00:00That is a picture-perfect postcard
00:07It's paradise paradise on Earth
00:12Huge difference in color from the Pacific to the Caribbean Caribbean ocean is just unmatched are there sharks in these words?
00:19Bocas del Toro an archipelago of tropical islands along the northwest coast of Panama
00:31Ranging from uninhabited natural wonders to the colorful stilted clapboard houses of Bocas town
00:39This has been a proper vengeance story. I think we've seen that growth to first we were in total shock
00:45Yeah
00:49Competition in the penultimate leg of the race promises to be tight as just 43 minutes
00:54Separates the top three teams and for the first time Dylan and Jackie sit in pole position
01:01Don't slip up. You've got the pressure of leading the pack now. I don't like it. We don't want pressure
01:06crumble we crumble
01:07Still after that first place at one point. I've had dreams where I'm like we come first and like shoving the knees from
01:15I
01:17First one when we first met Dylan. He was a different person to who he is now now
01:22I feel like he's grown into himself throughout this journey, and now I'm ready to beat it
01:29I was quite gutted when we opened the book. No you were fuming. I was I was pretty I was pretty mad because I
01:36felt like we've done so well
01:38How would the top two become the boy character building I think we felt sorry for
01:47We're not too far behind where we know our strengths and when we start moving way
01:52We move we move four legs in everyone is hot on it now
01:56Yeah, like everybody's found their river obviously we finished last
01:59But it's all to play for every man for themselves on this one you thought we were racing before oh, we're on it
02:07We're changing here. It's gear five now. She likes to go. Yeah, we race. Yeah
02:12Yeah
02:22What day
02:266 30 a.m
02:29First to leave the checkpoint
02:31Buenos dias
02:33Race leaders Dylan and Jackie
02:35You ready? Ready
02:37Your fifth checkpoint is
02:39Medellin
02:41I swear that's Colombia
02:43I think I've seen it in like a Pablo Escobar series
02:45Oh really? I think
02:47Over 1,300 kilometers away
02:49Colombia's second largest city Medellin sprawls across the Abura Valley in the northern end of the Andes mountain range
02:57As the epicenter of Pablo Escobar's drug cartel
03:02It was once labeled the murder capital of the world
03:07But now it's a safer and vibrant metropolis
03:12Okay
03:14All teams have to bypass the Darien Gap by water
03:19For safety reasons this journey has to be in daylight hours
03:22Darien Gap
03:23I've heard that it can be a bit dangerous
03:26The notorious and perilous Darien Gap
03:30The only land connection between Central and South America
03:34But no roads run through its dense jungle and vast swamps
03:38For tens of thousands of migrants each year
03:41This treacherous expanse, much of it controlled by criminal gangs, is their only route north
03:47To reach Colombia, the teams have one option
03:53To travel by sea
03:55But first, a chance to explore Panama
03:59Panama's in quite a funny shape
04:01It's kind of like a goose neck
04:03There seems to be a main road going through
04:05Yeah, yeah
04:06They may be tempted to grab opportunities in the west
04:10With its allure of well-paid work and hidden natural beauty
04:16Or the adventurers could make a beeline for the east coast
04:20And the secluded turquoise ringed islands of Gunayala
04:24Also known as San Blas
04:26An autonomous territory home to the indigenous Gunna people
04:30On the last leg, just being in nature gave me a sense of calm
04:34And it would be nice to have a nature feast again
04:38Definitely
04:39Something like hot water springs
04:41Yeah
04:42Waterfalls
04:43Yeah, yeah
04:44That would be amazing
04:45So if we go south, maybe Buquet
04:47There might be like something around there
04:49Yeah
04:50And then follow this big road through to Panama City
04:53Yeah
04:54It's also very difficult to judge whether we have enough money for the whole trip or not
04:59We've hemorrhaged a bit
05:00Yeah
05:01With budgets dwindling, Dylan and Jackie have the least amount of money to tackle the longest leg of the race so far
05:10It's just the unknowns of these countries, we don't know
05:14But this is our penultimate leg, so I want us to stand in good stead for the last leg by saving in this leg
05:23Here we go
05:24Hola
05:25Hola
05:26To continue their journey, teams need to get off the islands of Bocas del Toro
05:30Boats depart regularly to Almirante, the closest mainland port where they can pick up onward transport
05:38We need to get to Boqueta
05:40Right now it's the Atua
05:42We get a boat to the main island and then bus shorter to Boqueta
05:46Would it not be quicker for us to get a boat now to Almirante and there's any Almirante travel to Boqueta sooner?
05:53It's possible but it's more expensive
05:56I recommend when you go it's 3-2 Boqueta but at 2-1
05:59Okay
06:00So shall we book it?
06:01Yeah
06:02Let's book it
06:0330 each, yeah?
06:04Rather than risk finding a connection in the port of Almirante, Dylan and Jackie opt for a package deal transfer of boat and bus to Boqueta in the Western Highlands
06:14We could get a quicker ferry but then it's a bit risky juggling buses which are not that regular over there from what I can gather
06:21Also it might be more expensive that rain as well
06:24So it makes more sense to wait for three hours
06:27I think it's smart to save money we can speed up later
06:32While the leaders sit tight
06:35That's where we're headed
06:36Medellin
06:38Having departed half an hour behind them and now on their tails siblings Roman and Harley Moon
06:44This is our last time for a proper like cultural adventure
06:47Do you know what I mean?
