Sir Keir Starmer says his government is following the position that was “clearly set out” in the Labour manifesto when it comes to relations with the European Union. It comes after comments made by Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy on The News Agents podcast suggested that countries within a customs union tend to see stronger economic growth. Labour’s manifesto ahead of the 2024 General Election pledged not to rejoin the European single market or the customs union. Report by Jonesia. 00:00Well, the position that we are taking has been clearly set out in the manifesto, and then we've been following it.
00:05And earlier this year, we had the first UK-EU summit ever, and we had 10 strands to a closer relationship.
00:14So we've totally reset relations with the EU. That's good for our economy, good for defence and security, good for the work that we need to do on energy.
00:22And we've transformed, really, in 17 months in office to a country that was looking disinterested in being on the world stage,
00:34to a country that's now respected again, and where other countries are looking to us for, you know, influence, for advice, for partnerships.
00:44You're seeing that with the EU, but of course elsewhere across the world.
00:47So I'm really pleased that we've been able to move things forward.
