00:00In other news, the Philippine Navy has welcomed its newest guided missile frigate, BRP Diego Silang, into active service.
00:07Armed to the teeth, the ship is set to hit the high seas and keep a watchful eye on the nation's waters.
00:13Our Patrick D'Azuz reports.
00:17The newest ship of the Philippine Navy, FFG-07 or BRP Diego Silang, is now officially part of the active fleet.
00:26The christening and commissioning ceremony was held this Tuesday in Subic, Zambales, for the guided missile frigate acquired from South Korea, which is the sister ship of BRP Miguel Malbar.
00:39Captain John Percy Alcos will serve as the first commanding officer of BRP Diego Silang.
00:46The BRP Diego Silang arrived in the Philippines last September after being commissioned into service today.
00:52It is expected to take part in various training activities and patrols, including the West Philippine Sea.
01:00As a guided missile frigate, the ship bolsters our surface combatant force, enhances maritime domain awareness, and improves interoperability with partner navies.
01:13Most importantly, it enables a more persistent presence in our waters, especially in the West Philippine Sea.
01:21Right now, it will be undergoing several battle readiness evaluation in order to test and to, for, it's for capability development, it's for enhance, the enhancement of the competencies, not only of the people, but also the proficiency of the whole, of the whole ship.
01:42BRP Diego Silang is armed with modern equipment for anti-surface, anti-air, anti-submarine, and electronic warfare.
01:51These include a torpedo launching system, sea star missiles, a vertical launching system, and various sensors.
01:59Diego Silang sends a clear message that the Philippines will continue to invest in programs that strengthen maritime domain awareness, enhance deterrence, and improve our ability to uphold the rule of law.
02:17Next year, six more new ships for the Philippine Navy are expected to arrive, including offshore patrol vessels also purchased from South Korea.