06:48Yeah
06:49Roman found the first few legs quite stressful and I really felt like I had to look after him a lot
06:54But on the last leg he's been quite calm so I hope he realises it is fun as well
07:02We're gonna have to get the boat from Panama so Mandinga is a tiny island in the direction of Colombia which is good
07:09Yeah
07:10It is home to a single guna family
07:13I mean the only thing is is I'm an Arsenal fan and I like gunas
07:17I think we can live in our own bubble at times and travelling somewhere and seeing what their version of life is
07:24I think it offers perspective
07:26The faster we can get to Panama City the better
07:29Seeking an off the beaten track experience while staying race focused
07:34Roman and Harley Moon plan to head via Panama City straight to Gunayala
07:40Harley
07:41Look
07:42Jackie and Dylan
07:43Can we see them? Yeah
07:44So what's the fastest way to Panama City?
07:47Yeah
07:48I was hoping not to see another team
07:50Yeah
07:51So our best bet is to get to Almirante
07:54Yes
07:55And then get the bus to Panama
07:57Yeah, let's just get off this island
07:59Can we get two tickets?
08:00Two tickets?
08:01Six
08:02Gracias
08:03They're getting on the boat
08:05But I don't think we should be stressed by it
08:08Yeah, we shouldn't sweat about that
08:10Why are they not getting on this boat off the island?
08:13I can still see them, why are they not getting off?
08:16Give them away!
08:17Poodles!
08:18Bye!
08:19Adios
08:22We'll see you in Medellin
08:24I hope
08:26Technically, it feels like we're ahead of the team that are first
08:29Yeah
08:30Here we go
08:31Ruta
08:32Mas Rapina
08:33Got it
08:34Yep
08:35One, two, three
08:36As the siblings make a quick getaway
08:40Just 12 minutes behind them
08:42So my instinct is, we take a job
08:45Anita and Bal, eager to find ways to preserve their budget
08:49Worker shift at Roxy's in Boca Chica, down here
08:52Yeah
08:53And then you're by the main road to get to Panama City
08:57Panama is mega bucks
09:00And so saving money is definitely part of the strategy
09:03Because we know we're going to probably need as much as we can for when we get to Colombia
09:07Anita's plan
09:09Working at a B&B to save an accommodation in the Cherokee province en route to the capital
09:15Almirante, muchas gracias
09:23The first team to arrive on the mainland
09:26Oh, Boleto
09:28Roman and Harley Moon searching for a bus straight to Panama City
09:346pm
09:356pm
09:366pm
09:37It's direct
09:38It's direct
09:39It's direct
09:40The other route is from David
09:41David, Panama
09:42Eh, what time is here, David
09:45Okay
09:47Okay
09:48That's a bus
09:49Shall we get that?
09:50We can't wait till 6pm
09:52Yeah, let's do it
09:53Yeah
09:54With no direct bus departure for seven and a half hours
09:57The siblings head to a nearby transport hub
10:00In search of an earlier connection
10:02Come on David, my sweetheart
10:04Give us some luck
10:05Give us some faith
10:06Do you reckon Dylan and Jackie made it off the island yet?
10:10Do-do-do-do-do
10:16Having finally reached Almirante port by boat, mother and son are still waiting for their bus to depart for Bochetti
10:24Where are you guys from?
10:25Where are you guys from?
10:26Like London area?
10:27Yeah
10:28Like England?
10:29Yeah, yeah
10:30Cool
10:31In Medellin, we did the boat through the sandblast
10:32Don't do it like that, okay?
10:33The waves were like three metres tall
10:36Oh my gosh
10:37People were crying, dogs were barking
10:39Nooo
10:40People were growing up
10:41What?
10:42Who's inside?
10:43We're going to Colombia
10:44We might be doing that
10:45We're...
10:46I think so
10:47Yeah, thank you
10:48And you enjoy as well
10:49Yeah
10:50Yeah
10:51Everyone's crying, she said
10:53Yeah
10:54Yeah
10:55Oh God
11:00Right now the buses are ready
11:02Okay
11:03This way please follow
11:04Thank you, gracias
11:05So we got going at most six hours ago
11:07Yeah, slow stop
11:09Makes you wonder whether where we're going is a bit in the middle of nowhere
11:13That's why there's not such a regular bus service
11:17Hopefully we can make up the ground and finish strong
11:20We'll say positive
11:21Yeah
11:22Say positive
11:23How are you doing, sir?
11:25You okay to take us to the terminal?
11:26Yeah
11:27Excellent
11:28Just arriving off the boat into Almirante, Molly and Tyler
11:32Swift start
11:34With a seven hour gap to close, they're on a dash to the bus station
11:38Hopefully get an overnight bus
11:40To Panama City
11:41To Panama City
11:42And then grab a boat into Colombia
11:45Yeah
11:46Is there a direct bus to Panama City?
