00:00Putin warned one more time that his troops will take Ukraine's eastern Donbass by force
00:05if it's not ceded by Kyiv.
00:10The European Commission imposed a 120 million euro fine on Elon Musk's platform Exxon Friday,
00:16the first penalty under the Digital Services Act.
00:20Russian President Vladimir Putin again warned on Thursday that his troops will take Ukraine's
00:26eastern Donbass by force if it's not ceded by Kyiv, describing some proposals in the U.S.
00:32plan to end the war in Ukraine as unacceptable.
00:36Putin, who is on a state visit to India, said in an interview that the proposals discussed
00:40at his meeting with U.S. envoys were based on earlier discussions but also included new elements.
00:48He said that Russia will fulfill the goals it sets and take all of the eastern Donetsk region,
00:53something that Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has always refused,
00:58warning that abandoning the Donbass region would open the door for Putin to start a third war in Ukraine.
01:05Putin's maximalist and uncompromising stance came amid a planned meeting of U.S. special envoys with the
01:12Ukrainian delegation. The Russian leader has shown no signs of any compromise or intent to make a deal,
01:19refusing to elaborate on what Moscow could accept or reject.
01:24Amid the disappointing outcome of his Kremlin talks with U.S. envoys, European leaders left on
01:29the sidelines by Washington's direct engagement with Moscow and Kyiv have accused Putin of only feigning
01:36an interest in peace.
01:42Russian President Vladimir Putin is morally responsible for a nerve agent attack on British soil in 2018 that
01:49led to the death of an innocent woman, an inquiry found. Russian agents sent to assassinate a former
01:55spy had smuggled the deadly Novichok into the country. Their targets, Sergei Skripal and his
02:01daughter Yulia were poisoned by the Novichok at his home in Salisbury in March 2018 but survived.
02:08Four months later, British citizen Dawn Sturgis died after spraying herself with a fake perfume bottle
02:14found by her boyfriend in Amesbury, around 11 kilometers north of Salisbury.
02:20Inquiry chair Anthony Hughes said on Thursday the assassination attempt on Skripal must have
02:25been authorized at the highest level by Putin. Hughes said the assassins recklessly discarded the bottle
02:31of Novichok in a public place and therefore bore moral responsibility for Sturgis' death.
02:37The British government sanctioned Russia's GRU intelligence agency and summoned Moscow's
02:43ambassador on Thursday after the inquiry's findings were made public.
02:50This week, EU coal legislators agreed on a historic deal to end energy dependency on
02:54Moscow by 2027. Energy Commissioner Don Jorgensen explained the complex negotiations and said the
03:00efforts had paid off, claiming the ban on Russian energy is a point of no return moment for the bloc.
03:05Very uncomfortable. So instead of using sanctions, we have used the prohibition. So we will actually
03:10ban the gas. This has another advantage also, which is that when there is a peace, which we hope there
03:16will be soon, that will not mean that we will then just start buying gas again. This will stand also
03:21after a peace agreement, which I think is good because we should never repeat the mistake of becoming
03:26dependent on Russia again. And what will the decision mean?
03:29The Danish Commissioner added that a new law to ban oil is also in the works and will be presented soon.
03:35So people have said, well, okay, this is the gas and that's the most important thing. But what
03:39about the oil? Because there's also still some oil being imported in Europe and also here we have
03:45said that needs to stop. So in 22, we got 45 percent of our gas from Russia. Now we get just over 10
03:51percent and that'll go away completely. We got 27 percent of our oil in 22 from Russia. Now we get two or
03:57three percent. So it's not a big amount, but still that needs to go away completely also.
04:02Jorgensen regretted Hungary's reaction to the ban as Budapest says it will legally challenge the
04:08European Commission's proposal. We will still help the populations of Slovakia and Hungary,
04:14even if the governments do not support this legislation, to make sure that also the citizens
04:20in these countries, of course, have access to cheap energy.
04:23Daniel Jorgensen, Commissioner there for housing and energy. Thank you so much for being our guest
04:27on Europe Today.
04:30The European Commission imposed a 120 million euros fine on Elon Musk's Platform X on Friday,
04:38the first penalty under the Digital Services Act. At the center of the probe was the blue check mark,
04:45which previously signaled official accounts, but is now sold for 7 euros a month, confusing users on
04:51account authenticity. X, previously known as Twitter, also failed to meet transparency obligations for
04:58advertising, lacking an updated register that could expose users to election-related scams. The Commission
05:05criticized X for not providing researchers with data on views and likes as required. The fine breaks down
05:11to 45 million euros for check marks, 40 million euros for researcher data, and 35 million euros for ads.
