00:00Oh What Fun! Review a Funny Earnest Christmas Crowd Pleaser
00:03Christmas movies are a delicate ecosystem. Lean too hard into the saccharine and you end up with
00:09hallmark drivel. Lean too hard into the chaos and you lose the heart. Oh What! Fun manages to
00:14thread this needle with surprising grace, delivering a film that is fun to the brim,
00:19devoid of cynicism and genuinely earnest. It's a chaotic, stylized love letter to the holiday
00:25season that feels like a semi-classic in the making, mostly because it remembers the one
00:30person who usually makes the magic happen, the mom. Oh What Fun! Review
00:35Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Claire Closter, the matriarch who is the glue holding her chaotic
00:40family together. After meticulously planning a special outing her family makes the fatal mistake
00:44of forgetting her entirely. Fed up she sets off on her own impromptu adventure leaving her husband
00:49Denny's leery and adult children to scramble through the city to find her. It's a simple premise but
00:54the execution is where the film shines. It's fun and chaotic, a little odd because the main premise
01:00doesn't fully kick in until halfway through, but the joy is in the journey.
01:05Pfeiffer rocks, she's the undeniable anchor of the film, balancing the comedic absurdity of her
01:09situation with moments that are genuinely devastating. She is unbelievably strong, portraying
01:13a woman pushed to the brink who decides to survive the best holiday of the year on her own terms.
01:17But she isn't the only standout. Dominic Sessa, fresh off the holdovers, a true modern Christmas
01:22classic, is the real star outside of Pfeiffer. He plays Sammy, one of Claire's children and he
01:28steals every scene he's in. It's fun to see him in another role that lets him be this loose and
01:33comedic. The supporting cast is a murderer's row of talent. Clyde Grace Mortz plays Taylor and is very
01:39funny. Jason Schwartzman is excellent as Doug bringing his signature dry wit. Havana Rose Liu is
01:44great as Sessa's love interest and Danielle Brooks brings her usual warmth and humor to the side cast.
01:48Felicity Jones isn't terribly interesting for most of the runtime, but by the end,
01:53she delivers a touching performance that sneaks up on you.
01:56Joan Chen, the matriarch of the opposing Wang Guasserman family, brings even more levity to the
02:01role. The only wasted character is in an incredibly small role from dropout Zach Yama, a very funny man
02:08who serves as a background piece. Visually, oh, what fun is a treat. Director Michael Schollter and
02:14cinematographer Jim Frona have crafted a movie that is shot nicely with a great sense of pace.
02:18They make bold, stylistic choices, including some fun stop-motion segments that add a layer of
02:22whimsy without feeling out of place. It consistently honors other Christmas movies, nodding to the
02:27classics while managing to genuinely stand out on its own. The music, composed by Siddhartha
02:31Kasla, is solid too. It really helps out the emotional beats, swelling at just the right
02:37moments to sell the sentiment without feeling manipulative. The emotional core is there. Each
02:43character, no matter how brief their screen time, has a nice arc. It's incredibly kind to
02:46acknowledging the invisible labor that goes into making the holidays special without becoming
02:50preachy. It bucks the potential pitfall of being bitter or mean-spirited, opting instead for a tone
02:54that is earnest and full of grace. It captures the specific madness of a family holiday, the yelling,
02:59the forgetting, the chaos, but wraps it in a warm hug.
03:02Is Oh What Fun Worth Watching?
03:05Oh What Fun is a new semi-classic holiday film about a mom pushed to the brink, surviving the best holiday of
03:10the year. It's fun, fast-paced, and full of heart. It's the kind of movie you can put on every year,
03:16the right type of crowd-pleaser that'll have you laughing at the chaos, and maybe, just maybe,
03:20make you remember to thank your mom before the credits roll.
03:23Oh What Fun is streaming on Prime Video on December 3.