11:49Let me see, it's in my space
11:51Oh
11:52Hello
11:53Thank you, ma'am
11:54Who's going to check if there's space on the bus?
11:55That's great
11:56Yeah, I have space to Panama Direct
11:58From here?
11:59Yes
12:00From here
12:01Oh, man
12:02You have luck
12:03That bus reaching about five o'clock in the morning
12:05Yeah
12:06Yeah, perfect
12:07Yeah, perfect
12:08Yeah, amazing
12:09This is good
12:12This is awesome, man
12:15Mmm
12:16You are the best, man
12:17Thank you
12:18Thank you, sir
12:19Eleven hours of travel
12:20Over halfway across the country
12:22And it's a nice accommodation
12:24There you go
12:25Get the bus
12:26Get the bus
12:27Get the bus
12:28Yes
12:31This is going to help us catch up majorly to the other teams
12:35This is the redemption leg for us
12:37Yeah
12:38This is catch up leg
12:39Yeah
12:40Taking the bus Roman and Harley Moon passed on earlier
12:43Molly and Tyler are making a 600km overnight leap to Panama City
12:48I feel like tomorrow morning this is basically like a level playing field
12:55We need to just continue this energy
12:57We can't take our foot off the gas
13:01Look at the skyscrapers
13:02First time we've seen skyscrapers this entire trip
13:05After successfully securing a connection in David
13:08The siblings are the first team into the capital
13:10I'm quite impressed by Panama City
13:14Towering over the Pacific
13:16The Wall Street of Central America
13:18One of the region's wealthiest cities
13:20It's become a magnet for millionaire migration
13:24It really feels like we're in the US
13:26I have a feeling it's going to be US prices
13:30In a way, you're a bit gutted to not spend time in a nice city
13:33But on our budget
13:35I don't think we can afford to stay here
13:39Hola
13:40Oh, Lyft
13:41What?
13:42We haven't had Lyft in ages
13:43This is very modern
13:45Oh, yeah
13:46Electricity and everything
13:48I feel quite good about our progress today
13:50We've pretty much covered half of the country in a day
13:54We're about to cross the Guna Yalla
13:57I don't know much about the Darien Gap
13:59But it doesn't sound safe
14:02There's moments in this race where we've both decided we will not tell our mum about it
14:07And this might be one of those moments
14:19It's got such a nice feeling about it here
14:21You have holler monkeys every morning
14:23Who are here?
14:24Yes
14:28Okay, coming this way
14:29We have the guests today around here already
14:31Nice
14:32Thank you
14:33If you can give me the hand and put those on the tables
14:34Sure
14:35For everybody? Same for everybody?
14:36Yes, exactly
14:37450 kilometres west from Panama City
14:40And sitting on the gulf of Chiriqui National Marine Park
14:43The small fishing village of Boca Chica
14:46This is going to be the best tour you've ever seen in life
14:49Anita and Bal are working to pay off last night's accommodation at Roxy's B&B
14:56This looks so delicious
14:59Buenos dias
15:01There we go
15:02And one for the little board
15:03Right
15:04This is ready to go
15:06Who hasn't had breakfast yet?
15:09You want to tin them?
15:10Yep
15:11I'll wash them
15:13Look at dad, he's washing the dishes
15:15He's really good at that
15:16He's so cute
15:17Oh my god
15:18Well, I've these done in minutes
15:20He's such a hard worker
15:21I want to keep it longer
15:24There we go
15:26They were really helpful for us
15:27I want to show you the area
15:29That would be amazing
15:33This village is just 200 people
15:36I had the experience from Costa Rica
15:38That I used to run hotels
15:39I'm like, I can't start a bed and breakfast by myself
15:43My place is running by girls
15:44All women?
15:45Just women?
15:46Wow
15:47They have their own families
15:48But no husbands
15:49Single women
15:50I told them
15:51I can teach you some English
15:52You can run a place with me together
15:54We have to empower women in a small village like this
15:57I just want them to know how valued they are
16:01That is special for me
16:02This is the dream, Roxy
16:04You're amazing
16:05Thank you
16:07I feel like I'm being told something myself, right?
16:09That there are things that I'd like to do
16:11There's been a bit of a change in my life in the last couple of years
16:18Come on, Dad, let's have a little meander
16:20Before we have to get on it again
16:22Becoming single in my mid-40s is huge
16:26A lovely cove
16:27Wow
16:28Not a soul here
16:31Growing up, there was so much expectation
16:33That you must get married and have children
16:36And so now
16:37It's not just a process of letting go of a past life
16:40It's also an embracing of a new one
16:44I've been in a bit of a funk
16:46But what I saw in Roxy is what I know I have in myself
16:50Drive, tenacity
16:52And that's your strength
16:54Before, there was always this pressure
16:58That I had to keep everyone happy
17:00But now, this whole trip is making me think
17:03There's so much that I want to do
17:05It's like a sense of liberation, Dad
17:10As a woman, but particularly as a South Asian woman
17:12I really enjoy how powerful it feels
17:16To be able to choose to live the life I want to
17:20And actually, I had my dad's support
17:21Maybe I have sacrificed having a family
17:25But I'm okay with that
17:27And this trip has opened up my eyes about Lamar
17:30About you, how you feel and how you think
17:32Do you ever worry about me, Dad?