05:19The fine is well below the maximum 6% of global turnover, unlike previous larger fines on Apple and Meta.
05:28The legal content and algorithms are ongoing.
05:35Spanish police said on Thursday they had broken up a criminal network linked to smuggling 300 workers
05:41into the country, mostly from Nepal. Police said they arrested 11 people and are investigating two others.
05:50Some 294 of the foreign workers lacked proper documentation to live and work in Spain.
05:58Officials said the workers were placed illegally on farms in central and eastern Spain and didn't
06:04receive pay for months of work besides being provided very basic meals. A video released by Spanish
06:11authorities showed scores of people sitting side by side on mattresses lined up in a low-lit room.
06:18According to a police statement, most of those smuggled had entered on tourist visas,
06:25including for other countries within the European Union's Schengen area. According to the World Bank,
06:31over 20% of Nepal's 30 million people live in poverty.
06:35Two dozen humanitarian workers who participated in search and rescue operations on the Greek island of
06:46Lesbos from 2016 to 2021 have begun their long-awaited trial. During the peak of Europe's refugee crisis
06:54that started in 2015, Lesbos became a key entry point for asylum seekers who often made dangerous journeys
07:01on small boats to reach Europe. The accused face up to 20 years in prison for charges including
07:08alleged participation in a criminal organization, facilitating the entry of third country nationals
07:14into Greece and money laundering. Greek authorities say the trial focuses on a border security issue,
07:21but human rights groups have condemned the accusations as a politicized crackdown
07:25on humanitarian workers. It comes after years of allegations that Greek authorities breached
07:31international and European laws in their response to the arrivals of refugees.
07:37In January, the European Court of Human Rights found that the Greek Coast Guard had conducted
07:42so-called pushbacks against potential asylum seekers, marking the first time a court officially
07:48acknowledged a practice Greece has long denied. Today, there are no NGOs conducting search and
07:54rescue operations or providing emergency response during landings on Lesbos,
07:59despite over 3,500 people arriving to the island so far this year, according to the UN's Refugee Agency.
08:11The US military destroyed another boat allegedly carrying illegal narcotics,
08:16killing four men according to the Pentagon. The strike was conducted by the Florida-based
08:21Southern Command under orders of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He has come under growing scrutiny
08:28for similar operations targeting alleged drug smuggling boats, which have resulted in more
08:32than 80 deaths since the start of the campaign. The strike comes amid criticism over an attack in September,
08:40in which US forces are said to have launched a follow-up strike that killed survivors of an initial hit
08:46on another suspected drug vessel. Admiral Frank Mitch Bradley, who oversees elements of the operation,
08:53said he received no order to kill everyone on board. According to the Trump administration,
08:59the US is at war with drug cartels, and that justifies the use of such force. The campaign,
09:05which has focused largely on waters near Venezuela, has fueled diplomatic friction with Caracas.
09:11Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused Washington of using counter-narcotics operations
09:17as cover for efforts to destabilize his government, an allegation US officials deny.
09:28Each year, millions of people are estimated to suffer from seasonal depression, also known as
09:33seasonal affective disorder. Countries in Northern Europe and above the Arctic Circle are no stranger to
09:40long dark days. Experts in Norway, Sweden and Finland say the limited sunlight has a major impact on mood
09:47and can lead to low energy, increased appetite and feelings of sadness. Because light has an immediate
09:53effect on your well-being, to increase serotonin in your brain, which is a very important chemical to
10:00promote also, you know, that you feel good, that you're in a good mood. So all these things you can do.
10:09So it's not like it's a fade and an annual or a seasonal fade and you cannot do anything about it.
10:17A light therapy device or dawn simulator are common tools used to mimic light and boost serotonin in
10:23the brain. Experts also warn for social isolation and urge people not to withdraw socially during wintertime.
10:30They also recommend regular exercise to fight the winter blues.
10:40Netflix has announced the definitive purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery in a nearly $83 billion deal
10:46that includes HBO and HBO Max. The announcement comes after a months-long bidding war, with Paramount
10:54being the other front-runner to obtain Warner Bros. The acquisition brings two of the industry's
11:00biggest players in film and TV under one roof, drastically altering the entertainment landscape.
11:07Netflix said the merger would optimize subscription plans for consumers and give them more titles to
11:12choose from. Still, the deal will draw significant antitrust scrutiny, with critics warning that
11:18consolidation across the industry will mean less variety of content and fewer choices for consumers
11:24down the road. The merger could also mean bad news for movie theaters and those who work in them.
11:30Cinema United, a trade association that represents more than 30,000 movie screens in the U.S. and
11:36another 26,000 screens internationally, said the deal and the streaming business model in general,
11:42threatened the global theatrical exhibition business.
