00:00The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, this is not. The city of Portland, Oregon is getting
00:06dragged online after it refused to use the word Christmas while lighting the city's,
00:12well, lighting the city's Christmas tree. Thousands gathered in Pioneer Courthouse Square
00:17for the 41st annual lighting, but city leaders and other speakers at the ceremony went out of
00:23their way to avoid using the word Christmas, instead referring to it simply as the tree.
00:28Not even a generic holiday tree, nope, just the tree, like when the Dixie Chicks became
00:34the chicks. The event began with a woman from the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs thanking
00:40everyone for attending on Native American Heritage Day. The next speaker, draped in a Palestinian flag,
00:46led free Palestine chants and said, quote, this is the perfect time to bring this up.
00:51There are a lot of genocides going on. Is this the perfect time? Now, while the word Christmas was
01:00avoided at all costs, the city managed to wedge in some holiday spirit. Santa Claus attended the
01:06festivities, but he probably just went by Nick that day. And the crowd was led in a sing-along of songs
01:13like Angels We Have Heard on High and Deck the Halls. I guess they just gave up on the non-denominational
01:18cheer by that point.