17:34We sometimes say, oh, who's she with?
17:36Is she by herself?
17:37Does she feel lonely?
17:39And that's why we sometimes phone you up
17:40And say, come and sit with us
17:42We don't want to feel lonely, that's all
17:44I'm not lonely, so
17:46Don't worry about me being lonely
17:48I'm good, I'm very happy
17:49Yeah, because you're sitting with me now
17:51I know, Dad
17:53This is incredible
18:04We made it
18:06Panama City, early doors
18:08Arriving into the capital after their overnight bus
18:11Molly and Tyler
18:13We've had a toilet wash
18:15Yes
18:16We smell fresh
18:17Ish
18:18We smell fresh
18:19Ish
18:20And we need to find where we can get this ticket
18:21To the Gunayala Islands
18:23Yeah
18:24The only way for tourists to get safely to Colombia without flying
18:27Is to take a 4x4 transfer from the capital to the Panamanian coast
18:32Followed by a boat journey through Gunayala to the border
18:35In here
18:37In here
18:38Let's go
18:41Hola
18:42We're trying to cross the Gunayala to get into Colombia
18:46Habla Inglés poquito
18:48No
18:49Le voy a dar un teléfono
18:52Gracias
18:53Hola
18:54Hola
18:55Hola
18:56Can you please take us to Gunayala?
18:58Sure
18:59Okay, excellent
19:00Thank you very much
19:01I can do that
19:02And how much will it cost?
19:04The price?
19:05Yeah
19:06It's $155 per person
19:11$155 per person?
19:13Yeah, you're paying it directly, $155 each
19:17Okay
19:18And that's the best price?
19:20That's the best price
19:21Wow
19:22That is absolutely spend dog
19:26Oh God
19:29Right
19:32My life savings have just gone
19:35Mmm
19:38That is basically our whole leg budget
19:41Yeah
19:42That's the most expensive thing we've paid for
19:45There's nothing we can do
19:47Oh, we're such a curveball
19:49I mean, thank God we saved that we can spend that money
19:56To reach the port, a 120km journey that winds around the sandblast mountains to the Guna coast
20:07We are in the sticks, man
20:10And there's nothing but jungle
20:12Mm-hmm
20:13It makes you think how hard it is to get to the border and the coast
20:18What the Darien Gap is actually like and how it's so inaccessible
20:22Yeah, trying to go through this any other way would be a wild journey
20:28There's just so much bush
20:32This is boss level winding road
20:34This is helter-skelter thought park
20:42Right, don't be sick in the car, basically
20:44Now he said it
20:45No, you don't, honey
20:48Imagine what a ball like tarmac in this is
20:51Yes
20:54Let's go
20:55Let's go
20:56Let's go
21:01Are you the captain?
21:02Yes
21:03Captain
21:04Oh, okay
21:05This boat?
21:06Yeah
21:07Oh
21:09It's absolutely tiny
21:11This boat is safe, right?
21:12Yeah
21:13Is it fast boat?
21:14Rapido?
21:15Yeah
21:16Excellent
21:17That's all we need right now
21:18Let's go
21:20Let's go
21:21To the island
21:22Passage through the Gunayala is limited to daylight hours only
21:26It's got a bit of oomph
21:27Oh my God
21:29Thank God this seat's got a bit of cushion
21:31Nighttime presents the danger of rough seas and shallow reefs
21:35As well as an increased risk of cartel activity
21:41This is the toughest journey at sea of the biggest waves I've ever seen in my life
21:49Woo
21:51Lord of mercy right now upon our souls
21:53You have to have a strong stomach first
21:56Whoa
21:57It's proper pirate life please
21:58I thought we paid for a luxury cruise
21:59What?
22:00You okay?
22:01I'm a bit uneasy right now I'd say
22:02I'm not living my best life, you know?
22:03Yeah, you'll be okay
22:05I thought you were holding on to me and I realised you were just holding the money belt
22:22Yeah, keep that precious
22:24Fighting for my life against these waves and you're worried about the bloody money belt
22:28Oh
22:30This is proper adventure
22:33Whoo
22:41Going at a less urgent pace
22:44Oh, see that blue
22:45Oh my gosh, it's coming towards us
22:47That's blue
22:48Whoa
22:49Shit
22:50Dylan and Jackie are exploring the highlands of western Panama
22:55Holly and Roman are definitely ahead of us
22:57But are they experiencing anything like this?
