It's an honor to celebrate the Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Mentorship Program's Sweet 16.
00:13
For 16 years, this extraordinary partnership with Big Brother, Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles
00:19
and the Entertainment Industry Foundation
00:21
has changed the lives of 275 high school girls and their mentors
00:29
as well.
00:34
It is a unique sorority that includes leaders like Donna Langley, Dana Walden, Bella Bajaria
00:43
and Pamela Abdi to name but a few.
00:46
16 years ago, Stephen Galloway, now the Dean of Chapman University's Dodge College
00:52
launched this program while serving as THR's Executive Editor.
00:56
With guidance from Sherry Lansing and support from Big Brothers Big Sisters,
01:02
he and the THR staff
01:04
God, I can't breathe.
01:08
It's because my boobs are so big in this dress.
01:12
Sorry.
01:13
Good morning.
01:20
Walked into high schools across South and East LA where they found diamonds in the rough
01:27
who were overcoming obstacles like crime, drug, and alcohol abuse in the family
01:32
or the challenges of being a first-generation American
01:36
to become the first in their families to graduate high school
01:39
and the first to go to college.
01:42
And now, they are reshaping our industry.
01:45
Before we continue celebrating these remarkable young women,
01:48
I want to share a short video about this program.
01:50
When I started in the movie industry,
02:04
I think, sadly, we all believed that there was only room for one at the table.
02:09
And so, we weren't really close.
02:11
And as the years went by, we realized that that wasn't true,
02:15
that there was actually room for all of us at the table.
02:18
The mission of the mentorship program is to take young women
02:23
who are in a situation where they may not have opportunities
02:26
and lead them to the next level.
02:30
I think this program has just really helped, like, open my eyes
02:33
because I feel like there's so much more I can do
02:35
and so many more opportunities out there
02:36
that I don't have to be in my little bubble and I can just explore.
02:41
This is a group of women who welcome them with open arms
02:45
and want them to succeed in this industry.
02:48
We need diversity of voice
02:50
and women, I think, are finally at the place
02:54
as storytellers, especially in this industry,
02:57
that our stories are hugely important.
03:00
And so, supporting other women to get into the space,
03:02
to be in a position to be the decision makers
03:04
and who gets to tell those stories is important.
03:06
I think society standards kind of, like, limit the entertainment industry
03:11
and I just knew I wanted to, like, break those and kind of, like, push forward
03:15
and really reach those goals, especially as a woman.
03:18
We are no longer a small little phenomenon.
03:23
We have arrived and we are here and we're not going away.
03:28
Just knowing that I've been able to accomplish so many things
03:31
that my mom and my dad have wanted me to do
03:33
makes me so happy.
03:35
It's very personal to me because apart from being, like,
03:43
part of this new generation that's going to enter film,
03:45
I'm going to be the first in my family to get higher education.
03:48
I'm first-generation Mexican-American.
03:51
So I feel like it's up to us to document and to tell the stories.
03:56
It is imperative that we build a new Hollywood together.
04:02
We co-create that and we need to make sure
04:06
that people like Gloria are leading in the forefront
04:08
and telling us this is the Hollywood that we need so desperately.
04:17
My ultimate goal is to just be a storyteller
04:20
and just speak from a different perspective.
04:22
I've never had that specific person to mentor me
04:28
and I knew that I wanted it to be with somebody
04:30
who was fun, extroverted, but could also hold me accountable.
04:35
That's why I do the work that I do in the industry
04:38
is to make sure that exactly these kinds of stories
04:42
are the stories we get to hear.
04:44
So don't tell me you can't find somebody
04:46
because I'm like, what?
04:48
I really want to do good.
04:50
I want to do good and feel fulfilled
04:53
and then hopefully have a job too, yeah.
04:57
A lot has changed since when I started in the business.
05:00
But what hasn't changed is that talent always wins.
05:04
We're going up, up, up, up, it's our moment
05:08
You know together we're going
05:10
Gonna be, gonna be going in
05:12
Oh, up, up, up with our voices
05:16
Going together, just a woman
05:18
Gonna be, gonna be going in
05:20
Oh, I'm done hiding
05:23
Now I'm shining
05:25
Like I'm born to see
05:28
You know that it's the sun
05:30
I know
05:31
It's so nice
05:33
That's who we're born to see
05:36
We all really wanted to see that too.
05:53
Well, thank you Lifetime
06:04
for generously supporting
06:06
the mentorship program since its inception
06:08
I'm excited to share
06:10
that they're going to give
06:11
every girl graduating
06:12
from the program this year
06:14
a $10,000 scholarship
06:15
to the school of their choice
06:17
This program would not be possible
06:27
without the enormous support
06:29
of our program partners
06:30
including the Golden Globe Foundation
06:32
and Gersh
06:33
I used to be at Gersh
06:35
You guys didn't send me out much
06:42
No, I love you, Gersh
06:50
Okay, all right
06:51
Oh my God, and WME passed on me
06:55
