Kate Winslet ‘proud’ of son Joe Anders for writing her latest film Goodbye June

Actress Kate Winslet has said she is “proud” of her son Joe Anders for writing her latest film Goodbye June.The 50-year-old, who makes her directorial debut with the movie, went on to explain how she wanted to create a space where actors felt confident to input thoughts and ideas, making reference to Fisayo Akinade who plays a nurse in the film.Goodbye June is released in UK cinemas on December 12 before it will be available on streaming platform Netflix on Christmas Eve

00:00Was there a moment that you felt just most proud of your son reading through that?

00:06I felt proud of him every day. Every day. Every single day. Every single day.

00:10And in fact, for the first three weeks, he wasn't there because he was filming something as an actor overseas.

00:16And I had a little, it's almost like a, it's a little Snoopy patch.

00:21It's like a patch and it says Joe Cool on it.

00:24And I would just stick it in various different parts of my body, on my bum, on my chest, on my leg, until he came back.

00:31And I was like, oh, now you're back. I can put this pouch away because it kept falling off.

00:36And for Zayo, I mean, the work that he does in portraying a palliative care worker with such sensitivity.

00:43Well, my mum's been a carer for years for the elderly.

00:46And so it felt like I was honouring her by playing the role.

00:49And it was kind of amazing being led by Kate, because she is one of our best.

00:55And having somebody like that direct you was like, oh, I just have to do exactly as you say and it'll be brilliant.

01:01For me, as an actress, some of the most useful direction I've ever been given is when a director says,

01:06so tell me what you think. So what should we do?

01:09And you think, oh, OK.

01:11And then you feel confident enough to offer something up.

01:15And I think for Zayo, it was overwhelming initially being in a room full of heavyweights.

01:20But as soon as he realised that we're all normal and equally as terrified as he probably was,

01:25it meant that immediately he was part of the family too, and it was amazing.
