00:00Arctic Blast, set to hit central and eastern U.S. just before Christmas.
00:06The central and eastern United States are bracing for an extraordinary cold snap just ahead of Christmas,
00:11according to a new forecast that has climatologists warning of potentially record-breaking temperatures.
00:18The New York Post reported that from the Midwest to the East Coast,
00:21temperatures are expected to plunge 15 to 20 degrees below December averages during the third week of the month,
00:27MIT climatologist Judah Cohen told USA Today.
00:31In New York City, where mid-December temperatures usually hover around 37 degrees Fahrenheit,
00:37residents could face sustained lows in the teens and low 20s.
00:41My thinking is that the cold the first week of December is the appetizer,
00:46and the main course will be in mid-December, Cohen said.
00:50The most expansive region of most likely extreme cold on Earth
00:54stretches from the Canadian Plains to the U.S. East Coast in the third week of December.
01:00Frigid air from the polar vortex is expected to bring Arctic conditions across much of the U.S.,
01:05with temperatures well below normal.
01:08In the Midwest, highs are in the teens to mid-20s and lows near zero,
01:12while Albany, New York could see readings 15 to 20 degrees below average.
01:16Similar extremes may hit the East Coast later this month,
01:19and any developing storms could produce significant winter weather.
01:22Earlier this week, November snow disrupted travel across the Midwest,
01:27and a nor'easter is set to hit the Northeast on Tuesday,
01:30bringing 8 inches of snow to much of New York and New England,
01:33with isolated areas receiving up to a foot.
01:36Coastal cities like New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia can expect mostly flurries and cold rain.
01:42Cohen emphasized that the coming mid-December cold could be some of the most extreme anywhere on Earth,
01:47underscoring the harsh winter conditions that Americans may face as the holiday season approaches.
