00:00I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
00:30Welcome again to The Big Match.
00:44And today we have three matches that vitally affect the tops of the first three divisions.
00:48From Division I, Everton against the leaders, Queen's Park Rangers.
00:51From the second division, our main match, Chelsea, against Cup semi-finalist Southampton themselves in the running for promotion.
00:57From the third division, Grimsby Town against those other Cup semi-finalists, Crystal Palace, more determined than ever to make this a promotion year as well.
01:04But first we go across to Stamford Bridge where close on 30,000 fans turned up, many of them no doubt attracted by the Southampton double act of Mike Shannon on the left and former Chelsea star Peter Osgood.
01:14And for Peter Osgood, this was his first league visit to Stamford Bridge since he was sold to Southampton two years ago.
01:19Chelsea faces have changed. Relative newcomers, number nine, Steve Finiston, ten, Ken Swain, making his first home appearance to number eleven, Wade Lewington.
01:27An 18-year-old Londoner. They face Mike Shannon on this Southampton side, strengthened in defence by the return of Jim Steele, who's been down with months.
01:34If only Southampton had shown a moderate degree of form away from home, they'd be certainties for promotion.
01:39A banner in the crowd tells Peter Osgood that there's still a good deal of warmth for him here at Stamford Bridge, and indeed Southampton have made him captain for the day against his old club.
01:47The referee today, Malcolm Sinclair from Guilford in Surrey.
01:50So Chelsea get us away in their strip of blue with white stockings, attacking the goal to our left.
02:01Southampton in red and white stripes and black shorts, and David Peach getting up there.
02:07Gary Stanley couldn't quite give it into play, and it'll be a throw to Southampton,
02:10who's away form has really let them down for so long this season.
02:16Otherwise, they really would have been even deeper in the promotion race than they are at the moment.
02:21They're on the fringes of it, and badly wanting a good result today.
02:24Quite a clash there between Locke and Gilchrist.
02:36Both sprawling, it was a very clumsy old clash there.
02:45Quite a bump.
02:46Seven minutes gone and no score, and still people, the late arrivals coming.
02:59Of course, it's getting a good view, too.
03:07A sign now for a stretcher to come in from the tunnel.
03:11Don't know which of those two players it is.
03:13It really was a very nasty clash, indeed.
03:27Eddie McCready coming as well.
03:31Eddie McCready looking a good deal concerned.
03:38Clearly, there is rather a nasty clash there.
03:43And the share, they're shouting for Gary Locke.
03:49So, Gary Locke goes off.
03:50And it'll be Bill Garner, the substitute, who comes on.
04:09And at least, for Southampton's point of view, Paul Gilchrist is all right.
04:24Number four.
04:27Wicks.
04:27Oh, Shannon doing well.
04:31He was having his shirt tugged by Wicks, and it's got to be a free kick to Southampton.
04:34Quite right.
04:36A smile from Shannon.
04:38It's treatment that I regret to say that he's used to.
04:41So, McAliog will try and pierce this wall.
04:57All of 35 yards out, Rodrigues driving it in low.
05:00It'll come to Jim McAliog again, rifling it through, but wide of that Chelsea post.
05:04Hey, finding Stanley.
05:20Ball in play still.
05:22And it's with Lewington.
05:22Now with Harris.
05:29Trying to get a one-two going, and he was a little lucky to find it back again.
05:32Curling it in there.
05:33Steele away.
05:35Gilchrist away.
05:39Stokes.
05:40And there goes Shannon.
05:42Hay is with him.
05:43Good play by David Hay.
05:44Oh, and good play again by Hay, and a foul by Osgood on Hay.
06:09Well, one or two good dashes by Mike Shannon, but he's been very, very closely marked, as he would expect to be.
06:14Well, Southampton have pushed one or two forward.
06:21Here's Swain.
06:25Danger, though, of an offside, yes, and the Lionsman was just waiting to put that flag up.
06:31And a good decision there by the referee, allowing the advantage to be played.
06:35The Lionsman absolutely right.
06:36Wilkins was offside, but here's Shannon.
06:39Stopped by Biff.
06:40It's time for Mikhailov towards Peter Osgood.
07:00Now Fischer going in, and Bonetti was in trouble.
07:04Osgood almost turned it back again.
