The 2026 Tesla Model Y offers a practical balance of size, driving range, and price. With some exterior styling updates, most changes are similar to those made to the refreshed Model 3, which we tested last year. Still, the Model Y remains competitive among electric SUVs, thanks to quick charging, a smoother ride, and access to Tesla's extensive Supercharger network.

00:00this is the review of the tesla model y
00:10now the version behind me is referred to as juniper by tesla during its development phase
00:15but for us at cr we're calling this a 2026 we originally tested this car in 2020 when it came
00:20out so this is the second time that we've now tested the model y now the updated version of
00:26this car follows hot on the heels of the model 3 which also saw an update just last year while the
00:32model 3 is an important car for tesla the tesla model y is even more important this is their
00:37best-selling model and at least the time of this recording one of the best-selling cars in the
00:42entire world certainly here in the us especially in terms of evs tesla has found itself in a little
00:47bit of an awkward place with its vehicles typically in the automotive industry new products and fresh
00:53things are what does really well and tesla's cars are kind of old so we saw that with the model s and
00:58the model x even the model 3 getting updates over time to keep them fresh and that's what they're
01:03trying to do here the original model y was quick and agile but the ride was pretty punishing honestly
01:09and the controls distracting hard to use since tesla is not the obvious ev choice anymore we'll
01:15see if all of the changes here go far enough to make the model y more refined and just a better experience
01:21overall we bought a 2026 tesla model y long range all-wheel drive the final assembly point is austin
01:30texas the base msrp on this car is 34 000 options include the long range all-wheel drive the blue
01:37paint the tow package that brings the options total to sixteen thousand nine hundred ninety dollars the
01:43destination fee of one thousand three hundred ninety brings us to a total cost of fifty two thousand
01:48three hundred eighty dollars that price doesn't take into account any potential tax credits or
01:52anything like that and i do think it's interesting to look back we paid about sixty two thousand
01:57dollars for our long-range all-wheel drive model y back in 2020. the overall proportions up here
02:04haven't changed but they did completely redo the styling gone are the more traditional-ish looking
02:09headlights that were up here on the fender now your headlights are down here lower in the bumper and
02:13they're actually adaptive now which means your high beams can be on longer and they'll turn on and off
02:18different pixels to not blind on coming drivers which is actually pretty cool and you have now this
02:23cyber truck-esque light bar in the front i think it looks pretty decent and it's pretty interesting
02:28tesla is relying on i guess brand recognition there's no logo up here and like all other teslas there is a
02:35frunk up here or a front trunk what i really like about what they do here is it's really nicely
02:40finished so you have these coverings that go everywhere you're not just staring into the
02:44structure of the car it's well sealed and of course it's actually a usable space so you could
02:50put a bag in here or you know something of actual volume and one of the detail changes they made is
02:56there's now a drain plug down in here so if you put something wet in there you can just open that up
03:00it'll drain out and easier to keep it clean so they restyled the rear as well and yeah the proportions
03:07and whatnot similar to the front are mostly the same and i'll be honest when i first saw it in
03:11pictures didn't really like the back with this new bar but honestly in person the way that this
03:17light bar reflects down onto the logo back here is actually pretty sick they did make some nice
03:23changes to the cargo area as well and i think that's a good thing because that's really the reason
03:28or one of the reasons you would buy this over the model 3s what they added here is power folding and
03:34raising actually rear seats so there's buttons here on the cargo area and i can with one touch i
03:40can raise and lower the 60 40 split and what a nice detail that i noticed is if you have the
03:46passenger front seat too far back it will automatically push itself forward so that when the
03:52right side seat folds down it doesn't collide with it pretty smart attention to detail here what's not so
03:57great is this cargo cover that they included it's kind of flimsy yet bulky at the same time and
04:03there's really nowhere to put it it doesn't fold up or anything like that so you just kind of have
04:07to put it on the floor one thing sadly that has not changed are these terrible door handles i know
04:13you all called me out when i reviewed the model 3 saying they're not that bad but the reality is
04:18after living with this car for a while when you're carrying a bunch of things it just gets really
04:23annoying it's designed for one hand really you got to push it in with your thumb and then grab this
04:27little stick that comes out look it makes a good first impression if you haven't spent time
04:31with one of these cars but after a while it just gets tiring and kind of a nuisance