22:59We don't know
23:01Hidden away deep in the cloud forest
23:03Oh, wow
23:05The Haguata waterfall
23:10Look at this guy
23:11No way
23:12Locals and travellers come to swim in its clear pools
23:15And for the brave
23:17The opportunity to jump from its eight metre high ledge
23:21I'd be so scared
23:22Dad would be straight in the water now
23:24We'd make a big splash
23:28Oh my gosh
23:32Let's go to the kiddie pool
23:34That's more our speed
23:39Well, that's divine
23:40When I'm in nature
23:41When I'm in nature
23:42I feel like I'm close to heaven or something
23:47I think through losses I have, I feel closer to them
23:54When I'm in those moments of serenity and beauty
23:58That's amazing
24:00That's amazing
24:02When I was 22 I met my first husband
24:04I was due to have James, my first son
24:0719th December
24:09And on the 21st of December
24:13There was a knock at the door
24:15And there was two fluorescent jackets
24:18They said
24:20They said
24:21We just want to let you know
24:22That your husband has been knocked over by a car
24:25And killed instantly
24:30I had James
24:31And I found it very difficult on my own
24:37I eventually got my act together and got on in life
24:40And coped
24:41And I met Barry
24:45Who I married
24:48I've never swum near a waterfall before
24:50It's so clear, the water
24:52It is, isn't it?
24:55We had Cameron
24:57And then ten and a half months later
24:59Dylan came around
25:00So I had three little boys under three
25:02It was absolute chaos
25:08Are you missing Dad?
25:09Yeah, I am
25:11But I actually think Dad not being here
25:13Has made me push the boundaries of me as a person
25:16And made me grow
25:18Yeah
25:19Because I've always relied on Dad to do things for me
25:22Exactly
25:23We've had our little moments of braveness on our own
25:26It's cemented our bond even more
25:28And we support each other with James and things, you know
25:32And it's been tough
25:35Losing two people very close in my life
25:39Definitely has changed me as a person
25:43When James had gone
25:45I was internalising it, trying to be brave
25:48And put brave face on for boys
25:50It took me a while to be strong again
25:53But I've had to be strong
25:56As a mother to my boys
25:58I just want to say thank you so much for everything
26:02And it needs a lot
26:03Of course I do
26:04It's done
26:05I just don't think about it
26:06I just
26:07Would always
26:08Help you and love you and protect you
26:10Yeah
26:11And I want to protect you now
26:12You know
26:13I want to protect you
26:14And just
26:15Yeah, like
26:17You deserve the world
26:18You're the best mum
26:19I don't think I'm the best mum
26:20I don't think I'm the best mum
26:21I don't think I'm the best mum
26:22No, you are
26:23You are
26:24I'm really proud of the way you've grown up
26:26And probably you don't need me anymore now
26:29I know
26:30I know
26:31Yeah
26:32I always need my mum
26:33Always need momma
26:34Oh my gosh
26:40That is the most beautiful sand I've ever seen in my life
26:47After over an hour at sea
26:49Molly and Tyler are making a pit stop
26:52We've got to jump off on here
26:54It's too special not to
27:00Thank you
27:01Gunayala is made up of a narrow strip of shoreline
27:05On the fringes of the Darien Gap
27:07As well as more than 350 islands in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean
27:14How on earth did ants get here?
27:17That's crazy
27:18They're so crafty
27:20Babe, look at this
27:22Oh, it's another level
27:24Isn't it?
27:25Wow
27:26LOS
27:28What?
27:29Oh, piss off
27:31You idiot
27:32You absolute idiot
27:34After the Spanish colonised Colombia
27:36In the 1500s
27:37The Guna population gradually migrated towards the San Blas Islands
27:42Eventually renaming the region Gunayala
27:45There are no luxury hotels or resorts
27:49And outsiders are banned from owning property
27:52I've literally never ever in my life been somewhere this remote
27:57I don't quite get it
27:59I don't quite get it
28:00Yeah
28:01Roman and Harley Moon are docking on the 168 metre long Mendigua Island
28:07This is wild
28:10They're staying with the Tejada family
28:13Who have lived here for generations
28:15Along with her menagerie of dogs, chickens and pigs
28:20Hi
28:21Hello
28:22How's the name of the house?
28:23Hello
28:24Hello
28:25Hello
28:26Hello
28:27Hello
28:28Hey ma'am
28:29Oh
28:30Hello
28:31Hello
28:32Hello
28:33Hello
28:34And here is the name of Guna Yala, is it correct?
28:41Sorry for my Spanish.
28:43Guna is for us, Tules, or Aborigines.
28:47Yeah.
28:48Yala is, all this mountain is Yala.
28:51People are Gunas.
28:53Gunas?
28:54In London, my football team is the name of Gunas.
29:00Yes?
29:01Yes.
29:02Yes.
29:03It's us and all.
29:05It's Gunas.
29:08They are my family.
29:15Gunas is Spanish or no?
29:17No, it's the dialect of Gunas.
29:19The dialect of Gunas, yes.
29:21To learn is also easy.
29:22Anay, friend, friend.
29:24Yes.
29:25Anay.
29:26You are my friend, Anay.
29:28Anay.
29:29In English, it's mate.
29:30Mate?
29:31Mate.
29:32Mate.
29:33I feel so far from home being on this island, but it's nice to be in a family environment,
29:40to be honest.
29:41There's a wolf here.
29:43W-S-Y-C.
29:46Very good.
29:47Very good.
29:48Very good.
29:49I think I'm very much in love with you, pig.