07:05It came off Harris for the corner.
07:10That's as dangerous, really, as Southampton had looked all afternoon, with about three minutes to go to halftime.
07:15So, Jim McCallio, former Chelsea player, loading that one in towards Bonetti, Osgood right in there on the back of Bonetti.
07:24Free kick.
07:26Crowd didn't like that action by Osgood.
07:28And Bonetti in a bit of trouble, and remember, they've already got Gary Locke off, and they're substituted on.
07:43Kelly Oaks free kick.
07:45Osgood coming in hard behind Peter Bonetti.
07:48Well, there's an interlude.
07:56Mike Shannon trying to put a few things right about Southampton coming forward.
08:01But Bonetti.
08:03He's fortunate that he's so close to halftime, and if he can survive out there for a couple of minutes or so, he can get some more treatment.
08:09His skipper, Ray Wilkins, number eight, pleased to see that he's okay to go on.
08:13Very pleased with the way the game's gone, although it's still nil-nil.
08:26Stokes coming away fast from Wilkins.
08:30Here's Gilchrist, last second of the first half, because he played nearly four minutes of injury time.
08:34Brought down from behind that time by Hay.
08:37Shannon felt that one.
08:43Certainly it hasn't been a very happy return so far to Stamford Bridge for Peter Osgood.
09:07He's been booed by the crowd that used to adore and admire him.
09:11And he's really made no headway at all against this young Chelsea defence.
09:17That's going to be a worrying sight for all Southampton fans.
09:21But he's going to go on.
09:28Southampton's free kick.
09:29Nearly five minutes of injury time played now.
09:33David Peaches free kick in towards Osgood.
09:35Nodded down again.
09:36That was the first time they'd been in real trouble.
09:38And a play-off shot way over.
09:39Referee looking at that watch for half-time.
09:45Well, Mr. Sinclair's added now exactly five minutes of injury time.
10:00Basically for the injury to Gary Locke and the knock that Peter Panetti had.
10:05But now it is half-time before Peter Panetti can take that goal kick.
10:08After a very disappointing first half.
10:12And the fact that Southampton have made a little progress down to the excellent defence of young Steve Wicks.
10:17And to David Haye, apart from one rather bad tackle on Mike Shannon in the last couple minutes of the first half.
10:23But he's certainly at number six has watched Mike Shannon extremely well.
10:28So a half-time score then at Stamford Bridge that reads Chelsea nil, Southampton nil.
10:35We'll be right back with the second half.
10:36Welcome back then to Stamford Bridge.
10:48Mike Shannon, who was injured just before the interval.
10:51Looks okay again.
10:52In fact, he's got a new shirt on as well.
10:55We saw that it was ripped in the first half.
10:57Nil-nil then.
10:59And let's hope the second half is a good deal better than the first.
11:01Stamford Bridge, which was muddled.
11:04Not very much to worry either, goalkeeper.
11:10Southampton's away form, as I said at the start, has not been very good.
11:14They've really...
11:15Only had two away wins at West Bromwich and at Oxford.
11:20Ministon took that beautifully on his body.
11:24On each way.
11:27Britain got a dart after that one.
11:29Trying to get round behind Blythe.
11:32Kept it in play.
11:34Nice to have been a play there by Ian Britton.
11:36Here's Hammers.
11:37Calling for a good, accurate cross.
11:38Getting it as well as Garner goes in.
11:40But it's wide.
11:41Nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been a good, nice to have been
12:11Stanley, good acceleration by him, not a bad cross either, but unfortunately for Chelsea, their players have gone just a little too deep into that area, but they're swaying, winning it well, played back for Garner, and right across the face of that Southampton goal, wanting the touch that he didn't quite get.
12:29So a goal kick, one of the better Chelsea moves that didn't quite get the finishing touch that was required.
12:44Now it's with Finister, brought down by Rodrigues, he claims as you can see that it was a dive, great old campaigner Peter Rodrigues when his Cardiff and his Shepard Wednesday days, when his Leicester days,
13:14and now his Southampton days, free kick to Chelsea, Britton, Swain losing his way, McCallion half getting it, and then just nicking it out here for David Peach, Shannon away on the far side, good ball there by Peach,
13:34Stokes in the middle, Shannon almost on his own, he's got Fisher up in support, look at this by Shannon, down he goes, well there's a penalty given though, it's an indirect free kick, inside the area, indirect free kick.