04:39so they redid the interior a bit too on the model y and the general philosophy here is the same
04:44it's still super minimalistic and everything is for the most part where it was before but a lot of
04:50the details in terms of fit and finish have been improved you know honestly it's been pretty
04:55successful everything looks a lot nicer the build quality seems like it's been improved quite a bit
04:59it's just a nicer place to sit i particularly like the suede that's on the doors here on these
05:05inserts and you get a little bit of a contrasting kind of soft material up here the speaker grilles
05:10stand out you have stitching across the dashboard with kind of this matching panel up here and i
05:16really like the led strip that goes all the way across the dashboard and onto the doors we saw that
05:21in the model 3 as well and it just is kind of a cool effect especially at night they made some updates
05:26to the controls and the interface in this car and it wasn't good before and it's somehow even worse
05:32now it's not fundamentally different everything is still controlled through the center screen here for
05:37the most part and they've been iterating on this software for a while now and i'll say it's a pretty
05:42amazing piece of software but for an ipad maybe while you're sitting on your couch there are times when
05:47you're driving where it's just too distracting frankly to use this too many options small text
05:53small buttons things like that now there are some pretty big changes though gone is the gear selector
05:59stock that was on the right side of the steering wheel now you're shifting gears with the slider
06:03that's here on the center screen and that's something we've seen in the refreshed model 3 we've seen it in
06:09the s uh the x and the cybertruck as well so that's now common amongst all their vehicles but what
06:15they added or at least i'll say they didn't take away here in the model y is the turn signal stock
06:21that's over here on the left side they got rid of it in the 3 they got rid of it in the s the
06:25cybertruck the x it's at least nice to see it here it kind of feels like an insult we'll talk about that
06:30when we're out on the road but you're interacting with it all the time the turn signals automatically
06:35turn off so sometimes it just gets a little tedious to use but still i'd rather have that over the
06:40buttons on the steering wheel that we've seen in their other vehicles and then there's just a
06:44general approach here with the controls to simplify it even more than we've seen in the past so you
06:48have touch capacitive panels here on the steering wheel to do things like wipers and high beams and
06:54things like that i did have a cool software related moment happen while i was driving this car over
06:59the weekend i was in my garage and i opened the hatch in the back and i reached up to stop it before it
07:05hit the ceiling or the garage door at my house and then the next time i went to get into the car there
07:10was a nice little message up here on the screen that told me how to go in and set a custom opening
07:15height for that hatch so that i didn't have to do that each time so that was actually pretty cool
07:19and a nice little surprise delight type of feature that you can get through a software system like
07:24this the interior storage is a little different than before first of all now you have the dual
07:29wireless chargers right here accessible under the screen and then now you have these sliding lids here
07:35and the one back here covers the cup holders that's great nice and accessible but then you
07:39basically have this trash can right here and it's super deep so if i have a couple things in there
07:44like i do now i have to lean way forward and reach down in just to even see and access what's
07:49in there otherwise if you're just putting a bunch of things in there it starts to pile up
07:54and now to access it you're just digging through all of your stuff to find things so
07:58it gets a little annoying beyond that center console right here is pretty nice no latch which
08:02is interesting you just lift up right on it and that's simple what i do love about the storage
08:06though is the door pockets they're absolutely huge i was able to fit a big reusable water bottle in
08:13there and a thermos so just nice and flexible nothing really preventing you from putting anything
08:18tall in there so that's nice to see the rear seat hasn't really fundamentally changed but that's not
08:23a bad thing it's still pretty comfortable back here good posture with the elevation of the seat from
08:28the floor so my legs are decently supported but the biggest change is this screen and this mirrors what
08:33we saw in the updated model 3 honestly i could take it or leave it i mean you can control the
08:38climate back here and the volume and that's cool and also play games and watch movies and things but
08:43it's so low i guess watching something would be okay but if i'm going to lean forward and
08:47touch and swipe and whatnot to play a game it just doesn't really make that much sense to get out of
08:52this car you still have to use these electronic door latches and there's these buttons that are on the
08:58front and the rear doors one thing i noticed is they now have the emergency releases labeled so
09:05you'll see there's a little triangle thing here to kind of say hey in the event that this doesn't
09:11work here's how you manually open the door and while still far from great do not get me wrong
