Jared Fynn studied architectural technology, but his real education came when he tried to furnish his own home. The result? A broken promise from a furniture maker who didn't deliver. So, Jared had to do it on his own.
00:00What do you do when your dream design is ruined by someone you trusted?
00:07For Jared Fine, it wasn't just a disappointment, it was the beginning of a movement.
00:13So you've all seen influencers starting businesses in 2025.
00:19Let's talk about if it's really marketing or making a company that's actually impactful.
00:23Can't wait to dive into this conversation with you guys. Let's get into it.
00:27Jared studied architectural technology, but his real education came when he tried to furnish his own home.
00:33The result? A broken promise from a furniture maker who didn't deliver.
00:38When I graduated, I got my first place and I couldn't wait to furnish it.
00:42You know, exactly the way that I envisioned for myself, like for it to be.
00:46And when I paid the money and what I got in return, it was just two completely different things.
00:50You know, we discussed the design and it was completely different and it was heartbreaking, you know.
00:54So Jared picked up the tools himself and posted his first reel.
00:5960,000 views later, Thought House was born.
01:02I think if you just post a picture of what it is that you do, that's great and wow, but it doesn't set you apart in any way.
01:09But if you share the authentic story of how this piece was conceptualized, how it was designed, how it was made,
01:15people immediately connect a lot more with what it is that you're doing.
01:18And to me, I think that's what's attracted quite a lot more eyes to my business.
01:22Now, Jared and his furniture production company isn't just a brand, it's a promise.
01:28Jared's mission? To restore trust in design, trust in handcrafted pieces, pieces with personality.
01:36Yeah, so the goal has always been to create the furniture that I'm really proud of and the pieces that I've always wanted in my personal home.
01:44And just by extension, when I started posting these pieces up on social media, that interest that initially came sort of made it clear that there's really a demand for this in South Africa and Johannesburg,
01:54that people want custom furniture that they just can't get anywhere else.
01:58Today, from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Jared's designs shape homes and conversations.
02:04But handmade items take time to create, and building trust isn't easy.
02:08Jared had to learn the craft, build a team, and solve technical challenges.
02:13Like a couch that changes color with heat.
02:16Going from my background in architecture, where I was designing warehouses and logistical buildings,
02:21and going into furniture, at first it might seem like quite a random jump.
02:25But from a design perspective, a lot of those key principles are the same.
02:28So designing a couch, designing a building.
02:30If you know how to sketch, and you've got like the skill of being able to sketch and express your ideas,
02:35you'll be able to get it out there. But we've learned so much on this journey.
02:38So from a design perspective, the jump was pretty natural.
02:43But then when it comes to actually having to learn all the technical skills, you just got to learn.
02:48We had to learn in like our first few years of business.
02:50Jared's biggest tool is authenticity.
02:54By sharing his process, he built a loyal following, and caught the attention of global brands.
03:00My first major collaboration with a brand through my furniture business, CloudHouse, was with my dream client, Nike.
03:07And they had just released the Air Max DN8s.
03:10And this was quite a big drop worldwide, and everyone received a similar brief.
03:15And we received a brief for a green color-changing couch.
03:19And this was a really interesting project because no one is really making couches that change color when you sit on them.
03:25It's called thermochromatics.
03:26And when you sit on the couch, the body temperature from your body reacts with the couch and it changes color.
03:34And this was, yeah, a super interesting project to get my hands dirty with and definitely a dream project of mine.
03:40We picked Jared, as I said, because I had seen him on TikTok.
03:44I think it was in the December holidays when I came across his videos.
03:48And I really liked the way that he approached his brand.
03:53I liked the way that he shot his content.
03:55And I liked the way that he was trying to do something a bit different to what I had seen before.
04:00He was also pushing his own brand and his own story of being this industrial designer who now wanted to start a furniture brand for sofas that he couldn't readily find in South Africa.
04:13I was also pleased to hear that when we contacted him and he mentioned that Nike was one of the clients that he had always dreamed of working with.
04:22So it was really cool to help him also tell that story.
04:26And I guess also seeing, you know, something that was online now in real life was actually really amazing.
04:33Now as an Adidas ambassador and a design voice for a new generation, Jared is redefining what collaboration means.
04:41I think collaboration has always been important.
04:44It'll continue to be important.
04:45And it's something that's sort of slept on in South Africa.
04:50And I hope to see more creative people get together and collaborate and not just among creative people.
04:55I think business owners and influencers should collaborate more.
04:59I think tech startups and influencers should collaborate.
05:02Business mind and marketing.
05:04You don't always need to go ahead and create something brand new and do it alone.
05:08If you are someone who has a complimentary mind in your circle, I think that's someone you should collaborate on.
05:15And I think we're going to see more influencers collaborate with tech startups, for example, because the one is great at engineering and the one is great at marketing.
05:24And I'm really excited to see how that's going to play out.
05:26Jared Find's journey from disappointment to design icon proves that sometimes the best brands are born from broken promises.
05:35Not broken promises.
05:36By clicking on ciento.