30:02If I stay here for the rest of my life with this pig and Roman, we'd probably do okay.
30:08All right, then.
30:0935 kilometres ahead, Molly and Tyler are the closest team to Colombia.
30:19But with boats restricted from travel after dark, they're bedding down on Isla de Pinos.
30:25Sunset on an island.
30:29We've smashed it.
30:30It's actually blowing my mind that we've been travelling for 27 hours.
30:36So it feels like a massive weight lifted to be on this island.
30:41Moles, they've got hammocks.
30:44Um, okay.
30:46Hola.
30:47Can we stay here?
30:49Yeah?
30:50Yeah.
30:51Okay.
30:53Well, there's a touch.
30:54This is, this is it.
30:55I can do this.
30:56This is vibes.
30:57This is true island living.
30:59What is that?
31:00Is that an ant?
31:01This is the first night I've ever spent in a hammock in my whole entire life.
31:16Um, Molly's hammock is nicely protected with a mosquito net.
31:20My mosquito net is on me like it's my wedding day.
31:23There's no lights.
31:25There's no electricity.
31:26There's just the sounds of the waves and the sun that's going to wake us up.
31:31And that's quite actually special but scary at the same time.
31:34But this is the most we've ever felt alone.
31:38How are you doing, Moles?
31:40Not great.
31:41Yeah.
31:42You're protected though, innit?
31:43Not really.
31:44Okay.
31:45Over on Mandingua Island.
31:57This has actually been a really special place for us to stop.
32:14There's not a TV, there's not a radio,
32:18it's just animals and family.
32:21I think coming to places like this are really good for people like me,
32:25you know, who sometimes can get lost in our own world.
32:28What's so funny is that you could feel like you're in the middle of nowhere,
32:32but you'll still find siblings performing for guests.
32:35Yeah, we used to do everything.
32:37It just reminds me of us singing Craig David.
32:40Doing dance routines, Shaggy wasn't me.
32:44Gracias, amigos.
33:01Hola. Gracias.
33:03Dylan and Jackie are the last team to depart Panama City for Colombia.
33:07Quanta cuesta?
33:09Three hundred and ten dollars.
33:11So, one hundred and fifty-five each.
33:16Three hundred...
33:17Yeah, yeah, okay.
33:18Well, we'll just have to play it.
33:20That's anonymised.
33:22Kind of looking forward to leaving Panama now,
33:25because of so much expenses.
33:28One step ahead of them, Anita and Bal.
33:33Ready?
33:34To Pele.
33:35Setting off on a crossing that can take as long as eight hours.
33:39Woo!
33:40It's a little bumpy.
33:42A bit bumpy, yes.
33:43But very good fun.
33:45Well, we like rollercoasters.
33:47We do love a rollercoaster.
33:51In an ideal world, we get to check point tonight.
33:54Yeah.
33:55Let's hope it's a quick, smooth trip.
33:57But I have no idea how long the journey is.
34:00Maybe three or four hours, I don't know.
34:02Fingers crossed.
34:03Yeah, yeah.
34:05At the front of the park, Molly and Tyler.
34:13Do you feel like jumping back into the race?
34:15Not just yet.
34:18Oh, look at that.
34:20That's a proper traditional fisherman.
34:24I could catch a fish.
34:25You've never been fishing?
34:26I've never been fishing, but that don't matter.
34:28It's about mindset.
34:29Okay.
34:30Buenos dias.
34:33My bro.
34:34Can you show me how to fish?
34:36You teach me.
34:37Okay, let's go.
34:39The Guna people live as their ancestors did.
34:42Farming and fishing sustainably in Ulus,
34:46hand-crafted wooden canoes.
34:49Como te llamas?
34:50D'Amelio.
34:51D'Amelio?
34:52Si.
34:53Me llamo Daila.
34:54Daila.
34:55Right, I'm going to give this a go.
34:56Come on then.
34:58Fishing is the least South London thing I could ever imagine myself doing.
35:04I never knew what it was like to grow up in, like, a nuclear household.
35:07My mum brought me and my brother up all on her own.
35:10She's done everything for us.
35:12You just gotta drag it.
35:14Ma farte, ma farte.
35:15I never knew what it was like to not see my mum work multiple jobs.
35:20Come on, Ty.
35:21We wouldn't be able to say a quarter fish.
35:23My mum would take us out and we'd go to, like, the supermarket at, like, midnight.
35:26She would say, we're gonna play a game.
35:28Who can find the cheapest dinner?
35:29And at the time, me and my brother are running around, like, yeah, we're running wild in the aisles.
35:32Like, it's like supermarket suite.
35:34And then we'd go home for whatever we could afford.
35:36And then she'd make the dinner and then she'd tuck us in.
35:38And then just the reality of that situation is that she was struggling.
35:42But she never let up.
35:43Oh!
35:44Oh, my God!
35:45Molly!
35:47Molly!
35:48What?
35:49I caught a fish!
35:51Yay!
35:52Come on!
35:54Oh, my gosh.
35:55I'm holding a fish.
35:56I'm holding a fish.
35:58Yes!