09:16this is at least better especially in the back here where the cable to open the door is down here
09:22in the storage pocket underneath this little panel so it used to be completely unlabeled you're never
09:27going to find it so at the very least now you look in there and you see something and then similarly
09:32up front there is a symbol on the manual latch that you can pull to open the door manually if
09:38the electronic latch doesn't work so we're out driving the model y now and let's just start with
09:46the things that they did change they really wanted to make this vehicle more refined and more competitive
09:51in that way and so a big part of that is making it quieter the old model y was pretty noisy honestly
09:56especially for an ev yeah is this the quietest ev on the market no but i would say they've been
10:01quite successful and you know when you get up on the highway the wind noise is really well controlled
10:06they've now got double lamination to the glass here on the doors and that really helps quiet
10:11passing cars and just the overall ambient seclusion in this car when you step on it you do
10:16still hear the powertrain and that electric motor and inverter particularly in the back you hear it
10:21really come alive when you're let's say above 50 percent of that throttle input but most of the
10:26time you're not really hearing it and it's pretty quiet the other thing they tried to really improve
10:30on and it was desperately needed honestly is the ride quality and they did make pretty big gains
10:36again kind of like the noise is it the most comfortable ev definitely not it's still pretty rough
10:41over bumps pretty firm i would have described the old one as straight up harsh brittle unrefined
10:47this one is definitely a lot better it's softer yeah you can still get some situations where it's
10:52challenged but definitely an improvement and they did that without sacrificing the handling the model
10:583 and the model y have been known for really sharp responsive handling we found that with the original
11:03one and yeah it's a little bit dulled here because of the softer setup but it still has a super quick
11:08steering rack it dives into corners pretty well and it is a high point for the vehicle i will say the
11:12steering feel itself is not that great it's almost like there's a lot of friction in the steering wheel
11:16and you have to return it back to center yourself it just doesn't feel all that natural to drive but
11:22if you're used to your existing model y and the way it drives i don't think you're going to be too
11:26surprised here the epa rates this long range all-wheel drive version at 327 miles of range which is
11:34pretty good also what i love to see is how efficient this vehicle seems to be it's rated for 3.6 miles
11:41per kilowatt hour which is definitely on the higher end of the spectrum especially for an suv body
11:46style like this and in my own experience i was seeing over four miles per kilowatt hour just in
11:52a regular mix of of driving in typical situations when it comes to charging it hasn't really changed
11:58much it does help that this vehicle is so efficient to add miles quickly whether you're charging at home
12:03or out at a supercharger but the supercharger integration is really one of the major draws of a
12:09tesla even as they open up their network to more cars it's still so well integrated into the software
12:15you just show up you plug it in it all starts charging and happening essentially automatically
12:20after that point in terms of charge speeds it is rated for 250 kilowatt on a tesla supercharger which
12:27is good i mean tesla says that it can add about 169 miles of range in 15 minutes honestly at this
12:33point it's more mid-pack than leading the pack like tesla used to be and it does have an 11
12:38kilowatt onboard charger so you'll add somewhere around 40 miles per hour if you're maxing out
12:43the charge speed at home as well so let's talk more about this turn signal stock if you can call it
12:50that here and it's great just that it's here i can reach it like a normal stock but it doesn't
12:56latch into place so it's just a momentary switch you push it up or you push it down and it turns the
13:00signal on and like in other teslas it's using software in the vision system of the car to detect
13:08when to turn it off in other words when you get into the next lane it auto cancels honestly when
13:14you're using the buttons that are on the steering wheel and other teslas it's actually a nice work
13:18around to have it cancel automatically but in here with the stock i'd rather just work like a normal
13:23one because there are situations for example if you're turning onto a street and you need to quickly
13:28get over a couple lanes to make it to a turn lane you're smacking this turn signal stock a couple
13:33different times because it's just canceling automatically as you make your way across the
13:37road yeah would i rather this over the buttons of course but it would just be nice to have a regular
13:42implementation of a turn signal stock and you can't turn off that auto cancel system either at
13:47least at the time of this recording in terms of driving position and seating and comfort it's it's not
13:54that different but one change they made is now the front seats are cooled and heated so they're
14:00adding that cooling function pretty nice to have especially in the summer like it is now and i really
