00:00In Bangladesh, various artisans in the province of Tangail are asking UNESCO for help in their struggle to keep alive the tradition of waving saris, garments that have been part of their culture for hundreds of years.
00:15If granted, this request will change the lives of hundreds of families in the region. Let's see.
00:21All the colors of the rainbow are for sale. This is the premise of the group of sari artisans in Tangail, Bangladesh, who continue the tradition of creating this garment steeped in history, beauty, and symbolism.
00:39A sari is not just a garment, it is poetry wrapped in six meters of elegance, a tapestry of tradition that whispers stories of heritage, art, and craftsmanship.
00:50Every joint and thread of a sari bears the moving imprint of the weaver's hands, a rhythmic dance of fingers that have mastered the delicate symphony of strands.
01:07Tangail is located right along the banks of the Daleshwari and Lao-Ajang rivers.
01:12The water here was clear, and the quality of the thread and the dye depends on the water in which the thread is processed.
01:18When saris are made using threads processed in this water, their brightness and sheen are enhanced.
01:24This was a beneficial aspect of our geographical location.
01:33Behind this symphony, there is always a master who orchestrates the composition, capable of conveying feelings beyond the fabric.
01:41However, these skilled artisans struggle to keep their legacy alive in today's fast-paced world of mass production and machine-made fabrics.
01:52Since hand-woven saris take weeks to create, they often compete with cheaper alternatives made on mechanical looms.
01:59Our main characteristic is that the entire process of making these series is completely handmade.
02:10All the qualities inherent in handmade items are 100% present here.
02:15For example, we delicately refine the thread by hand, a process that is now usually done by machines.
02:22But when we do it by hand, we can do it in our own unique way.
02:25Whereas machines follow specific programmed commands, here, we can bring out colors in full floral motifs as we wish.
02:33For instance, we can use seven different colors within a single leaf or petal.
02:44Nil Kamal Basak acknowledges the power that competition in the market have over consumers,
02:50but he also recognizes the quality of handmade series, which are totally different from industrialized ones.
02:58No matter how much economic pressure they face from factory producers,
03:03he and the other weavers in the commercial district are committed to making clothing with sole and using the best materials.