35:59I knew we could do it.
36:01Oh.
36:03Oy!
36:05This is so good.
36:06Honestly.
36:07Muchas gracias.
36:09Molly Rayford!
36:11She's gonna have to marry me, isn't she?
36:14How many fish you got?
36:15I've got five.
36:16Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
36:18That's all I was talking about.
36:20I'm proud of you.
36:21Yeah?
36:23It was actually really special because, like, I've never had that growing up.
36:28Like, going out, learning how to fish and stuff like that.
36:30And it's one thing that I know, as a dad, one day, I would love to be able to take my kids out and say,
36:36Hey, come on, let's go fishing.
36:38I feel on top of the world.
36:39I feel on top of the island.
36:46You go out every day?
36:48Every day.
36:49Roman is also throwing himself into the Guna way of life.
36:52Joining Senor Blas to collect food supplies from his farm on the mainland,
36:57where plantain fields line the coast.
37:08We're the first?
37:09Yeah.
37:10Wow.
37:16It's, er, snakes here.
37:21Just like that he's got the knife and I've got the handbag.
37:26This feels like a proper step into the jungle.
37:31This is hard work.
37:32These plantains are not light either.
37:36It's a really nice feeling.
37:37You're not thinking about anything and you've just got, just got a job to do.
37:41It is kind of a nice break from your own brain, I guess.
37:47You know, there's been moments in my life where I didn't even want to be here anymore.
37:51And things like this just make me think, if I had made different decisions,
37:55I never would have seen this.
37:57And I never would have experienced this and I never, you know,
38:02Yeah, this shows that there's stuff worth living for.
38:07You know?
38:16It was a bad time in my life.
38:17I remember one moment in particular where, where it was really bad.
38:26I just remember my mum passing the phone to Harley and Harley trying to just talk to me.
38:34Um, just to, I guess, distract me and keep me on the phone so that my mum could get in the car and drive to me.
38:42I don't know if I ever actually have spoken to Harley about that call.
38:45I don't think we've ever really been ready to have that conversation.
38:50Like, it's hard to talk about, man.
38:53It's really hard.
39:01What I do know is that conversation between my mum and Harley might have saved my life on that day.
39:15It's hard.
39:16It was hard.
39:17We walked about an hour into the jungle.
39:19What was it like?
39:22I'm not used to doing stuff that removes me from everything.
39:27Yeah.
39:28But it did make me think, though.
39:31Because, obviously, you know that I've had moments in my life where I just feel like I didn't really want to be here anymore.
39:38Yeah.
39:39What's upset you?
39:46No, nothing.
39:49It's just hard because, like, we had that day where it was really bad.
39:53For me.
39:54The more that I think about it and I realise that it was you on the phone to me and...
40:02Until mum got there.
40:03I can't even remember what the conversation was.
40:18But I knew that I was safe if I stayed on the phone.
40:23And I feel bad because I never really said thanks for that.
40:26That was...
40:28Mum.
40:34I just want you to be OK.
40:38No, I appreciate it so much.
40:41Oh, I'm so sorry that I put you guys through that.
40:44It's OK.
40:46I just want you to be happy, right?
40:48You don't need to say thanks.
40:50Yeah, I know.
40:52I don't want to feel like that ever again and I don't think I will.
40:58I'm sorry that I don't tell you enough that I love you.
41:01I love you too.
41:03I love you too.
41:05I love you too.
41:07I love you too.
41:09I love you too.
41:11I love you too.
41:13I love you too.
41:15I love you too.
41:17I love you too.
41:19We've never had that conversation before.
41:21It's nice to hear him say I love you, but I know he loves me.
41:23When someone has had episodes of really bad mental health, I think you'll always worry about them.
41:32And I was worried about him coming out here and he's really turned it around and he's doing great and I'm really proud of him.
41:40It feels really freeing to have the conversation because now there's nothing lingering. We're kind of a clean slate again.
41:50And I think this place will always kind of be special to Harley and I.
41:56All right, let's get back on the boat.
41:59Let's get back on the boat.
42:02It's one of those places you want to take one last look.
42:04I like it.
42:10Can you get in?
42:11Yes.
42:12Right, back to it.
42:14Aww.
42:16That was amazing.
42:24All four teams are now back at sea, but with Colombian immigration closing before dusk, there's urgency to get to the border.
42:35We will get there.
42:37We will.
42:39Oh, my gosh.
42:41He's got into boy racer mode now.
42:44What's going on?
42:46Senor, why have we stopped?
42:49I stopped.
42:51Until when? What time? No more.
42:53It's getting dark.
42:55Quanto tiempo to Colombia?
42:57No, sir, you don't know.
42:59This is it.
43:01They're sleeping overnight.
43:03Anita and Bal have travelled as far as they can safely before night falls.
43:07We've been deserted on a desert island.
43:12The adventure continues.
43:1470 kilometres behind...
43:17I haven't seen the Colombian flag yet.
43:19Mother and son are also dropping anchor.
43:22Yeah.
43:24Alright, let's go figure out how to get to Medellin.
43:27Hola, English? English?
43:29Si?
