00:00So this is not really a surprise, it's been going on for some time now and we are in the
00:28full swing of a shakeout in the media industries that started at the end of the previous decade
00:34where we have a lot of companies from the telecommunications sector or tech companies
00:39coming in and buying media companies that have a lot of assets.
00:45Netflix has stayed clear of that, tried to develop organically as much as possible.
00:51But on the other hand, the so-called legacy media that are now part of conglomerates like
00:56Warner Bros Discovery and Paramount Skydance, they found it very difficult to compete.
01:04So they became ripe for takeovers and of course Netflix saw an opportunity here to move on
01:13and it's it's doing it, it looks like.
01:30Well, we should always look at the impact of any big merger.
01:35But I think if we look at the history of the media industries in the last three or four decades, there's always been warnings
01:43and there's always been people pointing the finger about potential dangers in the future.
01:48Like, for example, in the late 80s, early 90s, we had Japanese studios like Sony and Machusita buying the American studios.
01:56And also later on, we have Disney buying the 21st Century Fox and there was a lot of discussion about this.
02:05I mean, there is obviously we see the whole media industry's landscape shrinking, going into the hands of big conglomerates
02:16that now are not just in the media business, but in the tech business.
02:20We had Amazon buying MGM also just a few years ago.
02:24So, yes, there is certainly reasons to be worried.
02:27But on the other hand, the industry quite often find ways to rebound and and and basically weather that storm.
02:36Because I've been looking at some of the comments that fans have made in the announcement of this deal,
03:01and a lot of them were very happy because they will think that if HBO and Netflix, you know, come together,
03:08there will be, you know, one rather than two subscriptions, there will be, you know, more shows in one place
03:14and they would be very happy with that.
03:16On the other hand, there are a lot of people who actually, you know, want the diversity.
03:21HBO has been spending a lot more emphasis on developing those shows.
03:25Netflix did it at the beginning, but because of the volume of shows it produces,
03:29it doesn't do that as much.
03:31And that's why a lot of the Netflix shows, they just disappear every one or two seasons.
03:36But the key thing is that for a lot of viewers, this is good news.
03:40But for others, it's not, I think.
03:43I think we're reaching a stage now where the kind of what used to be the big six
03:56now have become or are becoming big four.
04:00But what is interesting, I think, is we see now the beginning of what is going to be
04:06emergence and acquisitions phase where we will see more of Apple and Meta and Alphabet and also AI companies.
04:16I've read recently that the AI companies are really interested in the companies that control
04:21the television shows and films because they can use these programs and these films
04:26to train the large language models.
04:28I think it's great, it's great.
04:40This is extreme.