13:50Referee was very quick to raise his arm as you can see there, indicating an indirect free kick, and indeed the linesman was also, as he was flagging with one arm, raising it, the other arm to show an indirect free kick, just inside I think, yes just inside the area, taken there by Shannon!
14:12Well the quickness of the man eventually eluded David Hay and the Chelsea defence.
14:32A quickly taken free kick, hit low there towards the near post, Shannon was on it like a dart, into the back of the net, Chelsea nil, Southampton one, Mike Shannon the scorer.
14:4521 goals in all competitions now for him this season, and a warning indeed, for any Crystal Palace spies or fans who are here, you might think you've contained Mike Shannon, and then a moment like that happens, and he can still cause your downfall.
15:09Well that'll please him.
15:15Great backup...
15:18Barri X there, Chelsea finds light in line there, would have claimed that that hit him on the arm, certainly nothing intentional about it though, and it's a corner for Chelsea.
15:40Hey, turn nicely.
15:41Turn nicely, and the head is there and the goal is there.
15:44so in less than 90 seconds
15:59Chelsea get back on level terms
16:01and the man who missed Mike Shannon
16:05had won then, David Hay
16:06turned brilliantly there on the byline
16:09the header came in
16:10from Steve Finiston
16:11Chelsea won, Southampton won
16:13the scorer, Steve Finiston
16:16so 1-1 we stand
16:22and a much better game
16:24Peach
16:25Michalov
16:29Wilkins
16:36Garner
16:41playing it for Lewington
16:42Rodríguez there
16:45one of those fatal moments
16:49when the side struggles so hard
16:51to get into the lead
16:52and they finally take it
16:53they relax for a moment
16:54and get caught
16:55and that's probably what happened there
16:56I think Mr Sinclair
16:59want that free kick
17:00to be taken again
17:01Peach
17:06Fisher
17:11now Rodríguez
17:15exactly a quarter of an hour left now
17:29exactly a quarter of an hour left now
17:33high towards Stokes
17:42which could have been caught out there
17:44with Osgood behind him
17:45but his nerve held
17:46and his brain
17:49his footballing brain
17:50told him to nod it away
17:52for safety
17:52behind for the corner
17:53which David Feach will take
17:58who will take
17:58Stokes again making that run towards the near post
18:10hit low this time
18:11it seemed to fool everybody
18:14Fisher now to McAlewell
18:15Chelsea coming out quickly
18:17and the chance really to come out quickly as britain finds wilkins they've got plenty up in
18:21the middle if stanley could get their first swain is there too and it's hitting the goalkeeper and
18:27going behind a tremendous breakout there by chelsea britain and wilkins involved in the early stages
18:35swain taking over with a tremendous burst as southampton tried to get back
18:39goalkeeper out doing the right things and making it difficult and behind for a corner
18:47hey he's back with her osgood
19:09finished
19:11cross coming in again dana was there but no trouble for southampton
19:22wicks with the header three chelsea men are chasing after one of them is gone
19:28got fly to contend with though he took something an elbow or knee or something in the stomach there
19:34no blind on the ground
19:41and bill garner was the man
19:45running with him
19:46from that position impossible to say i don't think mr sinclair feels that it's
19:55a bad injury and that the game should go on pre-kick to southampton
19:58fly gets up
20:08about a minute to go
20:12lewington
20:12harris
20:17garner's away again and blythe again there with him whoops
20:25blind very angry there with garner and just as well that the referee was running across there i think
20:30his sixth sense must have told him that something was about to happen there and blythe being called
20:35the referee sinclair and i think it looks as though he's going to be blocked
20:42the crowd behind as you can see have got little sympathy with any uh opponent that does anything to
20:46their chelsea uh heroes and mel blithe goes into the book
21:01now playing injury time
21:11for southampton
21:12at least it's one point when they really would have wanted to but their dismal away record this
21:17season has indicated they really maybe wouldn't have expected much more than that as the final
21:21whistle goes
21:231-1 it is
21:25with a jersey goal scored by steve finiston
21:28with mike shannon having just 90 seconds before that put southampton into the lead
21:35so there are the scorers with a final score line then at stanford bridge after a rather
21:40disappointing game on the hole chelsea one southampton one well hardly a game to warm the
21:46cockles of your heart and it puts still greater pressure on southampton's bid for promotion they've
21:50now got five at home where they're almost unbeatable and four away so it could still be on
21:55after the game i spoke to the goal scorers steve finiston and mike shannon and i suggested to mike
