Apatow, who hasn’t directed a studio or narrative feature since 2015’s Amy Schumer hit 'Trainwreck,' is teaming with Pete Davidson for an untitled comedy.
Transcript
00:00It's been a really long time since Judd Apatow directed a feature film.
00:04It's been 84 years.
00:06Okay, so that's a tiny exaggeration. It's actually only been four years since
00:10The Comedy King brought us the laughs with Amy Schumer's Trainwreck,
00:13and that is long enough.
00:15I like you, Amy. You're clever, but you're not too brainy.
00:18You're pretty-ish, and you're not gorgeous. You're approachable.
00:23Now, The Funny Filmmaker is teaming up with SNL alum Pete Davidson
00:26for an untitled comedy at Universal Pictures beginning May or June.
00:30Davidson wrote the script with Apatow and Dave Cyrus and will star in what is being described as
00:34a semi-autobiographical story of Davidson growing up in Staten Island, New York.
00:39Davidson lost his firefighter father on 9-11 when he was just seven years old
00:43and has suffered the traumatic repercussions ever since.
00:46He first tried stand-up when he was 16 and became known for his stark, truthful nature
00:50on sensitive topics such as his struggles with mental illness and the loss of his beloved dad.
00:55I remember when my dad died and my mom was like,
00:57your dad's dead, but we got you a PlayStation 2.
01:00And I was like, yeah, cool.
01:02I was like, that seems about even.
01:04He became one of the youngest comedians to join SNL when he was cast on the sketch show at the age of 20.
01:10He makes an appearance in What Men Want, the Paramount comedy set to open February 8,
01:14and worked with Apatow on Trainwreck.
01:16The actor and comedian has been generating plenty of buzz for his performance in Big Time Adolescence,
01:21which premiered Monday at the Sundance Film Festival to strong reviews.
01:25The Hollywood Reporter's review called his performance in the coming-of-age dramedy
01:29so on target and disciplined, showing fine comic timing and yielding the screen when it serves the movie.
01:35Sources say the project sees Apatow doing for Davidson what he did for Schumer with Trainwreck,
01:40giving a platform for a rising comedian to play a version of themselves on a stage built with material
01:45from their own lives.
01:47Meanwhile, Apatow, who has also directed such iconic hits as The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up,
01:52last put out The Zen Diaries of Gary Shandling, the Emmy-winning documentary about the life of his late mentor.