14:04like the driving position in this car the model 3 gets a little cramped and because of the battery
14:09your feet are really high up here with the more traditional at this point anyway suv upright driving
14:16position it's more comfortable there is no gauge cluster in front of you which totally has its other cons
14:22don't get me wrong but in terms of driving position it's kind of nice because you can put the steering
14:27wheel basically wherever you want within the range of adjustment and you're not worried about
14:31blocking your visibility to any information or controls or anything like that visibility hasn't
14:36changed it's still not great the a pillars are like sails in the wind they're super wide at the base
14:44it is nice that i can at least see between the mirror and the a pillar at least on the driver's side
14:49here but they're really wide it does make the car feel a little old honestly in some ways side
14:54windows are good your visibility up directly out the front is good because of the way the hood drops
14:58off in your elevated seating position as you make your way along the side of the car it has this raked
15:04profile so the rear gets a little bit pinched and then the rear windshield or the the glass there on
15:11the hatch is really narrow so you don't really have the best view out the back tesla does have some
15:16pretty killer camera systems on the car so you can see forward you can see your sides in a good clear
15:21view like other teslas you have one pedal driving that's just on all the time so as you lift off the
15:29accelerator it starts to break it uses the motors to recapture some of that energy send it back into
15:35the battery it's part of what makes an electric vehicle really efficient at low speed city driving
15:39that type of thing so you can't turn it off which you really haven't been able to in a tesla for a long
15:44time there are two settings you can turn it down but honestly i found that you just get used to it
15:49like a lot of ev drivers tend to and having it on that higher setting while it can be jerky if you're
15:54not smooth with the pedal it does allow you to drive the vehicle more often without moving over to the
16:00brake pedal so kind of a love or hate thing but definitely something if you haven't driven a tesla or
16:04an electric vehicle with this type of system before that you'll need to get used to for the longest time
16:10tesla did not have what we would consider a proper blind spot warning indicator typically you see the
16:18symbol like an orange light or something like that out in the glass of the rear view mirror some put
16:22it in slightly different locations which is fine but it's something in the area you are typically
16:27looking at when you're checking your blind spots to let you know that there's another car there it's
16:31a feature people love it's helpful and they just never had it and they would give you some camera
16:36views and things like that but now and we saw it with the model 3 as well there's a kind of half
16:41baked led that's behind the speaker grill up here at the base of the a pillar and you can't see it at
16:46all when it's off so you don't really know where to look until it's on and then when it is on it's
16:51the tiniest little red led it's like something you would use when you're building your first circuit
16:57in engineering school or something like that and it just feels like an afterthought now they do like
17:02they always have the camera system that pops up in the center screen and then if there is somebody
17:07in your blind spot not only do you have the light but there's a little glow that kind of happens on
17:11the edge of the screen so a couple different things to let you know but yeah at least there's
17:15something there now beyond that it has all of the standard active safety features that we like to see
17:20things like forward collision warning automatic emergency braking and it's not a surprise they've always
17:24had that which is great the other thing we definitely have to talk about is full self-driving
17:30they are really pushing this system that is supposed to really allow you to let the car do
17:36most of the work for you it's a hands-free system it's using the cameras on the car to drive both on
17:42highway and city roads back roads again they are iterating on this system over time always trying to
17:48improve it and in my own experience it is both incredibly impressive and terrifying at the same time
17:55so you really have to babysit it pay attention it is not a eyes off system even though it is maybe
18:01designed to be a hands-off system it works great in certain situations but certainly not in others
18:11so that's our video review of the updated tesla model y and if you're coming out of an existing tesla you
18:18already own one you're just looking to upgrade you're going to be super happy i mean it just builds on
18:23the fundamentals that you're already used to i don't think there's anything to really stop you or
18:27to be hesitant about however there are a lot of other great ev options out there so if you're looking
18:33for your first one or coming from an ev from a different brand should it be on the shopping list
18:38absolutely that charging integration is still unmatched but i do think it's worth cross shopping with
18:45other evs it's not the default go-to answer anymore for our full test results and information on other evs