22:00shannon that it had not been a very good southampton performance
22:04i thought at times we played well and i always thought we were likely to score but after saying
22:07that i didn't think i didn't think we we were good overall you know because you got a bad away
22:12record haven't you we have we've you know we've played well away from home and lost you know
22:17we didn't play as well today and we got a point it's a funny game david haye looked after you
22:21pretty tidily i thought for most of the time yeah i thought he played very well you know i always
22:26rated him a little bit you know and uh i think that's probably his best position you know sweeper
22:30he's picking things up and uh he was never really under pressure was he you know how come you lost him
22:35in that free kick though um a little bit sharp at times myself you know what about steve's goal
22:44i thought it was a great goal you know i mean probably you know we should have had someone
22:48picking him up but uh after that i mean he stuck it away great great i think the chelsea fans were
22:55glad to see a number nine scoring a goal particularly with peter osgood coming back the old number nine
22:59yeah i think so i've uh scored one last week as well against blackburn i'm just uh pleased they got
23:04the chance at last yes what do you feel about chelsea's form this this season steve it's been
23:09a bit inconsistent hasn't it yes it has but the past four games we won the last three and considering
23:14we lost gary lott in the first half that disrupted us a bit i thought we we did quite well i thought
23:19the point was the least we deserved yeah do you still think you're in with a whisper for promotion or is
23:24that uh is that out of the question now do you think um well i think it all depends on a lot
23:31of teams slipping up all the top teams if we keep winning we must have a very small chance i think
23:38as a young side when you come and play against a side like southampton with people like peter osgood
23:42and with mick in it as well do you find you're learning all the time as a youngster yes well it
23:47always it's a lot better than the reserves you must improve playing against better players
23:51but i think we're playing well i thought we met sean hampton tonight do you reckon yes i thought
23:58it was it was a very even type of game i always felt that we were more likely to score than what they
24:02were you know but after saying that isn't the lad score a great goal didn't i mean i wish i'd scored it
24:07two nil i didn't think they'd score myself but i didn't think they'd score i didn't think i uh
24:15looked all that dangerous except when it got in there it was a bit sharp then how would you fancy
24:20against crystal palace now steve in the cup uh well i think they're a better team than crystal
24:26palace i think they'd be crystal palace but there again it's in london so crystal palace
24:32have a lot of the support you wouldn't argue with that would you no i think he's quite right
24:38no it'll be a i think it'll be a different game altogether you know and i think that in what way
24:43well i think i think basically it's on the day you know i mean
24:45it and uh the cup's a funny game and it's not always the best side win in this game is it
24:50and i think that uh you know if we put it together i think i think we've got we've got a very good
24:54chance yeah but after saying that crystal palace are a good side like he said and on their day they're
25:00a very good side you know what would you like to say to big mal at the moment nothing really
25:07well i think one other point to emphasize from that game although in all honesty mick shannon's already
25:11done so was the brilliant marking of the england striker there by david hay disciplined and for the
25:16most part very fair indeed that picture of togetherness really capsuled their afternoon
25:20and i think if willie allman is watching it's worth adding that david hay looked a genuine scottish
25:25international again good to see and i'm sure you'd also like to know the latest news of gary lock the
25:30chelsea fullback who was carried off in that game yesterday in fact he was kept in hospital
25:34overnight with severe concussion bruising above the eye he hurt his shoulder into the bargain but the
25:39hospitals say that they're hopeful that he might be out tomorrow
25:51more action and for that we go to goodison park for everton against the team that started the day at
25:55the top of the first division london's own queens park rangers the pictures come from granada television
25:59the commentators gerald sinstat rangers are the team in the red and white halves dobson again masson harrying
26:09lions hollins tackle didn't take and lions let's go tremendous work there but gary jones was taken by
26:18surprise by the first save from phil parks tremendous drive from all of 30 yards parks on the edge of his
