00:00What's up GQ? I'm Shawn Mendes and I'm going undercover on the internet.
00:04This is actually me.
00:08Twitter.
00:12Shawn Mendes said that all the songs he's ever written were about Camila.
00:15So where does Where Were You in the Morning fit into the story?
00:18All the songs that were about a person were about Camila.
00:22That song wasn't actually about a person.
00:24And that's the truth of being a songwriter sometimes.
00:26Sometimes you're writing about something that didn't happen, maybe that you wish that happened.
00:30And that was that song for me.
00:33What if Monster is Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes talking about their fame and the monsters that come with it?
00:38Monster is more about how society likes to put celebrities up on a pedestal.
00:43But I think society is constantly putting everybody up on a pedestal.
00:47I think because we all have social media, we're always either putting each other on a pedestal or tearing each other down.
00:53And I think there is an unfair and not possible expectation for perfection that people have to kind of live up to on social media all the time.
01:03And Monster is that.
01:06And it's really just saying, like, what if I trip? What if I fall? Does that make me a monster?
01:10And the answer is no.
01:11I really hope that that comes across in that way because it's a really important song, I think, for that reason.
01:16Okay, let's check out YouTube.
01:20I thought they weren't friends at one point. Was that true?
01:23Justin and I were never, like, enemies.
01:26We were maybe not friends.
01:28I mean, yeah, I guess I wasn't texting him being like, yo, how you doing today?
01:32But we were never enemies, absolutely.
01:34That's kind of something that people maybe might have turned it into at some point.
01:38When he made that video and he was like, who's Shawn Mendes?
01:41He said he really genuinely didn't know who I was and I believed him.
01:44So whatever. Maybe he did.
01:46He was trying to bug me either way.
01:48But I mean, honestly, I really love him.
01:50He's been so sweet and super gracious and giving with his advice and with his energy.
01:55So he's a good friend.
01:57TikTok.
01:59Me, the first time I made a TikTok.
02:02Look, that was the third time I made a TikTok.
02:05And I don't think I'm going to get much better.
02:07I was thinking about just doing exactly what I did on Vine on TikTok.
02:10Maybe that'll be good.
02:12Boom.
02:14My grandpa trying to figure out FaceTime.
02:17That's how I feel, genuinely.
02:19I mean, when I go on TikTok, I feel like a grandpa trying to figure out FaceTime.
02:23You have so many filters.
02:24Back in my day, you just had Vine.
02:26You had one option.
02:27It was you could record it and stop and then record and stop.
02:30You couldn't do reverse.
02:31There was no sound effects.
02:33It was the good old days.
02:35Posted.
02:36Instagram.
02:40Wait, did you two just get a puppy together or...
02:43That's exactly what we got.
02:44We got a puppy together and he's over here sleeping.
02:47Hey, come here.
02:48You want to come here?
02:49No.
02:50He's in his eye.
02:51I don't listen to anything you say.
02:52Puppy face.
02:53That's what I was saying?
02:54You sleepy?
02:55Come.
02:56No.
02:57Not gonna happen.
02:58Sorry, guys.
02:59Tarzan's like 10 weeks right now.
03:01But he's growing like super fast.
03:03He's looking at me right now.
03:04He's like really questioning whether he wants to hang out or not.
03:07But come here.
03:08Come, baby.
03:09You want to say hi?
03:11No.
03:12This is Tarzan.
03:13He's really dramatic.
03:14And he's yawning.
03:15What are you stressed about?
03:16You're tired.
03:17He's nervous and tired.
03:18He gets camera shy, I guess.
03:19Okay, I'll put you down.
03:20Perfect Sean says, what's your favorite track?
03:22I can't decide overall, like forever, what my favorite song is.
03:24But currently my favorite song on that album is Song For No One.
03:26Song For No One ended up being the pillar for what I wanted the album to sound like.
03:43And I wrote it three years ago and didn't even know it.
03:45So yeah.
03:46And it's just a beautiful song.
03:47I mean, it's really heartbreaking and lonely.
03:50And I was lonely and kind of heartbroken at the time.
03:52And it sounds it.
03:53Because the whole thing is one take through.
03:55And yeah.
03:56I love that song.
03:58Seriously, no.
03:59It's actually me.
04:00Okay, maybe we should go over to Wikipedia and see what they're talking about.
04:05Mendez has been open about his struggles with anxiety, which he disclosed publicly through
04:09In My Blood, a track from his third studio album.
04:12That's super true.
04:13I've always been open about anxiety, but it was the first time that I really wanted to
04:16write about the severity of it.
04:18And it was terrifying.
04:19And I thought that a lot of people were going to be like, he's over the top and dramatic
04:22and ungrateful.
04:23And I actually ended up getting an overwhelming amount of love.
04:27But not only love, but like people being like, I needed this song.
04:31This was the year I needed this song.
04:33And even this year, people reached out to me about In My Blood.
04:36I think it's going to be one of those songs that is always necessary because anxiety is
04:40always relevant.
