21until they become, to a say, unhealthy because you know most of the birds which I rescue them,
01:28you find them that they are abandoned, yeah, most of them they don't have food or a dependent
01:33mother which they can feed them.
01:34So my passion for birds started when I was living in Nakuru, since it was my birthplace.
01:54So during my leisure time, we used to sneak inside the park, whereby we go and watch the
02:00birds exploring nature, looking at the lake.
02:04So my first love for the birds started while I was in the lake.
02:19When you look something like this, most of the white people, they are the ones you can
02:24find them taking care of the birds, especially the wild birds.
02:28So for the African people, they will see it as a witchcraft, yeah, maybe you are a sorcerer,
02:36most of the people even they don't understand nature.
02:39Yeah, sometimes we lack food.
02:42You know, most of the birds which I rescue, they depend on meat, they are flesh eaters.
02:46So sometimes it is sad for us to find meat, especially when I rescue a lot of birds.
02:53So recently I was having like 10 birds with a different species, the biggest one being
02:58the marabou stock.
02:59You see, when you see that scavenger, it eats a lot of meat.
03:06So for me, my dream and the vision for the future is to open a rescue center for the birds.
03:28Not only the birds, you know me, I've come where I live with the street family, you'll
03:41find most of the street family, they don't have a shelter, they don't have a place to
03:44live.
03:45But when you compare the street family and the rescue birds, they have the same need.
03:50So when I dream of opening a rescue center for the birds, I dream even to open a rescue
03:56center for the street family.
03:57Yeah, we appreciate the work that the birds are doing, they have to go and help them
04:12and help them with birds from the street.
04:15When I do not, there is an organization that has been done in a village, and there is
04:24a special place to experience.
04:26I can tell you about the streamers that are there and I care.
04:31I can take care of the birds, I care about their birds.
04:34I can take care of the birds, but I do not care about it.
04:38At the end of the day, it is a great time to come.
04:40It is a great time to come the lights.