26:28six yard area did very well to get down and block it with his arm and gary jones following up couldn't get
26:34get it in the net clement
26:43clement gets over a good cross and lawson makes a good save
26:51very well cut out from a real winner's cross from fullback dave clement
26:56connelly
27:03no foul says mr reeves
27:05masson
27:06hollins sprinting
27:10it's thomas on the left and bowls in the middle thomas set himself for the shot but it was blocked by
27:16mcnaught
27:21bernard
27:25dobson
27:28buckley
27:31and up by hollins
27:36masson
27:39clement
27:39give us
27:48web
27:59brought to david jones
28:00dobson
28:05now ball
28:05micky expected dobson to run with it
28:12francis
28:14balls trying to play the one two lions clears intercepted by gillard now hamilton
28:22no space
28:24he did well he's come out left for dobson
28:30connelly
28:31chance to run up mcclintock
28:33mcclintock blocked the cross mcclintock gets it back
28:38dobson
28:39and again clarks it across
28:41well worked
28:46setting it up between connelly and dobson and dobson's shot brilliantly met by parks
28:52he gets down so fast for such a big man
28:57corner from gary jones
29:01lions there meeting it
29:04on the way by hollins back in by connelly but well wide
29:11oh there'll be a lot of thinking going on on those benches that's steve burtenshaw
29:24on the right there with the moustache the everton coach
29:26bowles
29:36masson trying to break stop by bernard lions
29:40bowls
29:41hamilton
29:43francis
29:45thomas
29:47clement
29:49got into a good position and was given a good pass nice little chip across two and there's the goal
29:54the goal from bowls
30:01stan bowls finishing off a very simple move
30:05thomas playing it on for clement who'd got a head into a good position
30:10he'd shown us earlier he could cross the ball that time he played the little low soft dink
30:15and stan bowls was running round to tap it into the net
30:27telfer couldn't get round gillard
30:30ian gillard number three there capped three times for england in the last couple of seasons
30:45the middle from buckley tipped over by parks
30:48phil parks has really looked like a goalkeeper in command dominating that six yard area
30:58and there was a deflection which took it straight into the hands of the goalkeeper
31:19and there was a deflection which took it straight into the hands of the goalkeeper
31:33thomas
31:47francis
31:51hollins
31:55masson and dobson
31:56goodless
32:03well played buckley
32:07hamilton
32:10goodless
32:11telfer got a bit of a lucky bounce there and could make the most of it
32:25it's come out of bernard and he threw it over
32:30bernard pounds the ground
32:32but he really had a chance there it was a good cross and an acrobatic leap by parks
32:41punched it out but straight to bernard and bernard struck it well over
32:49telfer
32:54webb with him
32:55but tolfer gets the crossover and in goes
33:00smothered eventually by parks but that was a brilliant bit of acceleration there by dobson
33:05good running by tolfer when he played the low cross dobson suddenly found an extra gear
33:11but the goalkeeper got down to smother the shot
33:13and the substitution now by queenspark rangers they are taking off jerry francis or wanting to take
33:30him off the referee hasn't yet called on mick leach to substitute so francis stays on
33:35and now the substitution can be made
33:46off goes the queenspark rangers and england skipper and on comes mick leach
33:53another of the men who played in both of queenspark rangers promotion sites
33:59now 29 years old
34:05it's leach and the free kick to be taken here by masson or maybe hollins they're the two men
34:16hollins is four all back i would guess about eight yards
34:20masson and with his first touch of the ball leach puts it in the net
34:34he'd been on the field as long as it took greenspark rangers to line up the free kick and what a happy
34:41man so simple don masson an expert with the dead ball just curving it over the wall and they're
34:49stealing in was leach nobody picking him up and in it went so rangers stay two points clear at the
34:58top thanks in no small measure to another wonderful display of goalkeeping by phil parks and indeed by
35:03the rangers defense as a whole and afterwards gerald sinstat spoke to phil parks about rangers
35:08authority at the back yes i think we've got one of the best defenses in the league they certainly work
35:14hard uh all the back four they've played out of their skins all season and uh well we've let 26
35:20goals in i think all season come away from london you see and people say oh webb and mclintock in
35:26the middle of the back four it's not really championship standard and yet the figures don't

43:01on the edge of the box and he has to have attention
43:14well not much doubt what crystal palace will do here they'll get swindlehurst and evans