04:42Mendez started attracting viewers after he posted a cover from Justin Bieber's As Long
04:47As You Love Me on the social video app Vine in 2013 and got 10,000 likes and as many
04:53followers the next day.
04:54That's some like phrase that I said when I was like 15 that I just stuck to.
04:58I was just like, it got like 10,000 likes and I had like 10,000 followers the next day.
05:02I don't even know if that's accurate at all.
05:05But this is very true.
05:06I did a cover of As Long As You Love Me.
05:08And that's the video that made my Vine account blow up.
05:12So thanks, Justin.
05:13All these years later.
05:14Cora.
05:15The Shawn Mendes write his own songs.
05:20I do write my own songs.
05:22I wonder if the majority of people think I don't or do.
05:25Regardless, I do.
05:26That's why I love them so much.
05:28I think I was like probably 15 or 16 when I started writing songs for the first time.
05:34They were really not great.
05:35And then I wrote a lot of songs and Ed Sheeran has this metaphor about songwriting.
05:40It's like an old tap that hasn't been working for a long time.
05:43You turn the tap on and let the dirty water pour out until clean water starts pouring out.
05:47It's like the same metaphor for writing songs.
05:48And I always find that after not writing songs for a few months, if I want to write again,
05:52I have to let myself let that dirty water kind of wash through before I got the good ones.
05:57Next.
05:58When did Shawn Mendes start to sing?
06:00I started to sing when I was probably 10 or 11, maybe even 12.
06:08I genuinely mean this.
06:10I wasn't a great singer.
06:12My sister would tell you that's true, but I just loved singing and I would watch videos
06:17of like Bruno Mars or Justin Bieber or Ed Sheeran singing and I would sit there in my bedroom
06:22and just try to mimic their vocal things and found my own voice through that process.
06:27Treat you better.
06:29Is this also for Camila Cabello?
06:30This is definitely for Camila Cabello.
06:32And I think, I mean, I was 17 when I was writing that song and she wasn't even in a relationship.
06:36I just maybe through the grapevine heard that she had feelings for some guy and I was like,
06:40I'm going to write an entire song and do a video about this.
06:43What are you ordering from Tim Hortons?
06:46If I do happen to go to Tim Hortons, I will get most likely a chocolate chip muffin or one single Timbit.
06:53In America, you call them donut holes, I think, or the hole of the donut.
06:57I don't know if you sell those in America.
06:59Munchkins are donut holes, Timbits, all the same guy.
07:02What do you miss most in Canada?
07:05I was telling Camila this yesterday, actually.
07:07I was talking about how in Toronto there's this camaraderie in the wintertime that you get
07:11because the weather is really kind of mean and unforgiving, so people really come together.
07:16And it's like the first thing anyone ever says to each other when you walk into a room is like,
07:20it's cold outside, isn't it?
07:21And it's like this really nice camaraderie that we have.
07:23But you would only understand if you were from Toronto, so.
07:26I miss that a lot about Canada.
07:27And my friends and family, of course.
07:30You might not believe it, but it's actually me.
07:32This account is called Sean is Soft.
07:34I thought that you don't dance.
07:36I guess I was wrong.
07:37I do dance.
07:38I don't know if I dance great, though.
07:40But you know what?
07:41Maybe I do dance great.
07:43Maybe I'm a great dancer.
07:44Who knows?
07:45I'm not gonna put any boxes on that.
07:46I'm pretty sure I was just, like, trying to be a TikToker.
07:49I've never felt like an older man in my life.
07:52Oh, look who's back.
07:54Look who came back.
07:57I'm sorry, but Sean, you seriously need to release a hair routine.
08:00How is it structured so fluffy, curly, shiny, and more?
08:03How am I doing today?
08:05The truth is, it's all about the lighting and a good haircut.
08:08And I have the best hairstylist in the world, Anna Bertabe.
08:10She cuts my hair amazing, and she gives me all the products that, like, look good in it.
08:15There's a product that I use that's called Innersense.
08:17A leave-in conditioner, then a curl cream definer.
08:21There's just a whole lot of love.
08:23I think the truth about hair is that you gotta, like, rock the hair that your hair wants to be.
08:28You can't just force your hair to be something it's not, and that's it, you know?
08:32Gotta love the hair.
08:34Sean should make one of those podcasts where he just is talking about calming things while we drift into sleep.
08:39I would love to do that for everyone, and for myself.
08:42I've thought about doing a podcast a few times.
08:44The time will come when it's right.
08:46And just talk about waves crashing along the water.
08:49One day, I went on a walk down this beach, and it was gorgeous, and there was a sunset, and I was reminiscing of a friend of mine from when I was 11 years old.
08:58And stuff like that.
08:59Did you know this song inspired the sound of the album because his sister was listening to it and she showed him with sad faces?
09:05I did know that, and I guess obviously I knew that.
09:08But yeah, my sister inspired the album by playing me Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You by Frankie Valli.
09:13I owe her one, I guess.
09:14I got a whole album after that.
09:16Alright, GQ.
09:17That's it.
09:18I'm signing off the internet.
09:19Goodbye.
09:20Love you.
09:21Bye.
09:22Bye.
09:23Bye.
