00:00we're here overlooking beautiful Monaco about to speak to Tilo Cara a man that's not just
00:16leading things on the pitch but changing lives off it too now in 2022 he started a foundation
00:21in Burundi with the focus being unlocking potential for young people through sport and education so
00:27let's go speak to Tilo and hear the story behind his incredible work Tilo lovely to meet you now
00:37it's my first time in Monaco and oh my gosh how much do you love it well you can see it's very
00:42beautiful relaxed I want to say low-key but it's not not so low-key even by the fashion yeah well
00:49we're trying well they absolutely love you here and how's it going for you good very good very
00:55good I I really like the the club the ambition the people we have a lot of young guys a few more
01:02experienced players and I'm part of of this group I'm mainly trying to be myself
01:08well you're not leading just on the pitch but off it too talk me through your foundation what's it
01:21all about and how did it start I just thought to myself I want to do more things and I also want
01:28to do create my own my own foundation my own projects together with my family yeah just try
01:34to do positive things and help people I saw that the motto for the foundation is Terimberre is that
01:41how you pronounce it is that right Terimberre okay I knew I was gonna butcher it it really means to to grow
01:47to progress and I think that's probably quite fitting with you but why did you choose that word
01:51yeah it means to to move forward it means progressive means also hope in the kind of way it fits because
02:01I always think that the circumstances obviously of life matter but what matters even more is how to deal
02:08with them and how to maneuver through them now your mom is from Burundi it's her home country but you kind
02:15of grew up you were there for the first few years of your life there and then moved to Germany where
02:18you grew up do you still feel that strong connection with Burundi yeah I still feel the strong connection
02:24actually I feel maybe even more connected today than a few years ago because obviously the civil war that
02:33was in Rwanda and Burundi it affected Burundi for a lot of years so when I was three or four years old
02:40and we moved to Germany we didn't have the possibility to go back to Burundi a lot and now as the last
02:47years we have the foundation and even before starting the foundation I went back to Burundi and really
02:55my connection with the country just grew a lot more so talk me through the foundation and what projects
03:05you guys are working on at the moment so until now we've built the first big project was to build a
03:10center nearby school that just gives different possibilities we have a library with all kinds
03:17of books we have a digital library with computers that have access to internet which a lot of a lot of
03:25kids don't have their dancing courses cooking courses there is the famous like the most famous
03:32instrument in Burundi is tambourine is the tambourines the big drums so they are there's a team for
03:39that there's a dancing team there's a football team which became really an academy which is competing and
03:45different things my dream is not only to put something there or not only to give money or to
03:51raise money and and put it there and give it into people's hands the philosophy is really to help the
03:58people help themselves with their energy with their potential with their talents so they keep growing
04:04on that I saw a video of you dancing with some kids over there I mean the moves were pretty incredible
04:12but how great is it for you when you actually do get to go over there and see the impact that your
04:16work's having yeah the kids are really energetic and they dance they prepare the whole ceremony a whole
04:23choreography okay okay and and then of course I had to dance with them
04:43so you had your first big gala in May and saw lots of familiar faces there there was Mbappe, Sané I mean that's incredible what was that night of the year?
04:51yeah it was a amazing night it was the first gala that we that we organized with the foundation we were very happy I was very happy to see my teammates to see people from the club the coach teammates from from my past from my past teams from the national team to be there and to show interest and be involved and to support really
05:18we are here to make a change and give Perundian children a better future
05:25you mentioned your teammates your coach at the time they were there to support you do you feel that support from the club here?
05:29I feel it and I feel in general that Monaco and people in Monaco are very close and very emotional about about charity and about projects yeah I feel it
05:41something else you did on the night was hand out coffee that was produced by the foundation am I right in thinking that coffee is the main export from Burundi?
05:50you have coffee and tea okay I would say these two are the main export
05:55well I've got a little surprise for you because we've been in touch with a man named Clark Briel so he's actually a young artist from Burundi he lives in Bren at the moment and he was there on the night so you've met him before and he's a bit of a genius I would say because he can make art from pretty much anything
06:17now he took the coffee that you gave him the night of the gala and made it into something pretty special so should we take a look okay yeah
06:24let me grab my phone hold on that's a real surprise now first interview I get a surprise yeah
06:32okay so ready
06:36okay
06:49Well, it doesn't stop there because we've actually got
07:19something to give you. Look at that. Shall we put it next to you? See how accurate it is?
07:28Do the same pose. Do you know what? That is unbelievable. You would never think that it's
07:37made out of coffee. Do the pose again. You've nailed it. It's literally made out of coffee.
07:48Nobody would have, like if you show this to anybody, nobody would say, okay, yeah, it's
07:54made out of coffee. Nobody. It's crazy. Like, it's just incredible. And hopefully it will
07:59show the kids in Burundi that you can really take anything and make something of it. Because
08:05he's taken that from your evening and made it. And it's, I mean, that's absolutely incredible.
08:10Where are you going to put it? Well, it's going to have a place. It's going to have a place
08:14in my home for sure. Yeah? Yeah, for sure. Amazing. Clark. Guys, thank you. Amazing.
08:21You're so welcome. Well, do you want to keep hold of that for now? Yeah? He's not going
08:28to be with the interview anymore. He's just looking at the portrait of himself. No questions.
08:32Interview is finished. Done. Well, talk to me because one word I want to say. Terimberi.
08:41Is that right? Terimberi. We tried. Try it one more time. Teach it. Terimberi. Terimberi.
08:46Yeah. Oh, that was good. That was good. Terimberi. Yes. The future. What is the future for
08:52the foundation and for you? Hopefully a bright one. Hopefully lots of projects, lots of kids
09:01involved, lots of talents explored, like Terimberi, just moving forward.
09:07Tilo, you're a complete inspiration. Thank you so much for speaking to us.
09:11Thank you, guys. And yeah, thanks a lot for the surprise.
09:15Carnival.
09:28Sure.
09:30There's your master.
