00:00To the sound of music and chants, Nicolas Maduro stepped onto a stage amid a crowd in Caracas
00:08and began waving and dancing, a gesture of defiance seemingly meant to project steadfastness
00:16in the face of mounting pressure from President Trump. He declared his rejection of what he called
00:22the Peace of Slaves, affirming that the U.S. military presence in the Caribbean
00:28poses a direct threat to Venezuela's sovereignty, and insisting that he seeks a peace based on freedom,
00:35not in positions.
00:45But behind this festive scene, one of the most sensitive negotiations between Maduro and the
00:52Trump administration was unfolding. According to Reuters, Maduro had made a clear offer,
00:58he would leave Venezuela on the condition that he and his family receive full pardon,
01:04including the lifting of all U.S. sanctions and the closure of all cases against him at the
01:09International Criminal Court. He also requested the lifting of sanctions on more than 100 officials
01:15in his government whom Washington accuses of corruption, human rights abuses, or drug trafficking.
01:21However, Trump rejected most of these demands, granting Maduro only a one-week deadline to leave
01:28Venezuela for any destination of his choice with his family. When the safe passage deadline expired,
01:36Trump took a decisive step by closing Venezuelan airspace, a clear signal that the door to Maduro's
01:42exit had been firmly shut.