43:31We're looking to get to Medellin.
43:34Medellin?
43:35Colombia?
43:36Si, si.
43:38Long way away.
43:39Long way away.
43:40We're not in Colombia?
43:41No.
43:42Oh.
43:43Panama.
43:44Panama still.
43:48Oh, okay.
43:49Okay.
43:51Alright.
43:52I thought we were in Colombia.
43:53I thought...
43:54Well...
43:55Okay.
43:57I don't understand where the heck we are.
44:02Hola? Hello? English?
44:03Yeah.
44:04Yes? Oh, hi.
44:05Where are we?
44:06I could start from Panama.
44:08Yeah?
44:09Right here.
44:10Where D is.
44:11Oh.
44:12Okay.
44:13Okay.
44:14So, we're trying to get to Medellin.
44:16Oh, Colombia.
44:17Yeah, but we don't know how to get to Colombia.
44:19You've got to first get to shore.
44:21Oh, right.
44:23We're on an island, are we?
44:24How did you guys get here?
44:26By boat.
44:27Well, we got here by boat, but we have no idea.
44:30Dylan and Jackie are still in Gunayala on Nargana Island,
44:35170 kilometres from the Colombian border.
44:38We're going to figure this out.
44:40It is brain-rattling that we've landed here,
44:44and it's not where we thought it was,
44:47and we don't know how the heck to get to Colombia,
44:50but I'm going to try and keep positive.
44:53Hola?
44:54Colombia, see?
44:56What time does it go?
45:01It goes... stays here today?
45:03Okay.
45:06We might be a bit screwed.
45:08We're in the final country.
45:16Oh, my days.
45:18We made it.
45:20This is nuts.
45:24Molly and Tyler are the first team to land on Colombian shores.
45:27We made it by the skin of our teeth, because immigration is literally just closed, so someone's looking down at us. We just got to get through Colombia now.
45:40Okay.
45:41Okay.
45:43This looks like a hostel.
45:46On the other side of the border...
45:48Oh.
45:49Hola, Juanes.
45:50No, no, no.
45:51Go to the border.
45:53Go to the border.
45:56Tomorrow?
45:578?
45:588 o'clock?
45:598 o'clock.
46:00Oh, OK. OK. Great.
46:03We literally got here just after 5 o'clock,
46:06so we just missed the stamp-out time, which is a bit gutting,
46:10so we'll have to get at it tomorrow.
46:12It's going to be a big day tomorrow.
46:14We'll just be there as early as possible.
46:16I want to be at the front of that queue.
46:18Yeah.
46:22Hola. Gracias. Gracias.
46:24Gracias.
46:25Farthest away, stuck on Nargana Island,
46:29and Dylan and Jackie have secured a room for the night.
46:33This past couple of days has completely annihilated our budget now.
46:38We're going to have to be canny and careful to get to the end.
46:42I had no idea how difficult doing the race was going to be.
46:47The confusion of, are we in Colombia, are we in Panama?
46:51That was, yeah, quite a tough pill to swallow.
46:55We were almost at breaking point there.
46:58But, yeah, we're just trying our best to power through.
47:06We still don't know how many hours we've got to go to get to Colombia.
47:10We have no idea where we are.
47:11A desert island in the middle of nowhere.
47:14However, tomorrow, I am switching into another gear.
47:18Whatever it takes, I'm going to get us to the checkpoint tomorrow.
47:23Oh, all right, here we go.
47:26Good night, Dad.
47:28Good night.
47:31Oh, I hope you don't snore tonight, Dad.
47:32I don't snore.
47:33You have this tiny little snores.
47:35Shush, I do not snore.
47:37Stop fibbing about me.
47:38Shush, shush, Dad.
47:39I don't snore.
47:40You have this tiny little snores.
47:41Shush.
47:42I do not snore.
47:43Stop fibbing about me.
47:44Shush, shush, Dad.
47:45There's an 8 a.m. boat.
48:01Let's get it.
48:02Gracias.
48:07We're back on a boat.
48:09Still a bit bumpy.
48:10It's all right.
48:11But it's better.
48:12I had a good feeling about today.
48:14Teams have one last boat trip across the Gulf of Urabah.
48:19From here, they can head directly by road to the checkpoint.
48:25This is moving pretty quick.
48:27If we get to the end of second one first, it would have been worth it.
48:30Just to taste it at least once.
48:32One, two, three.
48:34Yeah, I'm up.
48:35Arriving at immigration, Anita and Bal looking to close the gap.
48:40What's the border crossing, is this?
48:42Let's get our passport stamped and let's get into Colombia.
48:4660 kilometres behind.
48:48Feels like Panama's not letting us go.
48:51Whoa, look at that.
48:54No way.
48:55Bloody hell.
48:56Look at those lungs.
48:58That's amazing.

49:05Finally reaching dry land.
49:06We're here.
49:07Yeah!

49:10I'm a bit windswip.
49:11Get our bags and find the bus station.
49:12Now we need to find a bus.
49:13An express bus.
49:14Oh.
49:15Oh, mate.
49:16Garmin message, what?
49:17Don't send me back the other way.
